Choose the game first if you want music tied to a specific adventure. Then identify the recording type—original release, Pixel Remaster presentation, a later game’s soundtrack, or a cross-game arrangement—and finally verify the credited composer, exact song version, edition, format and disc count. This prevents the most expensive mix-ups: the original Final Fantasy VII, VII Remake and VII Rebirth albums are separate purchases; Pixel Remaster CDs are remastered presentations of named games; and Modulation is a Uematsu-arranged sampler rather than a complete game soundtrack.

The guide below matches each listening goal to a documented album and flags omissions, bonus editions, import packaging and availability notes that can change what you actually receive.

How should I start choosing a Final Fantasy soundtrack?

Write down the one thing you want to recognize when the first track starts: a particular game, a composer, a period of the series, or a physical format. That answer determines the correct branch before you compare editions.

  1. Pick the game or musical goal. Choose VII, Remake, Rebirth, IV, V, VI, XIV or XVI if one title matters most. Choose Uematsu’s cross-game work only when no single game is the priority.
  2. Choose the recording relationship to the game. An original soundtrack documents a specific release; a Pixel Remaster CD documents that remastered version; an arrangement album changes source material; a “Plus” set supplements an existing soundtrack.
  3. Confirm the exact edition and track version. Remake has standard, Plus and Special Edit products, and Rebirth identifies a particular “LOVELESS” version. Read the disc-by-disc listing rather than relying on a short product title.
  4. Check the physical medium and current listing. CDs, vinyl and Blu-ray require different playback hardware. Stock, prices and digital-code validity can change, and the publisher currently marks the original VII listing unavailable.

Which album should I buy for the original Final Fantasy VII?

Choose FINAL FANTASY VII ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK when you want the score associated with the original game, not the reimagined Remake or Rebirth productions. Square Enix’s listing credits Nobuo Uematsu with composing, arranging and producing and specifies 85 tracks on four CDs.

The product page gives an approximate November 2021 product-release date. That date describes this CD listing, not the year the game first appeared. The publisher currently labels the item unavailable, so treat the title as the exact product to search for rather than a promise that the publisher or a retailer has stock.

What is the difference between the VII, VII Remake and VII Rebirth soundtracks?

They are three different soundtrack purchases. Similar themes do not make their recordings interchangeable: the arrangements, performances, cue selection and story context belong to different games.

Album What it represents Documented details What it is not
FINAL FANTASY VII ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK The original game 85 tracks, four CDs; Uematsu credited for composition, arrangement and production Not the Remake or Rebirth recording
FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK Remake’s played music Seven discs; includes Uematsu-composed “Hollow” Not the 1997 album, Plus supplement or Special Edit package
FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH Original Soundtrack Rebirth’s played music Seven discs; track list specifies “No Promises to Keep LOVELESS ver.” Not another release of the song with a different version label

If a particular cue matters—especially a recurring theme—use the publisher’s disc and track list. The Remake listing separates music by disc and shows multiple variants of recurring themes, so the game name alone cannot identify the recording you will receive.

What do Remake Plus and Special Edit add?

FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE Original Soundtrack Plus concentrates on previously unreleased in-game background music, particularly cutscene material. It is a supplement to the standard seven-disc set, not a replacement for it; buy both only if you want the additional material as well as the principal album.

FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE Original Soundtrack Special Edit Version packages the seven-disc soundtrack with a bonus-track CD and is described as a first-run limited edition. The checked publisher page currently says this edition is unavailable. “Special Edit” therefore changes the contents, while “Plus” names a separate supplementary release.

Is Pixel Remaster music the same as the original classic-game soundtrack?

No. The Pixel Remaster CDs are named for specific remastered games and present tracks remastered from the earlier Pixel Remaster digital soundtrack albums. They should be selected when you want the Pixel Remaster interpretation, not assumed to be the same recording as an original-era release.

Final Fantasy IV Pixel Remaster

The FINAL FANTASY IV PIXEL REMASTER Original Soundtrack CD documents the Pixel Remaster version of IV. Check the numeral in the title: “Pixel Remaster” describes the presentation, while “IV” identifies the game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final Fantasy V Pixel Remaster

The V listing includes recognizable entries such as “Battle at the Big Bridge” and “Dear Friends.” Those titles identify cues, but the album remains the Pixel Remaster recording rather than a blanket claim about every historical version of V’s music.

Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster

The VI listing includes “Terra’s Theme” and “Celes’s Theme.” It also displays several language-specific opera-track entries, so check the language label if vocal text matters to your purchase.

Square Enix lists approximately March 2026 for these physical CD releases. That is the approximate CD release month, not the original release date of the games. The publisher also identifies these as import CDs and warns that some packaging components may be in Japanese; do not assume every booklet is in English.

Which Final Fantasy album is best if I want Nobuo Uematsu across several games?

Choose Modulation – FINAL FANTASY Arrangement Album for a composer-led, cross-game program. Square Enix describes it as Uematsu arranging Final Fantasy masterpieces; the documented source material includes themes from V, VI, VII and X.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is an arrangement album, not one game’s complete original soundtrack. It is issued on vinyl and includes an MP3 redemption code with stated redemption limits and possible expiration. Confirm that your turntable setup suits the record and that any included code is still valid before treating the digital copy as part of the value.

How should I evaluate composer credits?

Use the credited composer line, not an assumption based on the franchise. A named creator can guide a cross-game purchase, but several Final Fantasy albums are collaborative and should not be described as solo works.

Uematsu-focused choices

The original VII listing explicitly credits Uematsu for composition, arrangement and production. Modulation is likewise centered on his arrangements, making it the clearest choice when his role—not a single game’s chronology—is your starting point.

Masayoshi Soken and collaborative credits

The FINAL FANTASY XVI ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK liner-note information identifies Masayoshi Soken. The BEFORE METEOR FINAL FANTASY XIV ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK listing credits Soken alongside Uematsu and other composers, so it is an ensemble credit rather than a solo Soken album.

When a composer name is not enough

The documented listings support the Uematsu and Soken examples above but do not establish a specific recommended album for Masashi Hamauzu or Yoko Shimomura. If one of those names is your deciding factor, verify the individual product’s official credit line before buying instead of inferring it from a series association.

Does the Final Fantasy XVI soundtrack include “Moongazing”?

No. Square Enix’s product description states: “The theme song by Kenshi Yonezu, "Tsuki Wo Miteita – Moongazing" is not included.” Choose the seven-disc XVI listing for the game’s soundtrack while treating that song as a documented omission, not an unlisted bonus.

This is a useful check for any album: a soundtrack title does not guarantee inclusion of every song heard in a game or its marketing. Read the track list and footnotes when a particular theme is essential.

What should I know about the Before Meteor XIV format?

BEFORE METEOR FINAL FANTASY XIV ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK is a single Blu-ray, not an ordinary audio-CD set. Its listing credits Uematsu, Soken and other composers and is aimed at early XIV material and collectors who want that format.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because it is Blu-ray, plan playback accordingly; a conventional CD-only player is not the same as a Blu-ray-capable device. Confirm the disc format before ordering, especially when a retailer’s abbreviated title omits the medium.

How do I verify that an album contains the exact recording I want?

Use this checklist before placing an order:

  1. Match the game numeral and subtitle. Distinguish VII from VII Remake and VII Rebirth, and IV, V and VI from one another. “Pixel Remaster” alone is not enough information.
  2. Read the edition word. “Original Soundtrack,” “Plus” and “Special Edit Version” identify different Remake products and different contents.
  3. Find the exact song label. Rebirth’s listing specifies “No Promises to Keep LOVELESS ver.”; another release of the song may use a different version.
  4. Count discs and identify the medium. The documented sets range from four CDs to seven CDs, one Blu-ray and a vinyl record with an MP3 code.
  5. Check omissions and language notes. XVI excludes “Moongazing,” while VI lists language-specific opera entries. Import packaging may include Japanese text.
  6. Check the current product page. Availability, prices, limited-edition status and code validity can change. The original VII publisher listing is currently marked unavailable.

What are the main buying mistakes to avoid?

  • Buying by franchise name alone: a VII Remake set will not supply the original 1997 recording.
  • Assuming remastered means identical: Pixel Remaster CDs document remastered presentations, not automatically every earlier soundtrack release.
  • Treating an arrangement as a complete game score: Modulation samples and rearranges themes across games.
  • Ignoring edition labels: Plus is supplementary, while Special Edit adds a bonus CD to a limited first-run package.
  • Overlooking hardware: vinyl and Blu-ray require equipment beyond a standard CD player.
  • Assuming every familiar theme is present: the XVI listing explicitly omits “Moongazing,” and individual track versions can differ.
  • Assuming English packaging: the publisher’s import warning means some Pixel Remaster packaging may be Japanese.

How do availability and release dates affect the decision?

Separate a product’s release date from the era of the game it represents. The original VII CD listing’s approximate November 2021 date describes that physical product, while the Pixel Remaster CD pages’ approximate March 2026 date describes their physical releases; neither date rewrites the games’ original launch history.

Stock and prices are dynamic. The publisher currently labels the original VII item unavailable and says the Special Edit page is unavailable, so use those pages to identify the exact product and then verify a retailer’s current condition, region, language and return policy. No third-party stock, price or physical condition is established here.

How were these soundtrack choices selected?

The selection follows the decisions a buyer can verify from official product information: the specific game represented, original versus Pixel Remaster versus rearranged recording, credited composer or composers, exact song version, standard or supplementary edition, physical medium, disc count, import-packaging warning and current availability note. Albums appear because they answer distinct listening goals, not because of a subjective sound-quality ranking.

No. It is the approximate release date of the listed four-CD product. The album represents the original game’s score, but the product date and the game’s debut date are separate facts.

Can I rely on an MP3 code that comes with Modulation?

Only after checking the code’s redemption terms and expiry status. The vinyl listing describes limits and possible expiration, so regard the code as conditional rather than a guaranteed permanent download.

Why do some Final Fantasy VI opera tracks have different language labels?

The publisher’s VI Pixel Remaster listing displays language-specific opera entries. Select the language variant shown in the track list if the vocal text is important to you.

Is a Blu-ray soundtrack playable in a normal CD player?

No; a CD-only player cannot read a Blu-ray audio disc. The Before Meteor release therefore requires Blu-ray-capable hardware, even though it is sold as a soundtrack.
