If you want to play The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time today on a current Nintendo system, the original Nintendo 64 game is available through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack on Switch and Switch 2. If you want a separate modern release, Nintendo’s rebuilt Switch 2 edition is available to preorder, but it does not release until November 5, 2026. Other routes include a used Ocarina of Time 3D cartridge for 3DS-family hardware or original N64 and GameCube releases for collectors. These options differ in when you can play, which console you need, and whether you are paying for a recurring membership or a standalone copy.

| Nintendo 64 Classics | Playing the original today on a current Nintendo console | Original N64 game; requires an active Expansion Pack membership (Nintendo; Nintendo Support) | $49.99/year individual or $79.99/year family membership, up to eight accounts; Nintendo U.S. storefront snapshot (Nintendo) | Switch, Switch 2 | Oct 2026 |
| Switch 2 remake, physical or digital | A standalone modern edition | Rebuilt edition; release date November 5, 2026 (physical listing; digital listing) | $59.99 regular U.S. price in Nintendo’s 2026 storefront snapshot; preorder, not yet released (Nintendo) | Switch 2 | Oct 2026 |
| Used Ocarina of Time 3D cartridge | Portable play of the earlier remake | 3DS remake with remodeled graphics, touch-screen item management, gyro aiming, Master Quest and Boss Challenge (Nintendo) | Used-copy price not established by Nintendo | 3DS-family hardware | Oct 2026 |

| GameCube bonus disc | Collectors or players seeking Master Quest | Limited-edition disc includes Ocarina of Time and Ocarina of Time: Master Quest (Nintendo) | Used-copy price not established by Nintendo | Compatible GameCube disc-playing hardware | Oct 2026 |
Which way should you buy or play Ocarina of Time?
Choose based on whether you want immediate access, a permanent standalone edition, portability, or original hardware. A Nintendo Classics download gives access to a library rather than a separately purchased game; the new Switch 2 edition is a distinct release and is not playable before its launch.
- Play today on Switch or Switch 2: get Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack and download the Nintendo 64 Classics library.
- Buy a new standalone release: preorder the Switch 2 remake and wait for November 5, 2026. Pick physical or digital based on how you want to own and access it.
- Play a handheld remake: look for a legitimate used Ocarina of Time 3D cartridge and compatible 3DS-family system.
- Use original hardware or collect: look for an authentic N64 cartridge, or the GameCube bonus disc if Master Quest is part of the goal.
The routes are not interchangeable. In particular, the N64 Classics version is the original game delivered through a subscription library; the 3DS cartridge is an earlier remake; and the 2026 Switch 2 game is a newly rebuilt standalone edition.

Can I play Ocarina of Time on Switch without buying it?
You can play the original N64 version on Switch or Switch 2 without purchasing a separate game license, but access requires an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. The library app is downloadable; downloading it does not buy or permanently unlock Ocarina of Time.

Nintendo lists The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time in its Nintendo 64 Classics catalog. Nintendo’s support instructions cover both Switch and Switch 2: obtain the Nintendo 64 Classics library through the console’s Nintendo Switch Online area or eShop, then open it while signed in to an account with the required membership. The game runs as part of that library, not as an individual eShop purchase.
The service is a reasonable fit if you want to play now and may use other included Classics games. It is a poor fit if your main requirement is owning a standalone copy: the membership fee pays for service access, not a transferable or separately purchased Ocarina of Time license. Nintendo Support says it has no plans to offer the Classics games outside Nintendo Switch Online.
Is Ocarina of Time on regular Nintendo Switch Online?
Not in the basic Nintendo Switch Online tier. Nintendo places it in the Nintendo 64 Classics catalog that requires Expansion Pack. If your account has only the entry-level online plan, you must upgrade to Expansion Pack to launch this game through the current Switch service. The catalog app and the membership entitlement are separate steps: download the app, then make sure the account opening it has the correct active plan.
What does the Expansion Pack cost?
Nintendo’s U.S. online storefront showed the following annual membership prices in its 2026 snapshot. These are subscription prices, not the price of the game itself; check Nintendo’s current listing before subscribing.
| Membership | Published U.S. price | Coverage |
|---|---|---|
| Individual Expansion Pack | $49.99 per year | One Nintendo Account |
| Family Expansion Pack | $79.99 per year | Up to eight Nintendo Accounts |
Nintendo’s U.S. membership page is the source for these published figures. Because they are membership prices, compare the cost over the period you expect to play with a one-time purchase before deciding. A family plan can cover up to eight Nintendo Accounts, so households or groups that already share Nintendo’s service may find its cost easier to justify; it still does not turn the game into an individually owned download.
Can I play offline?
Nintendo Support says Nintendo Classics can be played offline for up to seven consecutive days before the console needs to reconnect for membership verification. Saved data remains on the console if the membership lapses and can be used again after membership renewal. That is different from owning a standalone game copy: access to the Classics library still depends on an active membership.
For travel, connect the console before leaving and remember that the seven-day period is consecutive. A long trip without a verification connection can interrupt access even though the app and save data are still installed. Reconnecting and restoring the required membership entitlement addresses the service requirement; it does not require buying the game separately.

Is the Nintendo 64 controller required?
No. Nintendo’s wireless Nintendo 64 controller is an optional accessory; it is not required to launch or play Nintendo 64 Classics. Nintendo says the controller pairs with Switch and Switch 2 and specifically mentions Ocarina of Time. Buying it does not include the game or an Expansion Pack membership. Nintendo also says a paid Switch Online membership is required to purchase the controller directly from its store, which ships it to the U.S. and Canada. See Nintendo’s controller listing for its current availability.
Use the standard Joy-Con, Pro Controller or another compatible gamepad if you do not want the extra purchase. The N64 controller is most useful when you want the original button layout and feel; it is an accessory decision, not a software or compatibility requirement.
Can I buy Ocarina of Time instead of subscribing?
Yes, but the standalone choices are different products. The Switch 2 remake is the current Nintendo-listed new purchase, while a used 3DS cartridge, N64 cartridge or GameCube bonus disc requires older hardware. Nintendo does not sell the N64 Classics version as an individual download, so purchasing the Classics app cannot replace the membership.
If you want a new copy that remains tied to one game rather than a service catalog, the Switch 2 physical or digital edition is the relevant route. If you need to play immediately, that edition is not an answer in the October 2026 snapshot because its November 5 release date has not arrived.
Should I preorder the Switch 2 remake?
Preorder the new Switch 2 edition if you want a modern standalone release and are willing to wait until November 5, 2026. Nintendo lists separate physical and digital editions, each for Switch 2; neither is the same product as the N64 Classics version.
Nintendo describes the remake as built from the ground up. Its announced changes include overhauled visuals, symphonic music, voice acting, expanded dialogue and scenes, and updated camera and movement controls. Melodies can be played with traditional button input or recognized from humming or an instrument near the Switch 2 microphone; there is no requirement to buy an ocarina accessory. Those features make this a different presentation of the game rather than simply the existing N64 release under a new name.
Physical or digital?
The physical edition is a cartridge-based standalone product. Nintendo says first-run physical copies have special textured-foil packaging while supplies last, so that packaging is a limited first-print feature, not a guaranteed attribute of every copy. Confirm the edition, seller, fulfillment and release timing on any retailer listing instead of assuming a third-party store has stock. Searching for “The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time Nintendo Switch 2 physical” helps distinguish the documented game from unrelated merchandise, but always verify that the listing names Switch 2 and the November 5 release.

The digital edition is also a standalone purchase, but requires space on the console. Nintendo’s listing gives an estimated download size of 27 GB and notes that the estimate may change before preorder. Check available storage before placing a digital preorder, and use Nintendo’s current product page for any revised download estimate. A digital preorder is not an immediate download of a playable game before release.

Treat this as the published price in that snapshot, not a promise about a later price or third-party listing. The physical product listing and digital product listing identify the respective editions and the November 5 release date.
Does the Zelda anniversary Switch 2 include the game?
No. Nintendo’s Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition Switch 2 listing explicitly says the game is not included. The themed system is not a game bundle, so a buyer still needs to obtain a compatible game separately. Check the system listing for its current package contents.
What happens if the release date or specifications change?
The November 5 date, $59.99 storefront figure and 27 GB download estimate are Nintendo’s October 2026 listings. Recheck the physical and digital product pages when ordering for the final U.S. price, file size, stock and launch status. Do not treat a preorder page as proof that the game is playable or that a retailer has a guaranteed shipment date.
Is Ocarina of Time 3D still available after the 3DS eShop closed?
The new-purchase route through the 3DS eShop is closed: Nintendo ended new 3DS and Wii U eShop purchases on March 27, 2023. A physical Ocarina of Time 3D cartridge is a separate used-copy route, provided you have compatible 3DS-family hardware.
Ocarina of Time 3D is the earlier 3DS remake, not the 2026 Switch 2 remake. Nintendo’s announcement for the packaged 3DS edition describes remodeled graphics, touch-screen item management and gyro aiming, plus Master Quest and Boss Challenge. That makes the cartridge appealing if you specifically want a handheld version or those extras. Nintendo’s cited packaged-edition announcement concerns Europe; it does not establish current U.S. stock, a used price, or the compatibility of every regional cartridge with every console.
When considering a used listing, confirm that it is a physical game cartridge, ask for clear photos and the stated region, and verify compatibility with the exact 3DS-family system you own. Check whether the seller is offering the game alone or a console bundle, and inspect the condition and completeness before paying. A search such as “Ocarina of Time 3D Nintendo 3DS cartridge” is more precise than searching for the Switch 2 remake. Nintendo says previous 3DS eShop purchasers may redownload purchased content and updates for the foreseeable future; it does not promise indefinite redownload access. That continued access applies to prior purchases, not to new eShop sales.

Can I buy the original N64 cartridge or Master Quest disc?
Yes, as used physical-media routes, but they require vintage hardware and careful condition checks. An authentic N64 cartridge with a suitable Nintendo 64 plays the original release; Nintendo also documents a limited-edition GameCube bonus disc that contains both Ocarina of Time and Ocarina of Time: Master Quest.
The GameCube disc is the more relevant collector choice if Master Quest is the main draw. The N64 cartridge is the direct original-hardware route. Neither format is a Switch or Switch 2 game card, and neither turns into a modern digital license by virtue of being owned. Search terms such as “Ocarina of Time Nintendo 64 cartridge” and “Ocarina of Time Master Quest GameCube bonus disc” identify the formats, but listings can mix games, manuals, bundles and reproduction items.

Nintendo’s documentation confirms that these releases existed, but it does not establish present-day resale prices, supply, completeness, or condition. Those depend on individual secondhand listings. For either option, check photographs of the actual item, whether packaging or inserts are included, the seller’s return terms, and the hardware needed to play it. Do not assume that a cartridge or disc listing includes a console or accessories. Avoid treating an unauthorized ROM download as an authorized substitute merely because you own a physical cartridge; this guide covers Nintendo-supported copies and legitimate secondhand media.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is the best choice for each kind of player?
The best route depends less on which game title appears on the box than on what kind of access you want. Use the following decision points before paying.
- Want to start today and already have Expansion Pack? Download Nintendo 64 Classics and use the original game included in the catalog.
- Want to start today but only have basic Switch Online? Nintendo’s catalog information places Ocarina of Time in the Expansion Pack tier, not the basic tier; upgrade if you want the current Switch route.
- Want to own a modern standalone release? Preorder the Switch 2 remake, but account for its November 5, 2026 release rather than expecting to play immediately.
- Want portable play and do not need the newest remake? Search for a used 3DS cartridge and confirm the exact console and cartridge compatibility with the seller.
- Want original-era hardware or a collectible edition? Consider the N64 cartridge for the original or the GameCube bonus disc for Master Quest; budget for the compatible hardware separately.
- Want the updated presentation but no physical cartridge? Choose the digital Switch 2 edition, reserve about 27 GB based on Nintendo’s estimate, and confirm the final size before downloading.
- Want a boxed item and the possibility of first-print packaging? Choose the physical Switch 2 edition, but remember that textured-foil packaging is only while supplies last.
- Unsure whether you want to commit? A current Classics membership gives access through a service, while a physical used copy or the Switch 2 release is a separate-product purchase. Compare the commitment you prefer rather than treating every option as the same edition.
Are there Ocarina-themed products that are not games?
Several announced or released products can appear in searches alongside the games, so identify them before buying. Nintendo lists LEGO Ocarina of Time – The Final Battle set 77093 as a 1,003-piece model kit; it is merchandise, not playable software. Nintendo also announced a HORI Electric OCARINA OF TIME for November 5, 2026 and describes it as an electronic toy, not a controller or a blow-played musical instrument. Neither product grants access to the game.
Nintendo has announced Young Link and Young Zelda amiibo for 2027, but the Young Link listing says the exact date has not been announced; a December 31, 2027 metadata date should not be treated as a confirmed launch. A Link & Epona LEGO set with 1,750 pieces and a 27-inch Hasbro Electronic Master Sword with more than 15 touch- and motion-activated sounds are announced for spring 2027. These are future products, not currently confirmed game bundles or substitutes for a console copy.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I buy Ocarina of Time as a standalone N64 Classics download?
Nintendo Support says there are no plans to sell games from the Nintendo Classics library outside Nintendo Switch Online. That statement concerns the Classics catalog; it does not apply to the separately sold Switch 2 remake.
Is Ocarina of Time included with basic Nintendo Switch Online?
No. The original N64 game is in the Nintendo 64 Classics catalog for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, not the basic membership tier.
Can I redownload a 3DS eShop game I bought before the shutdown?
Nintendo says previous purchasers can redownload purchased content and updates for the foreseeable future. The company has not guaranteed that redownload access will continue indefinitely.

Do I need to own an ocarina to play the Switch 2 remake?
No dedicated ocarina accessory is required. Nintendo says the remake supports button-based melody input and sound recognition using the Switch 2 microphone.
Does the Switch 2 remake release on the same day as this article’s October 2026 information?
No. Nintendo’s product listings give November 5, 2026 as the release date, so the remake remains a preorder rather than a playable release in the October 2026 snapshot.
Does the Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition Switch 2 include the game?
No. Nintendo’s system listing explicitly says the game is not included, so you must obtain a compatible game separately.
Can I play Nintendo 64 Classics without an internet connection?
Nintendo says offline play works for up to seven consecutive days before the console must reconnect for membership verification. An active Expansion Pack membership is still required.

For the quickest legal route, use Nintendo 64 Classics with an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership on Switch or Switch 2. For a standalone modern copy, preorder the physical or digital Switch 2 remake and wait for November 5, 2026.
