The steps work on Windows and Mac; the account and license you use determine whether the apps are available.
Step 1: Sign in with the account that owns or manages the license
Go to m365.cloud.microsoft/apps and sign in with the account associated with Microsoft 365 or Office.

- Personal subscription or purchase: use the Microsoft account used to set up the subscription or redeem the product key.
- Work or school installation: use your organization account. Your administrator must assign a license that includes the desktop apps.
If you redeemed a product key, it is generally linked to a Microsoft account for future installations. You usually reinstall from that account rather than entering the key again. Microsoft explains product-key redemption and account association in its installation guide.
If “Install apps” is missing
First check that you signed in with the right account. For work or school accounts, ask your administrator to confirm that your plan includes desktop apps and that a license has been assigned. Some organization-managed or volume-license installations use an IT-controlled process; Microsoft directs volume-license users to their IT department.

Step 2: Download and install Microsoft 365
On the account page, choose Install apps and select the Microsoft 365 apps option if it appears. Then follow the instructions for your computer.
On Windows
- Choose Install apps and download the setup file.
- Run the downloaded file and follow the installer prompts. If Windows asks whether to allow the app to make changes, approve it to continue.
Microsoft installs the 64-bit version by default in the standard case. If an existing 32-bit Office installation is present, the installer may choose 32-bit instead. To change between 32-bit and 64-bit, uninstall Office first, then select the desired version in the installation window; check compatibility before changing architecture. If your personal PC came with Office preinstalled, Microsoft’s reinstall instructions for PCs that came with Office recommend uninstalling the apps first and reinstalling from the Microsoft account dashboard. That guide describes online and offline installer choices.
On Mac
- Download the Office installer package from the account page.
- In Finder, open Downloads and double-click the Microsoft Office installer package.
- Follow the prompts. You may be asked for a local administrator password.
Step 3: Open an app and activate
When installation finishes, open Word, Excel, or another Office app and follow any activation prompts. On Microsoft’s standard PC flow, activation usually completes after you start an app and accept the Microsoft Software License terms. If asked to sign in, use the account that has the license.

What reinstalling changes—and what it does not
Uninstalling removes the Office applications, not the documents, workbooks, or other files you created with them, according to Microsoft’s Windows uninstall guidance. The Windows removal procedure differs depending on whether Office was installed as Click-to-Run, Windows Installer (MSI), or from the Microsoft Store. In most cases, you cannot remove just one application from a suite.
To uninstall Office apps on a Mac, Microsoft directs users to Finder > Applications, select the Office apps, and move them to the Bin. Administrator access is required. See Microsoft’s Mac uninstall instructions.
Can I reinstall Office on a new computer?
It depends on the license. A Microsoft 365 subscription is managed through the account tied to that subscription. Perpetual editions such as Office Home & Business, Home & Student, and Professional have different terms: Microsoft describes these editions as installable on one computer. A transfer or reinstallation after a hardware change can require activation steps under the license terms. Check Microsoft’s guidance for transferring an Office license and the terms for your exact edition before moving it.
