A rainbow sheen under a screen protector is not automatically a sign that your phone display is damaged. If it changes with the viewing angle or is most noticeable with the display off, it may be an optical effect. Haze that comes with bubbles, dust, lifting, uneven coating, poor fit, or changes to display quality is more likely to need attention. Check the screen and protector before deciding whether to wait or replace the film.
First, check whether the pattern changes with the screen or viewing angle
- Turn the display on. Note whether the rainbow pattern disappears, becomes less visible, or remains.
- Change the viewing angle. Look straight on, then from a slant, without pressing on the screen.
- Inspect the protector and its edges. Look for oil-like marks, uneven appearance, trapped dust, bubbles, lifting, misalignment, or a size mismatch.
A pattern that appears mainly with the display off or at an angle can be an optical effect. Moshi describes this behavior with its protectors as natural and not a defect. The viewing-angle check is a clue, not a definitive diagnosis: a protector problem can also produce visible patterns.

Samsung’s warning concerns possible issues with some unauthorized third-party films on Galaxy devices, not every third-party protector. Its listed concerns include rainbow-like or oil-stain appearance, uneven coating, bubbles or attachment trouble, dust at an edge, and incorrect sizing.

Samsung Electronics America: defects caused by third-party protective films
If the protector was just installed, follow its own instructions
Installation residue or a line may not mean the display is faulty, but how long to wait depends on the specific film. Samsung China’s guidance for its official anti-reflective film says the line may disappear naturally after a few days as the film adapts to the screen. That is product-specific advice, not a universal timeline.

The same Samsung guidance says dust can cause bubbles and directs users to begin with a clean, dust-free screen and use the supplied cleaning items, including the cloth and dust-removal sticker. For another protector, use its maker’s cleaning and installation directions instead; the available guidance does not establish a universal cleaning liquid or a safe method for repeatedly peeling and reseating films.

When replacement makes sense
Consider replacing a protector if it is damaged, persistently shows uneven coating or attachment problems, traps dust or bubbles that its instructions do not resolve, or does not fit the device properly. Choose a protector made for the exact phone model. For Galaxy devices, Samsung recommends compatible or Samsung-certified accessories; its certification program verifies quality for accessories bearing the Designed for Samsung logo. Certification does not guarantee that every optical effect will disappear.
- Confirm the exact phone model and edge fit.
- Check whether the product is official or carries a relevant manufacturer certification.
- Read the installation instructions and see whether alignment and dust-removal materials are included.
- Check that the protector is compatible with the phone’s touch, fingerprint, and anti-reflective features.
No particular brand or adhesive design is established as a guaranteed fix for rainbow effects. Replacement is not necessary for every pattern that changes with the viewing angle.

Extra caution for foldable phones
For the Galaxy Z Flip and Z Fold situations covered by Samsung Electronics Service Korea’s guidance, users should not independently attach or remove film because doing so may damage the panel. If the issue is on a foldable’s inner screen, get advice for the exact model from the manufacturer or a service center before touching the film.
