Map stops with a route planner that supports your exact model, pair charging with safe rest breaks, check live station details before departure, and identify an alternative charger for vulnerable legs.
How far can your electric SUV go on a trip?
There is no single dependable distance for every electric SUV journey. Range changes with the vehicle, route and conditions. The Australian Government notes that varied terrain, extreme temperatures and higher speeds can reduce range, so a route based on ideal or headline range may not fit the drive you are planning. See the government’s electric-vehicle trip-planning guidance.
Use the route planner’s estimate as a planning aid, not a promise. Select the exact SUV model when the tool allows it, and account for relevant conditions such as season and temperature if it offers those options. Leave enough flexibility to reach a suitable charger if conditions or station availability differ from the estimate.
How do you plan an EV trip and choose charging stops?
- Select your vehicle. In the vehicle’s built-in route planner or an EV-aware app, choose the exact SUV model and, where available, set relevant trip conditions. Check that the planner includes charging time in the journey estimate.
- Map the complete route. Review the distance between charging stops and whether each leg suits the range estimate for your journey. Do not choose stops solely because a charger is shown on the map; consider whether the location and charging speed make it practical.
- Check the vehicle and charger speeds. A charger’s advertised power is its maximum output, not a guarantee of what your SUV will receive. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) explains that an EV may accept less power than the dispenser can provide. For a realistic dwell-time estimate, consider your vehicle’s DC fast-charging capability as well as the charger rating. The EPA’s EV-driver guidance explains this distinction.
- Find a fallback for important stops. Identify another usable charger near a planned stop or along that leg, especially where a busy or unavailable site would leave few options. Check connector compatibility and whether the location is accessible to your vehicle.
- Review current details before leaving. Check station status and route details close to departure. Apps and public websites may show availability, connector type, charging speed, price and amenities, but station information can change.
- Fit breaks into the route. Treat rest stops as part of the plan rather than driving longer just to reach a charger. The Australian Government recommends a rest break every two hours; choose charging stops that support safe breaks as well as the route.
Which apps and route planners should you compare?
The Australian Government lists A Better Route Planner (ABRP), Charge@Large, Google Maps and PlugShare as commonly used options, while explicitly noting it does not endorse particular apps. The U.S. EPA names ABRP, Chargeway and the Department of Energy’s Alternative Fueling Station Locator. Neither government source establishes one tool as best.

Compare tools by whether they support your exact SUV, include charging time in journey estimates, account for relevant conditions, show useful station information and make it straightforward to find an alternative. Coverage, connector types, network access and charger availability vary by country, so verify that the app and listed stations suit the region and vehicle you will use.
How much should you charge at each stop?
For DC fast charging, around 80% is often a useful point to consider leaving if the next leg is comfortably reachable. The EPA says charging commonly slows significantly beyond roughly 80% and that reaching the final 20% can double the time spent charging. Continuing to charge near that point may cost more time than it adds in useful range.

That is guidance, not a fixed cutoff. Charge further when the next leg or destination requires it, and follow your vehicle’s route estimate and charging instructions. The Australian Government advises charging to 100% before leaving home and gives 80% as a rule of thumb for other journey stops; actual charging speed and the amount you need depend on the vehicle and trip.

Some electric vehicles can precondition the battery before DC fast charging, including in extreme temperatures. If your SUV supports this, using its built-in navigation to route to a fast charger may trigger the feature. Availability and operation are model-dependent, so check the owner’s manual rather than assuming the function is present or works the same way across vehicles.

What should you check or carry for the route?
- Station fit: Confirm the connector type, access and charging options are compatible with your SUV and journey. Listings may also show price and amenities, but check current details close to departure.
- Optional AC cable: A Type 2-to-Type 2 cable may be useful if your SUV is compatible and your route could use untethered AC chargers. The Australian Government relays NRMA advice to carry one for chargers without a tethered lead. It is not required at every stop; check your vehicle connector and route before buying.
- Backup plan: Keep an alternate charging option for legs where a station being busy or unavailable would cause a problem. Do not assume an app listing guarantees an available charger when you arrive.
