To capture an entire webpage as one tall image, use your browser’s full-page screenshot command. Firefox calls it Save full page, Edge calls it Capture full page, and Chrome provides a full-page option through DevTools. If you need a document that can be paginated and printed on paper, use the browser’s print dialog and choose a PDF destination instead. A screenshot image and a printed PDF are different outputs.
Choose the result you actually need
- Full-page screenshot: a visual image of the rendered webpage, including content below the visible viewport. Use PNG, JPEG or WebP when you need to share or archive the page’s appearance.
- Print or PDF: a document generated through print settings. It can paginate, apply margins and orientation, and omit or rearrange screen-only elements.
- Visible-area screenshot: only what is currently on screen. A normal desktop screenshot does not include content below the fold.
Dynamic pages can produce different captures depending on loading state, animation, browser version and device. Review the result before treating it as a complete record.
Firefox: save the whole webpage as an image
- Right-click an empty area of the page and select Take Screenshot. You can also press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
- Choose Save full page. This includes content outside the current viewport. Choose Save visible only when you want the portion currently on screen.
- Use the controls in the screenshot interface to download the image or copy it, depending on the options shown in your Firefox version.
Mozilla documents both visible and full-page captures in its Firefox screenshot help. Menu names can change, so use the toolbar customization screen if you want to add a screenshot button to the Firefox toolbar.
Microsoft Edge: capture a full page
- Press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows, or open Screenshot from the page’s right-click menu or Edge settings menu.
- Select Capture full page.
- Inspect the result, then copy it or save it to a file. Edge can also capture a selected area.
Edge’s tool is intended to capture content extending beyond the screen, including long or moving webpages. Availability and behavior can vary by device type, market and browser version; if the command is missing, update Edge or use its settings menu. Chrome: use DevTools for a full-page capture
Chrome’s technical route captures a complete DOM node, including content below the fold.
- Open the page in Chrome and press F12 or Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows/Linux. On macOS, press Command+Option+I.
- In DevTools, open the Elements panel.
- Right-click the element representing the page (often the
<body>or a main container) and choose Capture node screenshot. - Chrome downloads an image of that node. Check that the selected node contains all the content you need.
Chrome for Developers explains the Capture node screenshot workflow. The Command Menu’s Capture area screenshot command is for a user-selected region, not a full-page capture.
Headless Chrome for technical users
For repeatable command-line work, Chrome Headless supports --screenshot, a configurable --window-size and --timeout. Use --print-to-pdf as a separate route when the desired output is a PDF. These flags are documented in the Chrome Headless reference; they are more setup than most one-off captures require.
When “print” means PDF instead of an image
- Open the browser print dialog with Ctrl+P on Windows or Command+P on macOS.
- In Edge, you can also open Settings and more > Print.
- Choose a PDF destination, then set the paper size, orientation, margins, scale and page range as needed.
- Preview every page before saving. Headers, footers, backgrounds and page breaks can change the appearance substantially.
Printing uses the page’s print stylesheet, so it may hide navigation, alter colors or split a long section across pages. If a page is cluttered, Microsoft suggests trying Immersive Reader as a print workaround where that feature is available; it is not supported on every website. Make a full-page capture reliable
Wait for content to finish loading
Scroll through the page once before capturing if it uses lazy-loaded images. Keep the tab open until fonts, images and embedded content have settled. A screenshot tool can otherwise record placeholders or a partially populated page.
Control moving content
Pause videos, carousels and animated banners when possible. Moving content can be captured at different frames, and some browsers handle long or moving pages differently. If an overlay blocks the page, close it before starting the capture.
Check the boundaries
After saving, inspect the top, bottom and any sticky sidebars. A selected Chrome node may exclude content outside that node. Firefox and Edge full-page modes generally target the document, but page-specific scripts can still affect the result.
Choose an appropriate format
- PNG: sharp text and interface graphics, usually larger files.
- JPEG: smaller files for photographic pages, with lossy compression.
- WebP: efficient size and quality where the recipient’s software supports it.
- PDF: preferable when readers need page numbers, selectable text or paper output rather than one extremely tall image.
Common problems and fixes
The full-page option is missing
In Firefox, use the right-click menu or the documented shortcut rather than looking for a permanent toolbar icon. In Edge, open Screenshot from the right-click or settings menu; availability can vary by device, market and version. In Chrome, open DevTools and select a page-containing node.

The site may load content only after scrolling, or the capture timed out while scripts were running. Scroll through the page first, wait for images, disable extensions that block page scripts, and try again. For a very long page, capture logical sections if a single image becomes unwieldy.
Images or fonts are missing
Wait for network activity to stop, reload without a restrictive extension, and verify that the assets load normally in the tab. Cross-origin embeds, blocked requests and consent gates can prevent assets from appearing in the capture.

Close the overlay before capturing. If it returns on every load, adjust the site’s consent choice or use an automated service that can dismiss known overlays before rendering.
The PDF layout is wrong
Use print preview to change orientation, scale, margins, paper size and background graphics. A PDF follows print CSS rather than the screen layout, so a screenshot is the better choice when visual fidelity is the priority.
The file is too large to share
Crop unnecessary whitespace, resize the image, or export a PDF. A tall full-page bitmap can be expensive for browsers and image viewers to decode; splitting it into sections may be more practical for review.

Can I take a full-page screenshot on Safari?
Safari-specific steps are not covered here because the available official guidance does not establish a current, consistent image-capture workflow. Use a verified browser route such as Firefox, Edge or Chrome DevTools when you need a documented method.

Does a full-page screenshot include content hidden behind a click?
Only content rendered and included in the captured document or node is captured. Expand accordions, tabs or menus first, or use an automation option that clicks the element before capture.
Is a PDF better than a screenshot for accessibility?
It depends on how the PDF is generated and tagged. A screenshot is a bitmap and does not provide selectable text by itself; a properly generated document is usually more suitable for text search and printing.
Why are two captures of the same URL different?
Page scripts, lazy loading, animations, consent state, viewport, browser version and network timing can change the rendered page. Stabilize those conditions or use explicit waits and settings in an automated workflow.
