The safest way to buy a collaboration sneaker online is to measure both feet, use the longer foot, check its width, and match those measurements to the exact brand and sizing category shown for the pair. Then verify the collaboration’s underlying silhouette, material changes, size notation and item-specific return rules. A collaboration label does not justify an automatic half-size increase: fit depends on the model, construction, foot shape and the chart used.
What should you measure before buying a collaboration sneaker?
Measure at home while standing, wearing the socks you normally use, and record both length and width. A remembered size is only a starting hypothesis; the longer foot and the shoe’s own chart should determine your first choice.
- Measure at the end of the day. Feet can be larger later in the day. adidas recommends measuring in the socks normally worn with the shoes. Tape a sheet of paper to a hard, flat floor, stand naturally and mark the back of the heel and the tip of the longest toe. Nike describes the same standing heel-to-toe approach in its official men’s footwear guide.
- Measure both feet. Repeat the process for the other foot rather than assuming they match. Use the longer heel-to-toe measurement when consulting the chart. Nike says that if the measurement falls between chart sizes, it recommends sizing up; that instruction applies to its chart, not to every brand.
- Check width at the ball of the foot. Measure around the widest part or follow the brand’s width method. Width matters when a shoe has a narrow toe box, a stiff midfoot or limited width options.
- Write down the numbers and units. A ruler or centimetre-marked tape is enough; no special measuring device is required. Keep the length and width together so you do not accidentally compare one foot’s length with the other foot’s width.
- Use a printable tool only at its stated scale. New Balance’s 2026 printable men’s tool instructs users to print at 100 percent, not “fit to page,” and to check the calibration mark before measuring. Its scale instruction is about accurate printing, not a guarantee that a collaboration will fit the same way.
Do not measure while seated or with your foot relaxed off the floor. Standing places the foot under the load it experiences in a shoe and makes the result more useful for chart matching.
Which size chart should you trust?
Start with the manufacturer’s chart for the exact brand and category of the pair being sold, then use the listing’s notation to confirm that you are reading the right row. Do not begin with a cross-brand conversion based on a size you remember from another sneaker.

Match the category before the number
Identify whether the collaboration is listed as men’s, women’s, unisex, youth, grade school or another regional or age category. A US 8 in one category is not automatically the same physical shoe as a US 8 in another. Nike publishes a women’s-based unisex chart separately from its men’s chart, so use the chart that corresponds to the listing rather than switching charts mid-conversion.
Do not treat the box’s CM marking as a literal foot length
Nike explicitly distinguishes the CM designation printed on a shoebox from the chart’s Foot Length (cm) measurement. Read the measured-foot row in the manufacturer chart. The number on the box is not permission to assume that your foot is exactly that many centimetres long.
Keep the measurement qualification with the recommendation
If your longer foot sits between two rows, apply the chart’s own instruction. Nike’s advice to size up is tied to its measured-foot chart; it is not a universal rule for every collaboration, brand or width. If a brand supplies a separate width chart, use the length and width rows together rather than solving a width problem by adding length.
Do sneaker collaborations run true to size?
There is no defensible universal “collaboration fit.” The underlying silhouette, last, padding, materials and the exact release usually matter more than the designer or partnership name.
Start with the base silhouette
Find the model name and version, not just the collaborator. A leather release, a knit version and a heavily padded edition of the same family can occupy the foot differently. adidas notes that model, materials, structure and purpose can change the feel around the midfoot and toe box; its general guidance warns that a shoe can be technically the listed size and still feel wrong.

Use model-level guidance as evidence, not a promise
GOAT’s 2024 editorial guides characterize Nike Dunk and SB Dunk models as generally true to size, with room adjustments depending on foot shape. A separate Air Jordan 1 guide also treats true to size as a starting point while discussing wider and narrower feet. Those are marketplace editorial assessments for the named model families, not a guarantee for an unnamed collaboration or a substitute for the current release’s chart.
Reject automatic half-size rules
“Always size up for collabs” and “always size down for this designer” are shortcuts without enough information. A half-size change may be sensible when the manufacturer chart places the longer foot between rows, when a model-specific source documents a consistent fit issue, or when the listing identifies a width limitation. Without one of those reasons, changing size can create a new problem: extra heel movement, excess toe room or a compressed forefoot.

What do W, GS, PS, TD and Asia Sizing mean on a listing?
These labels identify sizing systems or age categories, so read them before interpreting the number. StockX says its sneaker listings use US sizes and provide a chart on each product page, but the category indicator still changes what the number means.
| Label | What it indicates | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| W | Women’s sizing, often used beside a US number | Do not silently read a women’s number as a men’s number; confirm the listing’s chart. |
| GS | Grade School youth sizing | StockX warns that GS 7Y is not men’s 7. The youth category has its own scale and intended size range. |
| PS | Preschool sizing | It is an age-category designation, not an alternate spelling of adult sizing. |
| TD | Toddler sizing | Use the toddler chart or category shown for the product rather than an adult conversion. |
| Asia Sizing | A regional sizing designation shown on some listings | Read the product page’s chart and regional label together before bidding or buying. |
When a product is unisex, check whether the brand uses a women’s-based or men’s-based conversion. For Nike, the relevant chart is the one labeled for the product’s sizing basis, not whichever chart is easiest to find.
How should width and construction change your choice?
Length alone cannot predict comfort. Compare your measured width with the available width option and inspect how the collaboration is built.

- Wide forefoot: Look for a stated wide option or a model known to leave room at the ball of the foot. Simply buying a longer size can move the heel forward and create instability.
- Narrow foot: A roomy toe box or soft upper may allow movement even when the length is correct. Check whether the model has a secure midfoot hold.
- Stiff overlays or structured panels: These can reduce usable space around the toe box or midfoot compared with a softer version of the same silhouette.
- Thick padding or lining: Internal volume changes can make the same nominal size feel shorter or tighter.
- Foot asymmetry: Fit the longer foot first, then confirm that the shorter foot is not sliding. Lacing can fine-tune hold, but it cannot correct a fundamentally unsuitable width.
When trying a pair is permitted, adidas recommends checking that the toes can move without a large empty space, the heel does not slip and the ball of the foot is not uncomfortably compressed. Those checks are more useful than judging fit from the size number alone.
How do you verify an online listing before paying?
Read the product page as a specification sheet: exact model and version, category, regional system, width, release details and the terms that apply to that item at checkout.
Confirm the exact shoe
Record the brand, silhouette, collaboration name, model code if shown, material description and whether the pair is a revised or special construction. Fit commentary about another collaboration from the same designer is only indirect evidence. The closer the source is to the exact release, the more weight it deserves.
Read every size abbreviation
Check for W, GS, PS, TD, Asia Sizing and any wide designation before comparing the number with your measurement. On StockX, open the product-page size chart and fit notes before bidding. If the listing uses only a bare number and does not identify the category, treat that as an unresolved question rather than guessing.
Inspect the checkout-level return language
Limited and resale purchases do not automatically receive an ordinary size exchange. adidas US help information describes restricted exchanges and shorter windows for certain limited or high-demand items; verify the live terms for the specific product because policy text and eligibility can change.

GOAT’s returns policy, updated June 12, 2026, allows a return request within 30 days for eligible purchases, but excludes categories including final-sale and used items. For eligible US returns, the policy says a processing fee of up to 15 percent of the item’s price may apply. “May” is a policy maximum, not a fee charged on every return, and a return request is not the same thing as a guaranteed size exchange. Read the current policy at GOAT’s returns page.

What should you do if you are allowed to try the pair on?
Try it indoors and preserve the condition required for a return. A few careful checks are more informative than walking outside in a pair you may need to send back.
- Put on the socks you measured with and stand on a clean, dry surface.
- Check that the longest toe can move without pressing the front and that there is no large, unused gap.
- Walk slowly and confirm that the heel stays seated without painful pressure at the ball of the foot.
- Compare both feet; the longer or wider foot is the one that should determine comfort.
- Keep tags, packaging and accessories intact. GOAT cautions that creasing or altering an item while trying it on can affect return eligibility.
- Stop immediately if the seller’s policy prohibits trying on, or if the policy requires an unworn condition that you cannot preserve.
What are the most common online collaboration sizing mistakes?
Most failures come from a wrong assumption about the data, not from a mysterious collaboration effect.
- Reusing an old size across brands: A familiar number is not a measured length and does not account for different lasts or categories.
- Measuring only one foot: The shorter foot can hide the size needed by the longer one.
- Measuring barefoot when you wear thick socks: The input no longer represents the way the sneaker will be used.
- Reading the box CM mark as foot length: Nike says its shoebox CM designation differs from the chart’s Foot Length measurement.
- Converting twice: Moving from a remembered brand size to a regional conversion and then to a women’s, unisex or youth chart compounds errors.
- Ignoring width: A correct heel-to-toe number can still pinch the forefoot or allow the heel to move.
- Applying a designer-wide rule: Different silhouettes and materials from the same collaboration can fit differently.
- Assuming every return is an exchange: Final-sale, used, altered or limited items may be excluded, and a deadline can begin at delivery or purchase according to the policy.
- Trying on outdoors: Creasing, dirt or sole wear can remove the very return option that protects you from a sizing mistake.
How can you make the final size decision?
Use the following order of precedence. It keeps a strong measurement from being overridden by a weak anecdote.

What equipment do you actually need?
A flat sheet of paper, pencil, ruler or centimetre-marked measuring tape and the socks you normally wear are sufficient. A metric tape that also shows inches can make it easier to compare charts that use different units; a metric ruler is an alternative, not an additional requirement.

If you use a printable length-and-width guide, print at the specified scale and verify its calibration before placing your foot on it. New Balance’s 2026 tool states 100 percent print scale, so a printer set to “fit to page” can invalidate the measurement.
What if the exact collaboration has little fit information?
Use the manufacturer chart and your measured longer foot, then lower your confidence in any model-specific adjustment. If the release differs materially in padding, upper material or structure from the base model, treat older fit comments as background only. A listing that does not identify its sizing category, width or return eligibility leaves too many variables unresolved to justify a precise size prediction.
When two purchase options are otherwise similar, favor the one that clearly states the category, supplies the correct chart, identifies width availability and gives item-specific return terms. That choice reduces the cost of uncertainty without pretending that an online guide can reproduce an in-person fitting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I reuse the size from a previous collaboration?
Use it only as a comparison if the brand, silhouette and sizing category are the same. Keep a written record or photo of your latest measurements so an old purchase does not become the only evidence for a different model.
What should I do when a listing shows only a number and no W, GS or men’s/women’s label?
Ask the seller or platform to identify the sizing category before bidding. Without that label, the number cannot be reliably matched to a manufacturer chart, so postponing the purchase is safer than making a conversion guess.
Does a wider foot always require a longer sneaker?
No. A longer size can create heel movement and excess space at the toe. Look first for a stated width option or a model with more room at the ball of the foot, then reassess length using the chart.
How can I protect a possible return while checking fit?
Try the pair only indoors on a clean surface, keep tags and packaging together, and avoid creasing or modifying the sneaker. Stop if the seller requires an unworn condition that your inspection would breach.
