For the best chance of responsive game audio, use the wireless connection your headset maker designed for gaming—often its included 2.4 GHz USB transceiver—instead of assuming ordinary Bluetooth will behave the same. Then check that your platform and game are using the headset’s intended audio output and microphone input. For clearer chat, confirm the mic is unmuted, selected, permitted, and set to a usable level.
1. Check the gaming connection and audio devices
- Connect the intended gaming transceiver. If your headset came with a USB wireless transceiver, connect it to a supported port and make sure the headset is paired. A model may use different connections for gaming and Bluetooth, so check its instructions rather than assuming they are interchangeable. Sony’s INZONE H9/H7 setup guidance covers the USB transceiver and pairing.
- Select the headset in your platform’s audio settings. Choose the headset’s game output and chat or microphone input where those options are available. Sony’s INZONE guide describes selecting the appropriate game and chat devices. Exact names and menus vary by model and platform.
- Check the game or chat app too. Select the headset microphone and output in the app if it has its own device settings. A system-level selection does not always mean the game is using the same devices.
There is no reliable universal latency figure for “wireless gaming headsets”: latency depends on the headset, connection mode, and platform, and the cited support pages do not provide comparable measurements. Some models support wired connections, but their compatibility and microphone behavior are model-specific; follow the headset documentation.
2. Troubleshoot dropouts, skipping, or apparent delay
Check range and nearby wireless devices
Move closer to the console or computer and test again. If the audio still cuts out, temporarily move nearby Bluetooth devices away or disconnect them to see whether the connection improves. PlayStation lists distance and interference from another Bluetooth device among possible causes of wireless headset problems in its wireless headset troubleshooting guidance.
Separate the transceiver from USB 3.0 devices
On PlayStation wireless headset setups, nearby USB 3.0 devices or multiple wireless adapters can be worth checking. PlayStation recommends moving the wireless adapter away from USB devices or other adapters, using a USB extension cable where appropriate. This is a troubleshooting step for a setup with those symptoms and nearby devices—not a guaranteed latency improvement for every headset. Check the cable connector and platform requirements before buying one.

3. Make your microphone easier to hear
- Rule out mute first. Check the headset’s physical mute switch, mic button, or flip-to-mute boom position.
- Choose the correct microphone. Set the headset mic as the input device in the operating system and in the game or chat app.
- Allow microphone access. Confirm the operating system permits the app to use the microphone. Bungie’s Destiny 2 Windows audio guidance, for example, calls out microphone permission.
- Adjust input level gradually and test in the app. Increase the level only enough for teammates to hear you clearly; maximum gain is not automatically best. Use the actual game or chat app’s mic test or a brief conversation to check the result.
Controls differ by device. On PlayStation, use the console’s Adjust Microphone Level setting. Sony’s INZONE Hub provides microphone controls on supported models, including input-level options and a mic test. These paths and features are not universal across headset brands.
If teammates hear their own voices echoing, PlayStation’s headset troubleshooting instructions recommend lowering the microphone-level fader by two to four notches. Recheck with other players after each adjustment.

4. Test Bluetooth and platform routing separately
If your headset is connected to a phone over Bluetooth while connected to a PC or PS5 through 2.4 GHz, disconnect Bluetooth temporarily and test voice chat again. Sony documents a specific behavior for its INZONE H9, H7, H6 Air, H5, and H3 models: during simultaneous 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth use, mic input may go to the Bluetooth-connected call or chat device, preventing PC or PS5 chat. See Sony’s simultaneous connection guidance. Do not assume other brands behave the same way.
Also verify that your exact headset supports your platform and connection method. For example, Microsoft describes its Xbox Wireless Headset as supporting Xbox consoles, Windows PCs, and Bluetooth mobile connections, with customization in the Xbox Accessories app. Platform support and features such as voice isolation or auto-mute depend on the specific model; a “wireless” label alone does not establish compatibility.

5. Reset only with the instructions for your model
If pairing, routing, range, and microphone settings do not resolve the problem, follow the headset maker’s procedure for re-pairing, resetting, or restoring the exact model. PlayStation’s troubleshooting page includes restoration guidance and directs users to PlayStation Support if its steps fail. Sony provides model-specific software and connection guidance. Avoid applying a reset sequence from a different headset.
