The right home cockpit is the one that fits your games, controls, room, and appetite for building—not a universal frame marketed as “perfect.” Start by deciding whether you need dual sticks for space sims, a stick-and-throttle layout for flight, or a cockpit that can switch between both. Then size the seat and mounts around your reach and room before buying hardware.

Choose controls around the games you play

Control layout affects where the seat, mounts, and pedals must go. VIRPIL describes two common arrangements for space and flight simulation: HOSAS and HOTAS.

  • HOSAS means “Hands On Stick And Stick”: two sticks, often chosen for space-sim control.
  • HOTAS means “Hands On Throttle And Stick”: a throttle paired with a stick, a familiar flight-sim arrangement.
  • Yoke and throttle can suit the aircraft and games you want to simulate; rudder pedals are an optional addition in the VIRPIL guide.

These are alternatives, not a ranking. If you play several genres, decide which devices need to remain mounted and which should swing away, detach, or swap. A dual-stick setup may need two accessible stick positions; a HOTAS cockpit must also leave room for the throttle. Plan keyboard and mouse access too, especially if you use the same rig for other games.

Compare the three practical build approaches

There is no controlled comparison establishing that one cockpit approach is more rigid, comfortable, or effective than another. Choose based on how much fabrication you want to do, how often the setup changes, and what your space allows.

Approach Footprint and portability Cost and assembly Adjustability and compatibility
Desk-mounted starter setup Uses existing furniture, so the footprint depends on the desk and room. Moving it is relatively simple, but controls still depend on a suitable desk. Low construction effort; the cited guide gives no comparable current cost. Can be a practical first step, though it may provide fewer fixed positions than a dedicated frame. Check that the desk and control clamps suit your devices.
Custom DIY extrusion frame Can be designed for the available room; portability depends on the frame you build. Requires design, component selection, and assembly. A documented personal build used 40×40 mm extrusion, M12 bolts, and cube connectors, but these are that builder’s choices, not a validated universal plan. Can be tailored to flight and racing positions or other uses, but compatibility and rigidity depend on the actual design and hardware.
Dedicated modular cockpit Published frame dimensions help with initial planning, but you must still check the whole occupied footprint and room clearances. Less fabrication than a custom frame; a current, representative total for a complete flight-and-space cockpit is not established. Some manufacturers describe adjustable plates or mounts for different layouts. Confirm the exact control fit and mounting pattern for your chosen frame and devices.

The desk-mounted option is illustrated in a March 2026 Simulator Hardware guide. A TechteamGB personal build account shows one way to use extrusion for a flight-and-racing rig. For modular examples, Next Level Racing describes HOTAS, yoke, and space-sim configuration options for its NLR-S018, while Thermaltake lists adjustable control mounts for the GF500. These are vendor-described capabilities rather than independent fit or performance tests.

Measure the cockpit and your seated reach before fixing dimensions

Measure the available area with the seat in the positions you will actually use. Include the pedals, control mounts, keyboard and mouse, displays, and room to enter or exit. Check doorways and other narrow access points before bringing in a frame.

  • Stainless Steel Yoke Shaft - Robust, smooth and accurate control of your virtual aircraft in flight simulators
  • POV Hat, 14 button controls, and 3-position mode switch offer at least 54 programmable controls, giving you most of your aircraft’s functions under your fingertips
  • 2 position desk clamp provides mounting flexibility for a wide range of desks with a robust, secure clamping force to ensure your controls stay where you need them
  • In the Box : Flight Yoke with 5.9 ft (1.8m) USB Connector Cable, Flight Throttle Quadrant with 4.92 ft (1.5m), PS/2 Connector Cable, 2 Desk Clamps

Measure your seated reach as well as the room. Sketch the seat, pedals, stick or yoke, throttle, and screens in their intended positions. Leave enough clearance for controls to move through their full range without hitting the desk, seat, or each other. If more than one person will use the rig, account for differences in reach and preferred seat position.

As a reference point, Thermaltake lists the GF500’s external dimensions as 600×1320×1100 mm and describes a sliding, reclining seat with adjustable control mounts. Those are the product page’s published dimensions, not a substitute for measuring your own room or the space occupied by your controls.

Check the mounts and device fit before buying

Adjustability helps only if the hardware attaches securely and can be positioned where you need it. Match each device to the frame’s plate pattern and check the manufacturer’s compatibility information for the exact cockpit model and control model. Compatibility lists can change, so verify them at purchase time.

Some stick bases require a hard mount for stability, according to VIRPIL’s HOSAS and HOTAS guide. Do not assume a clamp, plate, or mount will fit simply because it is described as adjustable. Check mounting holes, base dimensions, required fasteners, and whether the assembled control will clear the seat and other devices.

Thermaltake says of the GF500: “The throttle and joystick mount provide multiple angle adjustments, and yoke mount provide forward & backward movement to fit your most suitable flight posture.” Treat this as the manufacturer’s description of its product, not as independent evidence that it will fit every user or device.

Build in stages so fit problems are easier to catch

  1. List your sims and control styles. Decide whether you need HOSAS, HOTAS, a yoke and throttle, pedals, or a combination. Mark which controls must stay mounted and which need to swing, detach, or swap.
  2. Measure the room and your reach. Sketch the seat, pedals, controls, keyboard and mouse, and displays. Use published frame dimensions only as a reference.
  3. Choose a frame approach. Use the desk if you want a low-fabrication start; choose extrusion if you want to design a multipurpose layout; consider a modular cockpit if you prefer adjustable, purpose-made mounts.
  4. Verify fit before ordering. Check device dimensions, mounting patterns, and the frame maker’s compatibility list for your specific models.
  5. Install the essentials first. Position the seat and pedals, mount the primary controls, and check reach and clearance. Add panels, displays, lighting, and cable management after the core layout works for you.

For a DIY plan, total the components required by your design—including the frame, connectors and fasteners, seat, mounts, and any controls you still need—rather than treating a published cockpit figure as a complete quote. The cited sources do not establish a representative current price for that combination.
