A dehumidifier can help prevent mould by lowering indoor humidity, but it cannot fix a leak, repair a building defect or replace ventilation. The most effective approach is to remove moisture at its source, ventilate rooms where it is produced, dry damp materials quickly and reduce persistent cold surfaces.
How a dehumidifier helps—and what it cannot do
Showering, cooking and drying laundry release moisture indoors. If it is not vented or otherwise removed, humidity can build up and water vapour can condense on colder surfaces such as windows, external walls and pipes. Damp conditions can support mould growth.
A dehumidifier removes moisture from indoor air and can help when humidity stays high. Use it as one part of a broader plan: it does not stop water entering through a roof or plumbing leak, correct defective construction, or make a broken extractor fan work. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) identifies dehumidifiers and air conditioners as options for humidity control, alongside addressing moisture problems.
Keep indoor humidity under control
The EPA advises keeping indoor relative humidity below 60% where possible, ideally between 30% and 50% if feasible. These are practical guidelines for reducing mould risk, not a guarantee that mould will not occur. A humidity meter, also called a hygrometer, can help you track relative humidity; a reading alone does not identify why a room is damp.

If humidity remains high despite ordinary ventilation and moisture-control measures, a dehumidifier may help bring it down. Follow the unit’s instructions for placement, drainage and operation. The available guidance does not establish a suitable capacity or model for every room, or current running costs.
Reduce moisture where it is produced
Bathrooms
Run the extractor fan during and after bathing, and keep it clean and operational. Wipe visible condensation from surfaces and leave the room ventilated so moisture can escape rather than spreading through the home.

Kitchens
Use the extractor fan when cooking and keep it maintained. Venting moisture at the point where it is produced can reduce the amount left in indoor air for a dehumidifier to handle.
Background ventilation
Where fitted, keep trickle vents open and unblocked. UK government guidance for existing homes in England advises this and recommends regularly cleaning kitchen and bathroom extractor fans. Ventilation arrangements differ by property, so consider ventilation alongside any energy-efficiency work: sealing a home more tightly without accounting for air exchange can reduce ventilation.

Dry condensation and damp materials promptly
Wipe condensation from windows, walls or other surfaces and look for a repeating pattern. Check whether it appears after showers or cooking, is concentrated on cold surfaces, or persists in one location. The pattern can help guide what to investigate, but it is not by itself a diagnosis.
After a leak or spill, remove the water and dry wet or damp materials as soon as possible. The EPA says that in most cases mould will not grow when materials are dried within 24–48 hours. If materials remain damp, or water has reached concealed areas, the moisture source and extent of the problem may need further attention.

Find the cause when damp or mould returns
If mould comes back after cleaning, do not rely on repeated surface cleaning or a dehumidifier alone. Look for an unresolved source such as a plumbing or roof leak, water ingress, insufficient ventilation, poor heating or a building deficiency. The appropriate fix depends on the property and the cause; recurring damp may require investigation and repairs rather than simply lowering humidity.
- Moisture source: distinguish a continuing leak or water ingress from everyday moisture produced indoors.
- Air exchange: check whether bathroom and kitchen extraction works and whether available background vents are clear.
- Cold surfaces: note whether condensation forms repeatedly on windows, external walls or pipes.
- Suitable intervention: the answer may involve repairing a source, improving ventilation, changing heating or insulation, using a dehumidifier, or a combination.
EPA humidity and drying guidance is US guidance; the ventilation advice above is specific to England. Local climate, building conditions and ventilation systems vary, so this general advice cannot diagnose a particular property.
