Xbox Game Bar can record an open game or supported app in Windows 11 without installing another recorder. The quickest method is to focus the game or app and press Windows + Alt + R.
There is an important limitation: Xbox Game Bar is not a reliable full-desktop recorder. It may reject the Windows desktop, File Explorer, and some other windows. For a desktop tutorial or a selected area of the screen, use Windows 11’s Snipping Tool instead.
Enable Xbox Game Bar
Xbox Game Bar is normally included with Windows 11, but its recording feature must be enabled before you use it.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Click the Find a setting box and type
xbox. - Select Enable Xbox Game Bar.
- Turn on the option for enabling Xbox Game Bar for recording game clips, chatting, and receiving game invites.
To check that it is available, press Windows + G. The Game Bar overlay should appear over the active game or app.

Record a game or app with the keyboard shortcut
Use this method when you want to start recording quickly:
- Open the game or app you want to record.
- Click inside its window so it has focus. Do not leave the Windows desktop or File Explorer selected.
- Press Windows + Alt + R.
- Continue using the game or app. Windows displays a small recording indicator while capture is active.
- Press Windows + Alt + R again to stop.
The first time you record a particular app, Windows may ask whether the current application should be treated as a game. Confirm the prompt if it appears.
Start recording from the Game Bar controls
- Open the target game or app and click inside it.
- Press Windows + G.
- In the Capture widget, select the record button.
- When finished, open the overlay again if necessary and select the stop button.
Windows + G opens the overlay; it does not directly start recording. The direct recording shortcut is Windows + Alt + R.

Record microphone narration
To toggle the microphone during recording, press:
Windows key + Alt + MThis shortcut only toggles the microphone. Windows must also detect the microphone, and microphone access must be allowed in privacy settings. If narration is missing, check Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone and make sure microphone access is enabled for the relevant apps.
Capture game, app, and system audio
Game Bar can capture more than the game’s sound. To configure the recording audio:
- Press Windows + G.
- Select Settings in the Game Bar overlay.
- Open Capturing.
- Under the audio-capture options, select All.
The All setting includes game audio, enabled microphone audio, app audio, and system audio. If you want only computer playback and no narration, leave audio capture set to All and turn off the microphone with Windows + Alt + M.

Find your saved recordings
Xbox Game Bar saves recordings as MP4 files in:
%USERPROFILE%VideosCapturesIn File Explorer, open:
Videos > CapturesThe filename contains the game or app name and the recording date and time. If the Captures folder does not exist, make a short test recording first. Windows normally creates the folder when a clip is saved.
On systems that expose capture-location controls, you can manage the location from Settings > Gaming > Captures.
Take a screenshot with Xbox Game Bar
With the game or app focused, press:
Windows key + Alt + Print ScreenGame Bar saves the screenshot as a PNG file in the same VideosCaptures folder.
What Xbox Game Bar cannot reliably record
Xbox Game Bar is designed to capture the active game or app. It is not a general-purpose recorder for everything visible on the monitor.

If the desktop or File Explorer has focus, Game Bar may display a message saying that gaming features are unavailable for that surface. This is expected behavior rather than proof that the shortcut is broken.

For a Windows tutorial, software demonstration, or selected screen area, Snipping Tool is usually a better built-in choice. Its recording feature lets you select the region before recording.

- Select New.
- Drag around the desktop area or window you want to record.
- Start and stop the recording using the on-screen controls.
Microsoft deprecated Steps Recorder beginning with the Windows 11 update released in February 2024 and points users toward Snipping Tool, Xbox Game Bar, or Clipchamp instead.
Fix Xbox Game Bar recording problems
“Gaming features aren’t available for the Windows desktop or File Explorer”
Click inside the game or app you intend to capture, then press Windows + Alt + R. If you actually need the desktop or File Explorer, switch to Snipping Tool or another full-desktop recorder.
The recording shortcut does nothing
- Go to Settings and search for
xbox. - Confirm that Xbox Game Bar is enabled.
- Open the target app and click inside it.
- Try Windows + G to see whether the overlay appears.
- Try the recording shortcut again.
Some games prevent the overlay from appearing in particular full-screen modes. If the shortcut still has no visible effect, try borderless-windowed or windowed mode.
Game Bar does not appear in a full-screen Vulkan or OpenGL game
Microsoft documents a limitation affecting many Vulkan and OpenGL games in full-screen mode. Some rendering modes bypass the Windows Desktop Window Manager, preventing the overlay from appearing. Change the game’s display mode to Windowed or Borderless Windowed, then try Game Bar again.
The saved video has no sound
- Press Windows + G.
- Open Settings > Capturing.
- Set audio capture to All.
- If you need narration, make sure the microphone is not muted with Windows + Alt + M.
- Check Windows microphone permissions and confirm that the correct input device is selected.
Game Bar freezes, crashes, or cannot load the capture gallery
A large number of files, corrupted clips, or an invalid capture-folder path can make the Game Bar gallery unstable. Open %USERPROFILE%VideosCaptures and move existing recordings to another folder temporarily. Then open Game Bar and test it with a short clip.
Repair or reset Xbox Game Bar
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Xbox Game Bar.
- Click its three-dot More button.
- Select Advanced options.
- Click Repair.
- Test recording again. If it still fails, return to the same page and select Reset.
Windows does not expose these options for every app, so the repair and reset buttons may not be available on every installation.
