You can play Xbox Cloud Gaming on a supported phone, TV, or Windows PC by signing in through the Xbox app or xbox.com/play, then choosing a game that supports cloud play. Most subscription games require Xbox Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate; selected free-to-play games, including Fortnite, can be played with a free Microsoft account in supported regions. Most games also need a compatible controller.

What do I need to play Xbox Cloud Gaming?

You need a supported device, an internet connection, a Microsoft account, and access to the game you want to stream. For subscription cloud titles, that means an active Xbox Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate subscription. Game availability, plan entitlements, and supported regions vary, so a subscription does not mean every game is available to stream in every location.

  • Device: Supported examples include Windows PCs, Android phones and tablets, iPhones and iPads, Xbox consoles, and select Samsung, LG, and Amazon smart TVs or streaming devices. Exact support depends on model, operating-system version, and region.
  • Game access: Use a Game Pass plan with cloud access for subscription titles. Selected free-to-play games can be started with a free Microsoft account in supported regions.
  • Input: Most games require a gamepad connected by Bluetooth or USB. Some titles offer touch controls, mouse, or keyboard support.
  • Internet: Xbox lists 10 Mbps download speed as a minimum. For a more stable connection, Xbox Wire recommends at least 20 Mbps; some devices need 20 Mbps for best quality.

How do I play Xbox Cloud Gaming on my phone?

On a supported Android or Apple mobile device, open a supported browser, go to xbox.com/play, sign in, and choose a cloud-enabled game. A controller is the most reliable input for games without touch controls.

Android phones and tablets

  1. Check that your Android device is running Android 12 or later.
  2. Open Microsoft Edge or Chrome and visit xbox.com/play.
  3. Sign in with the Microsoft account that has access to the game.
  4. Select a cloud-enabled game and start playing. Connect a compatible controller by Bluetooth or USB if the game does not support touch input.

iPhone and iPad

  1. Check that your iPhone is running iOS 14.4 or later, or your iPad is running iPadOS 14.4 or later.
  2. Open Safari or another supported browser and go to xbox.com/play.
  3. Sign in, choose a cloud-enabled game, and start it.
  4. For a more app-like shortcut in Safari, select Share → Add to Home Screen.

Fortnite is a documented exception to the usual paid-plan requirement: its official cloud-play option supports iPhone and iPad Safari with a free Microsoft account, where the service is available.

Can I play Xbox Cloud Gaming on my TV without an Xbox?

Yes. If you have a supported smart TV or streaming device, you can use its Xbox app, sign in, pair a compatible controller, and select a cloud-enabled game. The game streams to the TV, so a supported TV setup does not require an Xbox console.

  1. Check Xbox’s current device list for your exact TV or streaming-device model, software version, and region.
  2. Install or open the Xbox app on the supported device.
  3. Sign in with the account that has access to the game.
  4. Pair a compatible controller, then choose a cloud-enabled title.

Compatibility is model- and region-specific and can change. Confirm support for the exact device before relying on it; the fact that a TV is from a supported manufacturer does not establish that every model works.

What controller works with Xbox Cloud Gaming?

Most games need a gamepad connected to the device by Bluetooth or USB. Xbox lists Xbox controllers and verified third-party options from 8BitDo, GameSir, Backbone, and Sony DualSense; the right connection method depends on the controller and device.

Some games support touch controls, mouse, or keyboard, but support is title-specific. If a game starts but does not respond to your preferred input, check whether that particular title supports it and connect a gamepad if needed.

What internet speed do I need for Xbox Cloud Gaming?

Xbox gives 10 Mbps download speed as a minimum, while Xbox Wire recommends at least 20 Mbps for a stable cloud-gaming connection. Xbox also notes that some devices need 20 Mbps for best quality.

Guidance What it means
10 Mbps download Xbox FAQ minimum; meeting it does not guarantee the best experience on every device.
At least 20 Mbps Xbox Wire recommendation for a stable connection; Xbox says some devices need this speed for best quality.
Connection type Xbox Wire favors Ethernet, 5 GHz Wi-Fi, or 5G for cloud gaming.

Speed is only one part of a stable stream. If play is inconsistent, try Ethernet where available or move to a stronger 5 GHz Wi-Fi or 5G connection, then check whether the connection meets the recommended speed.

Which setup should I choose: phone, TV, or PC?

Choose based on where you want to play, what inputs your games support, and whether your exact device is compatible. All three routes depend on cloud-enabled titles and a suitable connection.

Device Best fit Route Key checks
Phone or tablet Portable play; selected phone games can use touch controls. Supported browser at xbox.com/play. Android 12 or later, or iOS/iPadOS 14.4 or later; controller support for titles without touch input.
Smart TV or streaming device Playing on a larger screen. Xbox app on a supported device. Exact model, software version, region, and a compatible paired controller.
Windows PC Choice of app or browser, with Ethernet available as a connection option. Xbox app or supported browser at xbox.com/play. Windows 10 version 20H2 or later; controller recommended for most games.

What should I check if a game will not start or play well?

Work through the likely causes in order: device compatibility, game and plan access, input support, then connection quality.

  • The game is missing: Check that it is cloud-enabled and that your account and subscription have access. Availability and plan entitlements vary by game and region.
  • The device or app is not supported: Recheck the operating-system requirement for a phone or PC. For a TV or streaming device, verify the exact model and software version against Xbox’s current device list.
  • The game starts but input does not work: Most games require a gamepad. Connect one over Bluetooth or USB unless the title supports touch, mouse, or keyboard.
  • The stream is unstable: Compare your download speed with Xbox’s 10 Mbps minimum and 20 Mbps recommendation. Try Ethernet, 5 GHz Wi-Fi, or 5G if available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Xbox Cloud Gaming download games onto my phone or PC?

No. Cloud Gaming streams supported games from Microsoft’s servers to your screen rather than requiring you to install the streamed game locally. You still need a supported device, account access to the title, and a working internet connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use mobile data for Xbox Cloud Gaming?

Xbox Wire lists 5G among the connection types it favors, so a 5G connection is an option where available. The published guidance is about connection quality; it does not specify how much mobile data a session consumes.

Why can I not find a particular game in cloud play?

A title may not be cloud-enabled, may not be included with your plan, or may not be available in your region. Check the game’s cloud availability and the entitlements for your account rather than assuming every Game Pass title can be streamed.
