To uninstall a Steam demo safely, find the demo—not the related full game—in your Library, check which Steam library drive holds it, and use the demo’s uninstall command. Confirm the selected title before proceeding. Valve says an uninstalled demo automatically disappears from the Library; that does not mean the full game was removed. Check Steam’s Settings > Storage afterward to verify the affected drive, rather than deleting folders by guesswork.
What should I check before uninstalling a Steam demo?
Start in Steam’s Library and identify the exact item you want to remove. A demo has its own Steam App ID associated with the full game, so Steam can show a demo and the paid game as related but separate applications. Their names, artwork, and installation folders may look similar. Select the entry that is explicitly the demo, not the base game, deluxe edition, playtest, or launcher.
Before clicking anything, decide whether the demo’s progress matters. Developers can configure a demo to share Steam Cloud saves with the full game, and some demo and full-game content can be delivered through shared depots. That means a manual deletion aimed at the demo can affect data that another title uses. The safest default is to use Steam’s application-level uninstall command and leave unrelated folders alone.

- Consider saves: check whether the game supports Steam Cloud and whether you need a local save before removing anything.
- Close the game: exit the demo and any related game or launcher so files are not in use during removal.
- Confirm your objective: uninstalling removes local application content; moving keeps the content but changes its drive; removing an item from your account is a separate action.
Valve lists C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappscommon as the default Windows games directory, but that is not a universal path. You may have added libraries on another internal drive, a different partition, or another supported location. Use the location shown in Steam rather than assuming the default applies to your installation.

Where might a save be stored?
Save location and backup behavior vary by game. Valve notes that some non-Cloud saves for third-party games may be in Windows’ DocumentsMy Games folder, but the developer determines each game’s actual location. Other saves may be under a game-specific folder in the user profile or inside the game’s installation data. If a save matters, check the developer’s support information and preserve local-only data before manually changing folders.
Steam Cloud is useful but not universal. Developers choose which files are synchronized, and a game can have local settings, screenshots, configuration files, or saves that are not covered. Shared Cloud configuration can also mean that demo progress is relevant if you later play the full version. Do not promise that uninstalling a demo deletes every save, and do not assume Cloud will always restore a missing file.
How do I uninstall the demo in Steam?
Use the uninstall command for the demo itself. Menu wording and placement can change between Steam client versions, but the important safeguard is to verify the title at every step.

- Check the installation drive. Open Steam > Settings > Storage and locate the library containing the demo. Note the drive and library path so you can verify the result afterward.
- Open the demo’s management options. In the Library, use the available uninstall command for that demo—typically found under its right-click Manage menu. Steam may present the command in a slightly different place in another client version.
- Read the confirmation prompt. Confirm that the displayed application name is the demo. If the prompt names the full game, cancel and return to the Library.
- Do not substitute account removal. Manage > Remove from account is a separate account-removal action. It is not the ordinary local uninstall command.
- Wait for Steam to finish. Let Steam complete its own removal process instead of interrupting it or deleting files at the same time.
- Recheck Storage. Return to Steam > Settings > Storage and inspect the same library drive. Compare the displayed usage rather than relying only on the Library list.
Valve’s 2024 Steam demo update says: “When a demo is uninstalled, it will automatically get removed from your library.” Valve describes Manage > Remove from account separately as an account-removal action. A vanished Library entry is therefore normal behavior, not evidence that the full game was uninstalled.
Why did the demo disappear from my Library?
That disappearance is expected after an uninstall. It does not indicate that Steam removed the associated full game. The demo and full game have separate App IDs, even though they can share depots or Cloud-save configuration. If the full game is still installed, its own Library entry and installation should remain.
How can I tell whether Steam reclaimed the space?
Check the affected library in Steam > Settings > Storage after the uninstall. Steam can have several libraries, so checking the wrong drive may make it appear that nothing changed. Also allow the operating system a moment to refresh its free-space calculation.
Do not expect a particular number of gigabytes. Demo sizes differ widely, and there is no representative demo size or universal amount of space that can be promised. The amount reclaimed depends on the demo’s installed depots, any shared content, and other files already occupying the drive.

If the drive still appears full, work from the Storage view and the library path it reports:
- Confirm that the demo was installed in the library you checked.
- Check other Steam libraries and drives for the same title.
- Look for downloads or updates still in progress.
- Allow Steam and the operating system to finish refreshing their size information.
- Only then investigate whether Steam has lost track of files.
A folder’s continued existence is not by itself proof that it is safe to delete. It could contain shared game content, a full-game depot, a manifest, or save data that another installation needs.
What if Steam says a game is uninstalled but files remain?
Do not immediately remove a folder or Steam manifest. Valve documents cases where an installed game appears uninstalled while files remain, and provides steps to have Steam recognize existing files. Those steps include adding a missing alternate library and starting an installation so Steam can detect content that is already present.
First match the path to the library shown in Storage. Then determine whether the files belong to the demo alone or are shared with the full game. If Steam has lost track of a library, correcting the library location can be safer than deleting anything. Follow Valve’s guidance for games that appear uninstalled before making manual changes.
Avoid deleting broad locations such as steamappscommon, steamapps manifests, userdata, or the full-game folder just to remove one demo. Shared depots and game-dependent saves mean a broad deletion can affect more than the demo.
Should I uninstall the demo, move it, or troubleshoot Steam?
Choose the action that matches your goal. Uninstalling is for content you no longer need. Moving is for retaining content while changing which drive stores it. Troubleshooting commands are for download, launch, or library-health problems and do not replace an uninstall.

Valve documents adding another Steam library and moving installed games in its installation-location guidance. Moving content is the option to consider when the goal is to free a particular drive without giving up the installation. It is not a way to reduce how much storage the content occupies overall, and it requires enough free space at the destination during the move.

Could adding storage be better than uninstalling?
If you want to keep several demos and games, adding an internal storage device or another suitable Steam library can be an alternative to deleting content. Valve’s documented process lets you add a library location and move installed games. Check your computer’s drive interface, available bays, operating-system support, and Steam compatibility before buying hardware. No particular SSD capacity, model, price, or performance level is universal for this task, so treat hardware selection as a separate compatibility decision.
An external hard drive is not automatically equivalent. Valve cautions against installing Steam on an external hard drive. If you use another drive, prefer a stable, supported library location and make sure it remains available whenever Steam needs to launch the installation.
What should I avoid deleting manually?
Prefer Steam’s own uninstall command over deleting files by hand. In particular, do not remove the entire Steam installation, a whole library, or broad folders such as steamapps or userdata to reclaim space from a single demo.
Steam Cloud-related local data is not the same as a demo’s installation directory. Valve gives these default local userdata locations for Cloud-related data:

These paths describe Cloud-related local data, not universal demo installation folders. Deleting them blindly may affect data beyond the demo. Likewise, uninstalling Steam itself is much broader than uninstalling one app: Valve warns that removing the Steam client removes installed game content.
When is manual inspection reasonable?
Manual inspection is a last resort after the correct library, drive, and save requirements are established. It can be reasonable when Storage shows no installation but a verified, title-specific folder remains and Steam’s recognition steps do not resolve the discrepancy. Even then, identify the files’ ownership and check whether the full game uses the same depot or save location.
Do not treat a matching folder name as proof. Demo folders can use an App ID, a publisher name, or a shared game directory. Steam manifests can also describe content that is still needed. If you cannot establish that a folder belongs exclusively to the uninstalled demo, leave it in place and use Steam’s support procedures.

Which Steam actions do not uninstall a demo?
Clearing the download cache, verifying game files, and repairing a library address different problems. Valve says clearing the cache does not affect installed games and requires a subsequent login, so it is not a way to remove demo files. File verification checks an installation’s integrity; it does not mean “delete this application.” Library repair helps Steam locate or use a library and is not a substitute for the demo’s uninstall command.
Also distinguish uninstalling from removing an item from your account. Valve documents Manage > Remove from account as a separate action. Do not choose it when you only intend to remove local files, and do not assume it can restore a demo that a developer later deactivates.

Not always. A developer can deactivate a demo. Existing Library holders may still see and uninstall it, while deactivation prevents downloading or launching it. If the demo is limited-time or you may want to revisit it, preserve any important local saves and understand that uninstalling can remove your local copy without guaranteeing a future download.
Steam Cloud does not change that availability rule. Cloud synchronization concerns configured save data; it does not force a developer to keep a demo downloadable. Keep a separate backup of local-only progress if it matters.

Where is Steam Cloud data stored on my computer?
Valve lists default local Cloud-related userdata locations as C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata on Windows, ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata on macOS, and ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata on Linux. These are not universal demo installation folders, and the game developer controls which saves use Cloud.
Steam says the demo is uninstalled, but the files are still there. What should I do?
Confirm the library and drive in Settings > Storage. Then follow Valve’s guidance for games appearing uninstalled, including adding a missing library or starting an installation so Steam can recognize existing files. Do not delete a folder merely because its name resembles the demo.
Will moving a demo to an external drive work?
