To find out how much a technology company is really spending on AI, do not look for a single “AI capex” line. Reconcile cash paid for property and equipment with the property-and-equipment note, then identify which servers, networking systems, storage, data-center buildings, land and construction projects management says support AI. Check when those assets enter service, how quickly depreciation follows, and whether leases or other commitments add capacity without appearing in current-period capex. Finally, compare the spending with capacity constraints, customer demand, pricing, expected revenue and liquidity. This approach separates company-wide infrastructure investment from the narrower AI portion and shows whether a large spending plan is producing usable capacity or simply building assets that may not earn returns for years.
What does “AI capital spending” include?
AI capital spending is the portion of long-lived infrastructure investment used to train, serve or support artificial-intelligence workloads. Companies rarely disclose it as a standalone accounting category. Instead, it is usually embedded in broad technical-infrastructure or property-and-equipment lines that also serve search, cloud, storage, networking and other computing products.
Capital expenditure (capex) is cash invested in assets expected to provide benefits over multiple periods. It is different from operating expenses such as employee compensation, cloud-service costs, electricity, data-center rent, model-licensing fees and research costs that are generally recognized as incurred. A company can increase AI operating expense without buying a new server, or increase capex for general-purpose cloud capacity that is not specifically AI-related.

For reading purposes, treat AI capex as an analytical estimate, not an accounting subtotal, unless management gives a separately defined figure. Your estimate should be traceable to disclosed asset categories and management explanations rather than inferred from a marketing statement.

Which assets usually sit inside the AI build-out?
| Asset or commitment | Why it can support AI | What to verify in the filing |
|---|---|---|
| Accelerator and general-purpose servers | Training and inference compute, plus orchestration and data processing | Server purchases, useful lives, delivery timing and assets not yet in service |
| Networking equipment | Moves data among accelerators, storage and users; affects cluster scale and latency | Network equipment descriptions, capacity additions and depreciation policies |
| Storage systems | Holds training data, model checkpoints, logs and customer data | Whether storage is included in technical infrastructure or another property class |
| Data-center land and buildings | Provides power, cooling and floor space for computing equipment | Construction-in-progress balances, project timelines and owned-versus-leased capacity |
| Power, cooling and other facility systems | Determines how many high-density servers can operate reliably | Whether these costs are grouped with buildings, machinery or other equipment |
| Leased data-center capacity | Adds physical capacity without an immediate purchase of the underlying facility | Lease commitments, commencement dates, payment schedules and renewal terms |
Office facilities can appear in the same broad capital-investment description but are not automatically AI infrastructure. Keep them separate unless the company identifies a direct connection to technical capacity.
Where do I find historical capex in a filing?
Start with audited cash-flow information, then reconcile it to the property-and-equipment note. The cash-flow statement tells you what was paid during the period; the note explains what was acquired, constructed, placed in service and depreciated.
- Open the annual report or quarterly filing. In a Form 10-K, begin with the consolidated statements of cash flows and the property-and-equipment footnote. In a Form 10-Q, use the year-to-date cash-flow statement and the latest property note, while remembering that quarterly figures can be seasonal.
- Find investing cash flow. Look for “purchases of property and equipment,” “capital expenditures,” or a similarly named line. Record the period, currency, whether the amount is annual or year-to-date, and whether acquisitions or finance leases are shown separately.
- Read the capital-investments sentence in management’s discussion. Management often explains what the spending covers. Alphabet’s 2025 Form 10-K says its capital investments mainly cover servers and network equipment, data-center land and construction, and office facilities.
- Reconcile the number to the property note. Compare cash purchases with additions to property and equipment, construction-in-progress movements, disposals, foreign-exchange effects and non-cash transactions. The figures will not always match exactly because the balance-sheet roll-forward is an accrual-based view while cash flow records payments.
- Mark the portion that is still being built. Assets under construction or “not yet in service” have consumed capital but have not begun generating depreciation expense. Record that balance before judging current productivity.
Alphabet reports $52.5 billion of capital spending in 2024 and $91.4 billion in 2025, according to its 2026 filing. Those are company-wide capital-investment figures, not a separately reported AI subtotal. The year-over-year increase is approximately 74%, calculated from the reported amounts; it should not be described as a 74% increase in AI spending.
How do I rebuild the AI portion when no AI line exists?
Use a documented mapping from management’s words to accounting categories. The goal is not false precision; it is a defensible range or qualitative allocation that another reader could reproduce.
Step 1: Collect management’s definitions
Search the 10-K, 10-Q, earnings-call transcript and investor presentation for “technical infrastructure,” “servers,” “network equipment,” “data centers,” “accelerators,” “AI,” “cloud capacity” and “assets under construction.” Alphabet’s 10-Q describes technical infrastructure as servers and network equipment for computing, storage and networking, plus data-center land and building construction. That definition is broad, so it establishes the pool in which AI assets are embedded rather than proving that every dollar is AI-related.
Step 2: Separate shared infrastructure from dedicated capacity
Some systems serve both AI and non-AI workloads. A high-speed network, storage array or data-center shell may support search, cloud databases and machine-learning services at the same time. Label these items “shared” instead of assigning them entirely to AI. Dedicated accelerator purchases or management-identified AI clusters can be classified with greater confidence.
Step 3: Use operational disclosures as a cross-check
Look for statements about accelerator availability, data-center openings, regional capacity, cloud demand, backlog and utilization. Operational evidence cannot replace the cash-flow number, but it can test whether the proposed AI allocation is consistent with what the company says it is deploying.

Step 4: Report an estimate with its boundary
A careful conclusion might say that most of the technical-infrastructure increase is intended to support AI and cloud demand, while the filing does not disclose a precise AI-only amount. Do not divide total capex by a guessed percentage simply to produce a neat figure.
How can timing and depreciation reveal whether capacity is usable?
Large checks written today may not produce computing capacity or revenue immediately. Data-center projects and equipment purchases can take months or years from purchase and construction to deployment. Depreciation begins only when an asset is ready for its intended use.
Read assets not yet in service
Find the balance and year-over-year change for construction in progress and other assets not yet placed in service. A rising balance indicates that cash is being committed faster than projects are being commissioned. It can reflect healthy expansion, permitting and power-delivery delays, equipment lead times or demand uncertainty; the filing’s project descriptions and management commentary help distinguish these cases.
Compare additions with depreciation
When additions to property and equipment greatly exceed depreciation, the company is expanding its depreciable base. That gap is expected during a build-out, but it also means current earnings do not yet include the full cost of the new capacity. As clusters go live, depreciation and sometimes impairment risk rise.

Check useful lives and policy changes
Useful lives determine how quickly infrastructure reduces operating income. A longer life lowers annual depreciation initially; a shorter life raises it. Compare the current policy with prior filings and note any changes, especially for servers whose economic usefulness can be affected by rapidly changing AI hardware.
Watch commissioning language
Terms such as “ready for intended use,” “placed in service,” “ramp,” “online” and “capacity available” indicate different points in the deployment cycle. Do not treat a delivered server, a powered data-center room and revenue-generating customer capacity as the same event.
How should I read next-year capex guidance?
Forward guidance belongs in an operating context. A headline amount is useful only when you know what it includes, which costs are temporary, how much capacity it buys and whether the company expects that capacity to be scarce or idle.

Microsoft’s official FY2026 Q3 earnings call says, “We expect to invest roughly $190 billion in capital expenditures,” including “approximately $25 billion from the impact of higher component pricing.” The $25 billion is a pricing effect within the stated plan, not an additional amount to add on top. The same call says Microsoft expects to remain constrained through calendar 2026 even as it brings GPU, CPU and storage capacity online faster.
Read that guidance in four passes:
- Define the period. Confirm whether management means a fiscal year, calendar year, quarter or trailing period. Microsoft’s statement refers to calendar 2026, while its call is labeled FY2026 Q3.
- Identify included costs. Determine whether the figure includes land, buildings, servers, networking, finance leases, capitalized software or the effect of component prices.
- Test the capacity implication. “Constrained” demand suggests the company expects available capacity to be absorbed, but it does not guarantee a specific revenue return or margin.
- Compare guidance with cash and commitments. A plan can be funded through operating cash flow, debt, leases or a combination. Read liquidity and financing disclosures before calling it affordable.
Guidance is management’s expectation, not a historical fact. Track revisions in later quarters and distinguish a change in demand, a supply constraint, a construction delay and a change in accounting presentation.
How do leases, commitments and financing change the picture?
Cash capex in the current period can understate the economic commitment to AI capacity. A company may sign a long-term data-center lease, reserve equipment, make construction commitments or borrow to fund purchases before the related assets appear in current-period investing cash flow.
Read lease disclosures
Alphabet reports future data-center lease payments and explains that lease arrangements provide capacity alongside purchases of property and equipment. Add the undiscounted or disclosed lease commitments to your review, but do not add them mechanically to capex: lease payments span multiple periods and may include land, buildings, power and other services.
Review purchase and construction commitments
Look for unconditional purchase obligations, construction contracts, minimum-volume commitments and supplier deposits. Record the amount, due dates, cancellation rights and whether the commitment is for equipment, facilities or services. A commitment is not the same as a delivered asset, so keep it in a separate column.
Check debt and liquidity
Compare planned investment with cash and equivalents, operating cash flow, free cash flow, debt maturities, interest expense and available credit facilities. A company can maintain a large build-out while reporting negative free cash flow; the sustainability question is how it funds the gap and what obligations remain if demand slows.
Include assets financed outside ordinary capex
Finance leases, vendor financing and joint arrangements can create access to infrastructure without a conventional cash purchase line. Read the debt, lease and related-party notes for obligations that would otherwise be missed.

How do I compare two companies fairly?
Put both companies on the same axes before drawing a conclusion. Compare annual periods, currencies, accounting definitions and ownership models consistently. A company that leases capacity may show lower property purchases than one that owns data centers, even if their usable compute is similar.
| Comparison axis | Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Cash capex | How much cash was paid for property and equipment, and in which period? | Provides the clearest historical spending baseline |
| Infrastructure mix | What share is servers, networking, storage, land, buildings and offices? | Separates AI-relevant assets from unrelated facilities |
| Assets not yet in service | How much capital is still under construction or awaiting deployment? | Shows the lag between spending and usable capacity |
| Depreciation ramp | Are depreciation expense and useful lives changing as projects go live? | Signals future earnings pressure and asset aging |
| Lease and purchase commitments | What capacity is contracted but not owned or not yet delivered? | Captures obligations omitted from current cash capex |
| Demand and capacity evidence | Does management report shortages, backlog, utilization or customer demand? | Tests whether new capacity has a likely use |
| Liquidity and financing | Can operating cash flow and the balance sheet support the plan? | Measures execution and refinancing risk |
Tesla illustrates why labels matter. Its 2025 annual report reports $8.53 billion of capital spending in 2025 and $11.34 billion in 2024, mainly for global AI and operational infrastructure and factory expansion. The reported total fell by about 24.8% year over year, but it still combines AI infrastructure with operational and factory investment. It is therefore not directly comparable with a company that reports a technical-infrastructure subtotal unless you separate the categories or explicitly preserve the difference.

How can I test whether spending is becoming revenue?
Capex creates potential capacity; it does not prove monetization. To test the connection, build a chain from dollars spent to assets commissioned, capacity sold and financial results.
- Confirm deployment. Look for assets entering service, new data-center capacity, accelerator availability or expanded regional offerings.
- Find demand evidence. Use disclosed cloud bookings, backlog, contracted commitments, customer growth, utilization or management statements about shortages. Treat qualitative claims as directional unless the company supplies a measurable figure.
- Check pricing and mix. Revenue can rise while returns weaken if prices fall, discounts increase or lower-margin workloads dominate. Compare reported revenue growth with gross margin and product mix.
- Measure the earnings lag. New assets may add depreciation, power and staffing costs before revenue ramps. A temporary margin decline can be consistent with commissioning, but persistent underutilization is a different risk.
- Review returns and cash generation. Compare operating cash flow and free cash flow over several periods, not just the quarter in which spending peaks. A rising revenue line without improving cash economics does not establish that AI investment is earning an adequate return.
Microsoft’s statement that it expects to remain constrained through 2026 is evidence of a supply-demand imbalance, not a guarantee that every planned dollar will generate a particular return. Pair such commentary with actual capacity additions and financial results.

What mistakes distort AI-spending analysis?
- Calling total capex AI capex. Fix it by removing offices, factories and other unrelated categories or labeling the total as company-wide.
- Using earnings-call guidance as historical spending. Keep forecasts separate from cash already paid and update them when management revises the plan.
- Ignoring assets under construction. A purchased server or unfinished data center is not the same as productive capacity.
- Counting leases as if they were current cash purchases. Show lease commitments separately and explain their timing and accounting treatment.
- Comparing fiscal years without aligning periods. Convert each company to a common calendar or disclose the mismatch.
- Assuming constrained supply equals profitable demand. Capacity shortages can coexist with high power costs, customer concentration or weak pricing.
- Overlooking component-price inflation. A higher dollar plan can buy fewer units when GPU, CPU or storage prices rise. Microsoft’s approximately $25 billion component-pricing impact demonstrates why the guidance composition matters.
- Ignoring depreciation policy. Changes in useful lives can alter earnings without changing physical deployment.
- Using a single quarter to judge returns. Construction schedules and commissioning create timing noise; use several periods and track the asset roll-forward.
- Confusing accounting certainty with analytical certainty. The filing may report infrastructure precisely while leaving the AI allocation undisclosed. Preserve that distinction.
How should I present the final conclusion?
A useful conclusion has four parts: the reported historical capex, the portion that can reasonably be linked to AI, the timing and financing of deployment, and the evidence that demand can absorb the capacity. For example, you might conclude that a company is rapidly expanding technical infrastructure, that its filing does not isolate AI-only dollars, that a substantial balance remains under construction, and that management cites capacity constraints while liquidity and lease obligations determine execution risk.
This format gives readers a decision-ready answer without pretending that an accounting line exists when it does not. It also makes future quarters easy to update: replace the cash-flow figure, refresh the property roll-forward and commitments, and test whether capacity, demand and returns moved together.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which filing is best for finding a company’s annual AI infrastructure spending?
Use the latest Form 10-K for the audited annual cash-flow statement, property-and-equipment roll-forward and lease commitments. Earnings-call remarks and the 10-Q add more recent guidance, but they should be reconciled to the annual filing rather than substituted for it.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Can a company capitalize AI software development costs as capex?
Only costs that meet the company’s applicable accounting rules are capitalized, and treatment varies by project and jurisdiction. Check the software-cost policy and intangible-asset note instead of assuming every model or application expense is included in property and equipment.
Why can two companies with similar AI capacity report very different capex?
Ownership structure is a major reason: one company may build and own data centers while another leases capacity or uses vendor financing. Differences in currency, fiscal year, useful lives and whether factories or offices are included also change the reported totals.
What signal suggests an AI build-out is becoming a financial problem?
A combination of rising assets not yet in service, repeated project delays, accelerating depreciation, weakening demand and shrinking liquidity is more concerning than any one indicator. Look for the pattern across several filings and compare commitments with realistic operating cash flow.
