To measure sales from AI shopping referrals, identify sessions whose recorded source points to an AI service, then analyze those sessions alongside correctly implemented ecommerce events and revenue in Google Analytics 4 (GA4). This gives you a view of identifiable AI-attributed traffic—not every purchase AI may have influenced. Missing referral information can be processed as direct traffic, so keep observed referrals separate from unknown or self-reported influence.
What an AI referral report can—and cannot—tell you
A GA4 report filtered to known AI referrers answers a specific question: how many visits with an observable AI source led to the events and revenue your property recorded? It does not establish that AI caused a purchase, and it cannot count AI-influenced journeys whose source was not recorded.
Google says sessions without referral-source information are processed as direct traffic. App handoffs, copied links, privacy choices, redirects, and other behaviors may affect the source information that reaches a site; the amount of traffic a particular store loses this way is not established by the documentation. Treat missing-source journeys as unknown or direct, not as AI traffic by assumption. A post-purchase “How did you hear about us?” question can add self-reported discovery data, but response bias means it should remain a separate measure.
Set up ecommerce events before measuring outcomes
First confirm that GA4 receives the ecommerce events that describe your actual customer journey. Common examples include view_item, add_to_cart, begin_checkout, purchase, and refund; use the events relevant to your store rather than treating every interaction as a conversion. Google’s GA4 ecommerce guide describes these events and their implementation.

For a purchase event, send the transaction value and event-level currency when reporting revenue, along with available item information. Validate that events arrive using test or debug reporting before using them in outcome reports. Google’s implementation guidance calls for a Google tag, access to the site’s source code, and access to Analytics.
Choose a meaningful business outcome—such as a completed purchase or lead submission—and confirm its firing condition. Do not count page views as sales. Compare purchase counts and revenue with the store’s order records for the same period before presenting GA4 figures as sales totals; investigate discrepancies and apply the store’s definitions for discounts, tax, shipping, cancellations, and refunds.

Find sessions with an observable AI source
In a GA4 traffic-acquisition view or equivalent report, filter by session source and session medium for AI service values actually present in your property’s data. Maintain a documented list of included source values and review it as observed values change; there is no universal fixed list established here that will identify every AI platform for every property.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor each included source, report sessions, engaged sessions if useful, relevant funnel events, completed purchases, purchase revenue, and a clearly defined conversion rate. State the denominator for each rate—for example, purchases divided by sessions—so readers can interpret it consistently. A source table should name the exact values included for each platform; provider names alone are not enough if their referrer data is captured differently.

Use UTMs only on links you control
For retailer-controlled campaign links, apply a consistent convention using parameters such as utm_source, utm_medium, and utm_campaign, plus other fields your campaign scheme requires. Google maps manual UTM values to traffic-source dimensions; missing parameters can result in (not set). Its manual tagging and auto-tagging guidance also explains that present UTM parameters can supply cross-channel source values in some cases when click IDs cannot be used as intended.
Test a tagged visit end to end and inspect the resulting session dimensions. Do not assume that adding UTMs to your canonical product URL will tag citations sent by AI systems: those outgoing links are generally outside the merchant’s control. UTMs are useful for links you publish or otherwise manage, not a way to retrofit tracking onto every third-party citation.

Choose the acquisition scope that matches your question
GA4 traffic-source dimensions have different scopes, so a source label must be interpreted in context. Google’s documentation on traffic-source scopes distinguishes first-user, session, and event acquisition:
- First-user source describes the source associated with a user’s first session. Use it to study initial acquisition, not the source of every later visit.
- Session source describes the source for a particular new session. Use it when asking whether an observed AI referral session produced a purchase during that session.
- Event-scoped source assigns source credit to key events under the property’s selected attribution model. Use it when reporting modeled event credit, and name the model.
Google states that user- and session-scoped traffic dimensions use paid-and-organic last click, while event-scoped dimensions follow the property’s selected model (data-driven by default, according to its documentation). These views answer different questions; do not combine them into a single claim about AI performance. If an AI encounter preceded a later visit through another channel, a session report may show that later source rather than the earlier influence.
Best Value
Build a comparable recurring report
Compare AI referrals with organic search, paid traffic, and other referrals on the same date range and with the same event definitions and attribution scope. A useful report includes:
- Volume: sessions grouped by session-scoped source.
- Funnel progress: relevant add-to-cart and checkout events, with consistent rate denominators.
- Completed outcomes: validated purchases or another explicitly defined key event.
- Revenue: recorded purchase revenue and currency, with average purchase revenue or refund handling if relevant to your reporting rules.
- Attribution basis: first-user, session, or event scope, and the model where applicable.
- Coverage: the precise AI source values included, plus a separate treatment for unknown, direct, and self-reported influence.
Include the reporting period, currency, source classification rule, and conversion-rate formula. Do not quote a general AI conversion benchmark unless its publisher, date, population, and method are independently established; the official documentation cited here does not provide a universal benchmark.
Validate GA4 counts against store orders
In the GA4 Data API, ecommercePurchases is the count of completed purchase events, while checkouts counts occurrences of begin_checkout, according to Google’s API dimensions and metrics reference. Those definitions describe Analytics events, not a guarantee that the figures equal backend order counts. Reconcile them with the merchant’s order system over matching dates and revenue rules before treating GA4 as the store’s record of sales.
