You cannot generally move a running GPU container, its CUDA context, device memory, kernels, and allocations from one cloud provider to another the way a CPU-only virtual machine or pod might be moved. A practical “zero-downtime” migration is instead a controlled replacement: run a compatible copy at the destination, prove that it is ready, shift service traffic or resume training from a verified checkpoint, and retain a tested rollback. Whether this meets a no-interruption objective depends on the workload, provider pair, routing layer, storage, and acceptance thresholds you define.

Inference services can usually achieve continuous service by using parallel deployment and traffic management. Long-running training jobs need application-level checkpoints and may lose the work completed since the last checkpoint. Treat zero downtime as a service-level objective to validate for one workload and provider pair, not as a universal GPU-cloud feature.

What does “without downtime” mean for a GPU-cloud migration?

For this purpose, “without downtime” means that users continue receiving an acceptable service while ownership moves from the source deployment to the destination. It does not mean that a live GPU process is teleported between providers. Define the objective in measurable terms before you build anything:

  • Inference availability: the maximum period during which no healthy endpoint is serving requests.
  • Request behavior: permitted error rate, latency, first-token time, throughput, and treatment of in-flight requests.
  • Training recovery: the maximum amount of progress, measured in time or steps, that may be lost after a node or provider failure.
  • Data guarantees: which model artifacts, datasets, checkpoints, logs, and secrets must be readable at the destination.
  • Rollback: the time and conditions under which traffic or the job returns to the source.

A provider pair can satisfy these objectives for one model and fail them for another. Record the thresholds in the migration runbook and make an explicit pass/fail decision rather than describing the result as universally zero downtime.

Can a running GPU container be live-migrated to another provider?

Not with the ordinary container live-migration mechanisms documented for Kubernetes GPU workloads. Cast AI’s eligibility documentation says GPU workloads are excluded because the GPU device context, GPU memory, kernel state, and CUDA allocations cannot be moved by that mechanism; its alternatives are node drain and restart, or application-level checkpointing for long-running training jobs. See Cast AI’s workload-eligibility documentation.

That limitation concerns a particular container migration system, but it reflects the practical boundary you should design around: a destination normally starts a new process, loads the model or checkpoint, and becomes healthy before the source is retired.

What NVIDIA vGPU live migration actually covers

NVIDIA’s AI Enterprise documentation states: “Live migration enables the transfer of VMs configured with NVIDIA vGPUs from one physical host to another without downtime.” The statement applies to virtual machines moving between physical hosts in the documented vGPU setup, not to an arbitrary Kubernetes process moving between cloud providers. Read the scope in NVIDIA’s vGPU features documentation before treating it as evidence for cross-cloud migration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A managed service may offer a specialized VM or hardware migration feature, but you still need to verify its supported guest configuration, storage, network, licensing, and failure behavior. Do not infer cross-provider portability from a host-level feature.

Which migration pattern fits the workload?

Choose the pattern according to whether the workload serves requests or computes a long-running result. The two cases have different continuity mechanisms.

Workload Continuity method State that must move What can be lost Cutover signal
Inference API, batch inference service, or model endpoint Deploy a replacement at the destination, run readiness and representative-load tests, then shift traffic with the available routing controls. Model artifact and revision, tokenizer, serving configuration, caches, secrets, request/session state, and observability. Requests that are not drained or retried safely; warm-cache benefits during startup. Destination passes readiness, latency, throughput, error-rate, and recovery thresholds while source remains available for rollback.
Long-running training or fine-tuning Write consistent application checkpoints, provision compatible capacity, restore dependencies and data access, and resume from a verified checkpoint. Model weights, optimizer and scheduler state, counters, random-number state where supported, dataloader position, configuration, and code/image revision. Work performed after the last durable checkpoint; any non-checkpointed external state. Destination resumes at the expected step, produces valid metrics, and meets the agreed performance and recovery thresholds.

For either pattern, orchestration can make the deployment definition portable without making process state portable. NVIDIA Run:ai describes an open-source Kubernetes orchestration platform intended to provide a consistent way to run workloads across cloud and hybrid Kubernetes environments; that is a portability aid, not proof of stateful cross-provider migration. See Run:ai’s self-hosted documentation.

How do I inventory an AI workload before moving it?

Build a source-and-destination inventory that names every dependency. A generic Kubernetes manifest is not enough because GPU model, runtime, topology, storage semantics, and hidden application state can determine whether the replacement behaves correctly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Pin the software: record the container image digest, operating-system base, framework and serving or training code revisions, tokenizer, model revision, Python and system packages, CUDA toolkit, GPU driver, and any communication libraries.
  2. Describe hardware needs: record GPU model, count, memory requirement, MIG or partitioning assumptions, CPU architecture and instruction-set requirements, host-memory minimum, local scratch space, and expected multi-GPU interconnect.
  3. Map data and artifacts: list model files, datasets, checkpoints, feature stores, vector indexes, licenses, object-storage buckets, persistent volumes, mount paths, read/write modes, and expected throughput.
  4. Document distributed behavior: capture world size, ranks, rendezvous settings, collective-communication backend, topology assumptions, placement rules, and failure handling for multi-GPU or multi-node jobs.
  5. Record network and identity: list service ports, ingress or gateway requirements, egress destinations, private links, DNS names, TLS certificates, IAM roles, API keys, secret stores, and firewall rules.
  6. Define health checks: identify liveness, readiness, startup, model-loaded, cache-warm, and dependency checks. Note which checks are safe before production traffic and which require a real request.
  7. Set continuity limits: write the permitted inference interruption and training-progress loss, the rollback owner, and the evidence required to declare the destination accepted.

Tie each item to an actual offering at both providers. The available documentation does not supply a universal compatibility matrix, so the inventory is the compatibility matrix for your workload.

What should I compare between GPU cloud providers?

Compare the complete execution path, not only advertised GPU names. The following matrix turns the comparison into testable questions.

Dimension Questions to answer Evidence to collect
Accelerator capacity Is the required GPU model, memory size, partitioning mode, and count available in the target region? What quotas and reservation rules apply? Approved quota, allocation result, startup time, and behavior during capacity exhaustion.
CPU and host features Does the destination use the required architecture, instruction sets, NUMA layout, and host-memory capacity? Node description and a representative preprocessing or data-loader run.
Driver and CUDA stack Are driver, CUDA, cuDNN, NCCL or equivalent communication libraries, framework, and container versions compatible? Image startup logs, framework device query, kernel execution test, and distributed-communication test.
Kubernetes and serving Are the required API versions, device plugins, autoscaling, ingress, service mesh, rollout, and secret integrations available? Successful deployment, readiness transitions, scaling test, and rollback test.
Topology and network Can GPUs communicate over the required interconnect? Are latency, bandwidth, private networking, DNS, and egress paths sufficient? Topology description, collective benchmark relevant to your job, and dependency connectivity test.
Storage Can the target read the model and checkpoints with the needed consistency, permissions, throughput, and range-read behavior? Artifact checksum, load time, sustained read test, restart test, and permission audit.
Operations How are maintenance events, node replacement, health signals, logs, metrics, and lifecycle events exposed? Alert delivery, maintenance notification, and recovery exercise.
Location and economics Does the region satisfy data-locality requirements? What are compute, storage, transfer, and idle-capacity costs? Workload-specific estimate including model and checkpoint egress, not a generic hourly price.

NVIDIA’s inference reference architecture highlights Kubernetes APIs, quotas, GPU and network resources, topology, storage, health signals, and lifecycle events as handoff concerns. It also calls for measuring model loading, cache behavior, readiness, serving performance, and recovery. Use that architecture as a checklist, while treating all performance results as workload-specific.

How do I prepare a destination for an inference service?

Build the destination as a complete replacement and prove it privately before allowing production requests. A provider-neutral sequence is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Recreate identity and access: create least-privilege roles, service accounts, secret references, certificate paths, and access to model artifacts and downstream services. Keep source credentials available until rollback is no longer possible.
  2. Provision compatible capacity: obtain the required GPU count and memory, install or select compatible drivers and runtimes, and apply the same CPU, storage, topology, and scheduling constraints that affect performance.
  3. Deploy an immutable release: use the pinned image digest, model revision, serving configuration, tokenizer, environment variables, and resource limits. Give the replacement a distinct name so it cannot be confused with the source.
  4. Warm and verify the model: confirm artifact checksums, load weights, initialize the backend, populate required caches, and wait for a readiness condition that represents actual model availability rather than merely a running container.
  5. Exercise the endpoint privately: send representative prompts or payloads, including maximum context, streaming and non-streaming modes, malformed input, cancellation, and authentication. Compare output validity, first-token or first-response time, latency, throughput, and error behavior with the source.
  6. Run a controlled load test: test expected concurrency, burst behavior, queue limits, autoscaling, GPU memory pressure, and cache eviction. Record the model revision, backend, GPU type, software versions, and cache state alongside every result.
  7. Test failure and restart recovery: restart a pod or node where the platform permits it, observe readiness and cache rebuild, and verify that traffic is not routed to an unready replica.
  8. Declare acceptance: compare measurements with the prewritten thresholds. Do not send production traffic merely because the deployment reports “Ready.”

The routing operation depends on your application and provider pair. It may use a gateway, load balancer, service-discovery record, or another control plane; no single DNS, gateway, or load-balancer procedure is universal. Keep the source endpoint addressable until the observation period and rollback criteria have elapsed.

How should stateful inference sessions be handled?

Identify state that is not inside the model weights: conversation history, streaming connections, rate-limit counters, feature caches, and user affinity. Store required state in a shared, provider-reachable system or make the application able to recreate it. If a session is pinned to one replica or provider, drain or explicitly migrate that session rather than assuming a new replica can reconstruct it.

How do I move a long-running training job?

Training migration is a restart from a durable application checkpoint, not a transfer of live GPU memory. The checkpoint must be readable at the destination and compatible with the restored code and runtime.

  1. Choose a checkpoint interval: balance lost work against checkpoint time, storage cost, and training slowdown. The interval is framework- and workload-specific; measure it rather than adopting a universal value.
  2. Make checkpoints consistent: save model weights plus optimizer state, scheduler state, global step or epoch, gradient-scaler state when used, configuration, and any dataloader or sampler position your framework supports. Include a code and container-image identifier.
  3. Write durably and verify: upload to destination-readable object storage or another shared location, record a manifest and checksum, and test a restore in an isolated environment. A file that exists but cannot be fully read is not a recovery point.
  4. Prepare the target: allocate compatible GPUs, restore the image and dependencies, configure distributed ranks and networking, mount the data, and grant read/write permissions to checkpoints and logs.
  5. Resume in a rehearsal: start from a copied checkpoint, verify the reported step, loss and learning-rate values, data position, and sample outputs, then run enough steps to expose collective-communication or performance problems.
  6. Schedule the handoff: stop or pause the source at a known checkpoint boundary, confirm the final checkpoint checksum, and start the destination from that exact version. Avoid two writers updating the same checkpoint path.
  7. Compare progress: check that metrics evolve within expected variance and that throughput, GPU utilization, memory use, and data-loader behavior meet the acceptance thresholds.
  8. Retire only after proof: preserve the source job’s logs, image, credentials, and last checkpoint until the destination has completed the agreed observation period.

Checkpointing reduces recovery loss but cannot preserve uncheckpointed GPU process state. Formats, consistency guarantees, transfer time, and restart semantics differ among frameworks, so document and test them for the specific training code.

Test area Measurements or checks Why it matters
Artifact handling Discovery time, download time, checksum, decompression, and storage read throughput. A slower or inconsistent artifact path can make a nominally healthy service miss its availability objective.
Initialization Container start, weight loading, backend initialization, cache warm-up, and readiness transition. Users experience startup and cache behavior during failover or scaling, not only steady-state speed.
Request path First token or first response, percentile latency, throughput, concurrency, streaming behavior, timeout and retry behavior, and error rate. GPU model names do not predict application-level performance by themselves.
Training path Checkpoint restore time, resumed step, samples or tokens per second, memory headroom, collective communication, and metric continuity. A job can resume successfully yet progress too slowly or diverge from the expected run.
Recovery Pod and node restart, dependency outage handling, cache rebuild, requeue behavior, and alert delivery. Migration is also a recovery design; the replacement must survive the events that motivated the move.
Operational controls Quota behavior, autoscaling, maintenance signals, logs, metrics, traces, and operator access. Missing control-plane visibility can delay detection and rollback even when the model works.

Keep the test data and scripts with the runbook. A result without the model revision, backend, GPU type, driver and runtime versions, and cache state cannot support a meaningful comparison.

How should I cut over traffic and preserve rollback?

Decide the ownership transition before migration day and rehearse it. The exact commands differ by routing system, but the control sequence is consistent.

  1. Freeze the release definition: record the destination image, model revision, configuration, endpoint, health checks, and test results.
  2. Confirm source health: ensure the existing service is stable and that you have current dashboards, logs, credentials, and capacity for a rollback.
  3. Start with no production traffic: keep the destination isolated or use an internal route until readiness and representative-load checks pass.
  4. Choose a traffic method: use the routing control available to your application, such as weighted routing, a gateway rule, service discovery, or an equivalent mechanism. Document connection draining and retry behavior.
  5. Shift under observation: move traffic in controlled increments when the routing layer supports it, watching errors, latency, throughput, readiness, cache behavior, and downstream saturation.
  6. Apply the rollback trigger: if any acceptance threshold is breached, restore the previous route or job ownership, stop new work on the destination, and preserve logs for diagnosis.
  7. Complete the observation period: retain the source deployment and its access until the agreed period passes without an unresolved alert.
  8. Decommission deliberately: remove source capacity only after confirming that data, credentials, monitoring, and recovery artifacts needed for the new steady state are retained.

For training, the equivalent handoff is a verified checkpoint boundary: stop the source writer, confirm checkpoint integrity, start the destination, and compare resumed progress before deleting the source job or data.

What commonly fails during a cross-provider GPU migration?

Most incidents arise from an omitted dependency or an untested operational assumption rather than from the model code itself.

The target has the “same” GPU but different behavior

Two accelerators with similar names can differ in memory, partitioning, clocks, interconnect, or availability. Recheck memory headroom, topology, and representative throughput; adjust batch size or parallelism only after measuring the effect on quality and latency.

The container starts but the backend cannot use the GPU

Inspect driver, CUDA, framework, device-plugin, and communication-library versions together. Run a device query and a real model kernel before declaring readiness. Pin versions in the image and node configuration rather than relying on a provider’s latest default.

Model loading exceeds the availability budget

Large weights, slow object storage, decompression, and cold caches can make replacement startup longer than expected. Pre-stage artifacts where permitted, measure cold and warm paths separately, and keep enough healthy source capacity to cover the measured startup window.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Traffic reaches an unready replica

A process-level liveness check can pass while weights are still loading. Make readiness depend on model and dependency availability, verify that the routing layer honors it, and test restart behavior under load.

Sessions or caches disappear

Conversation state, feature caches, and compiled kernels may be local to the old deployment. Externalize essential state, use a deliberate session-drain policy, and include cold-cache behavior in acceptance tests.

Checkpoint restore succeeds but training diverges

Check that optimizer, scheduler, random-state, data-order, and configuration information was saved consistently. Confirm the exact code and image revision, dataset snapshot, precision mode, and resumed step before comparing metrics.

The destination cannot obtain capacity during an incident

Quota, regional scarcity, or maintenance can defeat an otherwise valid design. Test allocation under realistic quotas, keep an approved fallback region or provider when the objective requires it, and monitor provider health and lifecycle signals.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rollback is theoretically possible but operationally slow

A route record alone is not a rollback plan if credentials expired, source artifacts were deleted, or operators cannot reach the old control plane. Keep source access, data permissions, dashboards, and an executable rollback procedure until acceptance is complete.

How do orchestration platforms and managed services affect portability?

Orchestration can standardize deployment descriptions, quotas, scheduling, and observability across Kubernetes environments, but it does not erase provider differences in GPUs, storage, networking, or state. NVIDIA Run:ai’s documentation presents consistent workload operation across Kubernetes, including cloud and hybrid infrastructure; use that as a design objective and still validate each destination.

Google Cloud’s GKE AI/ML orchestration documentation covers accelerators, framework integration, multi-tier checkpointing, GPU training, and inference resources. Those capabilities establish what that managed Kubernetes environment offers; they do not establish equivalence with another provider.

Products that aggregate cloud and on-premises GPU capacity make a similar portability claim. exalsius documents a platform for combining such infrastructure at its documentation site; treat the claim as a capability to test against your workload. Flexium.AI documents GPU-level PyTorch training migration at its site; vendor statements about uninterrupted migration are not independent proof of a general cross-cloud guarantee.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

NVIDIA’s Run:ai legacy-workload migration guide illustrates a useful operational pattern: create a replacement under a different name, verify it, and then stop the legacy workload. The procedure in that guide applies to its product-upgrade scenario, not to provider migration, but the verify-before-retire sequence is broadly applicable.

What should be in the migration runbook?

A runbook makes the migration repeatable and gives operators a safe way to stop. Include these items:

  • Source and destination accounts, regions, clusters, GPU types, quotas, and escalation contacts.
  • Immutable image, model, tokenizer, dataset, checkpoint, framework, driver, CUDA, and backend versions.
  • Storage locations, checksums, retention rules, encryption, access policies, and transfer estimates.
  • Network routes, DNS or gateway controls, certificates, secrets, session-state handling, and connection-drain behavior.
  • Readiness, liveness, dependency, and model-loaded checks with expected transitions.
  • Inference and training acceptance thresholds, test payloads, benchmark scripts, and comparison fields.
  • Traffic or job ownership sequence, observation period, rollback trigger, rollback operator, and communication channel.
  • Evidence required to retire the source: clean alerts, verified metrics, retained logs, and a current destination checkpoint or artifact manifest.

Run a rehearsal with a non-production model or isolated route. A rehearsal should exercise allocation, artifact transfer, readiness, traffic control, failure injection where safe, rollback, and cleanup—not just deployment success.

Is a zero-downtime GPU migration achievable for my workload?

It is achievable as a service-level result for many inference workloads when a tested replacement, routing control, health monitoring, and rollback path exist. For training, you can avoid a full restart of the experiment by resuming from a checkpoint, but the interval since that checkpoint remains recoverable loss. Neither result proves that live CUDA state crossed providers.

Accept the migration only when the destination has passed workload-specific tests for startup, cache behavior, readiness, request or training performance, and recovery, and when operators can execute rollback with the source still intact. If any of those conditions is untested, describe the plan as a replacement-and-recovery migration rather than a guaranteed no-downtime transfer.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should I keep the old GPU deployment after cutover?

Keep it for the observation period defined by your service-level objective, long enough to cover normal traffic patterns and the failure modes you tested. The period should end only when dashboards are clean, rollback credentials still work, and the destination has met every acceptance threshold.

What happens to in-flight inference requests during a provider switch?

A routing layer may stop admitting new requests while allowing existing connections to drain, but the exact behavior is application-specific. Make handlers idempotent where possible, set bounded timeouts, and decide whether clients retry, receive an error, or resume a stream when a connection is closed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which training files are most often missing from a checkpoint?

Teams commonly save weights but omit optimizer and scheduler state, mixed-precision scaler state, the global step, data-sampler position, or the exact code and configuration revision. Missing any of these can change resumed updates or data order even when the checkpoint loads successfully.

Does using Kubernetes guarantee that two GPU clouds are interchangeable?

No. Kubernetes can standardize deployment APIs and scheduling concepts, while GPU availability, driver compatibility, interconnect, storage consistency, quotas, networking, and maintenance behavior remain provider-specific. Portability still requires a destination rehearsal and measured acceptance.
