Choose an LLM API by testing the workload you plan to run—not by picking the lowest listed token price or the highest leaderboard score. Estimate cost from your real input and output volumes, compare first-token latency and generation speed at the endpoint you would deploy, then evaluate task quality on the same prompts and acceptance criteria.

Prices, model catalogs and endpoint performance change, and the same model can behave differently across providers or service configurations. Treat pricing pages and leaderboards as ways to shortlist candidates; use representative tests to decide what fits your application.

What should you compare when choosing an LLM API?

Compare four things: effective cost, responsiveness, task quality and operational fit. A provider’s headline price or a model’s benchmark score answers only part of the decision. What matters is whether the exact API endpoint can meet your application’s quality and latency requirements at an acceptable cost.

  • Effective cost: what your expected mix of input, output and cached tokens costs, including any applicable processing mode or context-length tier.
  • Responsiveness: how quickly output starts, how quickly it is generated, and how long the entire request takes under your expected conditions.
  • Task quality: whether outputs meet the requirements of your task, including formatting, tool use and the severity of errors.
  • Operational fit: whether the endpoint has the context and output limits, features, terms and deployment characteristics your application needs. Confirm these directly with the provider; the comparison pages discussed here do not establish every operational detail for every vendor.

There is no universal winner in the available comparisons. A model that is suitable for one workload may not be the best choice for another, and the reviewed evidence does not establish a single accuracy leader.

How do you estimate what your prompts will actually cost?

Start with your workload rather than a single per-token figure. Pricing can vary by input versus output, cached input, processing mode, context length and provider-specific tiers. Longer prompts and different reasoning or effort settings can also change a cost comparison.

Build an estimate from representative requests

For each common request type, estimate the average input tokens, output tokens and monthly request count. Include the long prompts and long responses that occur in practice; a short test prompt can make a candidate appear less expensive than it will be for a document-heavy workflow. If you expect cache hits, estimate their share separately rather than treating every input token as having the same price.

A basic estimate can be expressed as:

Estimated token cost = (input tokens × input rate) + (output tokens × output rate) + applicable cached-input or processing-mode charges.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the provider’s billing units and rates when calculating each term, and multiply per-request estimates by the expected monthly request volume. This is a planning estimate, not a guarantee of an invoice: actual usage, caching, model settings and applicable tiers affect the result.

Check the actual pricing dimensions

Read the current provider pricing page for the exact model and service configuration you plan to use. Check whether the listed rates distinguish input and output, whether cached input is priced differently, and whether processing mode or context length changes the rate. Do not transfer one model’s listed price to another model or endpoint without confirmation.

As a dated example, OpenAI’s official pricing page displayed GPT-6.1 Sol standard all-model rates of $1.00 per 1 million input tokens and $5.00 per 1 million output tokens when observed on October 25, 2026. The same page noted a 10% regional processing uplift for eligible models released on or after March 5, 2026, and stated that Priority processing was renamed Fast mode on July 30, 2026. These are details of that page’s October 25 snapshot, not a guarantee of current rates or a comparison with other providers. Check the live page and the terms for the model and region you intend to use before budgeting.

Third-party comparisons can help you discover candidates, but their numbers are snapshots. The 9io Engineering comparison, dated October 9, 2026, says its listed prices are as of October 8 and covers 23 models from 11 labs. LLMAPIComparison says its dataset listed 566 models and was updated October 24, 2026; it describes its prices as official list prices and recommends checking provider prices before committing spend. That site also includes sponsored third-party relay listings, which should not be mistaken for official provider APIs.

Which speed measurements matter for an API?

Speed is not one number. Measure when the response begins, how quickly the model generates after starting, and how long the full request takes to finish. The useful balance depends on whether your application needs an immediate first response, a fast completed answer, or both.

  • First-token or first-chunk latency: the wait before the API begins returning output. This matters when an interface displays streamed text as it arrives.
  • Generation throughput: the rate at which output tokens are produced, often expressed as tokens per second. This affects how long users wait for longer responses after generation starts.
  • End-to-end response time: the elapsed time until the request is complete. It captures both the wait to start and the time spent generating.

Artificial Analysis presents these as separate metrics, and its displayed values can differ across endpoints for the same model. Therefore, a model name alone does not tell you the latency you should expect from a particular API. Compare the exact provider and endpoint, and test in the intended region and at the concurrency you expect. A leaderboard’s observed values can narrow the field, but they do not establish performance for your own traffic.

How can you compare model accuracy fairly?

Define quality for your task, then compare candidates using the same evaluation prompts, settings and criteria. A benchmark result is interpretable only alongside its benchmark, version, evaluation harness and prompt setup; scores from different leaderboards may not be directly comparable.

Set acceptance criteria before testing

Decide what a successful response must do. Depending on your application, that may include factual correctness, adherence to instructions, valid structured output, reliable tool use or avoiding a particular class of severe error. Record which failures are unacceptable instead of relying only on an average score that could conceal them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use one consistent evaluation set

Run the same representative prompts through every shortlisted endpoint using consistent model settings. Include ordinary cases and difficult cases that reflect real use. If the application requires structured output or tool calls, include those tasks and check whether the response is valid and usable—not only whether its prose looks plausible.

Compare benchmark scores within one leaderboard when possible, because evaluation harnesses can materially move results. Use external scores to shortlist, not to declare a winner across unrelated setups. The reviewed evidence does not include a controlled first-party benchmark of the candidates, so it supports no universal accuracy ranking.

Does the API provider matter if the model is the same?

Yes. A model can be offered through more than one provider, and the endpoint affects the service configuration you are evaluating. Artificial Analysis’s leaderboard shows provider-specific rows with different displayed latency and cost values for a given model, so compare the actual endpoint you expect to deploy rather than treating the model label as the whole specification.

For a fair comparison, record the provider, endpoint, region and relevant configuration alongside the model name. Keep those details fixed during your evaluation where possible. If you later switch providers or change endpoint settings, retest: an earlier result does not establish that the new configuration has the same cost or responsiveness.

What is a practical process for selecting an API?

Use a staged comparison so that broad requirements narrow the field before you spend time evaluating every candidate. The sequence below is a decision workflow, not a claim that a controlled test has been conducted here.

  1. Define acceptance thresholds. Write down the minimum quality, response-time and operational requirements the application must meet. Include failure severity, output-format requirements and any tool-use needs relevant to your task.
  2. Describe the workload. Gather representative prompt and response lengths, request volume, expected cache hit rates and the reasoning or effort settings you plan to use. Separate materially different request types instead of hiding them in one average.
  3. Estimate effective cost. Apply current rates for the exact model and configuration to the workload estimates. Include applicable cached-input, processing-mode and context-length charges; check provider terms rather than assuming a comparison snapshot remains current.
  4. Shortlist candidates. Use pricing pages and comparable leaderboard data to remove options that clearly do not meet your requirements. For speed, note first-token latency, throughput and total response time separately.
  5. Run a consistent quality evaluation. Send the same representative prompts and settings to each finalist. Score outputs against your predefined criteria, and inspect important failures rather than relying on one aggregate result.
  6. Test the intended deployment configuration. Measure the chosen endpoint in the intended region and at expected concurrency. Record completion time and quality as well as time to first output.
  7. Choose by trade-off, not a single ranking. Compare the measured quality, responsiveness and estimated workload cost against the thresholds from the first step. If none meets them, revise the shortlist or requirements rather than calling the least-bad score a universal winner.

What should you verify before committing?

Pricing, catalog entries, leaderboard rows and endpoint latency are volatile. OpenAI’s pricing page is primary evidence for the rates and billing notes it displays for OpenAI; it does not establish competitors’ prices. Artificial Analysis is useful for its displayed provider metrics, but those rows are changing observations rather than a promise about your workload. The 9io Engineering comparison is secondary synthesis, while LLMAPIComparison is a daily-updated cost-oriented listing that includes sponsored relay entries.

Before setting a budget or moving an application into production, verify the live rate and service terms directly with the provider. Confirm the exact model and endpoint, billing categories, context and output limits, available features and deployment constraints. Revisit the estimate when your prompts, traffic mix or configuration change; a pricing snapshot is not a durable contract.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does an LLM API cost per token, and how do I calculate my prompt cost?

There is no single per-token rate that applies across models and usage types: providers may price input, output and cached input differently. For a particular request, count tokens in each applicable category and multiply by that model’s current rate using the provider’s billing units.

Can I compare AI model benchmark scores from different websites?

Treat cross-site score comparisons cautiously unless the benchmark, version, prompts and evaluation setup match. Even a well-known score may not predict performance on your own task, so use it to find candidates and validate them with the same evaluation set.

Why does the same LLM have different API speed or cost on different providers?

Provider leaderboard entries can show different latency and cost for the same model because the endpoint and service configuration are part of what is being measured. A result for one provider’s endpoint should not be assumed to describe another endpoint with the same model name.
