Book the timed museum admission first, then fit food and workshops around that fixed entry window. Nintendo Museum tickets are date-and-time specific, issued in a visitor’s name and checked against identification. The on-site café is walk-in only, while Craft & Play workshops require a separate, same-day reservation after you enter. That combination means your ticket determines the day’s framework; meals and Hanafuda activities remain flexible or competitive add-ons.
Start with the admission ticket, not the restaurant
Nintendo Museum admission is scarce and controlled by a timed ticket. Nintendo says tickets grant entry only on the listed date and time, are tied to visitor names and require identification at the gate. The normal way to obtain them is a randomly selected drawing that opens approximately three months before your intended visit. Nintendo’s own ticketing wording is: “Tickets are sold via a randomly selected drawing.” If tickets remain after the drawing, additional inventory may be released later on a first-come, first-served basis.
Do not design an itinerary around a hoped-for café visit and then search for admission. Secure the museum date and entry slot first. Only after you know the slot should you choose trains, decide whether a workshop is worth pursuing and leave room for a walk-in meal.

These prices are listed in Nintendo Museum’s current user guide. The museum opened on October 2, 2024, and policies can change, so check the current official ticket page for your travel date.

How to obtain and activate a timed ticket
- Create or use a free Nintendo Account. A Nintendo Account is required to enter the ticket process.
- Enter the drawing. Apply through the official ticketing website when the drawing opens, approximately three months before the date you want. Select a date and available entry time for every intended visitor.
- Complete payment if selected. Nintendo requires credit-card payment for a successful drawing result. Use each visitor’s full name exactly as it appears on the identification that person will bring.
- Confirm the result. Check the ticketing website and the email connected with your account. A winning notice is not permission to transfer the ticket to somebody else.
- Review the ticket before travel. Resale is prohibited, and Nintendo checks identity. A third-party voucher or resale listing is not a legitimate substitute for a ticket issued to the visitor.
- Issue the QR code. From 14:00 on the day before your visit, open Review Tickets on the ticketing site and issue the QR code. Issuing it makes the ticket non-cancellable, so wait until your date, names and travel plans are settled.
- Enter the museum. At the gate, present the QR code and identification for each visitor. Nintendo’s guide says a passport is the only accepted identification for non-Japanese nationals.
Keep the QR code accessible on the device you will use at the entrance, and check that the displayed names match the documents before leaving for Uji. The important cutoff is not the drawing date but QR issuance: it begins at 14:00 the day before and removes cancellation eligibility.
Choose an entry slot that leaves room for food and activities
Your ticket’s time is the anchor for every other decision. A slot earlier in the day gives you the option of eating in the café afterward, but you must manage the morning journey and any workshop reservation immediately after entry. A later slot leaves more time to reach Uji but pushes exhibits, workshops and dinner closer to closing.
Questions to answer before selecting a slot
- Will you arrive via Kintetsu Ogura or JR Ogura, and how long will your connection and station transfer take?
- Is the workshop more important than a relaxed café meal?
- Do you need to leave Uji for another reservation after the museum?
- Can every visitor carry the matching identification and display the QR code?
Nintendo does not publish a required arrival buffer, an average visit duration or a guaranteed café wait. Treat the published station walks as the minimum walking portion, then add your own transfer, navigation and contingency time before the ticket slot. The museum will not become an open-ended admission if you miss the time printed on the ticket.
Plan the Nintendo Museum Café as a walk-in stop
The Nintendo Museum Café is inside Exhibition Building 3 on the first floor. It is available only to museum ticket holders and operates from 10:00 to 20:00, with last orders at 19:15. The café has approximately 130 seats. Nintendo’s restaurant information states: “Reservations are not accepted.”

Because there is no reservation, do not schedule a train connection or another timed attraction on the assumption that you will be seated at a particular minute. The practical sequence is to finish enough of the exhibits to make a meal worthwhile, join the café’s ordering process, and keep your departure plan flexible until your order is complete.
How ordering works
- Go to the café on the first floor of Exhibition Building 3 after entering the museum.
- Order using the café’s QR-code system or verbally at the register.
- Retain the order number and watch the monitor for your call.
- Collect the order when your number appears, leaving enough time before the 19:15 last order if you are visiting late.
The café page warns that menu items and prices may change without notice. Allergy information is supplied through the café operator, Smiles Co., Ltd.; anyone with an allergy should check the current in-store information rather than relying on an old menu or a translated summary.
Where the café fits best
- Before exhibits: This can work after an early entry, but it uses time when you may instead need to secure a workshop slot.
- Between exhibit areas: Useful when you want a break, provided you can tolerate an unknown wait and still reach a workshop or closing time.
- After exhibits: Often the simplest plan for a morning or early-afternoon ticket; keep the 19:15 last-order deadline in view.
There is no published guaranteed wait time, so the café is a flexible meal opportunity, not a timed reservation.

Craft & Play workshops are separate from admission and carry an additional fee. Reservations are made on the day of your visit, on a first-come, first-served basis. Ask soon after entry at either the first-floor Exhibition Building 1 lobby information counter or the second-floor Exhibition Building 3 workshop desk.

Try Playing Hanafuda!
For Try Playing Hanafuda!, the reserved workshop must begin within three hours of the entry time printed on your ticket. This rule makes the admission slot decisive: a late request may leave no eligible start time even if a later workshop appears on the day’s schedule.
Let’s Make Hanafuda!
For Let’s Make Hanafuda!, you may reserve any available slot. The broader timing rule gives more flexibility, but spaces can still be taken by earlier visitors because reservations are first-come, first-served.
Nintendo notes that the workshop schedule changed on April 15, 2026. Recheck the official workshop information before travel rather than assuming a schedule seen in an older guide remains valid.

How to choose between a workshop and the café

For a group, decide in advance who will ask about workshop availability while the rest of the party stays together. Do not split the group unless every participant understands the reservation rules and the person reserving can provide the required details.

Build the journey from Kyoto to the museum
The museum is at 56 Kaguraden, Ogura-cho, Uji-shi, Kyoto 611-0042. Nintendo lists two public-transport approaches:

Choose the station according to the route you are already taking through Kyoto rather than treating one as universally faster. Kintetsu Ogura may fit a Kyoto Line itinerary; JR Ogura may be simpler when your preceding train is on the Nara Line. In either case, add time for finding the correct exit, walking with children or luggage and recovering from a delayed connection.
The museum has no ordinary visitor parking. Nintendo instructs visitors to use public transportation and says private cars, motorcycles, bicycles and taxis are not permitted for ordinary access. Do not plan to be dropped at the entrance by taxi or to leave a rental car nearby as your primary strategy.

Normal museum hours are 10:00 to 20:00. The museum is closed on Tuesdays. When Tuesday is a national holiday, it opens on Tuesday and closes on Wednesday instead. It also closes during the New Year period from December 30 through January 3.

Nintendo may close temporarily because of severe weather, a natural disaster or another unforeseen event. The company says ticket holders will be notified by email and through the official sites. Monitor the email associated with the ticket and check official notices before setting out, especially when weather could disrupt rail service.
Three practical itinerary patterns
Morning entry with a workshop-first priority
- Reach the appropriate Ogura station early enough to complete the listed walk and your personal buffer.
- Present the QR code and matching identification at the timed entry.
- Go promptly to the Exhibition Building 1 lobby information counter or Exhibition Building 3 workshop desk.
- For Try Playing Hanafuda!, accept only a start time within three hours of the ticket’s entry time.
- Explore exhibits around the confirmed workshop, then use the café as a walk-in meal when convenient.
This pattern protects the most time-sensitive optional activity and treats lunch as movable.
Morning entry with a café priority
- Enter with the required QR code and identification.
- Proceed to the first-floor café in Exhibition Building 3 and place an order by QR code or at the register.
- While waiting for the order number, decide whether the remaining schedule still allows a workshop reservation.
- Keep enough time for exhibits and the return walk to your chosen station.
This is the least stressful choice when the meal matters more than a workshop, but it accepts the possibility that workshop slots disappear.
Late entry with no fixed meal reservation
- Plan the rail connection and station walk so you are not dependent on a last-minute taxi or car drop-off.
- Enter at the printed time and check workshop availability immediately if you want Try Playing Hanafuda!.
- Use the three-hour eligibility window to select a suitable start time, or reserve any available time for Let’s Make Hanafuda!.
- Visit the café only while it is still accepting orders; the final order time is 19:15 even though the museum closes at 20:00.
A late slot leaves less room for a long café wait, so a workshop request should be made before settling into a meal.
What to carry and verify before leaving
- QR code issued through Review Tickets from 14:00 on the day before the visit.
- Original identification for every named visitor; non-Japanese nationals should bring a passport because Nintendo identifies it as the only accepted ID for them.
- Names that exactly match the ticket record and the identification documents.
- A payment card if you intend to pay for a workshop or café purchases.
- Rail directions for either Kintetsu Ogura or JR Ogura, including the correct exit.
- Current information about café menu items, prices and allergy handling if anyone in the group has dietary risks.
- A plan for what happens if severe weather or another unforeseen closure affects the date.
Do not issue the QR code until you are comfortable with the visit details: issuance makes the ticket non-cancellable. Do not buy a resale ticket as a backup; Nintendo prohibits resale and checks identity at entry.
A decision framework for your final schedule
Rank the day’s elements before choosing the ticket slot. If admission is the only non-negotiable item, select the best available date and build everything else around it. If a Hanafuda workshop is the main goal, favor a slot that lets you reach a reservation desk immediately and remember the three-hour rule for Try Playing Hanafuda!. If eating at the museum is the main goal, choose a slot that leaves time before the 19:15 last order, but accept that the café has no reservation and no guaranteed wait.
Then compare your station options against the rest of your Kyoto itinerary. The five-minute Kintetsu walk and eight-minute JR walk are both short, but the best choice is the one that minimizes your preceding transfer risk. Finally, keep your return journey flexible enough to absorb the café queue or a workshop slot without turning a timed museum admission into a missed train.
