Start by measuring which app or system feature is using power, then restrict only that activity. On an iPhone, Settings > Battery shows daily use and App and System Activity Usage, including background activity. On Android, Settings > Battery provides battery-use details, although names and controls vary by manufacturer and Android version. After identifying the offender, reduce background refresh, location access, notifications, or AI features for that app. Use Low Power Mode on iPhone or Battery Saver on Android when you need a broader, temporary reduction. These controls can delay sync, alerts, navigation and other functions, so change one setting at a time and check the battery screen again after normal use.
Why do AI features and background activity use battery when I am not using my phone?
A phone can perform work while its screen is off. Apps may refresh feeds, synchronize photos, check location, maintain a connection, process notifications or run an on-device model. AI is not one universal process or switch: it can mean writing assistance, notification summaries, photo search, translation, image generation, an assistant, or an app that performs its own processing.
Battery use also comes from ordinary system activity. Apple identifies background activity, location, notifications and weak cellular coverage as contributors. Android notes that the effect depends on the device and that Battery Saver can delay network activity, visual effects, features and apps. There is no official percentage that can be applied to every phone or AI feature; hardware, signal, app behavior and settings determine the result.
How can I find the app or feature responsible before changing settings?
Measure first. A high-use app is a better target than a blanket shutdown, and a single day of unusual travel, poor signal or photo syncing can distort the result.

iPhone: read Daily Usage and App and System Activity Usage
- Open Settings and tap Battery.
- Review Daily Usage to compare the current day with recent days.
- Open App and System Activity Usage and look for an app marked with background activity. Apple uses that entry to indicate that the app consumed battery while active in the background.
- Note whether the same app also appears beside location or notifications. Those categories can point to a permission or alert setting rather than an AI process.
Check after a representative period of use instead of drawing a conclusion from a short spike. For example, a navigation app may be expected to use location during a journey, while a photo app may briefly use power while completing a large upload.
Android: inspect Battery usage, then account for manufacturer differences
- Open Settings and tap Battery. On some phones, the next screen is called Battery usage or has a battery-usage graph.
- Review the list or graph for apps with unusually high use while the screen was off or while you were not actively using them.
- Open an app’s battery details to see the available background, unrestricted, optimized or restricted choices. The labels and exact path vary by phone maker and Android release.
- Check whether the apparent offender is an assistant, keyboard, camera, gallery, cloud-sync or messaging app. AI work may be inside one of those apps rather than labeled “AI.”
Android Help recommends using Adaptive Battery and restricting apps with high battery use. Because manufacturers customize Android, use the support instructions for your particular phone when a setting is not where these names suggest.
Which iPhone settings reduce background activity most effectively?
Use the least disruptive control that addresses the evidence. Per-app settings preserve timely updates for the apps you rely on, while global modes trade convenience for immediate savings.

- Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh.
- Turn the feature off globally, or leave it on and disable individual apps that do not need to update before you open them.
- Recheck Battery after a normal day. If a critical app stops updating as expected, turn refresh back on for that app rather than restoring it everywhere.
Disabling refresh does not remove an app or prevent you from opening it. It can, however, postpone feed updates, uploads or other work until the app is opened or another mechanism runs.
Reduce per-app location access
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.
- Select a nonessential app and choose a less permissive option, such as access only while using the app, when that option is offered, or turn access off.
- Review background-location permission separately if the app has it. Keep location for navigation, emergency, weather, device-finding or geofencing functions that you actually use.
Location can be a larger source of activity than an AI label suggests: an app may repeatedly request a position to trigger a reminder or update a map. Turning Location Services off entirely can prevent apps and features from working, so per-app changes are usually safer.

Stop unnecessary notifications from waking the phone
- Open Settings > Notifications.
- Choose an app that sends low-value alerts and disable its notifications, or turn off only sounds, badges or lock-screen presentation if you still need the alert in another form.
- Repeat for AI-generated summaries or recommendations that you do not read.
Notifications can wake the display, activate radios and prompt follow-up work. Keep alerts for messages, security events, reminders and other time-sensitive information.
Use Low Power Mode for immediate, broad savings
- Go to Settings > Battery > Power Mode > Low Power Mode.
- Turn it on when you need extra runtime, such as during travel or when a charger is unavailable.
- Remember that Apple says it reduces or disables Mail fetch, Hey Siri, Background App Refresh and some visual effects.
Low Power Mode turns off automatically after the iPhone charges above 80 percent. It is a practical temporary mode, not a way to identify which app caused the drain.
How do I turn off Apple Intelligence features without disabling useful iPhone functions?
Review the individual Apple Intelligence and Siri features available on your device rather than looking for one master “AI” process. Apple’s current feature set includes writing tools, summaries, live translation, natural-language photo search, Image Playground, Genmoji, notification summaries and models used by Shortcuts. Which controls appear depends on the iPhone model, operating-system version, language and region.
Audit the features you actually use
- Open Settings and search for Apple Intelligence or Siri; the exact menu and switches vary by supported device and software version.
- Disable notification summaries if they add processing or alter the timing of alerts you need to see immediately.
- Turn off writing tools, image-generation tools or Genmoji only if you do not use them; leaving an unused feature available does not necessarily mean it is continuously running.
- Review Shortcuts that invoke a model. A shortcut that runs from an automation, focus mode or location trigger can perform work without an obvious app launch.
- Check Photos and translation settings if those features are processing a large library or downloading language resources.
Apple documents storage requirements rather than a battery-drain percentage: Apple Intelligence can use up to 14 GB on certain newer devices and up to 8 GB on other supported devices. Storage occupied by models is not the same thing as power consumed in the background, so use Battery to verify whether a feature is affecting runtime.
Which Android controls reduce background activity and AI processing?
Start with the app shown in Battery usage, then use Battery Saver, Adaptive Battery and per-app restrictions. Android’s menus differ by manufacturer, so the wording below describes the control rather than promising an identical path on every phone.

Turn on Battery Saver when you need a broad reduction
- Open Settings > Battery > Battery Saver.
- Turn it on manually, or schedule it at a battery percentage if your phone offers scheduling.
- Read the on-screen warning before confirming. Google says Battery Saver limits or turns off background activity, turns on Dark theme and may delay visual effects, certain features, network connections and apps.
Battery Saver can postpone mail, messaging synchronization, uploads and other network work. Use it as a deliberate low-battery mode, not as a permanent substitute for fixing one misbehaving app.

- Open Settings > Battery and look for Adaptive Battery, Battery optimization or a similarly named option.
- Enable Adaptive Battery where available.
- From the battery-usage list, open a high-use app and choose the most restrictive setting that still permits the function you need. A phone may call these Restricted, Optimized or Unrestricted.
- Watch the app for a day. If messages, uploads or reminders arrive late, restore a less restrictive setting for that app.
Restricting an assistant, camera, gallery or AI-photo app can reduce background work, but it can also stop timely sync or processing. Test one app at a time so you can identify the trade-off.
Disable connections only when they are unnecessary
- Turn off Location access when you do not need navigation, geofencing, weather, emergency or device-finding functions.
- Turn off Bluetooth when no accessory or tracker needs it.
- Disable mobile data for an app where the phone permits per-app data controls, especially for apps that do not need to sync away from Wi-Fi.
- Use Airplane mode in situations where you need no connectivity. Apps that depend on a connection, location or calls will not work normally.
These changes affect the underlying radio connections, not just AI. A connection setting can save power, but it can also prevent an important service from reaching you.
Remove an AI app you no longer use
If an assistant, image generator or chatbot remains high in Battery usage and you do not need it, uninstall it instead of repeatedly restricting it. Google’s Android Help documents this route: open Play Store > profile icon > Manage apps & devices > Manage, select the app and choose uninstall. The exact confirmation wording can differ by Android version.
For a preinstalled app that cannot be uninstalled, the phone may offer Disable or Uninstall updates. Do not disable a system component unless you understand which other functions depend on it.

What is the difference between iPhone and Android background controls?
Both platforms let you measure battery use and reduce background work, but iPhone exposes a more consistent set of per-app switches while Android exposes more manufacturer-specific battery policies.

How should I change settings without breaking messages, navigation or reminders?
Use a controlled sequence instead of switching everything off at once. This preserves a way to identify the setting that helped and makes recovery straightforward.
- Record a baseline. Note the top battery users, the time period shown and any unusual activity such as travel, streaming or photo backup.
- Choose one target. Start with the app marked for background activity or the permission category that matches the symptom.
- Apply the narrowest change. Disable that app’s refresh, reduce its location permission, silence its nonessential notifications or restrict its battery use.
- Use a broad mode only when appropriate. Turn on Low Power Mode or Battery Saver when you need immediate savings across the phone.
- Use the phone normally. Test messages, calls, navigation, reminders, photo uploads and any other function that matters to you.
- Recheck Battery. Compare the next normal-use period with the baseline. If the target did not change, restore it and investigate the next highest user.
This method also distinguishes a genuine background problem from poor cellular coverage. A phone working hard to maintain a weak signal may continue to drain even after an AI feature is disabled.

If the same app remains high in the list
- Update the app and the phone’s operating system through the normal update screens.
- Open the app’s own settings and turn off automatic downloads, continuous sync, assistant listening or analysis options that you do not need.
- Review its location, notification, camera, microphone, nearby-device and data permissions.
- Sign out or uninstall the app if it is optional and continues to consume power while unused.
If system activity is high instead
- Check for weak cellular coverage, a long hotspot session, a large photo-library operation or a recent operating-system update completing background tasks.
- Allow the phone to finish a one-time indexing or synchronization operation before judging its normal behavior.
- Restart the phone, then monitor a complete day. A restart is a diagnostic step, not a replacement for identifying the process.
If important functions stop working
- Restore the last restriction you changed rather than disabling every battery control.
- For delayed messages or mail, allow the app to run in the background or permit its notifications.
- For navigation, emergency, weather or device-finding problems, restore the necessary location permission.
- For delayed photo uploads, allow background data or refresh while charging and on a trusted network.
Is it safe to leave Low Power Mode or Battery Saver on all the time?
It is generally safe to use either mode, but constant use may make the phone feel less immediate because background work, visual effects, network activity and selected features can be delayed. On iPhone, Low Power Mode automatically turns off after charging above 80 percent. On Android, Battery Saver behavior depends on the manufacturer and selected schedule. If you need a particular alert, upload or navigation update on time, configure that app specifically instead of relying only on a global mode.

What settings provide the best balance between battery life and privacy?
Battery controls and privacy controls overlap but are not identical. Removing location, microphone or notification access can reduce activity and exposure, yet it may also remove a function you depend on. A practical balance is to grant access only while using an app where possible, keep background location for services that genuinely need it, disable alerts that reveal information on the lock screen and uninstall AI apps you do not use. Verify the result in Battery rather than assuming a permission change saved power.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will turning off Background App Refresh stop push notifications on an iPhone?
Not necessarily. Push notifications are delivered through the system notification service, while Background App Refresh controls when an app can update content in the background. An app can still show a push alert, but opening it may be required to fetch the newest content.
Can an AI feature use battery even when its app is not near the top of the battery list?
Yes. Model work may be grouped under a system category, a keyboard, Photos, Shortcuts or another host app. Check App and System Activity Usage on iPhone and inspect related apps on Android before concluding that a named assistant is idle.
Does deleting an AI app remove downloaded models from my phone?
Usually the app and its private data are removed together, but operating-system components or shared language resources may remain. Check available storage after uninstalling; storage usage and battery activity are separate measurements.

The cellular radio may work harder to maintain or reacquire a connection, and apps may retry network requests. Compare battery use in a location with reliable service or while using Wi-Fi before blaming an AI feature.
