The reliable way to plan a LEGO city display is to measure the surface and every building first, then test a scaled arrangement before buying baseplates or furniture. Modular buildings are designed to stand alone or connect to one another, so you can build a straight street, an L-shaped corner, or a deeper block with open space for roads, parks, parking, and future additions.
There is no universal shelf size or fixed number of buildings per shelf. Even LEGO’s own examples show materially different footprints, which is why your collection and available room—not a generic layout diagram—must determine the plan.
What “modular” means for a city display
LEGO’s 2020 US summer catalog says: “Each LEGO® modular building can be displayed individually or connected to others!” That statement is the key planning principle. You do not need to complete a continuous row before displaying a set, and you can rearrange buildings as your collection changes.
Connection is optional, not a requirement. A single building can be a complete display on a shelf; several can form a street; and a group can be arranged as blocks separated by roads or public spaces. Because sets differ in width and depth, a layout based on “one building equals one fixed slot” will eventually leave awkward gaps or run out of depth.

Start with the real display surface
Measure the usable area before moving assembled buildings or ordering furniture. Record width and depth in the units you will use for the plan, and note anything that reduces the practical footprint.
- Measure between walls, cabinet sides, posts, and door frames rather than measuring the nominal outside width of a shelf.
- Account for doors, drawers, skirting boards, and any overhang that prevents a building from sitting fully back.
- Decide where viewers will stand. A display that can be seen only from the front can use depth differently from one viewed from two or three sides.
- Mark power outlets, lighting hardware, ventilation openings, and any area that must remain reachable.
- Check the load and stability of the furniture before adding a large collection. LEGO does not publish a universal furniture specification for modular displays.
Keep the measurement sheet with your layout drawing. If the usable depth changes by even a small amount because of a frame or trim piece, the difference can determine whether a block arrangement fits.
Inventory each building’s actual footprint
Measure the assembled footprint of every building you own, including any attached steps, stoops, side walls, or fixed landscaping that you intend to keep in place. Use the set’s instructions or official product information for confirmation, and write down width, depth, and height separately. Do not treat a historical catalog dimension as a specification for every modular building.

| LEGO Ideas Modular Parking Lot proposal | 32×16 studs | A 2020 LEGO Ideas proposal showing one possible gap-filling area, not a required parking module. |
The two catalog examples illustrate why counting buildings is not enough. Two 9-inch-wide Downtown Diner footprints would occupy about 18 inches before allowing for any street or gap, while Assembly Square alone is listed at 14 inches wide. Use your measured values for the final drawing.

Choose a layout that fits how you view the city
Compare possible arrangements on four axes: total width, total depth, access, and flexibility for future additions. None is an official LEGO ranking; the best choice depends on your room and collection.
| Layout | Space behavior | Viewing and access | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Straight row | Uses length efficiently and keeps depth shallow. | Simple front-facing access; rear areas can be difficult to reach on a deep shelf. | A narrow shelf, a single street frontage, or a collection that is still growing sideways. |
| L-shaped corner | Uses a corner and consumes more depth than a straight row. | Creates two visible façades; the inside corner needs deliberate road or plaza treatment. | A room corner or a display intended to be viewed from two directions. |
| Block with courtyard | Requires the most depth but creates an interior open area. | Good visual variety, but every building and the courtyard must remain reachable. | A table or deep cabinet where a neighborhood scene matters more than maximum capacity. |
| Mixed or staggered arrangement | Combines rows, gaps, and partial areas to fit irregular surfaces. | Can improve sightlines, but transitions need roads, sidewalks, or landscaping to look intentional. | Collections with different building depths or a display that must work around furniture constraints. |
A step-by-step planning method
- Measure and sketch. Draw the usable shelf or table as a rectangle to scale. Add walls, frames, door swings, and the viewing side. Leave out inaccessible strips rather than pretending they are usable.
- List every building. Record the measured width and depth, height, detachable sections, and whether the building can move independently. Mark unusually wide or deep sets so they are handled first.
- Create a consistent grid. You can draw a paper plan, use a spreadsheet, or place baseplates temporarily on the surface. The grid only needs to be consistent; it is not an official modular standard.
- Place the largest footprints first. Test Assembly Square or any other wide set before filling the remaining space. Put corner pieces and deep buildings in the positions that have the fewest alternatives.
- Test at least three arrangements. Draw a straight row, an L-shaped corner, and a block or staggered plan. Label the total width and depth of each rather than judging by eye.
- Reserve circulation and open areas. Mark roads, sidewalks, a park, plaza, parking area, or an empty future-building slot. The 32×16-stud parking-lot example from LEGO Ideas demonstrates how a partial area can fill a gap, but it is not a required module.
- Check sightlines. Stand where the display will normally be viewed and look for façades hidden behind taller or deeper buildings. If the display is visible from the side, inspect both ends of every row.
- Check reach. Make sure you can remove a building, dust behind it, and retrieve a minifigure without dismantling an entire block. A visually dense plan that cannot be serviced becomes frustrating.
- Reserve growth space. Leave at least one flexible area if you expect to add buildings. A deliberately empty slot is easier to use than a tightly packed row that must be rebuilt for every new set.
- Verify before buying. Re-measure the final plan, including roads and clearance, before purchasing baseplates, a table, or shelving. Compare the furniture’s internal dimensions—not its advertised outer size—with your drawing.
Use baseplates as planning units, not assumptions
LEGO baseplates are useful for laying out a city because they make sections easy to move and let you sketch roads or open areas on a repeatable grid. The LEGO Ideas examples use footprints expressed in studs: 48×32 and 64×32 studs for alternative high-school configurations, and 32×16 studs for a parking lot. Those figures describe the proposals that published them; they do not establish a standard footprint for modular buildings.
Place empty baseplates on the display surface before committing to a permanent arrangement. Label each one on the underside or in your plan so you know which area is a building, road, courtyard, or reserve. If a set’s footprint does not align with the temporary grid, follow the measured building rather than forcing it into a nominal module.
Design roads, gaps, and public spaces deliberately
Open space makes a city read as a city instead of a row of unrelated models. Decide what each gap represents before you fill it.

Roads and sidewalks
A continuous road can unify a straight row, while a corner road can explain why two façades meet at an angle. Keep the road width consistent within the scene where possible, but do not invent a universal width: the cited sources do not specify one. Measure the space your road pieces and vehicles actually require.
Parking and service areas
A parking lot, loading area, or alley can absorb an irregular gap between buildings. The 32×16-stud LEGO Ideas parking-lot proposal is a useful example of a partial footprint, not a mandated size. Confirm that the area fits your vehicles and remains reachable for cleaning.
Parks and courtyards
A courtyard can make a deeper block more interesting and can provide a visual break between tall façades. The 64×32-stud alternative in the LEGO Ideas High School proposal includes additional courtyard space, but that proposal is not an official set plan. Use the idea—an open center—without treating its dimensions as a rule.
Plan for height, lighting, and access
Width and depth determine whether a layout fits, but height determines whether it can be displayed safely. The 2020 catalog lists both Assembly Square and Downtown Diner as over 13 inches high. Measure the tallest finished model, including rooftop details, antennas, signs, and any lighting you plan to add.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Leave enough clearance above a building to lift it out without scraping the shelf above.
- Keep removable roofs, floors, and side panels accessible if you use them for play or maintenance.
- Route lighting cables along a planned rear or side path rather than across roads and sidewalks.
- Avoid placing a fragile tower at the front edge where a hand, sleeve, or door can catch it.
- If children or pets can reach the display, use furniture anchoring and a layout that does not rely on a precarious overhang.
Make a growing collection easy to rearrange
Collections rarely grow in a perfectly planned order. Preserve flexibility by separating fixed decisions from movable ones.
- Keep one open area at the end of a row or beside a block for a future building.
- Use removable baseplate sections so a new corner can be inserted without dismantling the entire city.
- Photograph the completed arrangement and record each section’s measured footprint. This makes restoration after cleaning or moving much faster.
- Store spare road, sidewalk, and landscaping pieces together so a new gap can be given a coherent treatment.
- Re-measure whenever you add a building with a different width or depth; do not assume the previous spacing still works.
Troubleshoot common planning problems
The row fits on paper but not on the shelf
Recheck internal shelf width, side frames, and the space consumed by angled façades or steps. Measure the assembled models, not only their baseplates. Move the widest building to an end or test an L-shaped arrangement.
The city looks flat and repetitive
Introduce a corner, stagger building fronts, or create a park or courtyard. Confirm that the change does not block a required access path. A deeper arrangement can add visual variety, but it must still fit the measured depth.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThere is an awkward narrow gap
Measure the gap and decide whether it can represent a sidewalk, alley, planting strip, or service lane. If it is too small for a meaningful feature, shift the neighboring buildings and preserve a larger intentional open area instead of scattering tiny slivers throughout the display.

A building cannot be removed for cleaning
Reduce the depth of the block, move the building to an edge, or make the front section removable. Access is a design requirement, not an afterthought.
A planned expansion has nowhere to go
Revisit the inventory and identify which spaces are decorative rather than structural. A parking lot, plaza, or reserve slot can often be converted, but only if the replacement still leaves roads and access coherent.
Buying checklist for the physical display
Buy components only after the layout survives a full-size measurement check.

- For a table or shelving, compare internal width, depth, and height with your drawing and the tallest model.
- Check how the furniture is assembled, whether shelves are adjustable, and whether the finished unit can be anchored safely.
- Allow room to stand in front of the display and remove models; a surface that technically fits but cannot be reached is not a workable display.
- Do not rely on current prices, stock, retirement status, or a retailer listing as part of the layout decision; those details change and are not established by the cited dimensions.
Document the finished city
Once the arrangement works, photograph each section from the normal viewing positions. Keep a simple diagram with building names, measured footprints, baseplate boundaries, and the location of removable pieces. Record the date of the measurement because furniture, lighting, and collection size can change.
When you add a new modular building, place its measured rectangle into the diagram first. If it fits the reserved area without blocking access, install it. If it does not, test the straight-row, corner, and block alternatives again rather than compressing every gap by eye.
