To print a webpage with fewer or no pictures, first open a simplified or reading view, then print that view. In Firefox, use Print > More settings > Format > Simplified when the option appears. In Chrome, open Reading mode, switch Images off, and print the reading view. In Edge, leave Background graphics unchecked; this removes backgrounds, not necessarily inline photos. Always inspect print preview because browser support and page layout vary.
What “without images” can mean
Browsers treat different visual elements differently. A photograph embedded in the article, a CSS background, an advertisement, a cookie banner, and a site logo are not always controlled by the same setting. The comparison below reflects what each documented browser control is designed to remove.
| Browser method | What it can remove | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Firefox Simplified format | Clutter such as buttons, ads, and background images | Available only on pages that support it; it is not a guarantee that every image disappears |
| Chrome Reading mode with Images off | Images in the reading view | Applies only to Reading mode, not the ordinary webpage; some page types are unsupported |
| Edge Background graphics off | Webpage background graphics | Does not promise removal of ordinary inline images |
These controls are not interchangeable. “Background graphics” does not mean “all images,” and a reading view may omit more than pictures, including interactive controls or navigation. Use the preview to confirm that the text, headings, links, and any essential diagrams survived.
Firefox: print with Simplified format
Firefox has the clearest built-in workflow for a cleaner, text-focused printout.

- Open the Firefox menu and select Print.
- Expand More settings in the print dialog.
- Under Format, choose Simplified, if it is offered.
- Check the preview. Choose your paper size, scale, margins, pages per sheet, duplex setting, and headers or footers as needed.
- Select your printer, or choose the PDF option to save a file.
Mozilla describes Simplified format as stripping clutter such as buttons, advertisements, and background images. It does not promise that every page image is removed, so inspect the preview before committing to paper. Firefox pages can also define print-specific layouts that look different from the screen.

If Simplified is missing
A missing Format control generally means the page does not provide a simplified version, or that Reader View is already active. Look for the Reader View icon in the address bar, open it, and then print. Reader View can change the page’s content and order; verify the resulting preview rather than assuming it contains everything from the original.
Firefox’s printing instructions are documented in Mozilla’s Firefox print help and its Simplified-pages guide.
Chrome: turn off images in Reading mode
Chrome’s image switch belongs to Reading mode. It does not modify the normal webpage, so opening the print dialog directly on the original page will not apply this setting.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open a compatible article in Chrome on your computer.
- Open Reading mode using Chrome’s reading-mode control.
- In the Reading mode settings, set Images to Off.
- Read through the resulting text view and make sure required content is present.
- Open Chrome’s print dialog with Ctrl+P on Windows or Linux, or Command+P on Mac.
- Choose a printer or Save to PDF, adjust print settings, and compare the preview with your needs.
Google says Reading mode is not compatible with every site or format. Image galleries, interactive maps, forms, quizzes, payment pages, and login screens may not work as expected. If the article is truncated or an important table is absent, return to the original page and use another method instead of printing an incomplete reading view.

Edge: remove background graphics, then check inline pictures
- Open the webpage in Microsoft Edge.
- Open the print dialog.
- Expand More settings.
- Leave Background graphics unchecked.
- Review the preview and print or save as PDF.
Microsoft documents this setting as excluding page background graphics when it is unchecked. It does not claim to remove images placed in the page content, such as an article photo or product image. Edge also describes a clutter-free print option that can remove surrounding material such as ads and navigation. Its presence can depend on the Edge version or rollout, so use it when available and verify the preview.
Instructions are in Microsoft’s Edge printing help.
When the browser option does not remove every picture
Use the page’s own print or reader view
Many news, documentation, and blog sites provide a printer icon, “Reader view,” or “Print article” link. Open that version before invoking the browser’s print dialog. It may preserve headings and code while removing advertising and decorative media, but it can also omit comments, embedded tools, or navigation.

Print selected text
If you need only a passage, select the text, copy it into a plain document, and print that document. This is the most predictable way to exclude all webpage imagery, but you must check that links, lists, tables, and code formatting remain understandable after copying.
Save a text-focused PDF first
Saving from the cleaned view lets you inspect the file and share it before using paper. Open the PDF and confirm page breaks, headings, and any required figures. A PDF created from the original page can still contain images even when they are not visible in the browser preview.
Print-preview checklist
- Confirm that the article title and all required sections appear.
- Check whether an essential chart, warning diagram, or code sample was removed.
- Look for blank pages caused by large elements or broken page breaks.
- Set scale and margins so lines do not run off the paper.
- Disable backgrounds if you are trying to reduce decorative ink, but do not confuse that with removing inline images.
- For long pages, verify the first, middle, and final pages rather than checking only page one.
Preview is the practical test because websites can use a different print stylesheet from their on-screen layout. The same page can therefore produce different output in Firefox, Chrome, and Edge.

Troubleshooting common results
Images still appear in Firefox
Simplified format may remove clutter and background images while retaining content images. If the pictures are not essential, try Reader View when available, then preview again. If the page has no supported simplified view, copy the needed text into a document.

Chrome has no Reading mode or the page will not open in it
Reading mode is conditional and does not support every site format. Galleries, maps, forms, quizzes, payment pages, and login screens are common problem cases. Print the original page with images, use the site’s printer view, or move the text into a plain document.
Edge removed the background but not the photos
That is expected: Background graphics controls backgrounds. Use a clutter-free or reader view if Edge offers one, or use a site-provided print version.
The preview is missing text
The simplified or reading view may have excluded an interactive component, comments, or content loaded only after an action. Return to the original page, allow it to finish loading, and compare the two views. Do not print until the preview contains the information you need.
The printed page looks unlike the screen
Print stylesheets can intentionally rearrange or hide elements. Treat the print preview—not the browser window—as the authoritative result. Adjust scale, margins, orientation, and page range there.

It accepts consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be disabled. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Frequently Asked Questions
Will turning off background graphics remove a website’s photos?
No. Background graphics are a separate category from inline images placed in article or page content.
Can I print a Chrome Reading mode page without changing the original website?
Yes. The Images setting applies inside Reading mode only; it does not alter the ordinary webpage.
Why is a simplified or reading view unavailable?
The page may not support that browser’s simplified format, or its content type—such as a map, gallery, form, quiz, payment page, or login screen—may be incompatible.
