Yes. You can combine a folder of PNG images into a single PDF entirely on your device. The shortest cross-platform command is img2pdf --output combined.pdf *.png; ImageMagick can do the same with magick *.png combined.pdf. On a Mac, Finder’s Quick Actions > Create PDF requires no installation. Rename files with zero-padded numbers such as 001.png, 002.png, and 003.png, or provide an explicit file list, so the PDF pages appear in the intended order. None of these workflows sends the images to a browser service.
Which offline method should you use?
Choose a focused converter when you mainly need reliable image-to-PDF output, a general image tool when you also need transformations, or a built-in Mac workflow when you want to avoid installing anything.
| Method | Runs on | Best for | Basic action | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| img2pdf | Linux, macOS and Windows through available packages or an executable | PNG-to-PDF conversion with a lossless-oriented workflow | img2pdf --output combined.pdf *.png |
Page-size and scaling choices depend on the command options you select. |
| ImageMagick | Linux, macOS and Windows | Conversion plus resizing, rotating, color conversion or other image processing | magick *.png combined.pdf |
It is a broad image-processing suite; security policy deserves attention for untrusted inputs. |
| Finder Quick Actions | macOS | A no-install graphical workflow | Select files, Control-click, then choose Quick Actions > Create PDF | The order follows the order in which you select the files. |
| Preview | macOS | Visual page review, rearranging and local printing | Open images, show thumbnails, then add or reorder pages | Exact scaling depends on Preview’s print or page settings and the available PDF printer. |
For a folder that already contains correctly named PNGs, start with img2pdf. Use ImageMagick if the images need edits before they become pages. On macOS, Finder is quickest for a one-off job, while Preview is better when you need to inspect and rearrange pages visually.

How do I convert a folder of PNGs with img2pdf?
img2pdf is an open-source command-line program designed to place images in a PDF without unnecessary image recompression. Install it from PyPI, a Linux distribution repository, or the Windows executable provided by the project, then run the command from the folder containing the PNGs.

1. Open a terminal in the image folder
Put every source image you want to convert in one folder. Open a terminal (or the equivalent command prompt) and change to that folder. The command must run in the directory whose files you intend to match; otherwise, the wildcard may match nothing or the wrong images.
2. Convert every PNG in that folder
img2pdf --output combined.pdf *.png
The shell expands *.png into the matching filenames before img2pdf receives them. The utility then writes combined.pdf locally. Keep the output name outside the input pattern: do not put a PDF in a pattern intended to match source images, and do not save the output over one of the PNGs.
3. Control the page sequence explicitly when needed
Wildcard expansion normally follows the shell’s filename ordering, but relying on an accidental naming scheme is risky. Pass files in the exact sequence you want:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteimg2pdf --output combined.pdf 001.png 002.png 003.png
For a larger set, rename the files with zero-padded numeric prefixes, for example 001.png through 120.png. Padding keeps lexical sorting aligned with numeric order; without it, a filename such as 10.png can sort before 2.png. If the images have meaningful names, an explicit list is the least ambiguous option.
4. Add document metadata if useful
img2pdf also accepts PDF metadata options. The documented pattern is:
img2pdf --title "My First PDF" --author "Jack Example" --output test.pdf *
Use a PNG-only pattern instead of * when the folder contains other file types:
img2pdf --title "Project scans" --author "A. Reader" --output scans.pdf *.png
Metadata does not alter the image pixels. It simply records descriptive fields in the resulting PDF when a reader displays document properties.
5. Check the result before deleting originals
Open the PDF in a local viewer and verify the page count, first and last pages, orientation and readability. Keep the PNGs until this check is complete; the conversion creates a new PDF and does not provide a reason to remove the source files.
How do I use ImageMagick to make one PDF from PNGs?
ImageMagick provides a cross-platform alternative when conversion is only one part of the job. Its command-line tools process image sequences, and the -adjoin behavior is intended to write a sequence to a multi-image destination when the destination format supports it.

Basic conversion
magick *.png combined.pdf
Run this in the source folder. As with img2pdf, the wildcard is expanded by the shell, so file naming and shell sorting determine page order. The PDF is created on the same device as the source images.
Use an explicit list if expansion or ordering is uncertain
magick 001.png 002.png 003.png combined.pdf
This form avoids dependence on wildcard expansion and makes the intended sequence visible in the command. It is also useful when only some PNGs in a folder belong in the document.

Choose ImageMagick for preprocessing
ImageMagick is broader than a dedicated image-to-PDF converter. It can resize, rotate or convert color before writing the PDF, so it suits scans that need normalization. Those extra operations can change pixels or dimensions; if preserving the original image data is the priority, use a lossless-oriented workflow such as img2pdf and perform only the minimum processing required.
Check the installation and destination
ImageMagick publishes Linux, macOS and Windows downloads, including portable or ready-to-run builds. If the magick command is not recognized, install a build appropriate for your operating system and open a new terminal so the command is on the system path. Write the output to a filename such as combined.pdf that is not included in the input list.
How can I create the PDF in macOS Finder without installing software?
Finder has a built-in Quick Action that creates a PDF from selected image files. It is the simplest local route for a one-time conversion.
- In Finder, open the folder containing the PNGs.
- Select the files you want to include, arranging the selection in the order you want represented in the PDF.
- Control-click the selection.
- Choose Quick Actions > Create PDF.
- Locate the new PDF in the folder and open it to check the pages.
Apple’s Mac User Guide states that the files appear in the PDF in the same order that you select them. For repeatable results, rename files with numeric prefixes before selecting them; this makes the intended sequence clear even when the Finder view is sorted differently. Finder’s action creates the document locally and does not require a web upload.
When is macOS Preview better than Finder?
Preview is useful when you need to see page thumbnails, insert additional images, remove a page or drag pages into a new order before saving.
- Open the images in Preview. If they open in separate windows, use the window that contains the document you want to assemble.
- Choose View > Thumbnails to display the page sidebar.
- Drag thumbnails to reorder them, or add more image files to the thumbnail area.
- Review orientation and page sequence visually.
- Save or export the assembled document as a PDF. Preview also supports printing images with scaling controls; if a PDF printer is available, printing to that destination is another local route.
Preview is preferable to Finder when visual corrections matter more than speed. It also gives you a chance to catch a sideways scan or a missing page before the final file is distributed.
How do I keep the PDF pages in the right order?
Page order is determined before the PDF is written. Use a deterministic filename scheme or an explicit file list rather than assuming that the order displayed by a file manager will always be the order passed to a command.

Use zero-padded names
Name files consistently, such as 001.png, 002.png, and 003.png. Use enough digits for the whole set: a 120-page folder should use three digits, while a 1,000-page folder needs four. Keep the prefix unique so duplicate names cannot overwrite one another.
Pass files explicitly
For a short set, list every file in sequence:
img2pdf --output report.pdf cover.png 001.png 002.png appendix.png
The same approach works with ImageMagick. This is the safest method when the desired order differs from alphabetical order, such as placing a cover before numbered pages or an appendix after them.
Test a small subset first
Convert three or four representative pages and inspect the result. Confirm that the first page, a middle page and the final page are where expected before processing a very large folder. This catches naming and orientation mistakes without waiting for the full conversion.
Remember that Finder follows selection order
Finder’s Quick Action uses the order in which you select the files, according to Apple’s documentation. If the order is critical, select deliberately or rename the files first so there is no ambiguity.
Will converting PNGs to PDF reduce image quality?
The answer depends on the tool and the transformations applied. img2pdf is designed for a lossless-oriented image-to-PDF workflow, while ImageMagick may alter images if you resize, rotate, change color or apply other processing before writing the PDF.

- Standardize scans: Use ImageMagick when dimensions, orientation or color need correction, accepting that those operations can change the image data.
- Keep expectations realistic: A PDF page can preserve the image content while still displaying at a different physical size. Page-size and scaling controls vary by utility and by the options you choose.
- Inspect fine detail: Zoom into text, line art and small labels in the output PDF before replacing the originals.
Do not assume that a larger PDF is automatically higher quality. The useful check is whether the rendered pages retain the detail and dimensions your reader needs.
How should I handle page size, orientation and scaling?
Image-to-PDF tools can map image dimensions to PDF pages in different ways. A workflow focused on preserving image content may use the image dimensions directly, while a print-oriented workflow may fit images to a chosen paper size. The available controls vary, so decide whether your priority is pixel fidelity, consistent paper dimensions or both.
If every image represents a scanned page
Keep the scan orientation consistent before conversion. A single sideways PNG will become a sideways PDF page unless you rotate it first. ImageMagick is convenient for batch rotation or resizing; Preview lets you correct individual pages visually on a Mac.
If the PDF will be printed
Check the physical page dimensions and scaling in the resulting viewer or print dialog. A PDF that looks correct on screen can still print with margins or a fit-to-page adjustment. Preview’s printing workflow exposes scaling controls, and ImageMagick can preprocess dimensions, but no universal page-size setting applies to every folder.

If the PDF is for screen reading
Prioritize legibility at the zoom level your audience will use. Avoid resizing already-small text images downward. Make a test PDF and inspect the smallest text before converting the complete set.
What can go wrong with a large folder, and how do I fix it?
Most failures come from filename expansion, an incorrect working directory, an output name that collides with an input, or a single problematic image. Work through these checks in order.
The command says no files matched
- Confirm that the terminal is in the folder containing the PNGs.
- Check the extension. A pattern such as
*.pngmay not match files ending in uppercase.PNGon systems with case-sensitive filenames. - Use an explicit filename list to prove that the files can be read.
The pages are out of sequence
Rename the files with zero-padded prefixes or provide an explicit ordered list. Do not rely on how the files happen to be displayed in a graphical folder view.
The output is incomplete or the command stops
Test a small subset to identify whether one image is malformed or unusually large. Then add files in batches until the failing input is isolated. Open the source image locally; if it cannot be read by an image viewer, replace or repair it before rerunning the conversion.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The output overwrites an earlier PDF
Choose a new output filename, such as combined-v2.pdf, or move the old PDF elsewhere first. Keep the output outside the source wildcard and verify the destination path before pressing Enter.
The process is slow or memory-intensive
Large, high-resolution folders can take time and consume substantial storage while the PDF is being assembled. Convert a small sample first, ensure enough free disk space for the PDF, and process the folder in smaller batches if the complete run is impractical. Merge the batch PDFs afterward only if your chosen local tool supports that workflow.
How do I protect private PNGs during conversion?
Use a local utility or desktop workflow, keep the source folder and output path on a device you control, and avoid browser-based converters when the requirement is that files never leave the device. Check that synchronization software or a shared network folder is not silently copying the images elsewhere if your privacy policy prohibits that.
ImageMagick recommends reviewing the security policy for the environment, especially when inputs are untrusted. Treat downloaded or externally supplied images cautiously: inspect them before processing, keep ImageMagick’s security policy appropriate for your system, and do not grant a converter more file-system access than necessary. A local conversion is private in transit, but it is not a substitute for ordinary endpoint security.
Which workflow is the best fit for common situations?
- Fast, repeatable PNG-only conversion: Use
img2pdf --output combined.pdf *.pngwith zero-padded filenames. - Images need rotation, resizing or color work: Use ImageMagick, then inspect the resulting PDF for quality and page dimensions.
- You are on a Mac and want no installation: Use Finder’s Quick Actions > Create PDF.
- You need to rearrange or remove individual pages: Assemble and review the document in Preview.
- The sequence is legally or operationally important: Use an explicit file list, verify the first, middle and last pages, and retain the original PNG folder until approval.
All four approaches create the PDF locally. The decisive choices are ordering, whether image transformations are required, and whether you need visual page management before delivery.

What should I do after the PDF is created?
Open the file in a local PDF viewer and perform a short acceptance check:
- Confirm the filename and destination are correct.
- Check the total page count against the number of PNGs selected.
- Inspect the first, a middle and the final page for order, orientation and missing content.
- Zoom into the smallest text or most detailed artwork.
- Check file size and available storage before copying or archiving the PDF.
- Keep the original PNGs until the recipient confirms that the PDF is usable.
This check is especially important after a wildcard conversion, because a technically successful command can still produce the wrong sequence or omit files that did not match the pattern.
Frequently asked questions
Can I convert PNGs to a PDF with no internet connection?
Yes. After the converter or desktop feature is installed, the conversion itself can run offline because the images are read from local storage and the PDF is written locally. An initial download of a utility is only needed during installation.
Can different PNG dimensions be combined in one PDF?
They can be passed to the same conversion command, but the resulting pages may have different physical sizes or visual scaling. Create a small test first, then choose a preprocessing or page-sizing approach if consistent paper dimensions are required.
How do I include only selected images from a folder?
Use an explicit filename list instead of *.png. Listing the files also lets you place a cover, divider or appendix exactly where it belongs.
Is a command-line PDF automatically searchable?
No. Converting PNGs places raster images into PDF pages; it does not create selectable text. If you need search or copy functions, you will need a separate local optical-character-recognition step after conversion.
Can I delete the PNGs immediately after conversion?
Wait until you have opened the PDF, verified its pages and confirmed that the recipient accepts it. Keeping the source folder temporarily gives you a way to correct ordering or a damaged input without recreating the images.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I convert PNGs to a PDF with no internet connection?
Yes. Once the utility is installed, conversion reads local files and writes the PDF locally; an internet connection is only needed to obtain the installer or package.
Can different PNG dimensions be combined in one PDF?
Yes, but pages may have different physical sizes or scaling. Test a few files and preprocess them if a uniform paper size is required.
How do I include only selected images from a folder?
Pass an explicit ordered filename list instead of using *.png. This excludes unrelated files and lets you place covers or appendices precisely.
Is a PNG-to-PDF conversion searchable?
No. The PDF contains raster images, not selectable text. Add a separate local OCR step if text search is required.
