Reduce LLM token usage by measuring the complete request, removing context that does not help with the task, reusing stable prefixes where caching is supported, and asking for only the output your application needs. Then test each change against representative tasks: a shorter prompt is not a win if it drops evidence or produces incomplete answers.
The useful target is the smallest sufficient request and response—not the shortest possible prompt. Token counts, costs, cache behavior, and quality depend on the model, provider, request format, and workload, so there is no universal compression ratio that preserves quality.
Where are LLM tokens being spent?
Start with actual usage for the complete request, not a word count or the visible prompt alone. Depending on the API and model, usage may include input, output, cached input, and reasoning tokens; message structure, tool definitions, schemas, images, and files can affect counts too. OpenAI explains token counting and these request-level complications in its token guidance.

Estimate usage with the target model’s tokenizer or complete-request counting facility when available, then inspect the API’s actual usage after the call. A plain-text estimate can miss framing and non-text content. Compare outcomes alongside token counts: fewer input tokens do not necessarily mean a cheaper, faster, or better request if output, repeated calls, or lost correctness offset the saving.
Build an evaluation set before optimizing
Use examples that represent normal traffic as well as difficult cases: long histories, exceptions, time-sensitive facts, and questions that depend on exact details. Decide what counts as a correct and complete result before editing the prompt. A response-preference score or shorter output alone cannot establish that an application still does its job.
Provider documentation recommends evaluation-guided optimization, but the acceptance criteria need to match your application. Keep the same examples and scoring method before and after each change so token savings can be weighed against regressions.
Which parts of a request should I shorten first?
Remove material that does not help answer the current task, not material merely because it is long. Inspect the full payload: system and developer directions, tool schemas, conversation history, retrieved documents, examples, and user input. Redundancy, stale context, irrelevant retrieval, and unused tools are common candidates.
| Request component | Potential change | Quality risk to test |
|---|---|---|
| Instructions | Remove duplicated rules and resolve conflicting directions. | A supposedly redundant instruction may be the only one that handles an important exception. |
| Conversation history | Drop irrelevant turns or use a bounded history window. | Earlier facts, constraints, or user preferences may no longer be available. |
| Retrieved context | Filter for relevance, remove overlapping chunks, and tune retrieval depth. | Filtering too aggressively can remove the evidence needed to answer. |
| Tools and schemas | Include only tools relevant to the current task when the application supports dynamic loading. | A removed tool or field can make an action unavailable or an output unusable. |
| Examples | Keep examples that clarify behavior the task actually needs. | Removing a useful edge case may weaken consistency on that case. |
How should I trim retrieval context?
For retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), measure retrieval quality alongside token use. Tune the number of returned passages (often called top-k) and relevance thresholds against your evaluation set, deduplicate overlapping chunks, and order time-sensitive material deliberately. Microsoft presents these as implementation considerations in its Azure RAG prompt-engineering guidance; they are starting points to test, not universally optimal settings.
Keep enough source material to support reliable answers. A passage that repeats another may be wasteful, but a short excerpt can omit a qualification that changes the answer. Evaluate both ordinary questions and those that depend on exceptions or specific source details before lowering retrieval depth or applying stricter filters.
Can I summarize a long conversation instead?
Sometimes, but summarization trades context length for an additional inference step and the possibility of information loss. A summary can omit a number, exception, preference, or distinction that a later turn needs. Microsoft lists summarization as one way to manage context overflow while recognizing that tradeoff.
Compare the summary-based version with the full-history version on cases that rely on earlier facts. If the application uses a bounded history window instead, check that required information remains available when a conversation moves beyond that window.

Does prompt caching reduce token usage?
Prompt caching reuses processing for a matching, eligible prefix in providers that support it. It can reduce the cost of repeated input, but it does not remove the context from the logical request, make new suffixes free, or guarantee a cache hit.
When many requests share instructions, tool definitions, or reference material, keep that stable portion identical and place request-specific content afterward if the provider’s cache matches prefixes. OpenAI’s prompt-caching documentation describes prefix reuse and its requirements. Rewriting an earlier part of the prefix can prevent reuse, so monitor actual cache-read usage rather than assuming a cache is being hit.
OpenAI states that supported configurations can receive up to a 95% cached-input discount. That is a maximum, not a forecast for a particular application. Eligibility, minimum prefix lengths, cache lifetime, model, and pricing can differ; compute total cost using current provider terms and the workload’s observed usage. OpenAI also notes: “Prompt caching does not change how the model generates output tokens.”

How do I make a cache-friendly request?
- Put stable system and developer instructions first.
- Keep reusable tool definitions and reference text byte-for-byte consistent when the provider requires exact prefix matching.
- Append the user question, session-specific data, and other changing material after the stable prefix.
- Track cache-read tokens, uncached input, output, and total cost separately.
- Test hit rates under realistic traffic, including deployments where small template edits may invalidate earlier prefixes.
Caching is most useful when the same prefix recurs often enough to amortize the setup. It is not a substitute for removing irrelevant context: every request still carries the logical conversation, and new suffixes still consume tokens. Cached-token prices and retention rules are provider- and model-specific, so recalculate when either changes.
How can I cut output tokens without losing necessary detail?
Specify the deliverable the application actually needs: a format, a number of items, or an approximate response length. For example, an application that consumes a short list should not request an open-ended explanation. Structured formats can help constrain output, but remove syntax only when the consuming schema remains unambiguous.
Prefer a clear target over an aggressively low hard maximum. A cap can stop an answer mid-sentence, omit required fields, or produce invalid structured data. Apple warns that limiting tokens can cause incomplete or grammatically incorrect responses. Its Foundation Models documentation describes a 4,096-token session context window for the on-device model covered on that page; this is specific to that framework and model, not a general LLM context limit. See Apple’s context-window guidance for the platform-specific caveats.
If a hard output limit is necessary, make truncation detectable and define a recovery path—for example, reject incomplete structured output or request a continuation where the API and application support it. Test that path on long or edge-case responses instead of judging only short examples.

Separate the maximum the model may generate from the amount the user normally needs. For JSON or another machine-readable format, validate syntax and required fields before accepting a response. A shorter response that fails validation can trigger a retry and consume more tokens than a slightly longer valid response. Record retries in your cost and latency metrics; otherwise an apparent output saving can hide extra calls.
Should I combine multiple model calls?
Combining compatible subtasks can avoid repeated round trips and duplicated context. It works best when the combined request remains clear and its output fields can be checked independently. For instance, a single request might return several named fields rather than making separate calls that each receive the same instructions and source material.
Do not combine tasks just to reduce call count if doing so makes the instructions ambiguous or lowers reliability. Separate calls can be easier to debug and may suit complex workflows better. Compare total tokens, latency, call count, and task quality for both designs on the same examples.

Compare optimization levers by the cost they actually affect
| Lever | Usually changes | Main dependency or risk |
|---|---|---|
| Context pruning | Uncached input tokens and sometimes latency | Removing evidence can reduce correctness; retrieval must be evaluated. |
| Output targeting | Output tokens and often generation latency | Caps can truncate answers or invalidate structured output. |
| Prefix caching | Price of repeated input processing | Savings depend on eligible prefix matches, cache rules, and reuse frequency. |
| Call consolidation | Round trips and duplicated input | A combined prompt may be harder to follow or evaluate. |
| History summarization | Input size after the summary step | The summary call adds work and may lose important facts. |
Use the comparison that matches your goal. If the bottleneck is generation latency, trimming a large prompt may have little effect. OpenAI’s latency guide reports a 1–5% latency improvement from cutting prompt tokens by 50% in many ordinary cases, while noting that massive contexts can behave differently. The same guide says, “Generating tokens is almost always the highest latency step when using an LLM.” These are provider observations, not guarantees about every model or network.
How should I evaluate a token-saving change?
Change one thing at a time, run the same representative examples, and keep an optimization only if it reduces the relevant cost without an unacceptable quality regression. This makes it possible to identify whether a gain came from retrieval filtering, a shorter answer target, caching, or another change—and to roll back a change that harmed a particular case.
- Choose a baseline. Save the current prompts and request settings, usage, latency, cost, and quality results for your evaluation examples.
- Make one targeted change. For example, remove duplicate retrieved chunks without also changing the answer format.
- Rerun the same examples. Compare correctness and completeness as well as input, output, cached-input, and reasoning usage where exposed.
- Check failure cases. Review any changed or failed responses, especially those involving long context, exceptions, and exact details.
- Keep or revert. Keep the change only if its measured savings justify any quality or engineering tradeoff.
AWS’s Generative AI Lens supports rigorous evaluation of prompt changes. Its token-consumption guidance also discusses efficient prompt engineering. No single shortening method or compression ratio is established as safe for every workload.
Roll out changes safely
Keep the baseline prompt versioned and expose token, cost, latency, cache-hit, retry, and quality metrics by model and task type. Start with a limited traffic slice or offline test set, then compare results over enough requests to reveal long-context and exception cases. A change that helps one route may hurt another, so segment dashboards rather than relying only on a global average.

Can a managed prompt optimizer do this for me?
Managed tools can help generate or compare prompt revisions, but their suitability depends on the prompt, evaluation method, models, region, and current service availability. Treat a proposed rewrite as a candidate to test—not proof that answer quality is preserved.
AWS describes simple Amazon Bedrock prompt optimization as a heuristic rewrite suited to a short prompt of approximately 1,000 tokens or less; that figure is the feature’s recommended range, not a general prompt limit, and the simple feature does not use evaluation data. See the Bedrock prompt-optimization documentation for current details.
AWS’s May 14, 2026 announcement for Advanced Prompt Optimization describes metric-guided comparisons across up to five models. The announcement’s availability and billing details applied at launch and may change; check current regional availability, supported models, and charges before planning around it. Even with metric-guided comparison, the result is only as meaningful as the ground-truth examples and metric used. The AWS announcement explains the launch feature.
How do provider-specific token and latency claims apply?
Provider documentation is useful for understanding that provider’s features and reported results, but it is not a neutral cross-provider benchmark. Apply published figures only to the model, workload, usage type, geography, and date they describe.
- OpenAI latency: Its latency guide says cutting prompt tokens by 50% can improve latency by 1–5% in many ordinary cases, while massive contexts may differ. This is a latency observation, not a cost estimate or universal result. The same guide says, “Generating tokens is almost always the highest latency step when using an LLM,” so output reduction may be more consequential for latency in many applications.
- Anthropic cost guidance: Its optimization guide reports workload-specific results, including a 2.7–5.5 cost factor for a research agent and reductions of 83–86% for small triage agents. Anthropic describes its benchmark results as directional. They are not a prediction of savings for another team’s workload.
- Apple context management: Apple’s 4,096-token session figure applies to the on-device Foundation Model discussed in its framework documentation, not other Apple models or LLMs generally.
For implementation ideas across providers, Azure’s RAG guidance and AWS’s token-efficiency recommendations are useful starting points; neither supplies a universal retrieval count or token budget. Choose settings based on your own task results and the current terms of the service you use.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes that erase token savings
- Counting only visible text. Tool schemas, role markers, attachments, images, and structured fields can materially change the billable request.
- Assuming a cache hit. A small change to an earlier prefix can invalidate reuse; inspect cache-read usage.
- Trimming by character count. Removing text without checking relevance can delete a needed exception or qualification.
- Setting a severe output cap. Truncation can cause retries, invalid data, or an answer that fails the user’s task.
- Optimizing an average only. A lower mean token count can hide failures on the long or legally important cases that matter most.
- Comparing vendor claims without matching conditions. Model, region, input type, cache status, date, and workload all affect prices and savings.

It can provide broader context for designing a context pipeline, but a book description is not a substitute for testing your own application.
Frequently asked implementation questions
Use a tokenizer or complete-request counting facility for estimates, then verify actual usage in responses. Keep quality checks tied to the task, not just to token totals.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do character counts reliably estimate LLM token counts?
No. Tokenization depends on the model, and a complete request may include message framing, tool definitions, schemas, or multimodal content that a plain-text character count misses. Use a tokenizer or request-counting facility for estimates, then verify actual API usage.

Will a shorter prompt always make an LLM response faster?
No. Latency depends on the full request and generation, and the benefit from trimming input varies by workload. OpenAI’s published latency guidance is specific to its observations; measure end-to-end latency on the model and application you run.
Can prompt caching make new user messages free?
No. Cache reuse applies to an eligible repeated prefix, while the new suffix still needs processing and a cache hit is not guaranteed. Check the provider’s current cache rules and actual usage details for your requests.
Is there a safe percentage by which every LLM prompt can be shortened?
No universal quality-preserving percentage is established. The right limit depends on which context is essential to the task, so assess correctness and completeness on representative examples before adopting a shorter version.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Does cutting input tokens always reduce the bill?
Not necessarily. Input, cached input, output, and reasoning tokens may have different prices, and a shorter prompt can trigger longer answers, retries, or extra calls. Calculate total cost from actual usage categories for the model you run.
Should I summarize every long conversation?
No. Summaries can reduce context but add an inference step and may lose facts, exceptions, or preferences. Compare a summary with full history on cases that depend on earlier details before adopting it.
How many retrieved chunks should a RAG prompt include?
There is no universal top-k value. Tune retrieval depth and relevance thresholds against correctness and completeness, deduplicate overlapping chunks, and preserve enough evidence for exception cases.
Is a 95% cache discount typical?
No. OpenAI describes up to a 95% cached-input discount for supported configurations. It is a maximum, not an expected saving; eligibility, prefix matching, cache lifetime, model, and traffic determine observed results.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

No. Heuristic or metric-guided rewrites produce candidates. Their value depends on the examples, ground-truth data, metric, models, region, and current service terms, so validate the result on your own workload.
The Bottom Line
Measure complete requests first, then remove only context that does not support the task, keep reusable prefixes stable for caching, and specify the smallest sufficient output. Validate every change for correctness, completeness, cost, latency, retries, and cache behavior; there is no universal safe compression percentage.
