To read Big Tech earnings reports well, look beyond headline cloud growth and AI claims: match each number to its reporting period and definition, then check whether it comes with operating profit and cash generation. Capital spending is cash committed to assets that may take months or years to enter service; an annualized AI revenue run rate is not the same as revenue recognized in a quarter. Those distinctions explain why a company can report fast-growing cloud sales, rising AI investment, and falling free cash flow at the same time.

The examples below come from Microsoft’s FY2026 annual report, Amazon’s Q2 2026 release, and Alphabet’s and Meta Platforms’ 2025 filings. These are different reporting periods and kinds of disclosures, not a simultaneous comparison of four companies. Treat each figure as an illustration of how to read a report, and check a company’s latest filing before relying on it as a current result.

What should you check first in an earnings report?

Before comparing growth rates or spending, identify the reporting period, metric definition, and financial statement where the number appears. A percentage without those details can make unlike measures look comparable.

Match the period

Companies may report by calendar quarter, fiscal quarter, or full fiscal year. Write down the period and comparison basis attached to each figure: for example, year-over-year growth in a quarter is not the same measurement window as growth across a fiscal year. A trailing-twelve-month cash-flow figure covers yet another period. Management forecasts describe a future period and should not be presented as results already achieved.

Match the scope

“Cloud” can mean a named service, a reporting segment, or a company-defined bundle of products. Microsoft Cloud is a composite that includes Microsoft 365 Commercial cloud, Azure and other cloud services, the commercial portion of LinkedIn, and Dynamics 365. Azure and other cloud services growth, by contrast, refers to a narrower product-family measure. Amazon reports AWS as a segment. These labels are not interchangeable.

Locate the number in the report

An earnings release often highlights selected results and management commentary. The income statement, cash flow statement, segment disclosures, and notes provide different evidence: sales show recognized revenue for a period; operating income and margins help show segment economics; cash-flow statements show cash movement; and notes can explain asset purchases, commitments, and accounting treatment. Record both the number and what kind of number it is.

Is cloud growth paying off?

Growth is evidence of demand, but it does not by itself establish that a cloud business is becoming more profitable or generating enough cash to justify new investment. Pair each growth measure with segment operating income, gross margin information, and cash flow, while keeping their definitions and periods aligned.

Compare growth with earnings

Microsoft’s FY2026 annual report says Microsoft Cloud revenue reached $214.4 billion and Azure and other cloud services revenue grew 41%. Those figures describe a full fiscal year and distinct measures: one is revenue for Microsoft’s broader cloud composite, and the other is growth in Azure and other cloud services.

The same report says Intelligent Cloud segment revenue increased 30% in FY2026 and operating income increased 28%. These segment results add a profitability lens, but they should not be mistaken for a margin calculation on the narrower Azure growth figure. Microsoft also attributed lower Microsoft Cloud gross margin percentage partly to continued AI infrastructure investment and growing AI product usage. That is the company’s explanation, not independent proof of how much either factor caused the change.

Amazon’s July 2026 Q2 release reports AWS sales of $42.2 billion and segment operating income of $16.6 billion. Reading the two together gives more context than sales growth alone. Segment earnings still depend on the company’s accounting and cost allocation; they are not a direct measure of the profit from a specific cloud product or AI service.

Do not rank mismatched growth rates

Amazon reported AWS sales growth of 37% year over year in Q2 2026. CEO Andy Jassy described growth as 36.7% year over year in the same release, calling it AWS’s fastest growth in 18 quarters. The rounded rate and the more precise management statement refer to that quarterly comparison. They are not directly comparable to Microsoft’s FY2026 Azure and other cloud services growth rate of 41%, which uses a different period and a different measure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A useful comparison therefore starts with questions, not a leaderboard: Is the figure a quarterly segment growth rate or an annual product-family growth rate? Does it describe revenue, bookings, usage, or a company-defined aggregate? Is operating income moving in the same direction, and are margins under pressure? If those measures do not line up, report them separately rather than ranking them.

How much are tech companies spending on AI?

Use the company’s stated capital-expenditure measure, period, and definition, then distinguish actual spending from a forecast. Capex is cash investment in assets; it is not the same as operating expenses, depreciation, or total investing cash flow.

Separate asset purchases from other cash uses

On the cash flow statement, find purchases of property and equipment rather than treating all investing cash flow as capex. Investing cash flow can include acquisitions, securities, and other investments. Then review the property-and-equipment notes for asset categories, construction-in-progress, and lease commitments where disclosed. This helps establish what the spending is funding and what obligations may extend beyond the reporting period.

Alphabet reported $91.4 billion of capital expenditure in 2025, mainly for technical infrastructure such as servers, network equipment, data-center land, and buildings. Meta Platforms’ 2025 Form 10-K reports $69.69 billion of purchases of property and equipment, mainly for servers, data centers, and network infrastructure. Those are useful company-specific disclosures, but the labels and definitions should be checked before comparing them as if they were calculated identically.

Keep forecasts separate from results

Meta’s 2025 Form 10-K forecast approximately $115 billion to $135 billion of capex in 2026 to support AI efforts and its core business. That range is management’s outlook in that filing, not actual 2026 spending. A forecast can change as demand, supply, power availability, construction schedules, or company priorities change; check the period and date whenever discussing it.

Do not infer that all reported infrastructure investment is exclusively for AI. The Meta filing describes spending as supporting AI efforts and the core business. Alphabet’s cited 2025 spending description identifies technical infrastructure. Those descriptions establish the stated scope, not a precise dollar allocation to AI alone.

Why can capital spending reduce cash flow before it affects profit?

Purchasing or building a long-lived asset uses cash when the company pays for it, while depreciation expense generally begins later, once the asset is ready for its intended use. The gap between investment and service can therefore weigh on cash flow before the full expense appears in operating results or the asset begins supporting revenue.

Follow the asset from purchase to service

Data-center capacity is not necessarily usable as soon as land is acquired or equipment is ordered. Alphabet says projects can take months or years to move from purchase and construction to service, and that depreciation begins when property and equipment is ready for its intended use. That timing means a current period can include substantial cash outlays for capacity that has not yet begun generating service revenue or depreciation expense.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Once assets are in service, depreciation can affect reported operating costs over time. The precise effect depends on the asset, accounting policies, and useful life; a large cash purchase should not be treated as an equal-sized expense in the same quarter. Conversely, a later increase in depreciation may reflect earlier investment entering service rather than a new cash outlay of the same amount in that period.

Read free cash flow alongside capex

Free cash flow is a useful view of cash remaining after operating cash flow and capital investment under the company’s stated calculation, but check the definition used in the release. Amazon reported a trailing-twelve-month free cash flow outflow of $7.6 billion as of Q2 2026. It said the result was driven primarily by a year-over-year increase of $66.1 billion in net purchases of property and equipment, which it said primarily reflected AI investment. This is a trailing-twelve-month result and an attributed explanation, not a measure of one quarter’s AI revenue or a universal forecast for future cash flow.

When cash flow falls while earnings rise, compare the relevant periods and line items rather than assuming the statements conflict. Earnings include expenses recognized under accounting rules; cash flow records cash receipts and payments. Large equipment purchases can therefore create a cash burden before depreciation and potential revenue arrive. Working-capital changes and other cash items may also affect the gap, so inspect the company’s reconciliation and cash-flow statement instead of assigning every movement to capex.

Are AI products actually generating revenue?

Separate revenue recognized in a reported period from annualized run rates, usage metrics, customer counts, commitments, and management expectations. These measures can signal commercial traction, but they are different kinds of evidence and should never be described as equivalent revenue.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a disclosure hierarchy

  1. Recognized revenue for a reported period: revenue recorded in a stated quarter or year is the clearest period-based sales evidence, although it may not isolate AI unless the company reports it separately.
  2. A separately disclosed business revenue figure: check its definition, reporting period, and whether it represents a standalone business or a broader category.
  3. An annualized run rate: a pace extrapolated from business activity is not the same as revenue earned during the quarter or year.
  4. Usage, customer counts, backlog, or commitments: these can indicate adoption or potential future business, but do not establish recognized sales or profit by themselves.
  5. Management expectations: plans and forecasts describe what the company expects, not what it has already earned.

Read run-rate language literally

Amazon’s July 30, 2026 release says AWS’s AI business exceeded a $25 billion annual revenue run rate and was growing at triple-digit percentages year over year. Jassy also said AWS’s AI and Chips businesses each eclipsed run rates of more than $25 billion. This is management’s annualized run-rate disclosure. It does not mean AWS recognized more than $25 billion of AI revenue in Q2, and the release’s AWS segment sales and operating income are not an isolated AI revenue figure.

Microsoft’s FY2026 report offers a different kind of evidence: it discusses cloud growth, infrastructure investment, and growing AI product usage, and attributes some cloud gross-margin pressure partly to those investments and usage. The cited report does not provide a comparable standalone AI revenue total. Usage and infrastructure demand can matter to an investor’s assessment, but they do not establish incremental AI revenue or return on capital on their own.

Treat contracted work as a separate indicator

Microsoft reported $678 billion of commercial remaining performance obligation in FY2026. This is a contracted-performance indicator, not current-period recognized revenue. Its size may provide context about contracted business, but it should not be added to reported sales or described as cash already collected; the measure answers a different question from quarterly revenue.

Why can net income rise while cash generation weakens?

Net income and cash flow answer different questions, and net income can include items outside ordinary operating performance. Compare net income with operating income and cash generation, then identify material non-operating items before drawing conclusions about business momentum.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Amazon’s Q2 2026 release says net income included $53.4 billion of non-operating pre-tax other income, primarily from investments in Anthropic. That item should be distinguished from AWS segment operating income and from cash generated by the company’s operations. It is not evidence that cloud or AI services earned that amount in sales.

For a practical reading, ask whether operating income from the relevant business moved with revenue, whether cash from operations supported investment, and whether non-operating gains or losses materially affected net income. A favorable investment-related item can raise net income even when capital purchases reduce free cash flow. Neither number alone provides a complete account of operating performance.

How should you compare cloud, capex, and AI disclosures across companies?

Build a comparison around aligned definitions and economic questions instead of dividing one headline number by another. A capex-to-cloud-revenue ratio can be misleading when the periods, asset definitions, business scopes, or timing differ.

Company and disclosure Period and measure What it helps show
Microsoft FY2026 Microsoft Cloud revenue: $214.4 billion; Azure and other cloud services growth: 41% A broad cloud revenue total and a separate product-family growth rate
Microsoft FY2026 Intelligent Cloud revenue growth: 30%; operating income growth: 28% Segment growth alongside operating earnings movement
Microsoft FY2026 commercial remaining performance obligation: $678 billion A contracted-performance indicator, not recognized current-period revenue
Amazon Q2 2026 AWS sales: $42.2 billion; segment operating income: $16.6 billion Quarterly segment sales and operating earnings
Amazon Q2 2026 AWS sales growth: 37% year over year; CEO statement: 36.7% A quarterly growth rate, reported rounded and in management commentary
Amazon AI business annual revenue run rate above $25 billion, disclosed July 30, 2026 Management’s annualized run-rate claim, not Q2 recognized AI revenue
Alphabet 2025 capital expenditure: $91.4 billion Annual infrastructure investment, primarily technical infrastructure
Meta Platforms 2025 purchases of property and equipment: $69.69 billion Annual cash purchases mainly for servers, data centers, and network infrastructure
Meta Platforms 2026 capex forecast: approximately $115 billion to $135 billion, stated in its 2025 Form 10-K A forward-looking management outlook, not actual 2026 spending
Amazon Trailing-twelve-month free cash flow as of Q2 2026: negative $7.6 billion Cash generation after investment over a trailing period

This table is a set of reading examples, not a synchronized performance ranking. Microsoft’s annual fiscal-year figures, Amazon’s quarterly and trailing-twelve-month figures, and Alphabet’s and Meta’s 2025 annual disclosures cover different windows. Even where two figures are both called capex or cloud growth, confirm the company’s definition before comparing them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a short decision checklist

  • Period: Is each figure quarterly, annual, trailing-twelve-month, or a forecast?
  • Scope: Is the cloud figure a segment, a product family, or a company-defined aggregate?
  • Monetization: Is the AI claim recognized revenue, a run rate, usage, a commitment, or an expectation?
  • Profitability: Does the relevant segment disclose operating income or margin, and what cost pressures does management identify?
  • Cash burden: Are you looking at property-and-equipment purchases or total investing cash flow, and how does free cash flow compare?
  • Asset timing: Is the capacity under construction, committed through leases, deployed, or ready for use?
  • Outlook risk: When was the forecast made, which period does it cover, and could delivery constraints or changing demand alter it?

Only after those checks should you form a view about whether growth is economically productive. Evidence is strongest when recognized sales, segment profitability, and cash generation can be connected to the same business and period. Where a company does not disclose standalone AI revenue or a directly comparable margin, say so rather than treating a run rate or company-wide result as a substitute.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I find capex in a company’s earnings report?

Start with the cash flow statement for purchases of property and equipment, then check the notes for what those purchases include. An earnings release may also state management’s capex outlook, but a forecast is not an amount already spent.

What does remaining performance obligation mean in an earnings report?

It is a contracted-performance indicator that can provide context about future work or sales obligations. It is not the same as revenue recognized in the current period or cash already received.

Can I calculate an AI company’s return on investment from its earnings release?

Usually not from a run-rate claim alone: a return calculation needs attributable revenue and costs as well as a defensible investment base. If the company does not separately disclose those inputs, its published figures cannot establish a standalone AI return.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why might a company’s reported net income include investment gains?

Net income can include non-operating items in addition to earnings from the company’s operating segments. Read the income statement details and management’s explanation to identify whether a large item came from investments rather than product sales.
