Start by checking the Recycle Bin or Trash, backups, file-version history, and any cloud service’s deleted-items folder. If the file is not there, recovery depends on your operating system, whether it was stored locally or in the cloud, and how much the affected storage has been used since deletion. Stop writing to the affected drive as much as practical, and save any recovered files to a different drive.
What to do first
- Stop using the affected storage as much as practical. Avoid downloading or installing recovery software on that drive, creating partitions, or saving other files to it. Microsoft advises minimizing or avoiding computer use to improve the chance of recovery, and recommends using a USB or external hard drive as the destination if the computer has only one drive. See Microsoft’s Windows File Recovery guidance.
- Check the Recycle Bin or Trash. If the file is still there, restore it from the bin rather than attempting a deeper scan.
- Check backups and version history. A previous folder version or backup may contain the file even if it is no longer in the bin.
- Check the cloud service’s deleted-items folder. If the file was synced, its cloud copy and recovery options may be separate from what happened to the local copy.
- If no copy exists, choose a recovery route for the operating system and storage location. Windows File Recovery, for example, is intended for local storage, not cloud storage or network file shares.
A duplicate-file finder does not necessarily have a special undo option. Whether one exists depends on the specific app and whether it documents a history or quarantine feature; no app was specified here, so do not assume that such a feature is available.

Windows File History
If File History was enabled, Microsoft documents browsing saved file and folder versions and restoring an earlier version. Look for a version of the folder from before the accidental deletion; it may include the missing file. Follow Microsoft’s File History instructions.
OneDrive
If the file was in OneDrive, check the OneDrive recycle bin. Microsoft also documents restoring an entire OneDrive for eligible Microsoft 365 subscribers within 30 days. That 30-day period is the service’s stated restore window, not a guarantee that any particular file can be recovered. See Microsoft’s OneDrive restore instructions.

Time Machine on Mac
If you used Time Machine, open the Finder folder where the file belonged, enter Time Machine, browse backup dates, select the item, and restore it. Apple says restored items return to their original location. In supported apps, Apple also documents browsing earlier versions through File > Revert To > Browse All Versions. See Apple’s Time Machine restore instructions.

Windows: try Windows File Recovery for local storage
Microsoft’s Windows File Recovery is a command-line tool for attempting to recover files from local internal or external drives and USB storage. It does not recover files from cloud storage or network file shares. It is not a graphical consumer app, and the appropriate method depends on factors such as the filesystem and recovery mode. Use Microsoft’s current Windows File Recovery page for current availability and instructions rather than relying on a command that may not fit your drive or Windows version. Save recovered output to a different drive, not the one you are trying to recover.

Mac: prioritize Trash and backups
After checking Trash, use Time Machine if you have a backup that predates the deletion. No Apple-specific deleted-file scanning tool or general guarantee for recovering permanently deleted files from a Mac is established here, so avoid assuming that a particular filesystem or storage feature makes recovery either certain or impossible.

Cloud or network locations: use the service’s own recovery options
For a cloud-synced file, check that service’s deleted-items bin and version or restore features. Local deletion behavior is not necessarily the same across sync services. The OneDrive options above are specific to OneDrive; they should not be treated as instructions for other providers.

Deleting a file generally marks the storage space it used as available; the old data may remain until new data overwrites it. Later writes can overwrite that space, making recovery fail. Microsoft specifically warns that recovery can fail when free space has been overwritten, and identifies SSDs as a particular concern. This is a risk, not a claim that every deletion from an SSD is unrecoverable. No reliable recovery percentage is established for this situation.

If the missing file is important and basic restoration options do not work, stop DIY attempts and seek qualified data-recovery advice. No recovery method can guarantee success.
