You can use Apple Intelligence on an iPhone without routinely sending your prompts away: Apple says many models run entirely on the device. More demanding requests may go to Private Cloud Compute (PCC), where Apple says the request data is processed temporarily and is not stored or made accessible to Apple. ChatGPT is a separate, optional route. Keep Siri’s confirmation prompt enabled, avoid sending confidential material through external extensions, and review the Apple Intelligence & PCC Report when it is available. If you use ChatGPT without signing in, OpenAI says it does not receive your IP address, store requests, or use them to train models; signing in applies your account controls and can save chats to history.
What happens to your data when Apple Intelligence handles a request?
Apple Intelligence uses a layered design: it tries on-device processing first, then uses Private Cloud Compute for requests that need more capacity. A separate ChatGPT extension is optional and follows different privacy controls.
On-device processing
Apple Support states that “in many cases Apple Intelligence models run entirely on device so that a task can be completed without data leaving your device.” When a task can be completed this way, the prompt, relevant context and result stay on the iPhone rather than being sent to a remote service.
On-device processing is the least complicated privacy path because there is no off-device request to another provider. It is still sensible to limit the personal information you place in any prompt: a local model can produce a useful result without needing account numbers, passwords, private keys or identifying details.

Private Cloud Compute for complex requests
When an on-device model cannot complete a request, Apple Intelligence may use Private Cloud Compute. Apple says PCC receives only the data relevant to that request, removes it after processing, and lets independent researchers inspect the server code. Apple also says that “the data being processed in Private Cloud Compute is not stored or made accessible to Apple.”
Apple’s privacy information distinguishes request content from limited operational metadata. Apple may collect the approximate request and response size, the features used and processing time. That metadata does not include the prompt itself or the returned result, and Apple says it is not linked to an Apple Account.
Apple separately states that private personal data and interactions are never used to train its foundation models unless you explicitly choose to help improve them. That statement concerns Apple’s foundation models; it does not replace the account and privacy terms that apply if you send a request to an optional third-party extension.

Siri and some Apple Intelligence experiences can hand a request to ChatGPT when you enable that extension. This is not the same path as on-device Apple Intelligence or PCC, so review its confirmation, account and history settings separately.
How can I check whether Apple Intelligence requests leave my iPhone?
Use Apple’s built-in report when it is available on your iPhone. It is the most direct way to inspect off-device Apple Intelligence activity rather than guessing from the wording of a prompt.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security.
- Open Apple Intelligence & PCC Report.
- Review the listed off-device requests and the feature associated with each entry.
The report is documented as available only on supported setups. If you do not see the menu, you cannot use that report on the current configuration; the absence of the menu is not proof that every request is on-device. Continue to use the ChatGPT controls and conservative prompt practices described below.

A report entry does not mean Apple can read the text of your request. Apple’s PCC description says request data is removed after processing and is not stored or made accessible to Apple, while the legal privacy description limits possible collection to operational details such as approximate size, feature and processing time.

Keep confirmation enabled if you want to approve each hand-off, or disable the extension entirely if you do not want Siri to use ChatGPT.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Siri or Apple Intelligence & Siri; the label depends on the iOS configuration.
- Tap ChatGPT.
- Leave Confirm Requests enabled to receive a prompt before a request is shared with ChatGPT.
- To remove the route, turn off Use ChatGPT.
- To stop Siri from suggesting the extension, turn off Setup Prompts.
Confirmation is a useful compromise when you occasionally want ChatGPT but do not want silent sharing. Read the prompt before approving it, especially if Siri has included conversation context, a document, an image or another attachment.
Photos and files need an explicit confirmation
In Apple’s documented ChatGPT flow, photos and files require confirmation. You should still check what is attached and why it is needed before accepting the prompt; a confirmation screen is an opportunity to remove an unnecessary image or document, not a reason to approve automatically.
Is ChatGPT on iPhone private without an account?
OpenAI describes different controls for unauthenticated and signed-in use. Without an account, OpenAI says it does not receive your IP address, store requests or use them to train models. Signing in changes the applicable controls: your ChatGPT account settings and privacy policy apply, and conversations may be saved to chat history.

How should I handle sensitive prompts and attachments?
Use the least-disclosure approach: provide only the information needed for the result, and keep highly confidential material on the iPhone whenever the feature supports on-device processing.
Use a prompt that reveals less
- Replace names, account numbers, addresses and other identifiers with neutral labels before asking for a summary or rewrite.
- Ask for a method or template instead of pasting the underlying confidential record.
- Remove unrelated pages, screenshots and file metadata before attaching anything.
- Do not place passwords, authentication codes, private encryption keys or security answers in an AI prompt.
These habits reduce exposure regardless of whether a model runs locally, on PCC or through ChatGPT. They also make it easier to understand what you are approving when a confirmation dialog appears.
Keep material on-device when the feature allows it
If a task can be completed with an on-device Apple Intelligence model, it avoids an off-device request. If the task is complex enough to use PCC, Apple says only relevant data is processed and then removed, but the content still leaves the phone temporarily. For highly confidential material, postpone the task, simplify it until it can run locally, or do it manually rather than sending it to an external extension.

Treat external extensions as separate services
Apple’s PCC privacy promises do not automatically apply to ChatGPT or another extension. Before approving an external request, check which service is named, whether you are signed in and whether the result will be retained in an account history.
What do ChatGPT confirmation and setup prompts protect against?
Confirm Requests creates a decision point before Siri shares a request with ChatGPT. It helps prevent an accidental hand-off caused by a vague command, but it cannot judge whether the content is confidential; you must read the request and attachments.
Setup Prompts controls Siri’s suggestions to configure ChatGPT. Turning it off removes those suggestions without requiring you to disable all Apple Intelligence features. If you want no ChatGPT traffic at all, use Use ChatGPT instead.

How can a privacy screen protect AI conversations in public?
A model-matched privacy screen protector reduces the angle from which people beside you can read the display. It can limit shoulder-surfing of prompts, attached photos, documents and generated answers while you use AI in a train, café, office or other public place.
Match the protector to the exact iPhone model and display size. A poor fit can leave edges visible or interfere with normal viewing, defeating the purpose. A screen protector does not change what Apple Intelligence, PCC or ChatGPT receives; it addresses visual disclosure to people physically near the phone.
Which privacy setup should you choose?
Choose the route that matches the sensitivity of the task and how much convenience you need.
| Your priority | Recommended setting | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum control over third-party sharing | Turn off Use ChatGPT; use Apple Intelligence on-device features and inspect the PCC report when available. | No optional ChatGPT hand-off can occur, while Apple’s on-device/PCC protections remain available. |
| Occasional ChatGPT help with a review step | Leave Use ChatGPT on and keep Confirm Requests enabled. | You can approve individual requests and reject an unexpected attachment. |
| Lowest account linkage for an approved ChatGPT request | Use ChatGPT without signing in, if that option is offered in your flow. | OpenAI says unauthenticated requests are not tied to an account history and are not stored or used for training. |
| Chat history and personalized account controls | Sign in to ChatGPT, then review its account privacy settings. | Signed-in use can save conversations to chat history and is governed by the account’s settings and privacy policy. |
| Protection from people nearby | Use a privacy screen protector designed for your exact iPhone model. | It reduces visual exposure without changing network or account behavior. |
What should I do if a request is sent unexpectedly?
First, identify whether the hand-off was to PCC or ChatGPT. PCC activity can be checked in Settings > Privacy & Security > Apple Intelligence & PCC Report when the report is available. A ChatGPT hand-off should be preceded by the confirmation prompt when Confirm Requests is enabled.

- Turn off Use ChatGPT if you do not want any further extension requests.

- For future prompts, remove confidential text and attachments before trying an on-device alternative.
If you were signed in to ChatGPT, check the conversation history and account privacy controls because signed-in chats may be retained there. If you were not signed in, OpenAI’s stated policy is that it does not store the request, receive your IP address or use the request to train models.

What are the limits of iPhone AI privacy controls?
No setting makes every AI interaction private in the same way. On-device processing avoids sending data away for that task; PCC sends relevant data to Apple’s compute service under Apple’s stated non-retention design; ChatGPT follows OpenAI’s unauthenticated or account-based controls. The provider, route and sign-in state therefore matter more than the phrase “AI” alone.
The PCC report is an auditing aid, not a universal transcript of every model operation. It is only available on supported configurations and reports off-device Apple Intelligence requests rather than exposing the text of those requests. Keep confirmation enabled for ChatGPT and avoid placing secrets in prompts even when a privacy feature is enabled.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does turning off ChatGPT disable Apple Intelligence on my iPhone?
No. The Use ChatGPT switch controls the optional ChatGPT extension. Apple Intelligence features that run on-device or use Private Cloud Compute can remain available, subject to Apple’s feature availability on your device.
Can Apple employees read a Private Cloud Compute request?
Apple says PCC request data is removed after processing and is not stored or made accessible to Apple. Apple may collect limited operational details such as approximate size, feature and processing time, but says those details do not include the request or result and are not linked to an Apple Account.
Are Siri conversations automatically added to ChatGPT history?
Only signed-in ChatGPT use can save conversations to a ChatGPT account’s history, according to OpenAI’s stated controls. Unauthenticated use is described as not storing requests; keeping Confirm Requests on lets you decide whether a request is sent at all.
Why can’t I find the Apple Intelligence & PCC Report menu?
Apple documents the report as available only on supported configurations. If the menu is absent, use the ChatGPT extension controls to prevent optional sharing and follow the on-device-first approach for sensitive work.
Does a privacy screen stop an AI provider from receiving my data?
No. A privacy screen addresses people viewing the display from the side. It does not alter on-device processing, PCC requests, ChatGPT account history or the data included in an approved prompt.
