Microsoft provides ways to export Teams content, but an export file is not automatically an Element or Matrix room history. Element’s Teams Bridge is a separate, ongoing connection for existing customers—not a documented way to import an archive—and Element says it is no longer available for purchase.
If your goal is to keep old messages searchable inside Element, first confirm that a destination provider or custom migration can ingest your specific export and demonstrate the result. If that is not possible, preserve the Teams export as a separate archive.
First decide what “migrate” means
These outcomes require different approaches:
- Move historical messages into Element: The messages become part of destination rooms and can be searched there. The reviewed official documentation does not describe a direct Teams-archive importer for Element.
- Keep accessing Teams conversations from Element: A bridge connects the services; that is not the same as importing a static archive as historical Matrix messages.
- Keep records outside Element: Retain an export for offline access, compliance, or reference. This preserves a separate archive rather than making the messages native Element room history.
What Microsoft lets you export from Teams
Microsoft documents both an admin-center export option for customers switching from Teams and API-based extraction. Availability, licensing, permissions, and export scope can change, so check the current options in your tenant and confirm what your account can access. Microsoft’s Teams Export APIs documentation covers API extraction, while its switching-export page describes the admin-center option.
Admin-center switching export
Microsoft describes a tool in the Teams admin center for small and medium-sized customers switching from Teams. The documentation states that it permits unlimited exports during a 90-day period. Treat that as the stated export window, not a guarantee of eligibility for every tenant; verify the option and its terms in your admin center before relying on it.

Teams Export APIs
The APIs cover 1:1 chats, group chats, meeting chats, and channel messages. API access has licensing and permission requirements. Because relevant calls can retrieve sent and received messages for a user, exporting for every user may yield duplicates; plan to filter and deduplicate the results.
Neither option, by itself, establishes that the resulting files or API data can be loaded into Element as room history. Microsoft export describes getting data out of Teams, not importing it into Element.

Why Element’s Teams Bridge is not a history importer
Element’s Teams Bridge documentation states, “The Teams bridge is no longer available for purchase,” and says the documentation is for existing customers. Its documented workflow connects a Teams team to Element-hosted services: users authenticate to Teams through the bridge bot, and the team appears as an Element space with channels as rooms. The documentation also lists private channels as unsupported.
This is a connected-service workflow, not evidence of a supported importer for a previously exported Teams archive. If your organization is an existing customer considering the bridge, confirm its current availability and capabilities with Element rather than assuming it will transfer old messages.

Do not mistake Microsoft’s Graph import API for an Element route
Microsoft’s Graph message-import documentation describes importing third-party messages into Teams. Its process involves preparing and mapping data to Teams, using migration mode on destination chats or channels, importing messages, and completing the migration. It does not provide an importer into Element.
The documented Teams import has specific constraints: it uses app-only application permissions, including Teamwork.Migrate.All; original-author attribution must identify a user in the authenticated tenant; and supplied historical timestamps must be later than the target conversation’s creation, not in the future, and unique to millisecond precision within that conversation. Microsoft’s overview also states a limit of five import requests per second per channel. These details apply to importing into Teams, not to Element.

Microsoft lists rich text, reply chains, reactions (up to 250), mentions, emojis, code snippets, quotes, announcements, stickers, and inline images among the supported Teams-import content. Videos and cross-posts between channels are out of scope; inline images are the only media type supported by that import schema. Those are Teams-import scope statements, not guarantees about any Teams-to-Element conversion.
How to assess a Teams-to-Element migration route
- Check your export eligibility. In the Teams admin center, look for the switching-export option and confirm your tenant’s eligibility and export window. For API extraction, verify licensing, permissions, user coverage, retention settings, and filters against Microsoft’s current documentation.
- Preserve the original export. Keep an unchanged copy and record when and how it was obtained. Treat this as your source record while evaluating any conversion.
- Inventory the content you need. Separate 1:1, group, meeting, and channel conversations. Specify expectations for authors, timestamps, replies, reactions, edits, attachments, shared-file links, retention, and access controls. Export coverage does not establish that an importer will preserve those properties.
- Require a representative ingestion demonstration. Ask the destination provider or migration developer to show how your actual export is brought into Element or Matrix. Compare message counts, identity mapping, dates, thread structure, attachments, searchability, and permissions against the source.
- Document what is not preserved. Ask specifically about encrypted content, edits, reactions, links, attachments, and auditability. Do not assume an HTML or JSON export can simply be uploaded as Matrix room history, or that a feature is preserved unless the provider demonstrates it.
- Keep an independent archive if ingestion is unavailable. Element documents exporting existing Element room histories to HTML, plain text, or JSON, including attachments, but that is an Element-to-file export—not a Teams-to-Element import. See Element’s message-export documentation.
