Yes—you can play Minecraft in VR on an HTC Vive or Vive Cosmos, but the dependable PC route in 2026 is Minecraft: Java Edition running through SteamVR with the version-matched Vivecraft mod. Vivecraft converts headset and controller tracking into mining, aiming, menus, movement, and combat, and it offers room-scale or seated play.

Mojang’s former Bedrock VR mode is no longer available on updated installations, so older tutorials that launch Bedrock with an OpenXR shortcut may fail. This guide walks through the Java-and-Vivecraft setup, hardware requirements, calibration, performance tuning, multiplayer limits, troubleshooting, and a standalone Quest alternative.

Can you still play Minecraft VR on an HTC Vive?

Yes. Use the original PC edition of Minecraft: Java Edition, the SteamVR runtime, and a Vivecraft release that matches your Minecraft version and mod loader. Vivecraft is designed for SteamVR-compatible headsets, including HTC Vive and Vive Cosmos, and maps your tracked hands and head to normal Minecraft actions.

The route matters because official Bedrock VR support for PC and PlayStation was discontinued. Current reporting identifies the 1.21.80 update in 2025 as the removal point. If a guide tells you to start a recent Bedrock installation with an old VR shortcut, treat that advice as obsolete rather than trying to force the shortcut to work.

Java Edition remains the practical Vive solution because Vivecraft is built for it. The Minecraft help documentation identifies Java Edition as the PC edition for Windows, macOS, and Linux; Vivecraft’s own documentation specifies the original PC Java Edition, not a console or mobile copy.

What do I need before installing Vivecraft?

You need four things: a purchased Java Edition license, a capable computer, a SteamVR-compatible headset and controllers, and a stable software combination. Check each item before downloading mods so that a hardware or edition mismatch does not look like a Vivecraft failure.

Minecraft: Java Edition

Launch Java Edition once from the official launcher before installing Vivecraft. The first launch creates the normal game files and confirms that the launcher can authenticate your account. Keep the ordinary profile available; a separate VR profile prevents experimental settings or mods from changing your non-VR game.

SteamVR-compatible hardware

Vivecraft’s compatibility documentation names HTC Vive and Vive Cosmos, along with Valve Index, Oculus Rift S, and Windows Mixed Reality headsets. Your headset must be detected by the PC VR runtime before Minecraft starts. Connect base stations, controllers, or a headset cable according to the hardware’s own instructions, then verify tracking in SteamVR.

A PC with headroom for VR

Minecraft’s published Java requirements are measured at 1080p, not at a headset’s per-eye resolution. They are a floor for ordinary play; VR rendering, long view distances, shaders, high-resolution texture packs, and large modpacks can require substantially more headroom.

Java target Display target Memory guidance Graphics guidance
Minimum 1080p at 30 FPS 8 GB with a discrete GPU, or 12 GB with integrated graphics A GPU capable of the minimum Java target
Recommended 1080p at 60 FPS 16 GB Graphics hardware in the 6 GB VRAM class

Those figures come from Minecraft’s current Java requirements guidance. For Vivecraft, regard the recommended row as a starting point rather than a promise of a particular headset frame rate. If you plan to use shaders or a demanding modpack, leave additional CPU and GPU capacity and be prepared to reduce render distance or visual effects.

Room or seating safety

Room-scale play needs a clear area without cables, pets, furniture edges, or other obstacles. A seated launch is a sensible first test for anyone new to VR: it lets you confirm tracking and controls before adding walking and turning. Never assume that a boundary drawn in SteamVR makes an unsafe room safe.

How do I install Minecraft VR with Vivecraft?

Install Vivecraft in an isolated launcher profile, match every version component exactly, and test a fresh world before adding other mods. The following sequence keeps the ordinary Minecraft installation intact and makes failures easier to diagnose.

  1. Launch Java Edition once. Sign in to the official Minecraft launcher, select Java Edition, and start the game until the title screen appears. Exit normally so the launcher creates its standard files.
  2. Check the Java requirements. Compare your computer with the published 1080p targets. Treat VR resolution and any shaders, high render distance, or modpack as extra load rather than assuming the minimum specification is sufficient.
  3. Install SteamVR. Install the PC VR runtime, connect the Vive or Vive Cosmos, and open SteamVR. Confirm that the headset, controllers, and tracking are shown as ready before launching Minecraft.
  4. Create a dedicated Minecraft installation. In the launcher, add a separate installation for Vivecraft and assign it a separate game directory. Keep your normal profile pointed at its existing directory so ordinary worlds and settings remain independent.
  5. Choose the exact Minecraft version. Select the Minecraft version supported by the Vivecraft build you intend to use. Do not treat adjacent Minecraft versions as interchangeable.
  6. Choose the required loader. Vivecraft documentation identifies the loader expected by each release. Match that loader exactly; a Fabric profile and a Forge profile are not substitutes simply because the Minecraft version number is the same.
  7. Install the matching Vivecraft file. Place the Vivecraft file for that Minecraft version and loader in the dedicated profile’s mods folder. Add only dependencies explicitly required by that Vivecraft release.
  8. Start the runtime first. Open SteamVR, wait for the headset and controllers to be recognized, and then launch the dedicated Vivecraft installation from the Minecraft launcher.
  9. Calibrate before exploring. Complete height calibration and choose standing or seated mode. Set handedness, turning style, movement speed, reach, and comfort options before entering a valuable save.
  10. Test a new world. Create a temporary world and check tracking, menus, mining, aiming, movement, and combat. Once the basic profile works, add other mods or visual effects one at a time.

If the launcher reports a missing class, loader error, or incompatible mod, return to the version and loader checks before changing graphics settings. Most first-launch failures are mismatched files rather than a defective headset.

How do I match Minecraft, the loader, and Vivecraft versions?

Think of a Vivecraft setup as a three-part lock: Minecraft version, mod loader, and Vivecraft build must all agree. Isolate that combination in its own profile and game directory so another installation cannot silently supply the wrong files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Read the Vivecraft release requirements

Start with the Vivecraft release you want to use and note the Minecraft version and loader it names. Select those same values in the launcher. Do not copy a Vivecraft file from a tutorial written for an earlier release merely because the screenshots look similar.

Keep the mods folder minimal

For the first launch, use Vivecraft and only dependencies that its documentation explicitly requires. Every additional mod introduces another compatibility variable. Once a clean profile works, add one mod, launch, and test; if the next launch fails, you have a clear candidate to remove.

Protect ordinary worlds

Use the separate game directory for VR saves and configuration while you are testing. Back up a world before opening it with a changed mod set. A world created with extra content may not behave the same way when opened in an unmodded profile, so do not use your only copy as a compatibility test.

How do I launch and calibrate Vivecraft for comfortable play?

Launch SteamVR before Vivecraft, then configure posture and movement while you are still in a safe, temporary world. Vivecraft supports room-scale and seated play, but comfort is personal; no single turning or locomotion setting is right for every player.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose seated or standing mode

Seated mode is a practical first launch and can be easier for players who experience motion discomfort. Standing or room-scale mode lets you physically reach and turn within the tracked area. Select the mode that matches your actual posture and play area rather than trying to compensate later with an incorrect height.

Calibrate height

Run Vivecraft’s height calibration while you are in your normal posture. A wrong value makes the world feel unnaturally tall or short and can put menus and blocks at awkward distances. Recalibrate after switching between seated and standing play.

Set handedness and reach

Choose whether the left or right controller is your dominant hand. Check that the hand you use for tools, aiming, and menu interaction feels natural. Reach settings affect how far away blocks and interfaces can be interacted with; use a conservative value if you find yourself stretching or if nearby objects feel too easy to grab.

Select a turning method

Vivecraft provides turning and comfort controls. New VR players often find a conservative turning style easier to tolerate than rapid continuous rotation. Test turning, movement speed, and any snap or comfort option in the temporary world, then change one setting at a time so you know which adjustment helped.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm the essentials

  • Look around and verify that the horizon remains stable.
  • Open and close the inventory and other menus without straining.
  • Point at a nearby block and confirm that the intended controller selects it.
  • Walk a short distance, stop, and check that movement ends when expected.
  • Mine, place, and aim at a harmless target before entering combat.

What performance settings should I change first?

Reduce the heaviest visual workloads before changing everything at once. VR magnifies stutter and latency, so a steady, comfortable experience is more valuable than a distant view or elaborate shader preset.

Start with render distance

Lower render distance if movement feels uneven or the headset view takes too long to update. Increase it gradually only after the base Vivecraft profile is stable. Long distances are especially expensive when combined with a busy world and high-resolution textures.

Leave shaders and large packs until last

Run the unmodified Vivecraft profile first. Add shaders, texture packs, and other visual enhancements incrementally. If performance drops immediately after one change, remove that change before adding another; this avoids guessing which component is responsible.

Watch for thermal or background load

Close unnecessary applications and check that the PC is not throttling under sustained load. A headset can remain connected while the game becomes inconsistent because of CPU, GPU, or memory pressure. The Java requirements’ 1080p frame-rate targets do not guarantee the same result at a headset’s resolution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I play Vivecraft in multiplayer?

Yes. Vivecraft documentation supports single-player, LAN, and server multiplayer, provided the client uses a compatible Java version and mod profile. Multiplayer does not make every server VR-aware, however.

Joining a Java server

Use the same Minecraft version and any server-required mods that the server administrator specifies. Keep your Vivecraft profile’s loader and game version aligned with that server’s requirements. If the server rejects the connection, read its version or mod mismatch message before changing headset settings.

What other players can see

Whether a server exposes visible VR body movement or other VR-specific behavior depends on server-side compatibility and features. Ask the administrator what is supported instead of assuming that every Java server displays the same head and hand information.

LAN testing

A local world is useful for checking the client profile with a friend before troubleshooting a public server. Test the clean Vivecraft profile first, then introduce additional client-side mods only if both players’ versions remain compatible.

What should I do when Vivecraft does not start or track correctly?

Separate software mismatches from headset-runtime problems by testing the PC VR environment independently. Work through the symptom that matches what you see.

The headset is not detected in SteamVR

Stop troubleshooting Minecraft. Check the headset connection, base-station or tracking setup, controller power, and SteamVR status until the runtime identifies the hardware. Vivecraft cannot provide tracking when SteamVR itself does not see the headset.

The launcher crashes or shows a mod error

Confirm the Minecraft version, loader, Vivecraft build, and dependencies against the release requirements. Remove every nonessential mod and launch the isolated profile again. If the clean profile works, re-add modifications individually.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The game opens in a flat window

Verify that SteamVR was already running and that you launched the dedicated Vivecraft installation rather than the normal Java profile. Check that the headset is active in the runtime before starting the game.

The view is too high, low, or offset

Run height calibration again in the posture you intend to use. Confirm seated versus standing mode and check your room-scale boundary. An incorrect posture selection can look like a tracking fault even when the headset and controllers are functioning.

Movement causes discomfort

Return to seated play or a smaller tracked area, reduce movement speed, and choose a more conservative turning option. Take a break when discomfort begins. Comfort controls are adjustable, but they cannot make every locomotion style suitable for every player.

A modded world behaves unexpectedly

Reproduce the issue in a new world with only Vivecraft and its required dependencies. If the new world works, the problem is likely tied to the save’s content or another mod. Restore a backup before experimenting with a different version or loader.

Can I play Minecraft VR without a gaming PC?

Not with the standard Vivecraft route: an HTC Vive or Vive Cosmos setup requires a PC and SteamVR. A standalone option exists for some Meta Quest headsets, but it is a separate project and not an official native Bedrock Quest release.

QuestCraft as a separate route

QuestCraft is an open-source standalone port of Minecraft: Java Edition for compatible Meta Quest headsets and uses Vivecraft. Its supported devices, authentication process, and Minecraft-version support can change, so follow the project’s current release instructions rather than applying Vive PC steps to a Quest.

Why this is different from Bedrock VR

QuestCraft should not be described as Mojang’s former Bedrock VR mode. The official Bedrock VR feature was removed from updated PC and PlayStation installations; QuestCraft is an independent Java-based port with its own requirements and maintenance cycle.

What changed in official Minecraft VR support?

Older PC and PlayStation Bedrock VR instructions no longer describe the supported product. The Bedrock VR removal associated with the 1.21.80 update in 2025 is why an OpenXR shortcut or legacy launcher argument may stop working after an update.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

For an HTC Vive on PC, the durable current plan is therefore Java Edition plus a matching Vivecraft profile. Keep the version-specific Vivecraft documentation available when you update Minecraft, because compatibility can change as the game, loader, and mod release move forward.

What is the safest setup order for a first session?

Use this short checklist immediately before entering a normal survival world.

  • Java Edition launches normally and your account is authenticated.
  • Your PC meets the published Java baseline with extra capacity for VR.
  • SteamVR detects the headset and controllers.
  • The Vivecraft profile has its own game directory.
  • Minecraft version, loader, Vivecraft build, and dependencies match.
  • The first launch uses no optional shaders or large modpack.
  • Height, handedness, seated or standing mode, turning, reach, and movement are calibrated.
  • A temporary world confirms menus, mining, aiming, movement, and combat.
  • Your valuable saves are backed up before opening them with a changed mod set.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Vivecraft replace the Minecraft Java Edition purchase?

No. Vivecraft is a mod, not a separate Minecraft license. You still need access to the original PC Java Edition and must sign in through the official launcher before creating the VR profile.

Can I launch Vivecraft if SteamVR is closed?

The Vivecraft route depends on the PC VR runtime, so start SteamVR and confirm the headset is detected first. If the runtime is unavailable, troubleshoot that connection before changing Minecraft files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does an old Bedrock VR shortcut stop working after an update?

The former Bedrock VR feature was removed from updated PC and PlayStation installations, with the change associated with update 1.21.80 in 2025. A legacy OpenXR argument cannot restore a feature that is no longer included.

Is QuestCraft an official Minecraft Quest edition?

No. QuestCraft is an open-source standalone Java port that uses Vivecraft for compatible Meta Quest headsets. Its authentication, device, and version requirements are maintained separately and may change.
