Connect an AI agent to your bank only through the bank’s official authorization flow, grant the narrowest permissions available, and keep money-moving actions under your direct control. Do not give an agent your reusable online-banking password. Prefer read-only access, strong multifactor authentication (MFA), transaction alerts and limits, and an approval step in the bank’s own interface before any transfer, bill payment, or other irreversible change.
A connection can expose more than a balance: it may reveal transaction histories, account identifiers, and details you include in prompts. Before you authorize it, check what the agent can access, how the service handles that data, and how to revoke the connection. The guidance below draws on U.S. financial-regulator materials and Australian privacy guidance; bank features, legal protections, and authorization options vary by institution and location.
Is it safe to connect a bank account to an AI agent?
It can be done with less risk when the connection uses the bank’s official consent process, grants limited permissions, and leaves sensitive actions under human control. No connection is risk-free: an agent or its provider may gain access to financial data, and a poorly designed setup may expose credentials or enable unwanted activity.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

The key distinction is how access is granted. Credential-based connections may require a third party to collect or retain your bank login details. An API- or token-based connection can avoid sharing your reusable password, but it still needs careful permission limits, monitoring, and a reliable way to revoke access. The Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (FFIEC) addressed these different access risks in its 2021 guidance on customer-permissioned entities.

There is no central, current statistic establishing the risk of consumers linking accounts specifically to AI agents. The practical decision is therefore about the access being requested and the controls around it—not a blanket claim that every agent or every connection is safe or unsafe.
What a connection could expose
- Account data: balances, transactions, account identifiers, and potentially information about your spending habits.
- Credentials or tokens: a password in a screen-scraping arrangement, or an authorization token in a bank-mediated connection. A token can still be sensitive if it grants broad or persistent access.
- Prompt and response data: financial details you type into the AI system and outputs that may repeat or summarize those details.
- Authority to act: depending on the permissions, an integration might be able to initiate payments, add payees, or change settings—not just read balances.
Read the actual authorization screen. Do not infer a connection’s permissions from a product description, the word “secure,” or the fact that it uses AI.
Should I give an AI assistant my bank password?
No. Do not type a bank password, one-time code, recovery code, or card security code into an AI chat, browser extension, or unfamiliar intermediary. If the bank offers an official consent or authorization screen, use that instead.
The CFPB has described screen scraping as risky because it typically requires consumers to give account passwords to third parties. With a bank-mediated authorization flow, the bank—not the AI chat—presents the consent step. That does not eliminate all risk, but it avoids handing an agent your reusable banking password as a routine way to connect.
If a service insists that you enter your bank credentials into its own page, pause and verify that page’s domain and role independently. A familiar logo is not proof that the page belongs to your bank. If you have already entered credentials into an unverified service, use the response steps below rather than waiting to see whether anything happens.
What permissions should I allow?
Allow only what the task needs. If the agent is categorizing spending or answering a question about recent transactions, read-only access to the relevant data is a safer fit than permission to transfer money or modify your account.

| Permission or access model | What it may allow | Practical choice |
|---|---|---|
| Read-only balances or transactions | View account information; the precise scope depends on the bank’s consent screen. | Prefer this when the task only needs analysis or summaries. |
| Payments, transfers, or bill pay | Initiate or schedule a movement of money, subject to the provider and bank’s controls. | Leave disabled unless there is a specific, necessary use. Require independent approval in the bank interface. |
| New payees or beneficiary management | Add or change destinations that may receive future payments. | Do not grant by default. Treat adding a destination as a high-risk change. |
| Profile, security, or card controls | Change account details or settings; the exact capabilities vary. | Exclude unless the use case truly requires them and you understand the recovery path. |
| Credential-based access or screen scraping | May require a third party to receive or retain bank login credentials. | Avoid when an official bank authorization option is available. |
| Bank-authorized API or token access | Provides access according to the scopes shown at authorization; token behavior varies. | Prefer a narrow, revocable scope, but still monitor and review it. |
These categories describe common permission differences, not a promise that every bank labels them the same way. If the consent page does not make a capability clear, do not approve it until you can confirm what it permits.

Use a separate account only when it meaningfully limits exposure
If you want to experiment and your bank supports it, a separate account with a low balance can limit the amount directly exposed to a compromised payment permission. It is not a substitute for read-only access or careful authorization: a connected account may still reveal sensitive transaction data, and money may be moved within whatever authority you grant.
How do I check an AI service before connecting it?
Verify both the service and the data terms before granting access. The OAIC’s AI privacy guidance, published in 2024 and updated in 2025, recommends due diligence about intended use, testing, human oversight, risks, and who can access inputs and outputs.
- Confirm the service’s identity. Check the exact domain, legal entity, and support channel. Do not rely only on a link in a message or an app’s branding.
- Read the bank’s authorization screen. Note which accounts and actions are in scope, how long the permission lasts if stated, and whether the screen identifies the receiving service.
- Review the privacy policy and security documentation. Look for what financial data is collected, who can access it, how long it is retained, whether it is used to train or improve models, and whether it may be used for unrelated purposes.
- Find the deletion and revocation routes. Determine how to delete stored information and how to remove the bank connection. These may be separate processes: deleting an AI chat does not necessarily revoke a bank token.
- Check subprocessors and incident terms. Understand whether other providers may process the data and what the service says about breach notification.
- Decide whether the persistent connection is necessary. A local bank export or a manually entered, masked summary may answer the question without granting ongoing access.
If the provider does not clearly explain retention, deletion, access, and training use, treat that uncertainty as a reason not to share sensitive financial information. The OAIC guidance concerns Australian privacy practice; it is not a guarantee that every provider follows the same rules or that its recommendations have identical legal effect elsewhere.
How should I secure the bank and AI accounts?
Use layered security rather than relying on one password or one safeguard. The FFIEC’s 2021 authentication guidance warns that relying on a single control or authentication solution can increase risk to information systems and digital banking services.

Turn on MFA for both the bank and the AI service. Where both support it, prefer a passkey or a FIDO2/WebAuthn security key over password-only access. The CFPB identifies hardware identification devices and phishing-resistant Web Authentication as important options for protecting sensitive accounts. MFA makes unauthorized access harder; it does not make a broad permission safe or eliminate the need to monitor the account.

Turn on alerts and set limits
Enable notifications for logins, unfamiliar devices, new payees, transfers, withdrawals, and profile or security changes. Where the bank allows it, set low transaction limits. FFIEC guidance identifies monitoring and transaction amount limits as parts of a layered approach to high-risk activity.
Keep software current
Apply security updates to the operating system, browser, bank app, and agent integration. The CFPB has identified failure to apply security updates as a data-security weakness that can expose consumers to harm.
Protect sensitive information outside the connection
Treat balances, transaction details, account identifiers, and prompts containing financial information as personal data. Mask account numbers when the task does not require the full value, and do not paste identity documents or authentication codes into a general-purpose chat. Consider who at the AI provider can access inputs and outputs, how long they remain available, and whether deletion covers both.
Can an AI agent move money from my account?
It may be able to if you grant payment or transfer authority and the bank and integration support those actions. A read-only connection should not be treated as permission to transact; a request to add money-moving access is a separate security decision that deserves a fresh review.
Do not let a model’s text output serve as the sole approval for an irreversible action. Before authorizing a transfer, bill payment, or new payee, verify the amount, recipient, destination account, timing, and any recurring schedule in the bank’s trusted interface. A human review is especially important when an action cannot readily be undone.
This division of responsibility matters because an AI-generated explanation can be mistaken or incomplete. The OAIC recommends human oversight in AI use, while FFIEC guidance calls for stronger controls around high-risk transactions. Keep the final decision and confirmation outside the model’s generated text.

How do I compare two bank-connection options?
Compare the actual authorization and controls, not just claims about convenience or security. A provider that offers a narrow, revocable connection and human approval may be preferable to one that asks for credentials or broad autonomous authority.

Remove the connection from the bank’s connected-app or consent dashboard, if available, and also use the AI provider’s controls to disconnect the account. If you cannot find a revocation option, contact the bank using a verified channel and ask it to revoke the third party’s access.
Revocation stops future access according to the bank’s process, but it may not delete data the AI provider already received. Handle deletion separately through the provider’s data controls or support channel, and review whether the bank connection, provider account, and stored chat history each have a distinct removal step.
Review the bank’s connected-app dashboard and the AI service’s access logs regularly. Remove stale connections, and rotate credentials or tokens after suspected exposure. The FFIEC’s guidance emphasizes monitoring and controls for customer-permissioned entities.
What should I do if I suspect the connection was misused?
Act promptly: stop the agent, revoke the connection, secure the bank account from a trusted device, and contact the bank. Use the bank’s official app or the phone number printed on your card or statement—not contact details in a suspicious message.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does deleting an AI chat revoke its access to my bank?
Not necessarily. A chat’s deletion and a bank’s authorization are separate controls, so check the bank’s connected-app list and revoke the connection there as well.
Can I safely share a bank statement with an AI agent instead of connecting my account?
A file avoids creating a persistent bank connection, but it still exposes the statement’s personal information to the AI service. Remove unnecessary account identifiers and review the provider’s retention, access, and training terms before uploading it.

Contact the bank through its official app, website, or the phone number on your card or statement and ask how to revoke third-party authorization. Keep the provider’s name and the date you connected it available when you make the request.
Does MFA stop an AI agent from making an unauthorized transfer?
MFA helps protect account sign-in, but it does not guarantee that every action will require a new authentication challenge. Use narrow permissions, bank-side approval for transactions, and alerts and limits as additional controls.
