To play Microsoft Edge’s secret surfing game, open Edge, type edge://surf in the address bar, and press Enter. Choose a mode and start surfing. Microsoft describes the game as reminiscent of classic SkiFree—not as a remake—and says it can be played offline.
How to open the Edge Surf game
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Click or tap the address bar, enter
edge://surf, and press Enter. - Choose a mode from the game menu and begin playing.
Microsoft presents edge://surf as the direct way to start the game; its access instructions do not describe a separate download as necessary. See Microsoft Edge’s Surf feature page and Microsoft’s Surf game overview.
What makes it SkiFree-like?
Microsoft calls Edge Surf “reminiscent of the classic SkiFree.” The comparison is about the nostalgic feel of avoiding hazards while traveling through a course: SkiFree sent a skier down slopes past trees and an abominable snow monster, while Edge Surf puts a surfer on the water and includes obstacles and a Kraken. It is not described as an identical game or an official remake. Microsoft’s June 18, 2024 Learning Center article explains the comparison.
Choose one of the three modes
| Mode | Goal | How play works |
|---|---|---|
| Endless | Go as far as possible. | Avoid obstacles and the Kraken while trying to extend your run. |
| Time Trial | Finish the course quickly. | Microsoft says collecting coins can shorten your time. |
| Zig Zag | Pass through gates consecutively. | Missing a gate resets the streak; the run can continue until you run out of lives. |
Microsoft says each mode tracks a high score. Mode descriptions are available in its game overview and feature page.

#1 Best Overall
- VINTAGE TECH MEETS FRIENDLY COMPETITION: You're all racing to build a computer. Assemble illustrated hardware tiles — CPU, RAM, video card and more, like a jigsaw puzzle that changes every time you play. Be the first to install your software tile and win!
- SCAVENGE, STEAL AND SABOTAGE: Buy and sell as junkyard prices shift with supply and demand, steal parts before rivals lock them down, and attach pesky computer bugs to slow their build. Nobody's computer is safe until the software is installed.
- NO PRIOR COMPUTER KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED: Novices and tech whizzes can compete together. Easy to learn with real strategy underneath. Smart play makes you the favorite, but the dice keep every player in the hunt to the last roll.
- PREMIUM ILLUSTRATED COMPONENTS: Over 100 richly illustrated puzzle-fit hardware tiles, 4 chassis boards, JunkBucks coins, a 10-sided die, and a 2-minute timer — every illustration original artwork by the creator's daughter, in a family-designed game brought to life by 2,800+ Kickstarter backers. A standout gift for gamers and tech lovers alike.
- MADE FOR GAME NIGHT: Whether you grew up building PCs or have never opened one, the race to boot up first gets everyone leaning in — fast rounds, table talk, friendly sabotage. No screens, no downloads: just pull up chairs and play.
Controls and accessibility options
Microsoft’s June 18, 2024 walkthrough gives these keyboard controls:
- Left and right arrows: steer.
- Up arrow: accelerate.
- Down arrow: brake.
The current feature page lists keyboard and mouse, touch, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch Pro, and Xbox Adaptive Controller input. Microsoft also describes a reduced-speed option for a slower pace and a high-visibility mode. Available settings and inputs may depend on the version or device. See Microsoft’s feature page.
Quick Recap
If edge://surf does not open
- Confirm you are using Microsoft Edge. The address is an Edge game feature, not a general web address.
- Consider device, market, or browser-version differences. Microsoft notes that feature availability can vary by device, market, and browser version.
- Check whether the browser is managed by an organization. An administrator can disable Surf with the
AllowSurfGamepolicy. Microsoft says that disabling it blocks play both offline and by navigating toedge://surf. Details are in the Microsoft Edge AllowSurfGame policy documentation.
