Use the App Store Connect API to retrieve reviews for an app, inspect individual review content, and create or manage a developer response. The workflow uses two different IDs: the app resource ID to list reviews and the customer review resource ID to read a review or manage its reply. A response may exist before it is published, so check its publication state before treating it as visible to customers.

What the API workflow does

Apple describes the App Store Connect API as “a REST API that enables the automation of actions you take in App Store Connect.” For reviews, the workflow links review retrieval with the Customer Review Responses resource: first find reviews for an app or version, then use an individual review’s resource ID to inspect it and manage its response.

This is an API workflow for monitoring and publishing replies, not a mechanism that automatically resolves a customer’s issue. Apple cautions that API changes affect production data, so treat write operations as production-facing.

Prepare API authorization

  1. Create an API key: Create an App Store Connect API key in your organization’s App Store Connect account. Apple’s App Store Connect API overview describes API authorization and key setup.
  2. Generate a JWT: Sign a JSON Web Token with the private key associated with that API key, then authorize API requests with the token.
  3. Protect the private key: Keep key material secure and limit access to the systems that need it. Confirm the intended operation and authorization before running automation against a live account.

Choose the reviews to retrieve

The app-wide list route is GET https://api.appstoreconnect.apple.com/v1/apps/{id}/customerReviews. Replace {id} with the app resource ID—not a customer review ID. Apple says to obtain the app resource ID from the List Apps response.

All reviews for an app Monitoring overall feedback across the app’s reviews. GET /v1/apps/{id}/customerReviews
Reviews for a particular app version Investigating feedback associated with a specific release. Apple documents version-specific review listing; see Customer Reviews.

For app-wide retrieval, the list endpoint supports filters for rating, territory, review territory, and whether a published response is present. You can sort by one attribute at a time, including rating or creation date, in ascending or descending order. Consult Apple’s list-reviews endpoint reference for the current filter and sort parameter names.

Fetch every page of reviews

The list endpoint’s documented maximum limit is 200 records per page. Results include pagination links; follow the returned next link until there is no next page. Do not treat the first response as the complete review set unless you have confirmed there are no further pages.

Use filters to focus the queue—for example, ratings for sentiment triage or the published-response filter to find reviews without a published reply. The latter is specifically about publication status, not merely whether a response object exists.

Read an individual review

Use the customer review resource ID returned in review data to retrieve an individual review: GET /v1/customerReviews/{id}. This ID is distinct from the app ID in the list route. The individual-review endpoint returns review information, including content. Apple documents HTTP responses including 200, 400, 401, 403, 404, and 429 for this endpoint; see Read Customer Review Information.

Get, create, update, or delete a reply

Use the Customer Review Responses resource to get a response, create or update one, or delete one. The response workflow is tied to the customer review resource ID. A review can have at most one response; the create-or-update operation uses the review ID and can replace the existing response.

Distinguish the existence of a response from its publication: Apple notes that a response can exist without being published yet. When reporting status to your team—or displaying it in an internal queue—do not label a newly submitted reply publicly visible until its state confirms publication.

Build a reliable review queue

  • Keep IDs explicit: Store the app resource ID and each customer review resource ID in separate fields to avoid sending the wrong identifier to a route.
  • Track pagination: Follow each returned next link and record enough state to resume a partially completed retrieval.
  • Represent reply states accurately: Distinguish no response, a response that exists but is not published, and a published response where the API data supports those states.
  • Handle failures deliberately: The reviewed endpoints document 429 responses. Apply rate-limit handling and consult Apple’s API overview, which links to its rate-limit guidance.
  • Guard write operations: Since create-or-update may replace a reply and API changes affect production data, verify the target review and intended response before sending writes.

The API documents the mechanics of replying; it does not prescribe how to handle a customer’s issue. Write responses as customer support communication: address the specific concern, avoid exposing private account details, and direct the customer to an appropriate support channel when the issue cannot be resolved publicly.
