There is no single switch that removes AI from Google, Microsoft, and Apple software. The practical approach is to turn off the narrowest control each company provides: Gemini visibility and permissions in Chrome, personalization and connected-content settings in Google Search, Copilot switches in individual Microsoft apps, Edge’s browsing-context permission, and Apple’s separate Apple Intelligence and Screen Time restrictions.
Menus differ by app, operating-system version, account, language, device, and region. A setting that hides an icon may not disable every route to the feature, while a broad privacy setting can also remove useful non-AI conveniences. Use the product-specific instructions below and check what remains available after each change.
Is there one switch to disable AI across Google, Microsoft, and Apple?
No. Each company exposes controls at a different level: a browser, app, account, device, or connected service. A complete shutdown is therefore a matter of combining several targeted settings rather than changing one global preference.

Work from the narrowest setting that solves your concern. For example, turn off microphone access in Chrome if audio capture is the issue, instead of disabling every connected experience in a productivity suite.

How do I turn off or limit Gemini in Chrome?
Chrome groups Gemini controls under Chrome > Settings > AI innovations > Gemini in Chrome. You can hide its entry points and remove individual permissions without changing ordinary browsing features.
Hide the Gemini icon and system entry points
- Open Chrome and select the three-dot menu, then Settings.
- Open AI innovations and choose Gemini in Chrome.
- Under Preferences, turn the Gemini icon off.
- On supported computers, also disable Gemini’s appearance in the Mac menu bar or the Windows system tray if you do not want those entry points.
These preferences change visibility. They do not by themselves revoke every permission or remove all possible Copilot- or Gemini-related features elsewhere in Google services.
Remove Chrome permissions used by Gemini
In the same Gemini settings page, review Permissions and switch off any access you do not want:
- Precise location, which prevents use of your exact device location.
- Microphone, which blocks microphone access for supported interactions.
- Default tab sharing, which stops automatic sharing of the active tab as the default behavior.
- Let Gemini browse for you, which disables that browsing mode.
Turn off only the permissions that match your concern if you still want other Chrome features. Google says Gemini in Chrome is rolling out over time, so the controls may not yet be available in every country or territory. If the menu is absent, rollout status, account type, Chrome version, or regional availability may be responsible.
How do I reduce AI personalization and cross-app context in Google Search?
Google Search uses separate controls for personalization, activity, and connected content. These settings reduce how much account information can shape Search, but they are not a promise that all AI-generated answers or summaries will vanish.
Opt out of Search personalization
Open Google’s Personal Intelligence or Search personalization controls while signed in. Use the available option to opt out of personalization. Google is updating Search settings, so the wording and location of the control can differ between accounts.
Manage or delete Search activity
From the same account controls, review stored Search activity and delete entries or adjust activity retention as needed. Removing historical activity limits the data available for personalization; it does not erase the public web or prevent every contextual result.

Disconnect connected content apps
Google lets Search connect to content apps such as Gmail, Calendar, and Google Photos. Disconnect any app you do not want Search services to use for account context. This is useful when your concern is cross-app access rather than the visible Search interface.
After changing these settings, test a signed-in Search session and an incognito or signed-out session separately. Different results can reflect personalization state rather than a failure of the setting.
Can I disable Gmail’s smart features without disabling Gmail itself?
Gmail has a bundled smart-features area that can be switched off, but the labels and exact placement change. A secondary settings guide describes the following path: Gmail > Settings > See all settings > General > Google Workspace smart features.
- Open Gmail settings and select See all settings.
- In General, find the Google Workspace smart features section.
- Turn off Smart features in Google Workspace and, if shown, Smart features in other Google products.
- Review any separate Gmail, Chat, and Meet smart-features switch and disable it if you want those suggestions and automation reduced as well.
The trade-off is functional: related conveniences can stop, including automatic extraction of flight and event details into Calendar. Because this information comes from a secondary guide and Gmail interfaces change, use the labels currently displayed in your account rather than assuming every switch appears in every region or Workspace edition.
How do I turn off Copilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote?
Microsoft exposes an Enable Copilot checkbox separately in each supported desktop app and on each device. Disabling it in Word does not automatically disable Copilot in Excel or PowerPoint.
Windows desktop apps
- Open Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or OneNote.
- Select File > Options > Copilot.
- Clear Enable Copilot and apply the change.
Repeat the procedure in every app where you want Copilot disabled. Microsoft describes the checkbox as app-specific and device-specific.
Mac desktop apps
- Open the relevant Microsoft 365 app.
- Use the app menu and choose Preferences.
- Open Authoring and Proofing Tools > Copilot.
- Clear Enable Copilot, then restart the app.
The checkbox is not available in the iOS, Android, or web versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Those versions may expose different controls or no equivalent switch. Microsoft also cautions that removing a Copilot icon from a ribbon does not turn Copilot off; it can remain reachable through other methods, including a shortcut menu.

What to do when the checkbox is missing
First confirm that you are using a supported desktop build and the correct signed-in account. Microsoft lists version prerequisites for the checkbox, and availability can differ by app and platform. If the control is still absent, use the broader privacy setting described in the next section, understanding its additional effects.

Outlook has its own Turn on Copilot toggle, separate from the Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote checkbox.
Find the toggle on each Outlook platform
Microsoft documents paths through Quick Settings or Settings for Android, iOS, Mac, the web, and new Outlook for Windows. Open the settings panel in your version of Outlook, locate Turn on Copilot, and switch it off.
The choice follows the signed-in Outlook account across Outlook devices, so changing it on one supported device can affect the same account elsewhere. Availability depends on the Outlook app version. Classic Outlook for Windows does not have an estimated date for this toggle according to Microsoft; do not assume that its absence means the setting failed.
Because Outlook’s control is account-oriented while the Office checkbox is app- and device-oriented, check both when you use Outlook alongside desktop Word or Excel.

If an Office app does not show Enable Copilot, Microsoft provides a wider Connected experiences setting. It is more powerful than hiding a button, but it carries a significant collateral loss.
Windows path
- Open the Office app’s account area.
- Go to Account Privacy > Manage Settings.
- Clear Turn on experiences that analyze your content under Connected experiences.
Mac path
- Open the app menu and choose Preferences.
- Select Personal Settings > Privacy.
- Open Connected Experiences > Manage Connected Experiences.
- Turn off the content-analysis experiences control.
Microsoft says this broader setting also disables suggested replies, Word text predictions, PowerPoint Designer, automatic alt text, and other features that analyze content. Use it only when the privacy benefit outweighs losing those tools. Re-enable the same setting if you later decide the trade-off is not worthwhile.

How do I stop Edge Copilot from reading my browsing context?
Edge separates browsing-context access from the presence of Copilot itself. You can prevent Copilot from using page and browser context while leaving other Edge features unchanged.
- Open Edge and select More (…).
- Choose Copilot and AI.
- Turn off Allow Copilot to read context clues on the web.
Microsoft says this prevents Copilot from using the current webpage, page title, open tabs, or browser history. It limits the information Copilot can inspect; it does not remove every Copilot entry point or guarantee that Copilot is absent from the browser.

How do I disable Apple Intelligence features on an iPhone?
Apple breaks its AI controls into individual switches rather than one universal off button. Open Settings and then the relevant Siri or app section, and turn off only the features you do not want.
Features with individual controls
- Siri AI, with an option to switch to Siri Classic where supported after disabling the AI version.
- Messages summaries.
- Mail summary previews.
- Notification summaries.
- Priority notifications.
- Personalized Smart Replies.
- Voicemail suggestions.
- Call context cards.
- Journal writing prompts.
The exact path varies by feature: some switches are under the Siri section, while others are inside Messages, Mail, Notifications, Phone, or Journal settings. Turning off one item does not automatically turn off the others, so review each category that matters to you.
Check availability before troubleshooting
Apple Intelligence depends on hardware, software, language, and region. Apple’s cited iOS 27 guide lists Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 16 or later, while also warning that the feature is not available on all models, languages, or regions. If you cannot find a switch, the feature may simply not be supported on that device or in that locale.

- Open Settings > Screen Time.
- Choose Content & Privacy Restrictions and turn restrictions on if necessary.
- Review the available intelligence-related controls and block Writing Tools.
- Block image-creation features such as Image Playground, Genmoji, and Image Wand when those options are listed.
Screen Time availability follows the same device, software, language, and region conditions as other Apple Intelligence controls. If an item is not listed, update eligibility—not a missing toggle—may be the explanation.

Why can’t I find the setting I’m looking for?
Missing menus are usually an availability issue rather than a failed switch. Check these conditions in order:
- App and operating-system version: desktop and mobile editions often expose different controls, and Microsoft’s Copilot checkbox has version prerequisites.
- Account: Outlook’s choice follows the signed-in account, while Office’s checkbox is local to each app and device.
- Device: Apple Intelligence controls require supported iPhone hardware; the cited iOS 27 guide lists iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 16 or later.
- Language and region: Apple and Google both limit availability by locale, and Gemini in Chrome is still rolling out.
- Web versus installed app: Microsoft documents different behavior for Office web, iOS, Android, and desktop versions.
- Changed labels: Google says Search settings are being updated, so a familiar label may have moved or been renamed.
After changing a desktop Copilot preference, restart the app when instructed. If a control remains absent, use the closest narrower setting available rather than enabling a broad privacy fallback without checking its side effects.
How do I restore the features later?
These controls are reversible. Return to the same menu and re-enable the switch: Chrome Gemini preferences and permissions, Google Search personalization or connected apps, the Office Enable Copilot checkbox, Outlook’s Turn on Copilot, Edge’s context permission, Apple’s individual feature switches, or the Screen Time restrictions. For Microsoft desktop apps, restart the app after changing the Copilot checkbox on Mac, and verify the signed-in Outlook account if the change needs to follow you across devices.
