Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo reduce smoke exposure indoors, close windows and doors, set up one cooler interior room as a clean-air space, and filter its air with a properly sized portable air cleaner. Run central HVAC on recirculate if available, using a MERV-13-or-higher filter only if the system can safely handle it. These steps reduce exposure; they cannot make a home completely smoke-proof. If the closed-up home gets too hot, move to a cooler place with cleaner air.
Set up a cleaner-air room
Choose an interior room with few windows and doors, such as a bedroom. Close the room’s windows and doors while smoke is present, and spend as much time there as practical. AirNow says clean-air rooms can help reduce smoke exposure indoors, not eliminate it. See AirNow’s guidance on what to do when smoke is in the air.
Run a portable air cleaner continuously
Use a portable HEPA air cleaner sized for the room and run it continuously during the smoke period. AirNow recommends the highest fan speed to maximize filtration when that setting is practical. Avoid air cleaners that generate ozone. No model-level ranking or percentage reduction is established in the cited guidance, so focus on room suitability, filtration, and avoiding ozone rather than assuming a particular device will make the room smoke-free.
Use central HVAC only within its limits
If your home has central air, run the system to filter indoor air. Where available, choose “Recirculate” and “On” rather than “Auto,” and close the fresh-air intake during smoke. A MERV-13-or-higher HVAC filter is an option only if your system can safely accommodate it; a more restrictive filter is not automatically suitable for every system. Replace filters more often during heavy smoke, and ask a qualified HVAC professional if you are unsure what your equipment supports.

Reduce additional particles indoors
Smoke entering from outside is not the only source of airborne particles. During smoky conditions, avoid activities and appliances that add pollution where feasible:
- Avoid frying food.
- Do not sweep or vacuum.
- Avoid using gas, propane, or wood-burning stoves and furnaces.
- Do not smoke indoors.
These precautions limit additional particles; they do not remove smoke that has already entered the home.

Keep the room safe and comfortable
Closing windows can help limit smoke, but heat matters too. Use air conditioning, a heat pump, fans, or window shades to keep the clean-air room comfortably cool when possible. Do not stay in an overheated room just to keep the windows shut. If you cannot keep the home cool, go to a clean-air shelter, another cooled building with good filtration, or a trusted friend or family member’s home.
Check local smoke conditions
Use the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map for local fine-particle pollution (PM2.5) information and changes in conditions. The map includes smoke and fire information, exposure-reduction steps, and smoke forecasts where available. Check it alongside local advisories: smoke can change over the course of a day, and conditions can vary by location. AirNow’s wildfire-smoke factsheets are June 2026 editions; the factsheet page was updated September 1, 2026. Recheck official guidance during an event.

Take extra care with higher-risk household members
AirNow identifies people with lung disease, including asthma and COPD, people with heart disease, children and teenagers, older adults (generally 65 and older), and people more likely to be exposed as groups at greater risk of more severe effects. Its guidance also notes potential greater risk for pregnant people and for people with limited access to exposure-reduction measures. Prioritize a cleaner-air room for anyone in these groups, and follow local health and emergency advice.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If you must go outside
Reduce time outdoors and avoid strenuous activity while smoke is present. AirNow says cloth masks will not protect against wildfire smoke and that N95 respirators can provide protection. The EPA’s 2026 interagency Wildfire Smoke: A Guide for Public Health Officials says a closely fitting, NIOSH-certified N95 or P100 particulate respirator can help reduce personal exposure to smoke and ash. Treat a respirator as a measure for unavoidable exposure—not a substitute for cleaner indoor air—and follow local emergency instructions.
