Organize Streamlabs Video Editor media with project folders and subfolders, preserve an existing folder hierarchy by uploading a local folder, and use sorting or the Jump To bar to find assets. For outside contributions, create an upload link from the project’s Upload Links tab.

Choose a starting point: organize before or after upload

Use the local-folder upload route if your files are already arranged on your computer and you want to keep that hierarchy. If you are adding individual assets or deciding on an arrangement as you work, upload them to the project and place them in project folders afterward.

Starting point Best when What happens
Upload a local folder Your files already have a useful folder structure. Streamlabs says uploaded folders retain their folder structure.
Upload individual media, then sort it You are adding selected files or want to organize within the project. Add media to the project, then move files into folders or subfolders.

These steps follow Streamlabs’ official “Media Management in Video Editor” and upload guides, both last updated September 5, 2025. Interface labels can change, so check the current project view if a control has moved.

Create folders and move media

  1. Create a folder: In the project space, right-click and choose New Folder. Choose whether downloads are allowed or the folder should remain private, enter a name, then select Create. You can make subfolders as well.
  2. Add files to a folder: Drag a file onto the folder. To select multiple files, the guide says to hold Shift and Command/Control while clicking, then drag the selection to the folder.
  3. Copy items across your account if needed: Open the folder’s three-dot menu and choose Copy To to copy a folder or multiple files.

Streamlabs does not prescribe a naming convention or folder taxonomy. As a practical approach, group assets by the way you will look for them later—for example, project stage, scene, or asset type—and use names that distinguish similar versions. Keep the structure shallow enough that collaborators can browse it easily.

Upload media while preserving local folders

  1. Open the project where the media belongs.
  2. Choose one of the documented upload routes: drag media from a local folder into the project, select the plus sign next to Media, or right-click and choose Add Media.
  3. If preserving a hierarchy matters, upload the local folder rather than selecting files one at a time. Streamlabs says the folder structure is retained automatically.
  4. Let processing continue in the background. You can pause or cancel an upload if necessary.

Browse, sort, and search for assets

Use folders for durable organization

Folders and subfolders are the best fit when you want assets to remain grouped as the project grows. Drag files into the appropriate folder level rather than relying on a temporary sort order.

Use list or tile view to scan

Switch between list and tile views with the view control. Choose the layout that makes the current task easier: a list for scanning names, or tiles for visually browsing media.

Sort for quick scanning

Streamlabs documents sorting by date, name, file, or folder. Use the sort that helps answer the immediate question—for instance, name when looking for a known filename or date when reviewing recent additions. Sorting changes how items are displayed; it does not replace placing them in folders.

Search known projects or files with Jump To

Use the Jump To bar at the top left of the project view to search for a project or file within the account. It is useful when you know what you are looking for and browsing folders would take longer.

Collect media from collaborators

  1. Open the project’s Upload Links tab and create an upload link.
  2. Set an expiration date or passphrase if appropriate for the contribution.
  3. Share the link with the contributor and ask them to use it for the files they are providing.
  4. When the link is no longer needed, activate or deactivate it, or delete it.
  5. After contributions arrive, sort the files into the project’s folders so incoming uploads do not become a separate, hard-to-find pile.

Upload links collect project media; they are not a substitute for the project’s folder and sorting tools.

Troubleshooting organization and uploads

  • A folder is not where you expected: Check whether you dropped the file onto the intended folder level or a subfolder. Drag it to the correct folder.
  • An upload is still processing: Upload processing can continue in the background. Check the upload state; pause or cancel it if needed, then resume or retry through the project’s upload controls.
  • Your uploaded files lost their intended grouping: If you selected items individually, they may not reflect the local hierarchy you had in mind. Upload the local folder to preserve its structure, or create folders in the project and move the files into them.
  • You cannot find a known item by browsing: Try the Jump To bar for a project or file, or change the view and sort order.
  • A collaborator can no longer upload: Check whether the link is active and whether its expiration date has passed. Create or reactivate a suitable link as needed.

Or let it run in the cloud

Streamlabs Video Editor organizes project media; if your separate goal is to keep uploaded videos live on a YouTube channel around the clock, StreamNeo is a different tool for that job. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos streamed to YouTube, not a camera-based live broadcast. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.
