You can move a live WordPress site to Google Cloud with little or no interruption by treating the project as a staged migration: inventory the existing site, create and verify a complete files-and-database backup, build a parallel Google Cloud environment, restore a copy for testing, and change DNS only after the new site passes functional, URL, performance, and crawl checks. Compute Engine is usually the simplest lift-and-shift target. GKE with Cloud SQL fits teams prepared to operate Kubernetes, while Cloud Run requires a deliberate container, database, and persistent-media design. The DNS change is the traffic switch; it is separate from copying the site.

What does a WordPress migration to Google Cloud actually include?

A complete move has two inseparable parts: the WordPress directory and the MySQL database. The directory contains core files, wp-content, uploaded media, plugins, themes, and configuration. The database contains posts, pages, users, settings, menus, plugin data, and rewrite information. Copying only the web directory produces an incomplete site, and importing only the database leaves the application without its code and media.

There are also operational dependencies that do not live in either backup: DNS records, HTTPS behavior, scheduled jobs, email delivery, payment callbacks, external integrations, firewall rules, and cache configuration. Record these before changing anything. The hosting move and the DNS change are separate phases, so you can test the destination while visitors continue using the old host.

Which Google Cloud architecture should host WordPress?

Choose the platform according to traffic pattern, persistence requirements, and the amount of infrastructure your team can operate. There is no universal speed or cost winner in the available guidance; the right choice minimizes operational risk for your site.

Option Best fit Persistence and media Scaling model Operational considerations Migration and rollback profile
Compute Engine Low-to-medium traffic and a conventional VM or hosting-account move WordPress files live on the instance; database can run on the VM or connect to Cloud SQL Single-instance deployment with basic scalability Closest lift-and-shift; you manage the virtual machine, runtime, updates, and backups Generally the simplest restore and rollback because the application remains in one familiar environment
GKE with Cloud SQL Teams that already want Kubernetes operations and a managed MySQL database WordPress data uses a Persistent Disk-backed PersistentVolumeClaim; Cloud SQL stores MySQL data Kubernetes workloads behind an external load balancer You operate Kubernetes resources, persistent volumes, networking, IAM, and database connectivity More components mean a more involved migration and rollback, but the architecture separates application and database concerns
Cloud Run Containerized WordPress with variable traffic and a need for high scalability Requires an explicit design for writable media and database connectivity because the service is container-based Serverless scaling for container instances You must build and maintain the image and solve persistent media storage, secrets, and Cloud SQL connections Image revisions can support controlled releases, but a conventional file-copy restore is not sufficient without a media strategy

When is Compute Engine the sensible default?

Use Compute Engine when your current site is a traditional server installation and you want the fewest architectural changes. It is the closest lift-and-shift path: restore the files, point WordPress at MySQL, reproduce the web and PHP runtime, and validate the site on a temporary hostname. This approach is usually easiest for a small team that does not need Kubernetes or serverless scaling.

When does GKE with Cloud SQL make sense?

GKE is appropriate when your team is prepared to run Kubernetes and wants the official WordPress pattern of a container, a Persistent Disk-backed PersistentVolumeClaim, Cloud SQL for MySQL, and an external load balancer. It adds moving parts—pods, services, volumes, ingress or load-balancer configuration, IAM, and database networking—so adopt it for operational reasons rather than as a shortcut.

What must be designed before choosing Cloud Run?

Cloud Run can scale containerized WordPress for variable traffic, but a normal server’s writable filesystem assumptions do not transfer automatically. Decide where uploads and other persistent media will live, how the container receives secrets, and how it connects to MySQL. The product description identifies Cloud Run as an option but does not provide a complete WordPress migration runbook, so do not cut over until those persistence and connectivity details are proven in staging.

How do I inventory a WordPress site before moving it?

Create a written inventory and freeze the scope before building the destination. The inventory becomes your acceptance checklist and exposes dependencies that a file copy will miss.

  • WordPress core version, PHP version, web-server assumptions, and HTTPS configuration.
  • Every active and inactive plugin, theme, custom code component, and license or API integration.
  • Total uploads volume, database engine, database size, and unusually large tables.
  • Scheduled jobs, including WordPress cron events and any host-level cron replacements.
  • Email delivery, contact forms, payment callbacks, webhooks, search, comments, and other write operations.
  • DNS records, subdomains, redirects, canonical URL behavior, XML sitemaps, and robots.txt.
  • Cache layers, CDN or proxy behavior, firewall rules, administrator accounts, and service credentials.

Record representative URLs—home page, posts, pages, category archives, search results, media files, forms, and checkout or account flows where applicable. These URLs provide a before-and-after comparison rather than relying on a single home-page check.

How do I make a backup that can really restore the site?

Export the database and copy the complete WordPress directory, then prove that both can be restored. Keep an untouched rollback copy at the old host or in separate protected storage while the migration is in progress.

  1. Export the entire MySQL database, including all tables and the character-set and collation information required by the installation.
  2. Copy the full WordPress directory, not just the public root. Include wp-content, uploads, plugins, themes, core files, and the configuration file.
  3. Preserve file ownership, permissions, symbolic links, and any server-side configuration that the application depends on.
  4. Record the backup timestamp, database size, file count, and uploads size so you can detect an incomplete transfer.
  5. Restore the backup into an isolated test environment and confirm that the site loads, an administrator can sign in, media opens, and a database write succeeds.

A backup that has never been restored is only an assumption. Do not overwrite the untouched rollback copy with a later export.

How do I build a staging target in Google Cloud?

Build the destination in a separate project or clearly isolated environment and keep it private until testing is complete. Create the required project resources, IAM permissions, firewall rules, runtime, storage, and database before importing production data.

Compute Engine staging

Create a VM with a supported operating system, web server, PHP runtime, and WordPress prerequisites that match the source closely enough to reduce compatibility surprises. Attach durable storage for the application and uploads. Decide whether MySQL remains on the VM or the application connects to Cloud SQL; in the latter case, use a supported private-IP, public-IP, or Auth Proxy method and configure the corresponding network and credentials.

GKE staging

Follow the WordPress container pattern with a Persistent Disk-backed PersistentVolumeClaim for WordPress data, Cloud SQL for MySQL, and an external load balancer. Grant only the IAM permissions required by the workloads, and verify that pods can mount the volume and reach the database before restoring the site.

Cloud Run staging

Build the container image with the required PHP and web-server configuration, inject secrets through the platform’s secret mechanism, and connect the service to MySQL. Test uploads, plugin writes, cache behavior, and every operation that assumes a persistent local filesystem. A container that serves the front page but loses uploads or settings on a new instance is not ready for production.

How do I restore WordPress and configure the database?

Import the database, copy the files, and then make the smallest deliberate configuration changes needed for the new environment.

  1. Load the database export into the destination MySQL instance and verify that the expected tables and row counts are present.
  2. Copy the WordPress directory or build the container image from the verified files. Confirm that uploads, plugins, themes, and custom code are present.
  3. Update wp-config.php or the container’s environment settings with the destination database host, database name, user, and password. Keep secrets out of source control.
  4. Set filesystem permissions and the web-server document root, then confirm that PHP can read the application and WordPress can write where it must.
  5. Use a temporary hostname or protected test endpoint for validation. Do not expose the staging copy to search engines or public users before it is ready.

Cloud SQL is managed MySQL, not a drop-in replacement for application configuration. The WordPress runtime still needs correct IAM, network access, credentials, TLS or proxy settings where applicable, and connection limits that match the workload.

How do I change domains without breaking URLs or SEO?

First decide whether the public domain is staying the same. A same-domain migration mainly changes hosting and DNS; a domain change also requires a controlled URL update and a search-migration plan.

When the domain changes, update WordPress’s home and siteurl values deliberately, then update media references, plugin settings, menus, and rewrite rules. WordPress data often contains serialized values, so never run a blind text replacement across the database. Use serialization-aware tooling or a procedure that understands serialized PHP data.

“Never, ever, change the contents of the GUID column, under any circumstances.” — WordPress.org

Leave the guid column unchanged even when the domain changes. Validate canonical tags, internal links, attachment URLs, redirects, XML sitemaps, and robots.txt. Compare a representative URL set and their images between the old and new environments before changing DNS.

What should I test before changing DNS?

Test the staging endpoint as if it were production, including writes and third-party callbacks. A successful page load is only the first check.

  • Front-end pages, post and page templates, category and tag archives, search, pagination, and 404 handling.
  • Administrator login, editing, publishing, revisions, autosave, media upload, image generation, and deletion.
  • Forms, email delivery, comments, user registration, ecommerce or payment callbacks, and external webhooks.
  • WordPress cron events and any scheduled jobs that replaced default cron behavior.
  • Redirect chains, canonical URLs, XML sitemaps, robots.txt, HTTPS certificates, mixed-content warnings, and security headers.
  • Database writes, connection recovery, cache invalidation, origin health, latency, and error logs.
  • Representative URLs and images side by side with the source site, including old media paths and deep links.

Keep a defect list with an owner and a pass/fail result. Do not schedule the cutover while a known issue can prevent publishing, lose media, break a callback, or block crawling.

How do I switch DNS with minimal downtime?

DNS is the traffic switch, not the migration itself. Reduce the DNS TTL in advance where appropriate, schedule the change, and keep both environments available during propagation.

  1. Choose a low-traffic maintenance window and announce any brief write freeze required to keep the final database export consistent.
  2. Take a final database export and synchronize files or uploads changed since the staging copy was created.
  3. Confirm that the new endpoint serves the production domain correctly, including HTTPS, redirects, canonical URLs, and host-based configuration.
  4. Change the authoritative DNS records to the new endpoint. Do not delete the old records or shut down the old host yet.
  5. Monitor requests to both hosts. Test from multiple networks and check that users and Googlebot receive the intended content.

Google Search Central’s sequence is to prepare and test the new infrastructure, change DNS, monitor the old and new hosting, and shut down the old host only after users and Googlebot are being served correctly. DNS caches do not expire simultaneously, so expect a period in which different visitors reach different endpoints.

What should I monitor after the cutover?

Keep explicit rollback criteria and watch the new environment throughout the DNS propagation and stabilization window.

  • HTTP error rates, PHP and web-server logs, uptime, latency, and origin health.
  • Cloud SQL connection count, failed queries, slow queries, storage, and backup status.
  • Queue processing, cron execution, email delivery, payment callbacks, forms, comments, and media uploads.
  • Search Console coverage, indexing anomalies, crawl errors, canonical selection, and sitemap processing.
  • Real-user reports for missing images, login failures, redirects, checkout, and slow pages.

Define rollback triggers before the switch—for example, unrecoverable database errors, failed publishing, broken payments, or widespread 5xx responses. If a trigger is reached, point DNS back to the old host, preserve logs, and diagnose from the last known-good backup rather than improvising changes on both systems.

When can I retire the old host?

Retire it only after the monitoring window is complete, traffic and Googlebot are reaching the new endpoint correctly, and the rollback decision has expired. Preserve verified backups, migration logs, DNS history, and the final configuration. Remove obsolete credentials, firewall rules, service accounts, and scheduled jobs before decommissioning the old environment.

How do I troubleshoot common migration failures?

The site shows a database connection error

Check the database host, name, user, and password first, then verify IAM permissions, firewall rules, private or public routing, and any Auth Proxy or TLS configuration. Confirm that Cloud SQL is reachable from the actual runtime, not merely from an administrator workstation.

Images or uploads return 404 errors

Verify that the complete uploads tree was copied, that paths and permissions are correct, and that the web server or container maps the expected document root. On Cloud Run, revisit the persistent-media design; local container storage cannot be treated as the permanent uploads directory.

Links redirect to the old site or the wrong scheme

Inspect home, siteurl, reverse-proxy HTTPS detection, rewrite rules, canonical tags, and plugin settings. If a domain changed, repeat the URL update with serialization-safe handling and leave GUID values untouched.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Publishing or cron jobs fail after the move

Run a real publish test, inspect PHP and application logs, and verify that scheduled jobs exist in the destination’s runtime. A host-level cron entry does not automatically follow a VM move, container deployment, or Kubernetes workload.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should I keep the old WordPress host online?

Keep it available through DNS propagation and your defined monitoring window, then extend that period if logs or Search Console show inconsistent delivery. Do not delete the rollback copy when you decommission the server; retain backups and migration records separately.

Can I migrate WordPress while visitors are still editing content?

You can copy most data in advance, but a final synchronized database export is needed to avoid losing posts, comments, orders, or form submissions created during the move. Schedule a short write freeze or use a separately validated synchronization process for the final cutover.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Cloud SQL required for WordPress on Google Cloud?

No. Compute Engine can host the database with the application, while GKE guidance pairs WordPress with Cloud SQL. Cloud SQL is useful as managed MySQL, but it still requires correct network access, IAM, credentials, and connection configuration.

Will changing DNS automatically preserve my WordPress URLs?

If the public domain and URL scheme stay the same, DNS changes the endpoint without changing the URLs. URLs can still break if the new server has incorrect rewrites, HTTPS detection, document roots, media paths, or plugin configuration.

What is the safest way to test a staging copy without indexing it?

Use a temporary hostname or protected endpoint and keep it out of public search access while testing. Once DNS points to production, verify robots directives, canonical URLs, and sitemaps so the temporary address is not treated as the preferred site.
