For a large screenshot job in n8n, first make sure each URL is its own item, then use Loop Over Items only if you need controlled batch sizes, delays, or multi-step handling. Send each URL to a screenshot endpoint with the HTTP Request node, save each returned image as it completes, and pass file references—not a growing pile of image binaries—to later steps. Start with a small pilot: screenshot files can put much more pressure on memory than ordinary JSON records.
Build the workflow around individual URL items
n8n generally runs nodes on incoming items automatically. If the input already contains one item per URL, an HTTP Request node can process those items without an explicit loop. Add Loop Over Items (formerly Split in Batches) when you need to pace requests, set a batch size, insert a delay, or run several steps per batch.
When your URLs are already separate items
Connect the incoming URL items to the screenshot request path. Check that each item has a field containing one URL, such as url, before configuring the request. Do not add a loop just to make an ordinary node run once per item; n8n’s item processing already does that.
When your URLs are inside one array
If a single item contains an array of URLs, expand it into separate items with the Split Out node (or an equivalent transformation) before per-URL processing. Otherwise, the next node may receive the array as one item rather than an individual item for every URL. After splitting, verify the item count and confirm each item contains the intended URL.

Choose a screenshot method
Hosted screenshot API through HTTP Request
For ordinary URL-to-image capture, a hosted screenshot API called from n8n’s HTTP Request node is a straightforward approach. Browserless documents a POST screenshot endpoint that accepts a page URL and optional Puppeteer-style screenshot options, returns an image, and has an n8n integration example. Put the API token in n8n Credentials rather than embedding it in a workflow expression. Check the provider’s current documentation for authentication, request limits, supported options, and whether its hosted browser can reach your target pages.
Browserless’s Screenshot API documentation covers its request and capture options; its n8n integration templates show an HTTP Request integration. Configure the HTTP Request node to make the documented POST request, map the current item’s URL into the request body, authenticate using the credential type supported by the provider, and set the response format to a file where appropriate. The exact body fields and credential configuration should follow the current endpoint documentation.
Self-managed browser automation
Use a browser automation runtime such as Puppeteer when the workflow requires custom browser behavior or interactions that your selected screenshot API does not support. Puppeteer documents navigation and Page.screenshot() for saving captures; see its screenshots guide. This route makes you responsible for having a compatible browser/runtime available, managing execution and output files, and maintaining any custom logic. The available documentation does not establish a universal cost or reliability winner between a hosted API and self-managed Puppeteer.

Set capture options for the page you need
Viewport or full-page image
Choose viewport capture when the visible screen is the artifact you need; choose full-page capture when the full document matters. Browserless documents PNG, JPEG, and WebP output and full-page capture. Confirm the selected response format in a pilot and ensure the resulting file is readable by the storage and downstream nodes.
Lazy-loaded content and page state
A full-page setting does not guarantee that every page section will have loaded before the screenshot. Pages can depend on scrolling to trigger lazy-loaded images, scripts, or content. If lower sections are missing, add a deliberate scroll or wait strategy supported by your endpoint or browser automation, then inspect the result. Authentication, cookie or consent screens, site scripts, load timing, and service controls can also change what is visible in the capture.
Batch the work without overwhelming n8n
Pick a conservative pilot size
There is no universal screenshot batch size: image payloads, node behavior, available memory, the API’s limits, and request timing all matter. n8n Help Center’s general large-workflow guidance suggests starting around 100 to 200 small records, then adjusting for payload size, node behavior, memory, and external limits. That is not a screenshot-specific recommendation. Because screenshots can be much larger than small records, begin with a much smaller pilot and increase cautiously after checking actual memory use and provider limits.
Use Loop Over Items to set the batch size for your workload. If the target API imposes a rate limit or you need deliberate pacing, pair the loop with a Wait node and measure the interval against the provider’s documented limits. Do not assume that a batch size that works for URLs or small JSON objects will work for image binaries.

Wire the loop path correctly
- Prepare items: split an array of URLs into individual items if necessary.
- Start the loop: connect the prepared items to Loop Over Items and choose a small pilot batch size.
- Process each batch: route the loop output through the screenshot request and the image-storage step. Add a Wait node where pacing is needed.
- Return control: connect the end of that processing path back to Loop Over Items so it can handle the next batch.
- Finish reporting: connect the node’s done output to final reporting or any aggregation that uses compact metadata.
If an endpoint supports one bulk request for an array of URLs, configure the HTTP Request node to make one request per batch—not one request for each item inside that batch—and verify the endpoint’s documented batch contract before building around it.
Store images as they finish
Image binaries can dominate the data carried through a workflow. Configure the HTTP Request node to return a file where appropriate, write each image to durable storage as its batch completes, and pass a filename, object key, or other reference to downstream steps. Avoid collecting every image binary into one final aggregation. n8n’s HTTP Request node documentation describes its request and response configuration.
Keep the original URL alongside each file reference and record an error status for captures that fail. That makes it possible to identify the affected pages and retry only those items rather than losing the connection between an image and its source URL.
Validate a small run before scaling up
- Compare item counts before and after splitting to confirm one item exists per URL.
- Check that the URL attached to each response matches the record being processed.
- Open saved files and verify the format and dimensions match the capture settings.
- Test a page with lazy-loaded content and a page that may show an authentication or consent screen.
- Confirm failed captures retain their URL and error status, and that the loop continues or stops as intended.
- Observe workflow memory and request behavior as you increase the pilot size; the reviewed sources establish no universal throughput, success rate, or retry policy.
Troubleshoot common failures
Only one screenshot is created from many URLs
The source may be one item containing a URL array. Split the array into individual items before per-URL processing, then inspect the item count and URL field on the output.

The workflow runs too quickly or hits service limits
Use Loop Over Items for controlled batches and add a Wait node if pacing is needed. Check the selected API’s current limits and tune batch size and interval using observed behavior; n8n’s general guidance for small records is not an image-job setting.
Memory rises or the workflow becomes unwieldy
Do not retain all screenshots as binaries across the full workflow. Save each file as it completes and carry a compact reference and status forward. Reduce the pilot batch size if resource pressure continues, and assess the storage and execution behavior of your n8n deployment.
The screenshot is blank, incomplete, or shows the wrong page state
Check the response and the actual rendered page. The site may still be loading, may require authentication, may show a consent screen, or may defer content until scrolling. Adjust the documented wait, navigation, or scrolling behavior and test that page again before scaling out.
The saved file cannot be opened
Check that the HTTP Request node is configured to receive a file, that the endpoint response is actually an image, and that the selected output format and file-handling path agree. Test one response end to end before running the full list.
