You can make an iPhone easier to view by adjusting brightness and accessibility settings, but software cannot remove reflections from the glass. If reflections remain the problem, consider a screen protector made for your exact iPhone model: either a matte anti-glare finish or a clear protector with an anti-reflective coating.
Adjust the display for bright surroundings
When the screen is hard to see outdoors or under bright lights, first adjust its brightness. Open Control Center and move the brightness slider, or go to Settings > Display & Brightness. Apple also documents Auto-Brightness, which uses the iPhone’s built-in ambient light sensor to respond to surrounding light. Leave it on if you want the screen to adjust automatically; Apple warns that turning it off may increase power use. Apple’s brightness and display-color guide explains these controls.
More brightness can help the screen compete with ambient light, but it does not stop a lamp, window, or the sun from reflecting off the glass. It can also make a bright screen more intense, so adjust it to what is comfortable and visible rather than assuming maximum brightness will solve reflections.
Use accessibility and color settings for screen intensity
Reduce White Point
If bright colors feel harsh or the display seems too intense, go to Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Reduce White Point. Apple says this setting tones down the intensity of bright colors. It changes how the display looks; it is not a physical anti-reflection treatment. See Apple’s guide to changing display colors.

Night Shift and Dark Mode
Night Shift shifts display colors warmer, while Dark Mode uses a dark color scheme that Apple describes for low-light environments. These options can suit particular lighting or viewing preferences, but neither is described as a way to remove reflections from the screen surface. Apple’s brightness and color guide covers them.
For visible reflections, consider a physical screen protector
If you can see reflected objects on the glass even after adjusting the display, the relevant option is a physical surface treatment rather than an app or setting. A matte anti-glare protector is intended to diffuse reflections; a clear protector with an anti-reflective coating is another category to compare if you prefer a clear finish. The evidence available here does not quantify how these approaches affect crispness or color across products, so check product details and reviews for the exact protector and phone you are considering.

Protector fit is model-specific. Select your exact iPhone generation and verify compatibility before buying. For example, Belkin documents an anti-glare protector for iPhone 7 and 7 Plus; that is evidence of the product category, not a recommendation for newer iPhones. X.One lists AR and matte variants with selectable iPhone models, but its product descriptions are manufacturer claims, not independent comparative testing.
Check whether your iPhone already has an anti-reflective treatment
Surface treatments can vary by generation, so do not assume a protector will behave identically on every iPhone. MacRumors reported that iPhone 17 Ceramic Shield 2 includes an anti-reflective coating. The same report says Astropad testing measured approximately 50% fewer reflections than on iPhone 16. That figure is a reported, model-specific comparison from Astropad, which sells a screen protector and promoted the testing; it is not a general guarantee for other iPhones or for aftermarket matte protectors. Choose based on the problem you want to solve
- The display is difficult to see in bright surroundings: adjust brightness, and decide whether Auto-Brightness is useful for your changing conditions.
- Bright colors feel too intense: try Reduce White Point; Night Shift and Dark Mode are separate color and viewing-preference options.
- You can see reflected objects in the glass: compare a model-compatible matte anti-glare protector with a clear anti-reflective-coated protector.
- Your iPhone may have a built-in anti-reflective surface: check the treatment for your specific generation before choosing an additional protector.
No broadly applicable independent comparison establishes how much glare reduction or image change to expect from matte and clear coated protectors across iPhone models. Choose by exact model compatibility and your preference between a matte surface and a clearer finish, rather than relying on a result reported for a different phone.
