The safest way to spot an AI-driven scam is not to hunt for one telltale glitch. Pause, verify the person and request through a channel you already trust, and protect your accounts before sending money, credentials, codes, or files. Generative AI can produce convincing text, images, cloned voices, documents, and video, so polished spelling or a familiar face is no longer proof of identity. Treat urgency, secrecy, a sudden move to a private app, a new payment destination, or a request for an MFA code as a reason to stop and check independently.
What makes AI-driven scams different from ordinary scams?
AI gives criminals speed, scale, and convincing impersonation. The FBI says generative tools can correct grammar, translate messages, create realistic profile pictures and documents, clone a relative’s voice, and produce video or live chats that appear to show an executive, official, friend, or romantic contact. That makes familiar fraud patterns easier to run against more people at once.
AI does not create a completely new category of fraud; it strengthens phishing, romance and confidence scams, investment schemes, extortion, business-email compromise, fake profiles, and impersonation. The FBI’s December 3, 2024 warning said criminals were exploiting generative AI “on a larger scale” while increasing the believability of their schemes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe 2025 FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) Annual Report recorded 22,364 AI-related complaints and $893,346,472 in adjusted losses. The same report attributed more than $30 million to AI-linked business-email-compromise losses, more than $19 million to confidence and romance scams, and more than $5 million to distress scams. Those figures are reported complaints and adjusted losses, not an estimate of every scam that used AI.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
AI-generated content can be difficult to authenticate, and official guidance provides no universal detector for every image, voice, or video. Behavioral verification therefore matters more than visual inspection alone.
What is the fastest reliable check when a message or call feels wrong?
Use a pause-and-verify routine: stop the transaction, identify what is being requested, and contact the supposed sender through a route you found independently. Never let the suspicious contact supply the phone number, link, QR code, or “support” account you use to check them.
- Pause. Do not reply, click, download, scan, transfer money, or reveal a password or one-time code while you assess the request.
- Name the request. Is it asking for money, credentials, an MFA code, a device-linking action, secrecy, or a new app?
- Check the channel. Compare the full email address, phone number, profile handle, domain, and destination URL with a known record.
- Use an out-of-band contact. Hang up and call a trusted number already in your contacts, use a previously confirmed email address, or speak to the person in a normal setting.
- Confirm the details. Ask whether the person actually sent the message and whether the payment account, beneficiary, or download is legitimate.
- Escalate safely. If you cannot verify the request, decline it and report the account or message through the platform, financial institution, employer, or relevant authority.
A familiar voice, a known logo, a screenshot, or a live video should support—not replace—this independent check.

Inspect the sender and the requested action before judging the writing style. AI can make a fraudulent message grammatically perfect, so the strongest clues are mismatched identity details, an unusual context, and pressure to act through a new route.
Check identity details
- Read the complete sender address, not only the display name. Look for swapped letters, added words, unfamiliar domains, or a reply address that differs from the visible sender.
- Compare the phone number, account handle, signature, and normal vocabulary with earlier conversations. A new number or newly created profile deserves a separate check.
- Hover over links on a computer or long-press them on a phone to inspect the destination without opening it. A look-alike domain or unrelated redirect is a warning.
Check the request and context
- Be cautious when a message asks you to move from a public platform or normal work email to Signal, Telegram, WhatsApp, or a private address before verification.
- Do not click an attachment, download an app, or scan a device-linking QR code simply because the message appears professional. CISA has documented messaging-app compromise campaigns involving phishing, malicious QR codes, impersonation, and spyware.
- Urgent demands for gift cards, cryptocurrency, wires, password resets, one-time codes, or immediate transfers are high-risk, especially when paired with secrecy.
- Unusually polished prose, emotional overstatement, or a sudden change in tone can be clues, but none proves AI use. Human scammers can write well, and AI-generated text can look ordinary.
Open the organization’s official app or type its known web address yourself rather than using a link in the message. For a workplace request, confirm with the colleague using the company directory or an established phone extension.
Can a familiar voice be cloned, and how should I check a call?
Yes. The FBI warns that a cloned voice can sound nearly identical to a known contact. Treat the voice as an unverified claim until you reconnect through a number or channel you already trust.

Signals worth noticing
- Odd timing between your question and the answer, unnatural pauses, background noise that loops, or a flat or unusual emotional tone.
- Word choices, names, or details the person would not normally use.
- A request to keep the call secret, stay on the line, or avoid calling another family member or colleague.
These are clues, not authentication. A clean call may still be synthetic, and a genuine call may have poor audio. Hang up and dial the contact’s saved number, the number printed on a bank card, or a company number obtained from its official site. For a family emergency, agree in advance on a secret word or phrase that a genuine relative can provide without coaching.
Never disclose an MFA code to a caller. If you already gave one, treat the account as potentially compromised and begin the recovery steps in the incident section below.
What should I look for in AI-generated images, documents, and profiles?
Inspect the whole identity, not just the face. Inconsistent visual details can reveal manipulation, while a thin or recently created online presence can reveal a fabricated persona.
Examine the media
- Look for distorted hands or fingers, teeth, eyes, glasses, jewelry, shadows, skin color, reflections, and inconsistent image quality.
- Check whether lighting, perspective, and background objects agree across the image. Cropped or recompressed files can also create harmless artifacts, so use these observations only as prompts for verification.
- Assume screenshots, PDFs, identification documents, celebrity endorsements, and “proof” photos are claims. FinCEN has warned that deepfake media and fraudulent identity documents are used in financial-institution fraud.
Examine the account
- A profile with few longstanding interactions, generic comments, a recent creation date, or photos that do not match the stated name deserves extra scrutiny.
- Reverse-searching an image can reveal reuse, but a clean result does not establish that the person is genuine; generated images may be new.
- Ask for verification through a previously confirmed account or a normal voice call. Do not ask the suspicious account to “prove” itself by sending another image.
When money, employment, investment, or identity documents are involved, verify the organization and beneficiary independently before sharing anything.
Can a live video call still be fake?
Yes. Deepfake video, face replacement, and manipulated identity checks can operate during a live interaction. FinCEN and the FBI both describe fraud involving deepfake video and identity-verification abuse.
Watch for lip-sync that slips during fast speech, facial movement that does not match the head, lighting or shadows that change incorrectly, an edge around the face, and voice quality that does not match the room. A frozen frame, camera excuse, or repeated request to keep the call on one particular app can also be relevant context.

None of these observations is conclusive. End the call and verify the request with a known contact method. If the supposed executive asks you to change bank details, if a romantic contact requests a transfer, or if an official asks for credentials, follow the organization’s published process rather than the video caller’s instructions.
Why are urgency and channel changes such strong warning signs?
Scammers use urgency to prevent you from consulting someone who could notice the deception. A channel change removes familiar history and gives the criminal more control over what you can verify.
- Urgency: “Act in the next few minutes,” “keep this confidential,” or “the account will close today” leaves no safe time for checking.
- Channel switching: A contact who suddenly moves from SMS, a public network, or a company email to an encrypted or private app may be trying to escape moderation and colleagues.
- Payment substitution: A new bank account, cryptocurrency wallet, gift-card request, or unusual payment intermediary should be confirmed using a known channel.
- Credential capture: Requests for passwords, recovery codes, MFA numbers, device-linking QR scans, or remote-control software indicate an attempt to take over an account or device.
One signal alone can have an innocent explanation. Several together—especially a new identity, a private channel, urgency, and money—justify stopping the interaction.

How do I verify someone without tipping off a scammer?
Verify the underlying fact, not the performance. A scammer can answer personal questions gathered from social media, so use a route and a detail they cannot control.
- Choose a trusted route. Call a saved number, use an existing workplace directory entry, visit a branch in person, or start a new conversation from the official app.
- Do not reuse the suspicious link. Type the address yourself or use a bookmark you created earlier.
- Ask a private, prearranged question. Family members can use a secret phrase; organizations can use an internal callback procedure. Do not invent a code during the suspicious call and then reveal it to the caller.
- Confirm the destination. Verify the account name and number for a payment, the exact domain for a login, and the app publisher before installing.
- Get a second person involved. A colleague, family member, bank fraud team, or platform support agent can provide a fresh review.
- Record the outcome. Keep the verified contact details and procedure for future emergencies.
If the person objects to an independent callback, insists on secrecy, or tries to keep you from consulting someone, end the interaction.

- Enable multifactor authentication on every account that supports it. A physical FIDO2 security key provides a hardware-based option for compatible services.
- Never provide an MFA code to anyone by text, email, or phone. Legitimate support staff should not need the code read aloud.
- Use unique passwords with a password manager, and change a password immediately if it was entered on a suspicious page.
- Keep social profiles, follower lists, old posts, and public voice or video samples limited where practical. Public material can help create fraudulent identities.
- Install operating-system and app updates, use device screen locks, and review active sessions and connected devices.
- Avoid unverified downloads, attachments, browser extensions, and device-linking QR codes. If you installed something suspicious, disconnect the device from sensitive accounts and seek trusted technical help.
- Set transaction alerts and account-recovery notifications so an unexpected change is visible quickly.
Privacy settings do not prevent every scam, but they reduce the amount of material available for cloning and impersonation.
Which verification method should I use?
The best choice depends on the risk and the friction a legitimate person can tolerate. Use more than one control for high-value transactions.
| Method | Identity-verification strength | Channel coverage | Friction | Privacy impact | Cost information |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Independent callback to a saved or independently found number | High when the number was confirmed before the incident | Phone, email, messaging, and in-person requests | Moderate; pauses the transaction | Low; uses existing contact data | Not stated in official guidance |
| Family secret word or phrase | High for prearranged family emergencies | Voice calls and urgent personal requests | Low after setup | Low | Not stated in official guidance |
| FIDO2 hardware security key | Strong account sign-in protection against many phishing attempts | Compatible websites and apps, not identity proof for a caller | Low to moderate; requires the key | Low compared with services that collect identity data | Purchase cost varies; no single price is established here |
| Authenticator-app MFA | Stronger than a password alone, but codes can still be phished | Accounts that support app-based MFA | Low | Usually limited account data, depending on the provider | Not stated in official guidance |
| Privacy controls and limited public media | Prevention support rather than identity verification | Social and public-profile exposure | Low after setup | Reduces public data available for impersonation | Usually a built-in account setting; specific costs not stated |
Identity-monitoring and device-security products differ by program, region, and feature set; evaluate their actual alerts, recovery assistance, data collection, and cancellation terms rather than assuming any product can authenticate synthetic media.

Act quickly, preserve evidence, and stop the criminal’s access. Do not send more money to someone who promises to recover funds.
- Stop communicating. Do not negotiate or warn the scammer that you are reporting them.
- Preserve evidence. Save messages, headers, phone numbers, profile URLs, payment instructions, wallet addresses, QR codes, attachments, screenshots, and the dates and times of contact. Do not edit the originals.
- Secure accounts. Change exposed passwords from a clean device, revoke active sessions, remove unknown recovery methods, and reset MFA if necessary. Contact the real provider through its official recovery process.
- Contact the financial institution promptly. Ask whether a transfer, card payment, wire, or cryptocurrency transaction can be stopped or recalled. Timing and available remedies vary by payment method.
- Contain a compromised device. Disconnect it from sensitive networks if malware is suspected, preserve relevant logs where possible, and obtain qualified technical assistance before wiping evidence.
- Report the incident. Use the platform’s reporting tool and the appropriate law-enforcement or national fraud-reporting channel. Businesses should also follow their internal security and breach procedures.
- Warn likely targets. If your account or identity was impersonated, tell contacts through a trusted channel so they do not trust follow-up messages.
Reporting may not recover money, but it can help providers connect accounts, payment destinations, and reused media.

No single detector can authenticate every generated image, voice, text, or video. Use forensic clues and detection services, when available, as one input in a broader decision. Do not upload sensitive identity documents, private family videos, or confidential business files to an unknown analyzer merely to obtain a confidence score.
What are the limits of visual and behavioral clues?
Artifacts change as files are resized, recompressed, translated, or passed through a video platform. Genuine people can have unusual lighting, accents, delays, or new phone numbers; legitimate organizations can send polished automated messages. Conversely, a sophisticated scam can avoid obvious errors.
That is why the decisive question is not “Can I prove this is AI?” but “Can I verify this request independently before I act?” If the answer is no, delay or decline the transaction.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if the caller knows my name, address, or family details?
Treat those details as potentially public or stolen, not as proof of identity. Ask the caller to end the conversation while you contact the person or organization through a number you already trust; do not answer additional security questions on the suspicious call.
Should I install a deepfake detector app to check a video?
Not as your primary safeguard. Detector accuracy varies, and uploading private media can create a separate privacy risk; verify the request through an independent channel instead.
What happens if I accidentally shared an MFA code?
Use the account provider’s official recovery page immediately, change the password from a clean device, revoke active sessions, and remove unfamiliar recovery methods. Tell the provider that the code was disclosed so it can review recent sign-ins and lock or restore the account.
How long should I keep scam evidence?
Keep original messages, files, payment records, and a timeline until your bank, platform, employer, or investigators say they are no longer needed. Store copies in a location the suspected attacker cannot alter.

Can a scammer use my public voice clips to impersonate me?
Public audio and video can provide material for a cloned identity. Limit older public recordings where practical, tell close contacts how you will verify emergencies, and monitor for new profiles or messages using your name.
