Store an old painting indoors in a clean, secure place with stable temperature and humidity, away from water, direct heat, vibration, and exterior-wall temperature swings. Handle it as little as possible. Before moving or wrapping it, check the paint and frame: if paint is flaking, the surface has fragile raised brushwork, or any part is loose or unstable, ask a paintings conservator for advice first.

Choose a stable, safe storage location

For paintings on canvas or wood, the Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI) identifies stable relative humidity between 40% and 60% as safest, with 50% RH used as a central value for consistency between lending institutions. CCI gives 16–25°C as an acceptable temperature range. These are general guidelines, not guaranteed safe limits for every painting: the support, condition, prior environmental history, and speed or severity of changes all affect risk. Aim for steady conditions rather than trying to force an old painting to a precise target. See CCI’s Environmental Guidelines for Paintings and Storage and Display Guidelines for Paintings.

Choose a clean, secure indoor room with enough clear space to move the painting without bumping it. Restrict access where practical, and keep cleaning equipment and workshop supplies elsewhere. Avoid:

  • Attics: They can experience extreme heat and dryness.
  • Damp or flood-prone basements: Water and high humidity can damage both the painting and its support.
  • Poorly insulated exterior walls: Their temperature and humidity can fluctuate more than the room interior.
  • Heating or cooling units and direct heat: Local temperature changes can stress the object.
  • Vibration-prone spots: Repeated movement can threaten a fragile painting or frame.

A temperature-and-humidity monitor can help you observe room conditions, but it does not control them. CCI’s guidance is not an endorsement of any particular consumer monitor.

Choose protection to suit the painting

There is no single best wrapping or housing method for every old painting. The right choice depends on whether it is framed, its support and condition, the risk of contact with the paint, its size, and the protection needed from dust, dirt, water, and handling. CCI discusses several options in its storage and display guidance.

Painting or storage situation Possible protection Important qualification
Framed painting in stable storage A suitable frame and protective backing board A frame can support and protect the work; an original frame may also be historically integral.
Unframed work with exposed edges or surface A handling-travel-storage (HTS) frame Choose a design suited to the work; do not let housing press on vulnerable paint.
Smaller work needing a protective enclosure A custom container made from stable material such as Coroplast or acid-free multi-ply matboard Suitability depends on the work’s size, support, and condition.
Work needing protection from dust, dirt, or water Polyethylene or Mylar sheeting; an HTS frame may also be covered or sealed with polyethylene Wrapping is not appropriate for every condition and may be unsafe around fragile impasto or unstable paint.

Do not apply plastic film directly against flaking paint or fragile raised brushwork without conservation advice. For transit or uncontrolled storage, CCI recommends airtight, impermeable polyethylene wrapping in relevant cases, but the choice and application must account for the painting’s condition and need to acclimatize. Its Caring for paintings guidance does not make this a universal method for home storage.

Inspect and handle it carefully before moving

Handling is a major source of damage: CCI states in Basic Handling of Paintings that “Most damage to paintings and their frames occurs during handling.” Check the painting and frame before lifting. Look for flaking paint, loose decorative elements, weak frame corners, tears, or other instability. If the work or frame cannot be moved safely, arrange for a conservator or museum technician to stabilize it in place first.

  1. Plan the route and destination. Clear obstacles, doors, and the storage space before lifting.
  2. Use enough people for a controlled lift. Support the frame and painting securely; when moving a painting horizontally from a crate, support the corners.
  3. Keep hands off the painted surface. Do not press on the back of a canvas.
  4. Avoid temperature extremes during transport. Minimize exposure while moving the work to its stable storage location.

Canvas, wood panel, board, and other supports respond differently to environmental change. An old painting may also have brittle paint or previous damage that is not obvious from a quick glance. For support-specific considerations, see CCI’s Know Your Paintings.

When to consult a paintings conservator

Get professional advice before moving, wrapping, or making protective housing for a painting with flaking or lifting paint, fragile impasto, a tear, loose frame parts, a weak support, or another sign of instability. A conservator can assess whether the work needs stabilization and whether a proposed covering or enclosure could touch or trap moisture against vulnerable areas. This is especially important for valuable, fragile, or unusual paintings; general preventive-care guidance cannot substitute for an examination of the individual object.
