To insert a PDF page into a Word document as a fixed image, first export that page as a PNG or JPEG, then use Insert > Pictures > This Device in desktop Word to add the exported file. Word inserts the picture into the document by default; it does not turn the image’s text into editable Word text. This approach is useful when the page’s appearance matters more than editing its contents.
What does it mean to insert a PDF page as an image?
A PDF page inserted as an image is a visual snapshot of the page, not an editable PDF page inside Word. The page’s text, charts and layout appear together as picture content. To use Word’s Pictures command, render or export the PDF page to an image file first; selecting the PDF itself through that command is not the image workflow.
The distinction matters when you choose how to handle the source. An image is suited to a page that should look consistent and stay fixed, such as a scanned form, a chart or a designed page. It is less useful when you need to revise the wording, search the inserted content, or let readers select and copy its text. Keep the original PDF available when those capabilities matter.

How do I insert a PDF page into Word as an image?
Export the page or pages you need as PNG or JPEG files, then insert those files in desktop Word. For a multi-page PDF, export each required page separately and insert the images in page order.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Export the page. Open the PDF in a viewer or converter that can export pages as PNG or JPEG. Choose only the pages you need if the tool allows page selection, and export one page per image.
- Choose an image format and resolution. Use PNG for text, diagrams and line art when sharp edges are important. Use JPEG when the page is photographic and a smaller image file is preferable. Keep the export resolution high; Microsoft’s picture guidance identifies 300 dpi as best for viewing and printing and recommends the highest available resolution.
- Open the Word document in the desktop app. Click where you want the page image to appear. The insertion path described here is Insert > Pictures > This Device.
- Select the exported image. Choose the appropriate PNG or JPEG file, then select Insert. Word embeds inserted pictures in the document by default.
- Set its size and placement. Drag a corner handle to resize the image while preserving its proportions. If you need to position it freely beside text rather than have it sit in the text line, select the image and choose a wrapping option other than In Line with Text.
- Repeat for additional pages. Insert each exported page image in the same order as the PDF pages. Add a caption or meaningful alt text when readers need help identifying the page or accessing the document with assistive technology.
After insertion, check the page at the size readers will encounter it. A page that appears legible when enlarged on screen may still look soft when printed if the exported image resolution is too low. If text or fine lines look blurred, make a fresh export at a higher resolution before changing the image’s size in Word.
Should I use an image, an embedded PDF, or Word’s PDF conversion?
Choose an image when the page needs to retain a fixed visual appearance. Choose an embedded PDF when readers should receive a PDF file object, and consider Word’s conversion when you need to edit mostly textual content.
| Method | What Word receives | Best fit | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Insert a page image | A PNG or JPEG picture of the rendered page | Preserving a page’s visual layout as fixed content | The picture is not editable text, and it does not function as the original PDF file. |
| Insert a PDF object | A PDF file object, which can display as an icon or be linked to the file | Including the PDF as a file rather than turning its page into a picture | This is a different result from a page image. Word for the web does not support inserting objects such as PDFs. |
| Open the PDF in Word for conversion | A copy converted into a Word document, with layout matched as Word can manage | Working with a PDF that is mostly text and needs editing | Conversion may change the layout. For graphics-heavy pages, Word may use a whole-page image, whose text cannot be edited. |
When is the image method the right choice?
Use it when the page’s arrangement is the content: for example, a page with a chart, scan or complex graphic that should look as it does in the PDF. A picture provides a stable visual representation, but it gives up the text-level flexibility of a document conversion. If you expect to correct a sentence or reuse a number from the page, keep an editable source or use an appropriate conversion instead.
When should I insert the PDF as an object?
Use Insert > Object > Create from File > Browse in desktop Word to select a PDF file. Word offers a choice between displaying an icon and linking to the file. This adds a file object; it does not rasterize a selected PDF page and place that page as a picture. If the object is linked, readers need access to the linked file for that link to remain useful in their environment.

When should I convert the PDF to Word?
Opening a PDF in Word makes a copy and attempts to match the original layout while converting it to a Word document. This can be the more practical route for PDFs made mostly of text when editing matters. Conversion is not a promise of a page-perfect result: check the layout and proofread the converted document, especially if the original includes complex graphics.
How do I choose the right image quality?
Start with the page’s content and how it will be viewed. Text, diagrams and line art benefit from PNG’s crisp edges; photographs may suit JPEG when file size is a concern. In either format, export at a sufficiently high resolution rather than enlarging a small image in Word and expecting it to gain detail.
- For printing: Microsoft’s picture-file guidance recommends the highest available resolution and cites 300 dpi as best for viewing and printing. Treat that as Microsoft’s general guidance, not a guarantee that every export tool or printer will produce identical results.
- For small text: Inspect the exported image before inserting it. If letters already look blurred in the image file, inserting it into Word will not restore their detail.
- For a photograph-heavy page: JPEG can reduce file size, but image compression may soften details. Compare the result at the intended display or print size.
- For diagrams and text: PNG is the safer starting point when preserving clean edges matters more than keeping the image as small as possible.
Resolution and displayed size work together. If you resize the picture substantially, check the result at its final size in Word rather than judging it only at the size of the exported file. If it looks soft, return to the PDF and export again at a higher resolution; repeatedly enlarging the same low-resolution picture does not add information.

Word’s wrapping setting controls whether a picture behaves like a character in a line of text or can be positioned more freely. For the simplest document flow, leave the image In Line with Text. If it needs to sit beside text or move independently, select it and choose a different wrapping option.

Resize with a corner handle so the page keeps its proportions. Stretching from a side handle can distort the page, making text or diagrams look unnaturally wide or narrow. A full-page image also takes up space in the document’s page layout, so check that nearby text and page breaks remain where you intend after inserting it.
For a sequence of pages, insert the exported images in the intended reading order and verify the result from the first page to the last. Add captions if readers need to distinguish pages, and provide meaningful alt text for each image when the content needs to be accessible. Alt text should identify the page’s purpose or convey the important information, not merely repeat that the object is an image.
What can go wrong, and how do I fix it?
The inserted page looks blurry
Export the PDF page again at a higher resolution. Use PNG for text, diagrams and line art when crisp edges matter. Microsoft’s general picture guidance recommends the highest available resolution and identifies 300 dpi as best for viewing and printing; the export tool may use different settings or labels.

The Word document is too large
Inserted pictures are embedded by default, and embedded image data can increase the document’s size. Reduce the image dimensions or compression where appropriate, balancing a smaller file against the resolution needed for legible text and print quality. A linked picture can reduce the amount of image data stored in the document, but use that approach only if the recipients’ environment can reliably reach the source path.
I need to edit the words on the page
A page image is not editable text. If the PDF is mostly text, open it in Word for conversion and proofread the result because the layout can change. If exact appearance matters more than editing, retain the image or use a PDF object instead of relying on conversion.
I am using Word for the web
Microsoft says Word for the web does not let users insert objects such as PDFs. The documented PDF-object workflow therefore requires desktop Word. The image workflow described in this article also uses the desktop app’s Insert > Pictures > This Device path.

A page image does not give readers the same text access as the PDF’s selectable content. Include meaningful alt text for each inserted page image, and retain the original PDF when readers may need to search its text or select and copy passages. If readers need the PDF as a file, an embedded object is a distinct option from displaying the page as an image.

Consider the recipient’s situation before choosing a linked file or a large embedded image. An embedded picture travels inside the Word document, while a linked picture depends on access to its source path. A linked object can keep document size down, but a broken or inaccessible path makes the source unavailable to recipients. Choose the method that fits the expected way the document will be stored and shared.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can someone copy text from a PDF page after I insert it as a picture?
No. The inserted page is picture content, so its words are not selectable text in Word. If readers need to copy or search the wording, retain the original PDF or use a text-oriented conversion and review the converted layout.
Will a page image keep links inside the PDF clickable?
The image method inserts a rasterized picture rather than the PDF page as a document object. Do not rely on links in the original page remaining interactive in the picture; share the original PDF when readers need its file-level behavior.
Can I insert a page image without saving it as a separate file first?
The Pictures workflow requires an image file, so the PDF page must first be rendered or exported as PNG or JPEG. A PDF object can be inserted through a separate desktop Word workflow, but that is not the same as adding a page image.
