What to measure before choosing a model
Use a measuring tape and record the available height, width, and depth of the installation space. Measure width and height in more than one place if the opening varies, and use the narrowest usable measurement. Counters, trim, baseboards, cabinets, and uneven floors can reduce the space available. GE Appliances recommends measuring twice and checking the narrow point in its measuring guidance.
Next, look up the exact model’s product dimensions and installation instructions. Compare the appliance’s height, width, and depth with the opening, but do not stop at the outer dimensions: the instructions may specify ventilation or installation clearances, a cutout size, utility locations, or room for doors and drawers to open. GE directs buyers to the specific product specifications and installation instructions for these details.
Check the room for operation and installation
Imagine the appliance in its final position. Check whether hinges, handles, doors, or drawers will hit a nearby wall, island, counter, or cabinet. Confirm that the doors can open far enough for normal use and, where relevant, for removing shelves or drawers. Refrigerator door-opening space varies by model and refrigerator type; LG advises checking the selected model’s requirements rather than relying on a general measurement.

Allow for the connections and working space required by the appliance. The needs vary by model and installation, so there is no single clearance figure that applies to every refrigerator, washer, and range.
- Refrigerator: Check the model’s side, rear, and top clearances, along with door swing. If it has an icemaker or water dispenser, verify the water-supply and shutoff requirements in the installation instructions.
- Washer: Check space for water supplies, the drain, and hoses behind the machine. For a front-loader, make sure the door can open into the available space; also check the water-supply position against the washer’s instructions.
- Range: Check the opening against the range dimensions and adjacent counters or cabinets. Use the model’s instructions to confirm gas or electrical requirements, clearances, and anti-tip installation requirements. Local code may also apply.
Manufacturer and retailer installation or delivery guidance can describe the conditions for that company’s own service. For example, Whirlpool’s and Samsung’s connection and preparation instructions are service-specific; do not treat them as universal requirements for every installer or model. Follow the selected appliance’s instructions and confirm local installation requirements.

Measure the delivery route separately
An appliance that fits the opening may still be too large to bring into the home. Measure the tightest point along the entire route: exterior and interior doorways, halls, stairs, and turns. Include obstacles such as protruding handles, latches, shelves, and wall fixtures. Compare these measurements with the dimensions that apply during delivery. Packaging can make an appliance larger than its bare product dimensions; LG notes that refrigerator packaging can add several centimeters.
Ask the retailer or delivery provider which dimensions they use for the route check and whether the appliance will arrive packaged or uncrated. If a door or handle might need to be removed, confirm whether that is possible for the specific model and delivery service rather than assuming it is included.

Use a model-by-model fit checklist
Before purchase, put the measurements for your space beside the details for each candidate model. This makes it easier to spot a fit problem that a single width or depth comparison would miss.
