For the cleanest image on a BOOX Note Air6 C, use HD refresh for books, documents, and still notes; switch to Smooth, Balanced, or Fast only when scrolling or app interaction needs more speed; and trigger a full refresh when trails build up. Color improves when you judge pages under a cool, comfortable front light and make small adjustments with Dark Color Enhancement or Light Color Filter. These steps can reduce residual images and improve perceived contrast, but they cannot make the 10.3-inch Kaleido 3 panel look like an LCD: its color layer is 150 ppi, its background is reflective and somewhat gray, and it displays 4,096 colors.

Why does the Note Air6 C show ghosting and muted color?

Ghosting is a faint remnant of a previous page or object that remains after an E Ink pixel changes state. It is most visible after scrolling, turning pages with illustrations, dragging a window, or using an Android app with frequent animation. Color can look less vivid for a separate reason: Kaleido 3 places a color filter layer over an E Ink display, so color detail is lower resolution and depends heavily on ambient and front lighting.

The Note Air6 C uses a 10.3-inch Kaleido 3 glass display. BOOX specifies 300 ppi for black-and-white content, 150 ppi for color, and 4,096 colors. Small colored type therefore has softer edges than black text, and thin colored lines can merge. An independent Frandroid review found the monochrome background somewhat gray with less-deep blacks, while considering saturation comparatively good for a color E Ink screen.

Because the display is reflective, the room and front-light settings change the result you perceive. A warm light can make a page look yellower; a cool light usually gives a more neutral reference for judging color. No refresh setting can raise the color layer above its 150 ppi limit or turn reflective E Ink into a self-emissive LCD.

Which refresh mode gives the best balance between ghosting, detail, and speed?

BOOX’s Mobile ePaper manual defines four refresh modes. HD prioritizes display quality, while Balanced, Fast, and Ultrafast trade progressively more detail for quicker response. Choose according to what is on screen rather than leaving the fastest mode enabled all day.

Mode Residual ghosting Detail and color fidelity Refresh speed Best use
HD Lowest of the four in normal use Highest; preserves fine text and illustration detail Slowest Books, documents, still PDF pages, handwriting you are inspecting
Balanced Moderate Moderate; some trails and tonal loss are acceptable Faster than HD Ordinary scrolling and mixed reading/app use
Fast More noticeable Lower; fine detail and subtle color can be sacrificed Fast Interactive apps, rapid lists, and cases where latency matters
Ultrafast Highest likelihood of trails Lowest of the four Fastest Short bursts of highly interactive content, not color-critical reading

Start in HD whenever you are evaluating a page, reading dense text, or checking an illustration. Move to Balanced or Fast for scrolling, then return to HD before inspecting small type or color transitions. Ultrafast is a responsiveness option, not a quality setting.

How do I change the refresh mode?

The exact location of the control can vary between the built-in reader and third-party Android apps, but the operation is the same: open the app’s e-paper or refresh controls, select a mode, and test it on the content you actually use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the book, PDF, note, or Android app that is showing trails or lag.
  2. Open the on-screen refresh/e-paper control from the app toolbar or the device control panel.
  3. Select HD for a quality-first test. Wait for the next page turn or scroll to complete before judging it.
  4. If scrolling feels too slow, repeat the process and choose Balanced or Fast.
  5. After the interaction-heavy task, switch back to HD before assessing fine text, line art, or subtle color.

Judge a mode after several actions rather than one tap. A fast mode may appear clean on a static page but leave a visible pattern after repeated scrolling.

When should I use Smooth Mode?

BOOX says its Super Refresh (BSR) technology includes Smooth Mode to reduce visual lag and ghosting during page turns, scrolling, and dynamic content in third-party apps. Use Smooth Mode when an app exposes it and responsiveness is the problem, especially in feeds, browsers, canvases, or other animated interfaces.

Smooth Mode is not a replacement for HD when you need maximum tonal accuracy. Treat it as an interaction setting: enable it for the task, then use HD or a manual full refresh when you return to static reading. If an app offers both Smooth Mode and its own refresh selector, test one change at a time so you can identify which setting affects trails.

How do I clear persistent afterimages with a full refresh?

A full refresh redraws the complete screen instead of updating only changed areas. Use it when a previous page, toolbar, or image remains visible after you have already changed to a quality-oriented mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Stop scrolling or editing so the display is stable.
  2. Invoke the device or app’s full refresh command from its e-paper controls.
  3. Wait for the refresh flash to finish, then inspect a text-heavy and an image-heavy area.
  4. If trails return during a long session, configure an automatic full-refresh cadence if that option is available.

Frandroid’s review reports cadence choices of a full refresh after every tap or after every 30 taps. Every-tap refreshing produces the cleanest intermediate images but causes more visible flashes and can consume more power. Every 30 taps reduces interruptions; choose it when the remaining image is tolerable, and use a manual refresh for pages with large photographs, maps, or dense colored diagrams.

How should I set the front light before judging color?

Set the dual-tone front light before changing color filters, and keep that setting constant while comparing pages. Use the coolest level that remains comfortable for the room and your eyes when you want the most neutral color judgment.

  • Cooler light: usually keeps whites and pale backgrounds looking more neutral, making it the better reference for comparing hues.
  • Warmer light: can be more comfortable in the evening, but shifts perceived colors toward yellow. A cream page may then appear more saturated or less blue than it really is.
  • Lower brightness: reduces front-light color cast but may make the reflective panel look dim in a dark room.
  • Higher brightness: improves legibility in low ambient light, yet can alter how you perceive subtle shading.

Do not compare a page in daylight with the same page under a strong warm front light and conclude that a filter changed the artwork. Match the lighting first, then adjust one display control at a time.

What do Dark Color Enhancement and Light Color Filter do?

These two controls target different parts of the image. The manual describes Dark Color Enhancement as turning darker colors toward black, useful when foreground colors look weak or a light page needs stronger text. Light Color Filter turns light page colors toward white, useful when a background looks gray.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Dark Color Enhancement for weak foregrounds

  1. Open the display or e-paper color controls while viewing the page you want to improve.
  2. Increase Dark Color Enhancement by a small amount.
  3. Check thin colored lines, skin tones, and small labels, not just large headings.
  4. Reduce it if adjacent colors collapse into the same dark mass or if shaded details disappear.

Heavy enhancement can crush detail in dark reds, greens, and blues. The goal is a clearer foreground, not the darkest possible page.

Use Light Color Filter for a gray-looking background

  1. With the same front-light setting, increase Light Color Filter gradually.
  2. Inspect a pale illustration, a gray panel, and the page margin.
  3. Stop when the background looks cleaner without erasing subtle tints.
  4. Back off the control if light shading, paper texture, or pastel fills vanish.

Applying both controls strongly can produce a high-contrast image that looks impressive in a single screenshot but loses intermediate color information. Make the smallest change that solves the problem.

What is the most reliable workflow for reading and color work?

Use this sequence whenever you open a new book, PDF, or app. It separates speed decisions from color judgments, preventing one aggressive setting from hiding another problem.

  1. For reading or static PDF pages, select HD.
  2. For scrolling or interactive Android apps, try Smooth or Balanced; choose Fast only when the extra responsiveness is worth losing detail.
  3. If afterimages accumulate, invoke a full refresh. For image-heavy work, consider the every-tap cadence; use every 30 taps when occasional trails are acceptable.
  4. Set the front-light color temperature before evaluating artwork. Compare pages under the same room lighting.
  5. Use Dark Color Enhancement for weak foreground colors and Light Color Filter for a grayish background. Reduce either control if small color details disappear.
  6. Return to HD and perform a final full refresh before making a close color or text inspection.

What hardware limits should I keep in mind?

The Note Air6 C’s specifications explain why settings can improve perception but cannot eliminate every limitation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Specification Why it matters here
10.3-inch Kaleido 3 glass display Provides a large reading and note area while using a reflective color E Ink layer.
4,096 colors Color illustrations and highlights are possible, but the palette and tonal steps remain unlike a full-color LCD.
300 ppi black-and-white resolution Supports sharper monochrome text and line work than the color layer can provide.
150 ppi color resolution Explains softer colored edges and the loss of very small colored details.
6GB RAM and 64GB storage Provide room for Android reading, note-taking, and document apps; they do not increase panel resolution.
Android 16 Allows current Android applications, whose scrolling and animation may need Smooth, Balanced, or Fast modes.
3,700mAh battery Frequent full refreshes and high front-light brightness can affect runtime, so use the least aggressive cadence that keeps the page clean.

BOOX’s launch material describes the Note Air6 C as 40% faster than the Note Air5 C in performance or page handling. That is not a standardized measurement of ghosting reduction, color accuracy, or saturation, so it should not be read as a display-quality percentage.

How do I troubleshoot a specific display problem?

Symptom Likely cause Action
Text or an image remains after scrolling A speed-oriented mode or accumulated partial updates Switch to HD, then perform a full refresh; reduce the automatic cadence only after the image is acceptable.
Scrolling is clean enough but feels sluggish HD is prioritizing quality over response Try Balanced, then Fast if needed. Return to HD for close reading.
Colors look yellow or warmer than expected Warm front-light tone Move toward a cooler comfortable setting and compare under unchanged room lighting.
Background looks gray Reflective E Ink appearance or insufficient light filtering Increase Light Color Filter slightly; stop before pale artwork loses its shading.
Dark colors merge together Too much Dark Color Enhancement Lower the enhancement and inspect small colored details again.
Frequent flashes interrupt work Full refresh set too often Use a less frequent cadence, such as every 30 taps where available, and refresh manually for critical pages.
Third-party app leaves animated remnants App content is dynamic and may not use the same refresh behavior as the built-in reader Enable Smooth Mode if exposed, test Balanced or Fast for interaction, and finish with HD plus a full refresh.

Can any setting make the Note Air6 C look like an LCD?

No. Refresh modes control how aggressively the E Ink panel updates; they do not change the 150 ppi color layer, the 4,096-color limit, or the reflective gray character of the display. Filters can strengthen foregrounds or whiten backgrounds, but aggressive values remove information rather than creating new color data.

The practical target is a clean, readable page with color that is consistent for the lighting in which you work. Use HD and full refreshes for inspection, faster modes for interaction, and conservative color controls for the specific defect you can see.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does using a full refresh wear out the Note Air6 C screen?

A full refresh is a normal e-paper operation; the trade-offs documented for frequent use are visible flashing and potentially higher power consumption. Choose a cadence that clears the artifacts without refreshing more often than your work requires.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Why do colors change when I move from daylight to a dark room?

Kaleido 3 is reflective, and the dual-tone front light becomes a larger part of the light reaching your eyes in a dark room. Room illumination and the warm/cool balance can therefore change perceived hue even when the image data has not changed.

Will the optional keyboard folio reduce ghosting while typing?

No. The folio is an input accessory; it does not alter refresh algorithms, color filtering, or the display layer. Use Smooth or Balanced for typing responsiveness and switch to HD when reviewing the finished text.

Why is a black-and-white PDF sharper than its colored version?

Monochrome content uses the panel’s specified 300 ppi layer, while color content is limited to 150 ppi. Colored letters and lines consequently have fewer physical pixels available for edge detail.
