To remove your information from an Xbox, use the action that matches your goal: Profile & system > Settings > Account > Remove accounts removes a profile from that console; Microsoft’s online Payment options page removes a saved card; Services & subscriptions controls recurring billing; and Reset and remove everything prepares a console for sale or gifting. These actions are separate. Removing a profile does not close the Microsoft account, and deleting a card does not by itself cancel Game Pass or another subscription.
This guide covers the exact paths, what each action changes, and what Microsoft cannot do remotely when the Xbox is no longer accessible.
Which Xbox action matches what you want to remove?
Choose the smallest action that solves the problem. A console setting changes local data, while the Microsoft-account dashboard changes online billing or device registration. You may need more than one action, especially when selling or gifting the hardware.
| Goal | What changes | Where to do it | Is the Xbox required? |
|---|---|---|---|
| End the current session | Signs out now; the profile remains available for another sign-in | Xbox profile menu | Yes |
| Remove one person’s profile from this console | Deletes that locally stored profile from the Xbox; it does not close the Microsoft account | Xbox Settings > Account > Remove accounts | Yes |
| Delete a saved card or other payment method | Removes the method from the Microsoft account’s payment list | Microsoft-account Payment options | No |
| Prevent another automatic subscription charge | Changes recurring-billing status or the payment method attached to the subscription | Services & subscriptions | No |
| Erase local data before transfer | Removes local accounts, saves, settings, home-Xbox associations, installed games and apps | Xbox reset menu | Yes |
| Clean up the account’s device list | Removes the Xbox registration shown in the Microsoft-account devices list | Microsoft-account devices page | No |
| Permanently close the Microsoft account | Starts Microsoft’s separate account-closure process | Microsoft account-closure page | No |
Do not substitute one row for another. Signing out is not the same as removing a profile, removing a payment method is not cancellation, and removing a device registration is not a remote factory reset.

How do I remove a Microsoft account profile from an Xbox?
Use the console’s Remove accounts command. This removes the selected profile from that Xbox, not the online Microsoft account, so the account can be added to a console again later. It is the right choice when you are keeping the console but want one person’s locally stored sign-in removed.
- Turn on the Xbox and press the Xbox button.
- Open Profile & system > Settings > Account > Remove accounts.
- Select the intended profile. On a shared Xbox, check the name and gamer picture carefully before continuing.
- Select Remove and confirm.
The menu path is documented in Microsoft product support guidance for Xbox troubleshooting. If you only choose Sign out from the profile menu, the current session ends but the profile remains stored for the next sign-in. Sign out is useful when you are temporarily leaving the console; Remove accounts is the appropriate local cleanup when the profile should no longer appear there.
What profile removal does and does not do
The command targets the profile selected on that Xbox. It does not close the Microsoft account, delete the account’s online payment list, cancel Game Pass, or remove the Xbox from the account’s device page. Those are separate online tasks. If the same account is used on another Xbox or Microsoft service, those other sign-ins are not removed by this console command.

Removing the wrong profile can inconvenience another user even though it does not permanently close that person’s Microsoft account. If the owner later needs the profile on the console, the account can be added again with its normal sign-in.
How do I remove a saved payment method?
Payment information is managed online, not through the console’s profile-removal menu. Sign in to the Microsoft account that actually owns the card or other method, then remove it from Payment options.
- Open Microsoft’s Remove a Microsoft account payment method page and sign in to the correct account.
- In Payment options, locate the saved method.
- Choose Remove, then confirm the removal.
Removing the profile from an Xbox does not remove this online payment method. Conversely, deleting a card in the browser does not clear a profile that is still stored on the console. If several Microsoft accounts are used in the household, verify the account name before changing anything; a card may be attached to a different account from the one currently active on the Xbox.
Why might Microsoft refuse to remove the card?
If Microsoft will not let you remove the method, check the account’s subscriptions and billing status first. A recurring subscription may require you to change how it is paid, and Microsoft notes that a past-due balance may need to be paid before billing details can be changed. Removing a card is therefore not always a single-click privacy action when it is still needed for an outstanding charge or an active billing arrangement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsOpen the subscription page described below, resolve any billing issue, and then return to Payment options. Do not assume that making the card disappear from one console means the online payment record has been deleted; the browser confirmation is the relevant step.

How do I stop another subscription charge?
Review recurring billing separately from the card list. A card can disappear from the console while a subscription remains active on the Microsoft account.
- Sign in to the Microsoft account that owns the subscription.
- Open Services & subscriptions.
- Find the subscription and select Manage.
- Use Change how you pay to select another method, or follow Microsoft’s cancellation controls if you want the subscription to end.
Microsoft’s subscription payment and options guidance explains the billing states. If the page shows Turn on recurring billing, recurring billing is already off and the subscription is scheduled to expire on the date displayed. That label is a useful confirmation that another automatic renewal is not scheduled under the shown state.
If you see a control to turn recurring billing on instead, do not assume the subscription has ended merely because you removed a card or profile from the Xbox. Check the displayed end or renewal date and the account shown at the top of the page. If you want to keep the subscription but use a different funding source, use Change how you pay rather than deleting a method that the subscription still requires.
How do I wipe an Xbox before selling or gifting it?
For a transfer, back up anything you need and choose Reset and remove everything, not the option that keeps installed games and apps. Then remove the old console from the Microsoft-account device list. This two-part process handles both local content and the online registration.
Reset the console locally
- Press the Xbox button.
- Open Profile & system > Settings > System > Console info > Reset console.
- Choose Reset and remove everything.
- Confirm the reset and let the Xbox complete the process before disconnecting or handing it over.
Microsoft product support identifies this option for selling or gifting. It removes local accounts, saved data, settings, home-Xbox associations, and installed games and apps. The reset is a local erase; it is not a substitute for deleting an online payment method or closing the Microsoft account.
The alternative, Reset and keep my games & apps, is intended for troubleshooting when you retain the console. It is not the appropriate resale wipe because it keeps content that a new owner should not inherit. Before resetting, back up settings or any other information you need and make sure you know the Microsoft-account credentials required to set up another console. Once the reset begins, do not interrupt it by unplugging the Xbox.
Remove the old Xbox from the account’s device list
- Open Microsoft’s guidance for recycling, selling, or gifting an Xbox or Windows PC and sign in.
- Open the account’s devices page and find the Xbox.
- Select Show details > More actions > Remove, then confirm.
Remove in the device list is account-registration cleanup. Microsoft describes Unlink separately for the Store download-device limit, so do not use Unlink as a replacement for the console reset. Removing the listing does not erase local data from a machine that is still in someone’s possession; the local reset must be completed on the hardware.

For a sale, gift, or recycling handoff, finish the local reset first if you still have the Xbox, then remove the device registration online. Separately inspect Payment options and Services & subscriptions. This order gives you a chance to confirm that the console has completed its erase before it leaves your control, while the account pages confirm that billing and registration have been handled.

What if the Xbox is already out of reach?
You can still remove an online payment method, review subscriptions, and clean up the account’s device registration from a browser. The documented device-list action does not establish that it remotely erases the profile or local payment information stored on the Xbox.
Microsoft’s Sign out everywhere feature also has an important limitation: Xbox consoles are specifically excluded. Microsoft says supported sign-out actions may take up to 24 hours, but that statement does not promise a sign-out from an Xbox. Microsoft’s wording is, “Signing out may take up to 24 hours,” and the Xbox exclusion applies immediately before that timing guidance. Do not tell a buyer, family member, or former roommate that Sign out everywhere remotely wiped the console.
If you cannot recover the hardware, complete the online billing and subscription checks immediately and treat the console itself as inaccessible until it can be reset locally. Change the payment method or resolve any past-due amount through the account pages, and remove the device registration where available. Those steps reduce online exposure, but they are not a substitute for the physical Reset and remove everything command.

Does removing an Xbox profile close the Microsoft account?
No. Remove accounts only removes the selected profile from that console. Closing the Microsoft account is a separate, higher-impact workflow that requires account verification and is unnecessary when you simply want to clear one Xbox.
If you truly intend to close the account, use Microsoft’s account-closure instructions. Microsoft presents a 30-day or 60-day reopening window during that process; choose the window carefully because closure affects the account beyond the Xbox. Account closure should not be used as a shortcut for removing one local profile or one saved card.
Before beginning closure, make sure you actually intend to end the broader Microsoft account relationship. The Xbox-specific actions are reversible in ordinary use: a removed local profile can be added again, a payment method can be entered again if needed, and a subscription can be managed independently. Account closure is the consequential option, not the normal privacy cleanup.
Can I keep buying without leaving a card on the account?
A physical Xbox gift card may be an option after you remove a saved payment method, but it is optional and does not remove information already stored. Microsoft’s gift-card terms define gift cards as physical or digital stored-value cards.
- Gift-card value may not cover every purchase or subscription.
- An insufficient balance can require another registered payment method.
- Currency and regional restrictions apply.
- Microsoft states: “Your Microsoft account balance is non-transferable to another person or Microsoft account.”
A physical card can be useful for eligible purchases when you do not want a saved card on the account, but it is not a way to transfer an existing balance to someone else. It also does not guarantee that every subscription or purchase can be completed without another payment method. Physical inventory and any retailer’s stock or eligibility are separate questions; the account cleanup steps above do not require buying a card.

What should I check when a removal does not work?
The wrong profile disappeared
On a shared console, repeat Account > Remove accounts and verify the selected name before confirming. Removing one profile does not remove the other profiles on the Xbox. If the intended person’s profile is still present, select that exact profile rather than using a general sign-out command.
The card cannot be removed
Sign in to the account shown on the payment page, then inspect Services & subscriptions for active recurring billing or a past-due balance. Microsoft may require a billing change or payment of the overdue amount before allowing the method to be removed. If the household uses multiple accounts, sign out and recheck that you are editing the account that owns the method.
A subscription still appears after card deletion
Card deletion and subscription cancellation are independent. Return to Services & subscriptions, select Manage, and read the recurring-billing label and displayed date. Turn on recurring billing indicates that recurring billing is already off and the subscription is set to expire on the shown date.
The console still appears online after a reset
Resetting the Xbox and removing its device registration are separate actions. Complete the device-page sequence—Show details > More actions > Remove—after the local reset. A device-list entry is not proof that local data remains, and removing the entry is not proof that a console was physically wiped.
The menu wording looks different
Xbox interface labels can change between system updates and regions. Look for the same destinations—Remove accounts, Reset console, and Reset and remove everything—rather than selecting a similarly named sign-out or keep-content option. If you are preparing a transfer, confirm that the selected reset option explicitly says it removes everything.
Sign out everywhere appears successful but the Xbox is still signed in
That result is consistent with Microsoft’s documented limitation. Xbox consoles are excluded from Sign out everywhere, even though supported sign-out actions elsewhere may take up to 24 hours. Use the console’s local removal command whenever you can access the hardware.
The old Xbox cannot be found on the device page
Check that you are signed in to the Microsoft account associated with that Xbox and review the device list carefully. Device-list cleanup and local reset are separate; absence from the list does not establish that the console was reset, and presence on the list does not by itself show that local profiles are still there.

What do I need before starting?
- Access to the Xbox for profile removal or a factory reset.
- The sign-in credentials for the Microsoft account that owns the payment method or subscription.
- A browser for Payment options, Services & subscriptions, account closure, or device-list cleanup.
- A backup of settings or other information you need before selecting Reset and remove everything.
- Enough time to let a reset finish before disconnecting or handing over the console.
- The exact profile name and gamer picture when working on a shared Xbox.
No replacement console, controller, storage device, repair utility, or paid software is required for these account-menu and Microsoft-dashboard procedures. The important requirement is using the correct account and the correct destination for the change you intend to make.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long can I change my mind after starting Microsoft account closure?
Microsoft’s closure workflow offers a 30-day or 60-day reopening window. That choice is part of account closure, not a delay attached to removing an Xbox profile or payment method.
Can Microsoft account balance be transferred to another person?
No. Microsoft’s gift-card terms state that account balance is non-transferable to another person or Microsoft account. A gift card therefore cannot be used to move existing balance between accounts.
What does Xbox device “Unlink” do?
Unlink is a separate Store-management action associated with the download-device limit. It is not the command that erases the console, removes local profiles, or clears installed content.
Will Sign out everywhere remove my Xbox profile?
No. Microsoft specifically excludes Xbox consoles from that feature. Use the console’s Remove accounts command while you can access the hardware.
Does deleting my card cancel Game Pass?
No. Payment-method removal and subscription management are separate. Open Services & subscriptions, select Manage, and check the recurring-billing state or cancellation controls.
Which reset option should I use before selling an Xbox?
Choose Reset and remove everything. It is the transfer option that removes local accounts, saved data, settings, home-Xbox associations, installed games, and apps. Do not use Reset and keep my games & apps for a resale wipe.
Can I remove a payment method without the Xbox?
Yes. Sign in to the correct Microsoft account in a browser, open Payment options, select the method, choose Remove, and confirm. An active subscription or past-due balance may need attention first.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Does removing an Xbox from the Microsoft device list erase it?
No. Device-list removal cleans up the account registration. It does not remotely erase local profiles or data; the console must be reset locally with Reset and remove everything.
What does Turn on recurring billing mean?
If Services & subscriptions shows Turn on recurring billing, recurring billing is already off and the subscription is scheduled to expire on the date displayed.
Do I need special hardware or paid software for these steps?
No. Profile removal and resetting use the Xbox menus, while payment, subscription, closure, and device-list changes use Microsoft account pages. No replacement console, controller, storage device, repair utility, or paid software is required.
The Bottom Line
Match the action to the data you want gone: use Remove accounts for a local Xbox profile, Payment options for a saved card, Services & subscriptions for recurring billing, and Reset and remove everything plus device-list removal before a transfer. Microsoft’s Sign out everywhere feature excludes Xbox consoles, so it is not a remote wipe.
