Protecting greenhouse crops during a heating or cooling failure starts before one happens: map the systems each crop zone depends on, detect failures quickly, and have a tested plan for backup power, safe heat, and manual response. During an outage, verify conditions at crop level and follow that plan; no single generator, alarm, or shade measure can guarantee crop-safe conditions.

Why one failure can affect several greenhouse systems

Greenhouse equipment is interconnected. Electricity may be needed for fans, water pumps, heating equipment, controls, ventilation, and inflation fans. A power interruption can therefore affect both crop conditions and the structure’s operation. UF/IFAS describes possible production losses and damage to plant material from outages, but does not give a general loss percentage. UF/IFAS: Auxiliary Power Units for Greenhouse Operations

Start by mapping dependencies for each crop zone rather than treating the greenhouse as one uniform space. Identify which equipment maintains temperature, moves air, supplies water, operates vents or evaporative cooling, and supports the structure. Mark which loads are essential to protect crops or prevent structural problems, and note any shared equipment whose failure could affect multiple zones.

Prepare before an outage

Write a response and contact plan

Document what staff should check, who can authorize actions, and how to escalate a failure. Include contact details for the equipment technician, fuel supplier, generator support, and—if relevant—providers who can supply or rent emergency heating equipment. Alberta Agriculture recommends planning for complete heat failure and identifying rental equipment contacts in advance. BioGreen Electric Greenhouse Heater & Fan with Digital Thermostat PALMA | 1500 Watts, 5100 BTU/hr | 5800 ft³/h Air Circulation -58 to 210.2°F | Stainless Steel | Spraywater Proof
  • TWO SEPARATELY ADJUSTABLE HEATING ELEMENTS: 750 watts or 1500 watts power. The heater is ideal for rooms up to 120 ft² with an average height of 6.6 feet.
  • PRECISE TEMPERATURE CONTROL: The thermostat automatically starts and stops the heater when the desired temperature is reached. The temperature range is from 32°F to185°F.
  • AIR CIRCULATION MODE: Activating the air circulation mode turns the heater into a fan. The air movement prevents heat buildup around plants.
  • QUICK AND EVEN AIR CIRCULATION: The air circulation heater is very efficient and easily circulates up to 5800 ft³ of air per hour. Since the heater does not run as long, you save electricity and money.
  • SPLASH-PROOF ACCORDING TO IPX4: Thanks to splash protection, the heater can be safely and reliably used in damp rooms. It can also withstand rain and irrigation water without any problems.

Assign responsibilities for checking alarms, measuring conditions, contacting support, and operating equipment manually. Make sure more than one trained person knows the safe procedures and where necessary controls and supplies are kept.

Install and test alerts

Use alerts that can warn staff about temperature excursions and power failure. UGA Cooperative Extension discusses warning devices for heating malfunction or power failure, including battery-powered alarms; Alabama Cooperative Extension recommends an emergency call system that monitors outages and indoor temperatures. Test the full alert path, not just the sensor: confirm that backup power works where needed, notifications reach the intended people, and communication still works under the conditions in which an outage might occur. Place sensors where readings represent crop conditions in relevant zones, and compare them periodically with an independent thermometer. An alarm indicates that someone should investigate; it does not establish that every part of a greenhouse has the same temperature.

Size backup power for actual critical loads

Choose a greenhouse standby generator based on the critical equipment it must run—not on a generic size or a guess based on greenhouse area. List running loads and account for motor starting demand. A qualified electrician or generator professional can assess loads, transfer arrangements, installation, and applicable electrical requirements. Consider whether the planned supply can operate the controls, fans, pumps, and equipment needed to maintain heat or ventilation. UF/IFAS and Alberta guidance both emphasize auxiliary power for essential greenhouse operations. Test the generator and its connection under a planned procedure, and confirm fuel availability and the equipment’s operating needs. NC State Extension’s winter-storm guidance stresses checking equipment and ensuring fuel is available ahead of a storm; its priorities for that situation include heaters and inflation fans. Plan for safe backup heat and manual options

Consider installed spare or parallel heating equipment, or portable heaters appropriate to the greenhouse and crop zones. If rental equipment may be needed, identify its availability and requirements ahead of time. UF/IFAS says greenhouse heating must maintain conditions without harmful fumes, and its maintenance guidance says fossil-fueled unit heaters should be vented outside. Do not treat an unvented improvised combustion device as a safe universal substitute. Keep suitable shade materials accessible if they fit the greenhouse and crop’s light needs. Train staff to use vents and other manual controls safely, and define when manual operation is appropriate.

What to do when heating fails

  1. Confirm the conditions. Check an independent thermometer at crop level in representative zones and compare it with controller and alarm readings. Check power, fuel, and equipment status without entering an unsafe area or attempting an unsafe repair.
  2. Follow the site plan. Restore safe power if that is the identified response, or activate the planned redundant or rental heat source. Use the zone map to focus attention on vulnerable crops and areas; the extension guidance does not establish a universal ranking of which crop zone to save first.
  3. Keep combustion and electrical work safe. Use only equipment installed and operated for the conditions, with required external venting for fossil-fueled unit heaters. Do not improvise wiring or use combustion devices in ways that could expose people or plants to harmful fumes.
  4. Track the incident. Record the time, zone readings, actions taken, and recovery. This helps staff coordinate the response and assess what needs attention after conditions stabilize.

What to do when cooling or ventilation fails

  1. Locate the failure. Measure temperature in representative crop areas and determine whether the problem is power, a fan, pump, evaporative-cooling pad, vent, or control. UF/IFAS notes that impaired evaporative cooling can reduce efficiency and allow greenhouse temperatures to rise. UF/IFAS: Maintenance Guide for Greenhouse Ventilation, Evaporative Cooling Heating Systems
  2. Restore airflow or cooling using the established procedure. Use planned backup power or safe manual operation where available. Ventilation can bring greenhouse air closer to outside-air temperature, but it cannot by itself cool below that temperature. UF/IFAS: Florida Greenhouse Design
  3. Reduce direct sun where appropriate. Deploy prepared shade material if it suits the crop’s light requirements and the structure. Extension resources identify shade cloth and related materials as sun-protection measures, but their effectiveness depends on the material, installation, weather, and crop needs. Shade is supplemental; it cannot be relied on to prevent injury in every extreme-heat situation. Oklahoma State Extension: Greenhouse Heating and Cooling UC Davis greenhouse climate resource
  4. Prioritize repair and get support. Contact the responsible technician or crop adviser while continuing to monitor affected zones. Do not assume that a cooler reading in one location represents conditions throughout the greenhouse.

Use crop-specific limits, not a universal threshold

There is no single temperature-and-duration threshold in the cited extension guidance that applies to all crops and growth stages. The risk from an excursion depends on the crop, stage, greenhouse design, outside weather, and how conditions change over time. Set alarm limits and response triggers using crop-specific guidance and local horticultural advice rather than applying one number to every greenhouse. The cited guidance comes largely from North American extension and government sources; operators elsewhere should also follow local codes and specialist advice.
