To migrate Drupal to Google Cloud safely, first inventory the site and its dependencies, choose a runtime that matches the existing architecture, move the database and files with a tested synchronization plan, then validate a staging copy before a controlled DNS cutover. Compute Engine is usually the least disruptive lift-and-shift option; GKE or Cloud Run make sense when you are prepared to containerize and redesign operational practices. Cloud SQL with Database Migration Service can provide managed database operations and low-downtime replication for supported engines. Keep Drupal’s Composer, configuration-management, Drush, and deployment workflow intact, and keep the original environment available until the new site has passed its observation window.

This guide gives a practical runbook for assessment, Google Cloud setup, runtime selection, code and database migration, file handling, testing, cutover, and rollback. Migration duration and cost cannot be quoted generically: database size, traffic, region, architecture, downtime requirements, and the level of operational control all change the answer.

What does a Drupal migration to Google Cloud actually include?

A Drupal move is more than copying a web directory and importing a SQL file. You are transferring an application estate: code, Composer dependencies, exported configuration, database content, public and private files, scheduled jobs, queues, search indexes, integrations, certificates, DNS, email, analytics, and operational telemetry. A migration is complete only when those dependencies behave correctly in the new environment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate the work into two tracks:

  • Infrastructure transfer: recreate the runtime, network, identity, storage, database, observability, and deployment process in Google Cloud.
  • Content or version transformation: change Drupal major versions, data models, field structures, or source formats with Drupal’s Migrate API rather than treating the change as a file copy.

Keeping these tracks separate makes failures diagnosable. A database replication problem is different from a migration-plugin mapping error, and each needs its own test and rollback decision.

How should I assess the existing Drupal estate?

Begin with a written inventory and dependency map. Google’s migration guidance describes assessment as crucial to success and calls for workload inventory, dependency discovery, a proof of concept, total-cost calculation, strategy and tool selection, a timeline, and plan validation. Do this before creating production resources.

Record the application and platform versions

  • Drupal core version and update status.
  • Every contributed and custom module, theme, patch, and library.
  • PHP version, web server, PHP extensions, queue workers, and command-line tools.
  • Database engine and version, extensions, collation, SQL modes, users, schemas, and approximate data size.
  • Composer version, composer.json, and the committed composer.lock.
  • Drush version and every recurring command or deployment hook.

Map state and dependencies

  • Public files, private files, temporary files, generated image styles, backups, and user-uploaded content.
  • Cron schedules, queue consumers, indexing jobs, and search services.
  • Payment, identity, marketing, analytics, email, webhook, media, and ERP integrations.
  • DNS zones, TLS certificates, CDN or reverse-proxy behavior, firewall allowlists, and outbound network requirements.
  • Logging, metrics, alerting, backup schedules, retention rules, and incident contacts.
  • Traffic patterns, peak periods, administrator workflows, and any contractual maintenance window.

Measure what will drive the design

Capture database size and write rate, file volume and growth, concurrent users, request and queue patterns, and the regions from which users connect. These measurements determine whether a one-time dump is safe, whether continuous replication is needed, how much storage to provision, and which region and scaling model are sensible. Produce a cost and total-cost-of-ownership estimate that includes standby capacity, backups, logs, network transfer, support, and engineering time rather than only the web-server line item.

Prove the plan with a small migration

Clone the site into a non-production project and migrate a representative database subset and file sample. Verify that the application boots, Composer dependencies resolve, configuration imports, users can authenticate, media renders, cron and queues run, and integrations reach their endpoints. Record every manual action; anything required in the proof of concept must become automation or an explicit runbook step.

What Google Cloud foundation should be ready before Drupal arrives?

Build the landing zone before migrating application data. Use a dedicated project or an agreed folder and project structure, with billing and ownership established. Separate production, staging, and migration work where your governance requires it.

Foundation checklist

  • Organization, folders, projects, billing account, budgets, and budget-alert recipients.
  • IAM roles and groups based on least privilege; separate human access from service-account access.
  • A region and zone strategy that meets latency, residency, availability, and disaster-recovery requirements.
  • VPC networks, subnets, routes, firewall rules, private connectivity, and controlled administrative access.
  • Service accounts for deployment, migration, backups, monitoring, and runtime tasks.
  • Secret storage and rotation for database credentials, API keys, signing keys, and SMTP credentials; do not commit secrets to Drupal configuration or a container image.
  • Centralized logging, metrics, alerting, audit logs, and an agreed escalation path.
  • Backup schedules, retention, restore testing, and a documented recovery point and recovery time objective.

Google’s setup checklist treats organization and billing, project structure, security, logging and monitoring, and networking as foundation phases. Complete those controls before production data is copied; retrofitting them after cutover creates avoidable exposure and downtime.

Should Drupal run on Compute Engine, GKE, or Cloud Run?

Choose the runtime from the current architecture and the team’s operating model, not from a generic “cloud-native” preference. Compute Engine and Migrate to Virtual Machines suit a VM-based site that needs maximum compatibility. GKE or Cloud Run suit a team that is ready to build and operate container images and externalize state.

Option Best fit Compatibility and operations Scaling and state considerations Migration implications
Compute Engine Existing VM-based Drupal with limited refactoring Highest compatibility and operating-system control; you continue to manage VM patching, capacity, web workers, and most of the traditional stack. Scale with VM sizing or groups and design storage, sessions, and shared files deliberately. Lowest application change. Migrate to Virtual Machines can move multiple VM instances and their data and lets you test applications before migration.
GKE Teams already operating Kubernetes or needing its controls Container portability and detailed orchestration, balanced against cluster, networking, security, and upgrade operations. Pods can scale, but Drupal’s database, files, sessions, queues, and cron still need durable and coordinated services. Requires a reproducible container image, manifests, health checks, secrets, and a plan for every stateful dependency.
Cloud Run Stateless containerized web workloads where managed platform operations are valuable Less infrastructure to operate, but the container and deployment model impose stricter assumptions than a traditional VM. Request-driven scaling requires external treatment of database, files, sessions, cron, and workers; validate background processing and connection limits. Most replatforming work. Containerize first, prove Drupal behavior under scaling and revisions, and keep state outside the serving container.

For a direct lift-and-shift, Compute Engine is generally the shortest path. Migrate to Containers supports replatforming to GKE, GKE Autopilot, GKE Enterprise, or Cloud Run when the benefits justify refactoring. Do not select a container target merely to avoid learning the existing VM; the migration is successful only when deployment, storage, scheduled work, observability, and recovery are simpler or more reliable for your team.

How do I prepare Drupal code and configuration?

Work from a non-production clone and make the deployment reproducible. Drupal’s deployment guidance is to update core with Composer on a local copy, test it, then repeat the controlled deployment on the server. The same principle applies to a cloud migration: build one known artifact and promote it through environments.

  1. Check out the exact production code into a migration branch and document the current Drupal, PHP, Composer, and Drush versions.
  2. Update Drupal core and contributed modules locally with Composer only after reviewing compatibility and running the site’s automated checks.
  3. Commit both composer.json and composer.lock. The lock file prevents staging and production from silently resolving different dependency versions.
  4. Export Drupal configuration with the project’s established configuration-management workflow. Do not rely on clicking settings manually in the new environment.
  5. Keep environment-specific values—database credentials, hostnames, salts, API keys, and file paths—outside the shared code and inject them through the runtime’s secret and environment-variable mechanism.
  6. Run database updates in a controlled deployment step with Drush or the project’s existing release script. Record the commands and expected output.
  7. Build the same release artifact for staging and production. A rebuild that resolves dependencies differently at cutover is not the same release you tested.

Drupal’s documented sequence is to update locally, test, deploy the lock file or repeat Composer steps on the server, run Drupal updates, and use Drush and Git for configuration management. Preserve that workflow instead of introducing a cloud-specific set of undocumented edits.

What is the safest way to migrate the Drupal database?

First identify the source engine, version, extensions, collation, SQL modes, users, data size, and write rate. Then choose between a direct dump and restore or a managed replication path. Cloud SQL paired with Database Migration Service is the managed option for supported relational engines when you need an initial snapshot followed by ongoing replication and minimal downtime.

Approach Engine compatibility Downtime and synchronization Rollback and operations
Dump and restore Works when the destination accepts a compatible dump and you can resolve version, extension, collation, and SQL-mode differences yourself. Usually requires a write freeze for the final dump and restore; the duration depends on database size and transfer speed. Simple to understand, but you own validation, repeatability, credentials, transfer security, and the final consistency check.
Database Migration Service to Cloud SQL Use only for source and destination engines supported by the service and for which the required extensions and settings are compatible. Creates an initial snapshot and ongoing replication, allowing a short final write freeze when replication lag is within your threshold. The service manages migration status and networking tasks, but you still must test application behavior, permissions, extensions, backups, and rollback.

Google describes Database Migration Service as a way to migrate data to Google Cloud; its documented workflow streamlines networking, manages the initial snapshot and ongoing replication, and reports status. It supports minimal-downtime patterns into Cloud SQL or AlloyDB for PostgreSQL for supported scenarios. Confirm engine support and prerequisites for your exact source before committing to the design.

Database runbook

  1. Provision the destination database with the required version, character set, collation, extensions, users, and network access.
  2. Configure private connectivity and firewall rules so only the migration service and approved application identities can connect.
  3. Run an initial migration or restore and compare row counts, key aggregates, sequences, permissions, and representative Drupal entities.
  4. Start continuous replication where supported. Monitor replication status and record a go/no-go lag threshold before the cutover date.
  5. Exercise the new Drupal application against a restored or replicated copy. Test reads, writes, transactions, queues, search indexing, and long-running administrative operations.
  6. At cutover, place the source Drupal site in maintenance mode or otherwise stop writes, wait for replication to catch up, and record the final source timestamp.
  7. Promote or enable the destination only after the final consistency checks pass. Keep the source database unchanged and available for the rollback window.

How should I move Drupal files and other state?

Classify every file before copying it. Public files, private files, temporary files, generated image styles, backups, and user-generated content have different durability and security requirements.

  • Public files: preserve paths and permissions expected by Drupal and verify representative URLs after transfer.
  • Private files: preserve access controls and test downloads as authenticated and unauthorized users.
  • Temporary files and caches: usually rebuild them in the target rather than spending transfer time on disposable data.
  • Generated image styles: copy them only if the regeneration cost and availability window require it; otherwise rebuild and verify styles on demand.
  • Backups: copy according to retention and recovery policy, not simply because they exist on the source server.
  • User-generated content: include uploads created during the migration window in the final synchronization plan.

Choose Cloud Storage or attached-disk designs according to the selected runtime, access pattern, durability, and security requirements. Google’s Migration Center identifies Storage Transfer Service for moving data to Cloud Storage and Transfer Appliance for very large datasets. Whichever tool you use, preserve timestamps and paths where the application depends on them, encrypt transfers, and calculate a checksum or file-count comparison for the final synchronization.

When should I use Drupal’s Migrate API instead of copying the database?

Use the Migrate API when content must be transformed: for example, a Drupal major-version change, a new content model, or an import from CSV, SQL, or JSON. A lift-and-shift with an unchanged schema normally needs database migration, not a wholesale content re-import.

Controlled content-migration method

  1. Define source, destination, field mapping, identifiers, dependencies, and an explicit treatment for missing or invalid records.
  2. Implement source and process plugins for the required CSV, SQL, or JSON inputs and keep migration definitions in version control.
  3. Run a bounded verification import first, such as drush migrate-import <id> --limit=10, and inspect entities, references, revisions, files, and logs.
  4. Disable modules that perform heavy processing during the import when the migration plan permits it; re-enable and rebuild required indexes afterward.
  5. Run the full import in dependency order, record failures, and make the operation repeatable or safely rollback-able.
  6. Compare source and destination counts and sample records before declaring the content migration complete.

Drupal’s Migrate API supports CSV, SQL, and JSON sources and a pipeline of source and process plugins. Drush Migrate Tools provides the command-line execution pattern. Do not combine an untested content transformation with a production DNS switch; prove the transformation in isolation first.

How do I build a staging environment and deployment pipeline?

Deploy a staging copy that matches production as closely as practical, then point it at a restored or replicated database snapshot. Verify settings.php, environment variables, secrets, file mounts or buckets, trusted host settings, and outbound network access before functional testing.

Staging verification

  • Anonymous and authenticated page rendering, login, password reset, roles, permissions, and administration.
  • Forms, file uploads, private-file downloads, image styles, redirects, canonical URLs, and sitemap behavior.
  • Cron, queues, search indexing, cache rebuilds, mail delivery, webhooks, and third-party integrations.
  • PHP error logs, Drupal watchdog events, web-server responses, database connections, and alerting.
  • Backup creation and restoration into an isolated test target.

For containerized targets, Cloud Deploy can promote releases with approvals and notifications and can roll back a previously successful release to GKE or Cloud Run. Its delivery pipeline requires container images and manifests, a Skaffold configuration, execution permissions, and the target deployment setup. Keep image tags immutable, require an approval before production, and make the exact release, configuration version, and database state visible to the approver.

What must I test before the production cutover?

Do not call a migration tested because the homepage loads. Use a written checklist and record pass, fail, evidence, and owner for each item.

  • Functional: key landing pages, search, forms, checkout or other business workflows, administration, authentication, and permissions.
  • Content integrity: entity counts, revisions, taxonomy references, media, private files, aliases, redirects, and representative recently edited content.
  • Performance and capacity: cache behavior, logged-in and anonymous response patterns, database connection limits, queue throughput, and scaling under expected peak traffic.
  • Accessibility and SEO: status codes, canonical links, metadata, robots directives, XML sitemaps, structured content, keyboard behavior, and critical templates.
  • Security: IAM, firewall exposure, secret handling, TLS, dependency status, administrative access, and audit logging.
  • Operations: cron and workers, alerts, dashboards, log retention, backups, restore procedures, and on-call notifications.
  • Resilience: failure of an application instance, database connection, storage access, queue worker, and deployment revision, with documented recovery actions.

Compare old and new responses for high-value URLs and workflows rather than relying on visual inspection alone. Resolve defects, rerun the affected checks, and hold a formal go/no-go decision with named approvers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I cut over DNS with minimal downtime?

Use a rehearsed sequence with a defined freeze, not an improvised DNS edit. The final change should be short because the data, files, release, and tests are already complete.

  1. Announce the maintenance window and confirm the rollback owner, communications channel, and observation deadline.
  2. Stop nonessential deployments and scheduled jobs that could write data during the switch.
  3. Place Drupal in maintenance mode or disable writes at the source. Confirm that user-generated content and administrative edits have stopped.
  4. Complete the final file synchronization and database replication. Verify that replication is caught up to the agreed threshold and note the final source position.
  5. Deploy the tested code, Composer lock file, exported configuration, secrets, and environment settings to the target.
  6. Switch the DNS record or load-balancer backend to the Google Cloud endpoint according to your existing traffic architecture.
  7. Warm required caches and run smoke tests: homepage, representative content, login, a write workflow, media, search, and a health endpoint.
  8. Watch error rates, latency, database connections, queue depth, logs, and business transactions. Record the time and evidence for each check.

Keep the source environment intact and prevent accidental writes to it while observing the target. Cloud Deploy’s promotion approvals, notifications, and rollback support are useful for container releases, but DNS and database rollback still require your own runbook and data-consistency decision.

What is the rollback plan if the migration fails?

Rollback is safe only while the source remains authoritative or while you have a proven way to reconcile writes made on the target. Define the trigger before cutover: unacceptable error rate, failed authentication, missing content, broken payments, data divergence, or a business owner’s no-go decision.

  1. Freeze writes on the target and preserve logs, metrics, deployment metadata, and the failing release.
  2. Restore DNS or the load-balancer backend to the source environment.
  3. Confirm that the source database and files are in the expected state and that no target-only writes must be reconciled.
  4. Re-enable source traffic and run the same smoke tests used for the forward cutover.
  5. Communicate the rollback, capture the defect, and do not retry until the corrected release or data procedure has passed staging.

For a container deployment, Cloud Deploy can roll back to a previously successful release. That application rollback does not automatically undo database schema changes or reconcile user data, so pair it with backward-compatible update sequencing, backups, and a database decision tree.

How much time and money will a Drupal migration to Google Cloud take?

No responsible generic figure exists. Database size, file volume, traffic, region, source engine, architecture, required downtime, replication choice, security controls, backup retention, and the amount of Drupal refactoring determine both schedule and cost.

Estimate at least these work packages:

  • Assessment, dependency mapping, proof of concept, and architecture design.
  • Google Cloud foundation, IAM, networking, secrets, logging, monitoring, and budgets.
  • Runtime and storage provisioning, Drupal code cleanup, containerization if applicable, and deployment automation.
  • Database and file transfer, replication monitoring, validation, and rehearsal.
  • Functional, security, load, accessibility, SEO, backup-restore, and rollback testing.
  • Cutover staffing, observation, incident reserve, and eventual decommissioning of the source.

Obtain current estimates from the Google Cloud pricing calculator and your measured workload rather than applying a per-site rule of thumb. Keep production and staging spend visible with labels, budgets, and alerts, and include the cost of running the source environment during the rollback window.

Which migration problems are most common, and how do I fix them?

The target shows a blank page or PHP errors

Check that the PHP version and extensions match Drupal and its modules, Composer dependencies were installed from the committed lock file, settings and secrets are present, and the runtime identity can read required files. Inspect Drupal and web-server logs before changing code.

Users can log in but uploads or private files fail

Verify the target file path or object-storage integration, permissions, private-file access controls, and the final synchronization of files created during the freeze. Test both authorized and unauthorized requests; a successful anonymous image request does not prove private-file security.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Content differs between old and new sites

Determine whether the difference comes from replication lag, a missed file batch, a schema update, or a Migrate API mapping. Compare counts and representative identifiers, inspect migration and database logs, and restore from a known snapshot rather than manually editing production records.

Cron, queues, or search stop working

Confirm that the scheduler and worker identities exist in the target, commands run in the expected working directory, outbound network access is allowed, and duplicate workers are not competing during the transition. Monitor queue depth and index freshness after cutover.

DNS changed but visitors still see the old site

Check authoritative records, resolver caching, CDN or load-balancer configuration, TLS certificates, and host-header or trusted-host settings. Continue monitoring both endpoints during the observation window and keep the source read-only so stale clients cannot create divergent data.

A container deployment works once but fails under scaling

Review assumptions about local filesystem state, sessions, database connections, background work, and startup time. Reproduce concurrent requests and instance replacement in staging, then externalize or redesign any state that the serving container cannot reliably retain.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should the final migration runbook contain?

Before approving production, assemble one versioned runbook with owners and timestamps for each action. It should include:

  • Architecture diagram, inventory, dependency map, and selected-runtime rationale.
  • Project, region, network, IAM, service-account, secret, backup, and alert details.
  • Exact release artifact, Composer lock-file revision, exported configuration, database schema state, and container or VM version.
  • Database engine checks, replication status commands, lag threshold, final-write freeze, and restore instructions.
  • File-transfer scope, checksum or count comparison, and treatment of caches and generated styles.
  • Staging evidence, test results, unresolved risks, approvers, maintenance notice, and go/no-go criteria.
  • DNS or load-balancer change, smoke-test commands, monitoring dashboard, observation duration, and rollback triggers.

After the observation window, update diagrams and operational documentation, review actual spend and alert noise, and decommission source resources only after backups, retention obligations, and rollback approval are satisfied.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I keep my existing Drupal domain during the Google Cloud move?

Yes. Keep the domain and change only the DNS record or load-balancer backend when the target is ready. Plan TLS certificate coverage, host-header or trusted-host settings, CDN behavior, and resolver caching so the same canonical URLs work on both sides of the transition.

What if Database Migration Service does not support my Drupal database engine?

Use a tested dump-and-restore or another engine-native replication method, provided the destination is compatible. Validate extensions, collations, SQL modes, users, sequences, and write consistency, and schedule a final write freeze long enough to complete and verify the last transfer.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I migrate a Drupal site that has continuous editorial activity?

Use continuous database replication where supported, synchronize files repeatedly or at the end of the freeze, and define exactly when editors must stop writing. A short maintenance window is still needed to confirm final replication and prevent new content from landing on the old system.

Can Cloud Run run Drupal cron and queue workers?

Treat web requests, scheduled jobs, and long-running workers as separate deployment concerns and verify each one in staging. Ensure jobs have an authenticated execution path, durable database and file access, appropriate timeouts, and monitoring for missed or duplicated work.
