Prepare for an AI-conducted interview as both a normal job interview and a technology test. First identify whether you will answer timed text, computer-generated voice, asynchronous video, live questions, or a mixed assessment. Then build evidence-based answers from your real experience, rehearse aloud with a timer, test the exact equipment and browser, and confirm the employer’s rules on live AI assistance, recording, retakes, data retention, human review and accommodations. Use AI to practise before the interview only when permitted; unless the invitation clearly authorizes it, do not use hidden prompting or generated answers while you are being assessed. You can also request an accessible alternative when the platform creates a disability-related barrier.
What is an AI-conducted job interview?
An AI-conducted interview uses software to ask questions, collect responses, analyze information or support a recruiter’s decision. “AI interview” does not describe one fixed format. In one employer’s process, the system may simply record your answers for a person to watch later; in another, it may rank or filter candidates, or run most of the assessment without a live interviewer.
| Format | What you may experience | Preparation implications |
|---|---|---|
| Timed text | Questions appear on screen and you type within a set period. | Practise concise written answers, check typing comfort and verify whether unanswered questions expire. |
| Computer-generated voice | A synthetic voice asks questions and records or transcribes your spoken reply. | Test speakers, microphone and volume; practise speaking clearly without relying on visual cues. |
| Asynchronous video | You receive a prompt, have a preparation window, then record an answer without a live interviewer. | Learn the retake and time limits, frame your camera correctly and rehearse looking at the lens naturally. |
| Live voice or video | Software conducts a real-time conversation, sometimes with adaptive follow-up questions. | Prepare to answer immediately and ask what human oversight exists if the system misunderstands you. |
| Technical or problem-solving task | The platform presents coding, data, case or reasoning problems in addition to interview questions. | Confirm permitted resources, time limits, scoring method and how you can report a technical fault. |
UK Government JobHelp notes that systems can combine standard, CV-based and adaptive questions and impose a fixed response time. Before you practise, find out exactly which combination your employer uses.

What should you confirm before preparing?
Read the invitation and assessment instructions line by line. If they do not answer a question, email the recruiter rather than guessing; rules vary by employer and by stage of the hiring process.

- Essential Phrases: Carefully selected flashcards feature common questions and advice to enhance your preparation and answers.
- Targeted Content: Curated by a career pathways and ESL instructor to help advanced language learners, as well as recent graduates and job seekers.
- Strategic Practice: Organized into 4 categories of relationship, knowledge, character, and leadership, allowing you to delve deep into each question and refine your responses.
- Insightful Guidance: The 8 tip cards such as the STAR method, along with what to ask the interviewer and more thoughtful ideas.
- Hiring Managers: Compact and portable, it provides a convenient resource to identify and draw out meaningful and honest responses.
- Is the assessment asynchronous video, live voice, text chat, a technical test or a mixture?
- How long do you have to prepare and answer each question?
- Are retakes, pauses or corrections allowed, and do they reduce your score?
- Does AI only capture a recording, or does it score, rank or reject responses?
- Will a person review the recording or an automated result before a decision?
- What information is evaluated: job-related competencies, written content, technical results or something else?
- How long will recordings, transcripts and other personal data be retained, and who can access them?
- Which browser, operating system, camera, microphone and internet connection are supported?
- What is the process for reporting a malfunction, requesting a review or challenging an assessment?
- What AI use is permitted for candidates, both during preparation and during the live assessment?
Canadian public-sector guidance says candidates should be told what methods and tools are used, how AI contributes to the decision, what assessment or feedback is produced and how to request an accommodation. Treat missing information as a reason to ask, not as permission to improvise.
How do you build strong, authentic answers?
AI systems may standardize prompts, but the strongest evidence still comes from your own work. Research the employer, role, products, customers and stated competencies, then create a one-page evidence sheet. Use several real examples rather than one story repeated for every question.
Use a Situation–Task–Action–Result structure
- Situation: Give the relevant context in one or two sentences.
- Task: State your responsibility or the outcome you were expected to achieve.
- Action: Explain what you personally did, including decisions, tools and collaboration.
- Result: Describe the measurable or observable outcome. If you do not know an exact metric, say so instead of inventing one.
Prepare evidence for an opening introduction, motivation for the role, teamwork, conflict, a failure or setback, customer service, problem solving and the job’s technical competencies. Keep the answer focused on your contribution; “we” is useful for context, but the assessor needs to understand what you did.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsLead with the answer
Start with the conclusion or decision, then supply the example. A direct opening such as “I reduced the handoff delay by redesigning the checklist” gives the listener a clear frame before the details. Pause for a moment before speaking instead of filling the timer with generic phrases.
Handle unknowns honestly
If you lack a required experience, explain the closest transferable example and the steps you would take to learn. Do not manufacture employers, metrics, qualifications or project outcomes. Misrepresenting a personal history can invalidate an application and conflicts with candidate guidance from LinkedIn, Anthropic and Civil Service Careers.

How can you practise with AI without breaking the rules?
Use an AI assistant before the assessment as a practice partner, not as a substitute for your thinking. Anthropic’s candidate guidance describes Claude as a collaborator for strengthening an application and preparing an authentic story. You can apply the same principle with any tool your employer permits.
- Paste the job description, removing confidential information and personal data that the tool does not need.
- Ask for likely competency, motivation, behavioural and role-specific questions.
- Answer aloud under the actual time limit. Do not silently draft a polished response that you cannot deliver naturally.
- Ask the tool to identify unclear structure, missing evidence, jargon or unsupported claims. Treat its suggestions as prompts for your own revision, not facts.
- Repeat with a different example and practise follow-up questions, including “What did you learn?” and “What would you do differently?”
The University of Manchester warns that relying on live AI assistance can distract you and produce generic or inaccurate answers. Prepare a small set of keywords or a permitted notes sheet instead of trying to read generated prose while speaking.
Can you use ChatGPT or another AI assistant during the interview?
Only when the employer explicitly authorizes that use. Preparation is commonly allowed; generating, paraphrasing or prompting live answers is commonly prohibited. Civil Service Careers states: “AI must not be used to produce responses during an interview.” Pennsylvania guidance also warns against unauthorized live AI assistance, recording or transcription and against using generative AI to answer live questions.
If the invitation is silent, assume that hidden answer generation, a second-person prompt displayed off camera, automatic transcription and recording are not allowed. Ask the recruiter a specific question before the interview: “May I use an AI assistant, transcription tool or notes during the assessment, and if so, for which parts?” Follow the stricter rule until you receive a clear answer. Never conceal AI use or present generated content as your own experience.
How should you set up your camera, microphone and room?
Test the exact interview link and hardware at least one day before the assessment and again shortly beforehand. A technically perfect setup cannot compensate for a platform that your browser or assistive technology does not support.
Rank #3
- Browser and link: Open the invitation in the supported browser, complete any system check and confirm that permissions allow camera and microphone access.
- Power and connection: Plug in the computer, close bandwidth-heavy applications and test the internet connection from the room you will use.
- Camera: Place it at eye level and frame your head and shoulders. Check that your face remains visible when you move naturally.
- Microphone: Record a sample and listen for echo, clipping, fan noise and delayed audio. A compatible USB webcam with a built-in microphone is optional, not mandatory.
- Lighting: Use front lighting that leaves your face clear. Avoid a bright window directly behind you.
- Background: Choose a quiet, uncluttered space. Disable notifications and tell others when you must not be interrupted.
- Backup: Keep the recruiter’s contact details, a charged phone and a backup connection or device ready. Know how to report a failure without leaving the assessment unexplained.
Simple equipment such as an LED or ring light can make lighting more consistent, but verify compatibility and accessibility before buying anything. Do not record or transcribe the interview unless every participant has consented and the employer permits it.
What should you wear and how should you present yourself?
Choose neutral, professional clothing that contrasts enough with the background for your face and shoulders to remain clear. Sit upright, look toward the camera when answering, and speak at a steady, understandable pace. These choices improve communication; they are not a guaranteed way to obtain a higher automated score.
Do not attempt to game an assessment by forcing eye contact, exaggerated facial expressions or a particular tone. Official guidance cautions that automated systems can be opaque, biased and difficult to validate, and no single mannerism reliably predicts job performance. Concentrate on relevant content, clear audio and a calm delivery.
How do you handle timed questions and adaptive follow-ups?
Use the first few seconds to identify what the question is actually asking. For a behavioural prompt, give the situation and task briefly, spend most of the time on your actions, and reserve a clear sentence for the result. For a technical prompt, state assumptions, outline your method, then explain the answer or next diagnostic step.
- If a preparation countdown is shown, jot three keywords rather than a full script.
- If the system cuts off answers at a fixed limit, practise stopping cleanly before the limit.
- If a follow-up question appears, answer that question directly instead of repeating your earlier story.
- If you do not understand a computer-generated voice, use the platform’s replay or text option if available; otherwise report the issue through the stated support route.
- If the platform provides no way to clarify an ambiguous prompt, state your interpretation before answering.
An adaptive system may change its next question based on your previous response. That does not mean every answer is being scored for personality or facial behaviour; ask the employer what is actually evaluated.
What accessibility support can you request?
Disability accommodation duties still apply when an employer uses an algorithmic hiring tool. The U.S. Department of Justice states: “The ADA applies to all parts of employment, including how an employer selects, tests, or promotes employees.” The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission says an alternative testing format may be required when an AI tool screens out an applicant because of a disability.
Contact the recruiter early and describe the functional barrier rather than disclosing more medical information than necessary. Depending on the situation, you might request:
- captions, a transcript or a text-based version of spoken prompts;
- screen-reader-compatible controls and keyboard navigation;
- additional preparation or response time;
- an alternative to video, speech or timed interaction;
- a human interviewer or human review of an automated result;
- permission to use an assistive technology that the standard platform blocks.
Ask how the accommodation will be documented and who can see your responses. If the employer cannot explain how to request support or challenge a disability-related result, ask for the escalation contact before starting the assessment.
How can you judge whether the process is transparent and fair?
You cannot determine fairness from a polished interface or an advertised “AI score.” UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology guidance says AI use should be signposted before deployment and that applicants need ways to contest decisions or obtain redress. Look for concrete information rather than assurances.
| Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| What role does AI play: recording, transcription, recommendation or rejection? | It tells you whether a human can correct an automated interpretation. |
| Which job-related criteria are assessed? | Relevant competencies are more defensible than unexplained personality or appearance measures. |
| Who reviews the result and can you request human reconsideration? | A review route is important when speech recognition or scoring is wrong. |
| How long are video, audio and transcripts retained? | Retention affects privacy and the risk of later reuse. |
| What accessibility and alternative-format options exist? | A nominally standard test can disadvantage candidates who use assistive technology. |
| How do you report an error or appeal a decision? | A clear route gives you a remedy if the platform fails or produces an inaccurate record. |
Australian Merit Protection Commissioner data from 2022 found that 15 of 66 surveyed Australian Public Service agencies—23%—reported using AI-assisted or automated recruitment tools in the previous 12 months. That figure describes the surveyed agencies and period; it is not a universal adoption rate or a prediction of your employer’s process.

What should you do if the platform fails?
Stay on the assessment page long enough to capture any error message, then use the employer’s stated support channel. Note the time, question number and action that failed. Do not repeatedly submit guesses if a technical problem could create duplicate or incomplete responses.
- Check power, browser permissions, microphone mute and internet connection.
- Use the approved backup device or phone connection if the invitation allows it.
- Contact the recruiter or platform support with the error details and a screenshot if permitted.
- Ask whether the attempt can be reset, extended or reviewed by a person.
- Keep confirmation of your report and any case number.
| Symptom | Immediate response | Follow-up request |
|---|---|---|
| No camera or microphone detected | Recheck browser permissions and reconnect the device. | Request a reset or alternative format if the device remains unsupported. |
| Audio is distorted or the synthetic voice is unintelligible | Switch to the permitted headset or text display. | Ask for the affected question to be repeated or reviewed by a person. |
| Answer timer starts unexpectedly | Stop and record the question number and time. | Request that the response window be restored or the attempt reopened. |
| Connection drops after submission | Reconnect once and avoid creating a second attempt without instructions. | Send the recruiter your timestamp and confirmation of what was submitted. |
What is the final day-of checklist?
- Read the invitation and candidate-AI policy again.
- Confirm the start time, time zone, assessment link and support contact.
- Run the platform check with the same browser, device, camera, microphone and headset you will use.
- Plug in power, silence notifications and place your evidence keywords where notes are permitted.
- Keep water nearby and remove anything that could create background noise.
- Have a phone or approved backup connection ready without using it to obtain unauthorized answers.
- Start early enough to resolve permissions or accessibility issues before the timer begins.
- After submission, save the confirmation screen or email.
Which mistakes most often weaken an AI interview?
- Assuming every AI interview is video: You may neglect typing practice or a technical task.
- Practising only scripted speeches: Adaptive follow-ups expose answers that do not reflect your real experience.
- Inventing precise results: Unsupported numbers damage credibility; qualify what you actually measured.
- Using hidden live assistance: It can violate the employer’s rules and distract you with generic or wrong text.
- Ignoring accessibility until the timer starts: Early requests give the employer time to provide an alternative.
- Optimizing for mannerisms: Eye contact, facial expression and tone are not reliable substitutes for job-related evidence.
- Failing to report a malfunction: A documented technical incident is easier to remedy than an unexplained incomplete attempt.
How should you think about success?
Your goal is not to guess an invisible score. It is to give truthful, relevant evidence in the format the employer selected, while confirming that the process is accessible, transparent and technically workable. Prepare with AI only within the stated rules, ask for human review or an alternative when the system creates a barrier, and use your own judgment when a tool’s output is generic or wrong.
Frequently Asked Questions
How early should I request an accommodation for an AI interview?
Contact the recruiter as soon as you receive the invitation, ideally before completing the platform’s system check. Early notice gives the employer time to arrange captions, extra time, a different response format or human review instead of making you disclose the barrier after a failed attempt.

Only if the employer’s instructions allow notes. Ask whether a keyword sheet is acceptable and keep it to prompts from your own experience rather than AI-generated prose that you would read verbatim.
What happens to my video and transcript after an AI interview?
Retention and access differ by employer and platform. Ask who receives the recording or transcript, how long it is kept, whether a vendor processes it, and how you can request correction or deletion where applicable.
Should I restart an answer if I stumble?
Follow the platform’s retake rule instead of restarting automatically. If retakes are not allowed, finish clearly and report a genuine technical or accessibility problem through the employer’s support route.
How can I tell whether a question is testing technical skill or communication?
The invitation should identify the assessed competencies or task type. When it does not, ask the recruiter; then answer by explaining both your method and your result rather than trying to infer an undisclosed scoring formula.
