Then review the update in Settings > General > Software Update and install when you are ready. Apple’s current guidance covers iOS 27; supported models and available versions depend on the release, so check Apple’s live information for your device.
Will your iPhone get the update?
Compatibility depends on the iPhone model and the specific iOS release. Apple says Software Update shows only updates compatible with your device. Open Settings > General > Software Update to see the installed version and whether an update is offered.
For iOS 27, Apple’s release-specific compatibility list includes iPhone 11 and later, including iPhone SE (2nd generation and later). Check that page again before updating: a compatibility list for one release is not a guarantee about future versions. Apple also advises installing an earlier update first if needed.
Back up your iPhone and confirm it finished
Make a fresh backup before installing. Apple supports backing up to iCloud or to a computer; choose a method you can complete before starting the update.

Make an iCloud backup
- Connect your iPhone to Wi-Fi.
- Open Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup.
- Tap Back Up Now and stay connected to Wi-Fi until the backup completes.
- Check the last-backup date and time shown below the control.
If iCloud reports that there is not enough storage, follow the on-screen options or make a backup to a computer instead. Apple does not specify a universal amount of free space required for an iCloud backup. For automatic iCloud backups, Back Up This [Device] must be on, and the iPhone should be connected to power and Wi-Fi with its screen locked. See Apple’s iCloud backup instructions.
Back up to a computer
Apple also documents computer backups. The available software depends on the computer: use Finder on macOS Catalina or later, or iTunes on earlier macOS or Windows. Apple’s update instructions describe the computer options.

Prepare power and Wi-Fi
For a wireless update, connect the iPhone to a power source and a Wi-Fi network before you begin. A suitable charging cable is optional if you already have another appropriate way to power the phone. VPN or proxy connections can prevent the iPhone from contacting Apple’s update servers; if an update check fails, try again on a network without that obstacle.
Review the release details and install
Open Settings > General > Software Update. Review the offered version before proceeding. Tap More Details to see the version number and update details, then select Download and Install and follow the onscreen steps when you are ready.

You can also choose automatic updating. Apple says automatic installation is scheduled overnight when the iPhone is charging and connected to Wi-Fi, and you receive a notification before installation. With automatic download, the update downloads but you can install it later. The Apple update guide explains these options.
Apple’s iPhone User Guide says, “When you update to the latest version of iOS, your data and settings remain unchanged,” and still recommends backing up first. That is a general description, not a substitute for having a recoverable backup. Apple’s guidance does not provide a universal installation-time estimate or recommend that everyone install on the day of an Apple event.

If the update is missing or your iPhone needs space
The update does not appear
Check Software Update again after confirming your connection. If the update still does not appear, Apple says you can update using a computer: Finder on macOS Catalina or later, or iTunes on earlier macOS or Windows. Follow Apple’s computer update steps.
Your iPhone says more storage is needed
If prompted to temporarily remove apps, you can tap Continue; Apple says the removed apps are reinstalled automatically after installation. If you prefer not to do that, cancel and remove content manually before trying again. Apple’s reviewed instructions do not give one free-space figure that applies to every iOS update.
