To preserve a PC game for offline play, save more than its installed folder: keep its installer or supported storefront backup, required patches and DLC, saves, configuration, dependencies, and notes about how it was installed. Then restore the archive and launch the game with the network disconnected. GOG’s offline installers can be used without its client for supported games; Steam’s backup feature is convenient but remains client- and title-dependent. Neither method can preserve a game’s servers or guarantee that it will run on future operating systems.

What should a PC game backup contain?

A complete preservation set should let you reconstruct the version you care about, not merely put a copy of today’s installed files somewhere safe. Before collecting anything, identify the exact edition, language, patch level, DLC, and save locations. Those details determine which files you need and help explain differences if you later restore the game.

Use a clearly named folder for each game and keep these items together where possible:

  • Installer or supported storefront backup: This is the starting point for reinstalling. A copied game directory may depend on files or installation steps that are not in the directory.
  • Patch files: Save the patches needed to reach the version you want, including any relevant notes about their order. A current installer may not reproduce an older version after a game has been updated.
  • DLC, language files, and extras: Check whether these are separate downloads. For GOG, the account page may list separate DLC, language files, or extras in addition to the offline game installer.
  • Saves and configuration: Record where these files live and copy them separately when the storefront backup does not include them. Steam warns that some custom files and saves may need separate copying.
  • Mods and custom files: Preserve them separately from a clean copy of the original game. This makes it possible to distinguish the original installation from a modified one and to restore either version.
  • Dependencies and setup notes: Record required DirectX or Visual C++ redistributables, product keys, launcher requirements, compatibility settings, and the last operating system on which you know the game worked.

Keep a short text file in the archive with the game’s edition, language, patch level, included DLC, the date you collected it, and any steps needed to install or launch it. If you know a particular setting or dependency was necessary, write down what it was and how you determined it. Such notes can be more useful than a folder full of unexplained files when you return to the archive years later.

Which preservation method should you use?

Use the game’s available offline installer when you need to install without relying on a storefront client. Use Steam’s built-in backup for a convenient Steam-managed copy, but treat it as a client-dependent backup rather than a standalone installer. Either method still needs a separate check for saves, custom files, dependencies, and online-only features.

Method What it provides What to check Offline and storefront dependence
GOG offline installer Offline setup files downloaded from the account page using “DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS.” Download every required setup part. Check separately for DLC, language files, and extras; preserve all needed parts together. Designed for standalone installation of supported games without Galaxy. The game or particular features may still have other requirements.
Steam Backup A backup created from the installed game through its Steam library properties. Steam says some custom files and saves are not included. Some games that use third-party installers or downloaders are excluded from this backup route. Client-dependent, and support varies by title. Steam Offline Mode does not work for games that require an active connection and may not work for some external-launcher titles.
Copied installed folder alone A copy of files in the game’s installation directory. It may omit installer data, saves, configuration, dependencies, patches, or other files needed to reproduce the installation. Do not assume it is a complete reinstall set or that it will launch independently of the original client or services.

How do I download a GOG game for offline installation?

For a supported GOG game, download its offline backup installers from your account page and keep every required setup part together. This is the most direct route in this comparison when you want to reinstall without Galaxy.

  1. Open the game’s entry in your GOG account and choose “DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS.”
  2. Download every setup part listed for the game. If the game is divided into multiple parts, keep all of them in the same clearly named folder; do not archive just the first file.
  3. Check the account page for separate DLC, language files, and extras that matter to the edition you want to preserve. Save those files alongside the installer, with names that make their purpose clear.
  4. Record the game edition, language, and any version or patch information available to you. Keep any separate patch files and notes about their installation order with the archive.
  5. Restore the files to a separate directory or spare computer, disconnect the network, install the setup parts in order, and test whether the game starts and can save and reload.

GOG’s developer documentation describes its publishing principle as “DRM-free is a MUST, copy protection is a NO,” and uses the phrase “No DRM, No Problem.” That principle is useful context, but do not turn it into a guarantee about every game feature: check the title itself for any launcher, account, or online-service requirement, and test the functions you care about.

How do I use Steam Backup, and what does it leave out?

Steam’s built-in backup is a practical way to make a Steam-managed copy of a supported installed game. It is not a universal export of every file associated with a game, and the backup remains tied to Steam and title-specific support.

WD 2TB My Passport, Portable External Hard Drive, Black, backup software with defense against ransomware, and password protection, USB 3.1/USB 3.0 compatible - WDBYVG0020BBK-WESN
  • Slim durable design to help take your important files with you
  • Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more
  • Back up smarter with included device management software[2] with defense against ransomware
  • Help secure your important files with password protection and hardware encryption
  • 3-year limited warranty
  1. In Steam, open Library, right-click the game, and choose Properties.
  2. Open Installed Files, then choose Backup game files.
  3. Follow Steam’s prompts to create the backup set. Move it to separate storage or burn it to recordable discs if that suits your archive plan.
  4. Copy saves, configuration, mods, and other custom files separately if they are not included. Note where each came from and whether it belongs to the clean game or a modified setup.
  5. Restore the backup through Steam on a separate directory or spare computer, then test the restored game while disconnected from the network.

Steam Support explicitly recommends testing backup discs after creation “to ensure the integrity of the files for future reinstallation.” A backup that has never been restored is an unverified copy, not proof that you can reinstall or play the title.

Not every game is supported by Steam Backup. Steam excludes some games that use third-party installers or downloaders. A title may also rely on an external launcher or require an active connection, so a Steam backup and Steam Offline Mode do not necessarily provide a way to install and play it offline. Check the particular game instead of assuming that the store’s general backup or offline feature covers every title.

How can I tell whether a game will work offline?

Test the installation and the specific functions you need with the network disconnected. A game that reaches its title screen offline may still have online-dependent multiplayer, cloud saves, leaderboards, or other features that cannot be preserved in a local archive.

Use a restore test rather than simply disconnecting your usual installation. A fresh restore can reveal missing setup files, launcher dependencies, or custom data that your existing computer already has. For a useful test, start from the saved installer or backup and use a separate directory or spare computer, so the test does not overwrite your working copy.

  1. Disconnect the computer from the network before beginning the test.
  2. Install the archived game and any required setup parts in their intended order. Apply saved patches and DLC as needed.
  3. Set up the recorded dependencies and compatibility settings. If a product key or launcher is required, note exactly when that requirement appears.
  4. Launch the game and try the offline activities you actually want to retain. A successful launch alone does not prove every mode or feature works.
  5. Create a save, quit the game, and relaunch it while still disconnected. This checks that the game can persist progress locally, not just start once.
  6. Record errors, missing features, and any changes needed to complete the test. Update the archive notes rather than silently modifying your only clean copy.

Steam’s Offline Mode is not a workaround for a game that requires an active connection. It can also fail for some titles that depend on an external launcher. If the game’s essential startup or activation path is online-only, a local copy of its files cannot remove that requirement.

How should I store and verify the archive?

Keep at least two copies on separate storage media, and retain a clean original archive alongside any copy you modify for compatibility. The point of separate copies is to avoid making one damaged, overwritten, or compatibility-altered set your only surviving version.

  • Use separate media: An external hard drive is a practical working copy. Recordable optical media can provide an additional offline copy; Steam documents moving or burning its backup files.
  • Keep the original intact: Make compatibility changes to a separate copy. Preserve the original installer or backup as collected, especially if you apply unofficial patches or alter configuration.
  • Record checksums or hashes: Store the values with the archive so you can detect whether a file changed or became corrupted. A matching hash can show that a file is unchanged from the copy you checked; it does not prove that the installer is complete or that the game will run.
  • Test restores: Restore and launch the game offline, then record the result and any issues. Repeat the test when you make a meaningful change to the archive or discover that a dependency has changed.
  • Label clearly: Identify the game, edition, language, patch level, DLC, date collected, and whether the copy is original or modified. Keep installation instructions and dependency notes with it.

Steam’s backup guidance recommends testing the backup after creation, and The Strong National Museum of Play’s Digital Preservation Handbook recommends offline testing as part of preservation practice. A successful test establishes what worked in that test environment; it cannot establish that the same game will run on every future computer.

What can an archive preserve, and what can it not preserve?

An archive preserves files and documentation that you collected. It cannot preserve a server, account service, online-only activation, or a feature that depends on a service continuing to operate. Even a complete offline installer does not turn online multiplayer or cloud services into local features.

  • Important Notes for PS/Xbox Gaming Devices: You can play last-gen games (PS4 / Xbox One) directly from an external hard drive. However, to play current-gen games (PS5 / Xbox Series X|S), you must copy them to the console's internal SSD first. The external drive is great for keeping your library on hand, but it can't run the new games.

Frequent updates create a different limitation: one archive may represent one historical version rather than every version a game has had. If a particular version matters, record its patch level and keep the corresponding installer and patch files where available. Do not assume that a future storefront download will reproduce the same files or version.

Operating-system changes are another uncertainty. Recording the last known working operating system and compatibility settings gives you a useful baseline, but does not guarantee compatibility with a later system. Preserve the clean archive separately from any modified copy so future troubleshooting can start from known original files.

What legal limits should I keep in mind?

Preserve only files you lawfully acquired and follow the applicable licence and law in your jurisdiction. Keeping a backup does not grant permission to redistribute it, nor does it authorize bypassing an activation mechanism. If a game requires an online service or account for a feature, preserving local files does not replace that service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a GOG offline installer mean every part of the game is DRM-free?

No. GOG’s developer documentation states a DRM-free publishing principle, but that should not be read as a promise that every feature of every title works without an account, launcher, or connection. Check the requirements for the particular game and verify the offline functions you intend to use.

Can I preserve a game if its store listing disappears?

A local archive can retain the files you already obtained, but it cannot restore a storefront account, download entitlement, or online activation service that is no longer available. Preserve the files and installation notes while you still have lawful access, and do not assume a later reinstall will be possible from the store.

Should I keep more than one version of a frequently updated game?

If a particular historical version matters to you, keep its installer or supported backup and the patch files needed for that version, when available. Label each version clearly so you do not mistake a newer archive for the one you intended to preserve.

Can I share my preserved installer with someone else?

A backup is not permission to redistribute a game. Follow the game’s licence and the law where you live; preserving files for your own reinstall and giving copies to others are different uses.
