There is no single, universally correct AI-exposure percentage. A defensible measurement requires looking through every fund to the underlying issuers, tagging each issuer by disclosed or estimated AI revenue and by its position in the AI value chain, then weighting those exposures by your consolidated holdings. Report at least three views—a narrow disclosed-revenue total, a broader value-chain total and a risk view that includes disruption or automation—and attach the holdings date, definitions and uncertainty to every result.
What does AI exposure mean in an investment portfolio?
AI exposure is the share of a portfolio whose companies may benefit from, enable or be materially affected by artificial-intelligence investment. That share depends on your definition. A revenue-only measure counts business segments with reported or modeled AI sales. A value-chain measure also includes physical infrastructure, digital infrastructure and applications. A risk measure adds companies whose operations could be disrupted or automated by AI, even if they do not sell AI products.
These are different questions, so they should not be collapsed into one artificially precise figure. A semiconductor manufacturer, data-center operator, cloud provider, software vendor and bank using AI internally can all be relevant, but their evidence, economics and risks differ. Provider universes, dates and classifications also change, which is why an as-of date and methodology belong beside every headline number.
How do I prepare the portfolio data?
Start with a complete security-level inventory rather than a list of account balances. Capture the following fields for every account, ETF and mutual fund:

- Issuer name and security identifier (such as ticker and ISIN, where available).
- Quantity, market value and portfolio weight as of one specified date.
- Account, fund name, share class and currency.
- Whether the position is a common stock, depositary receipt, bond, derivative, cash vehicle or pooled fund.
- The holdings-file date and the provider or filing from which the data came.
Calculate each position’s weight as market value divided by total portfolio market value. Keep the original quantity and value so that a later price move can be distinguished from a trading change. If you own the same issuer in several accounts, do not analyze each line independently; retain the account detail but create a consolidated issuer record.
How do I look through ETFs and mutual funds?
Download the most recent holdings file for each pooled vehicle and expand it into underlying issuers. Match subsidiaries, dual listings and share classes to one economic issuer, then add that issuer’s weight across your direct holdings and all funds. Preserve a separate fund-level line for positions that cannot be looked through.
| Situation | Recommended treatment | What to disclose |
|---|---|---|
| Current, security-level holdings are available | Use the underlying issuer weights and consolidate duplicates. | Fund holdings date, file provider and any rounding. |
| Holdings are delayed or partial | Use the latest file, flag the lag and avoid false precision. | Publication date, effective date and estimated portion. |
| No usable look-through data | Keep fund-level exposure separate and label it unresolved. | Fund weight, share class and why issuer attribution is unavailable. |
Look-through totals can exceed 100 percent if you accidentally add a fund’s market value to its constituents. Use either the fund position or its underlying positions for a given slice, not both. A practical audit is to reconcile all expanded fund weights back to the original fund weight before calculating AI exposure.

Which dimensions should I record for each issuer?
Use four columns so that commercial opportunity and investment risk are not mixed together.
AI-linked revenue
Record a reported AI segment or revenue line when one exists. If no line is disclosed, record a modeled estimate or range and identify the assumptions. A named business segment with a documented AI link is stronger evidence than a company describing itself as “AI-powered.”
AI value-chain layer
Tag the issuer as physical infrastructure, digital infrastructure or applications. Physical infrastructure can include chips, manufacturing equipment, power and cooling. Digital infrastructure can include cloud capacity, networking, data platforms and model tooling. Applications include software and services that embed AI in an end product. An issuer may receive more than one tag; keep the tags separate from the revenue percentage.
AI activity signals
Track disclosed investment, partnerships, product launches, capacity additions and acquisitions. These signals show strategic attention but do not prove that AI is a material source of current revenue. Date each signal and distinguish a completed launch from an announced plan.

Disruption or automation potential
Note whether AI could materially change the issuer’s costs, labor demand, products or competitive position. A company can have little AI revenue and high disruption potential, or substantial AI revenue and significant competitive risk. Keep this risk flag separate from the opportunity total.
MSCI’s AI Exposure Intelligence organizes similar concepts into AI Revenue Exposure, AI Activity Monitor and AI Disruption Potential, using a rules-based classification across competitive impact, activity, revenue and risk. Its AI Value Chain Indexes divide opportunity into physical infrastructure, digital infrastructure and applications and use both realized business-segment revenue and attention to emerging activity.
How do I grade the evidence behind an AI classification?
Use an explicit evidence grade so estimates cannot quietly look like accounting facts:
- Grade A — disclosed: a filing, earnings release or segment note reports an AI product line, customer category or revenue amount.
- Grade B — documented segment link: a named segment has a clearly described AI role, but the company does not disclose a separate AI amount.
- Grade C — modeled estimate: a provider allocates part of a segment using published assumptions or proxies.
- Grade D — qualitative signal: marketing language, a partnership, a product announcement or a ticker theme without measurable revenue evidence.
For each grade, store the source, publication date and geography. If a provider supplies a range, retain the range and calculate a low and high case instead of selecting an unqualified midpoint. A ticker containing an AI-related term is not evidence by itself.
How do I calculate weighted AI exposure?
For each issuer, multiply its consolidated portfolio weight by the selected AI-exposure percentage, then sum the contributions:
Weighted AI exposure (percentage points) = issuer portfolio weight × AI-linked revenue share.
For example, a 4% consolidated holding with 60% AI-linked revenue contributes 2.4 percentage points (4% × 0.60) to a revenue-only total. A 1.5% holding with a 20% modeled share contributes 0.3 points. Keep the percentage-point contribution, evidence grade and source in the worksheet so the total can be reproduced.

| Issuer | Consolidated portfolio weight | AI share used | Contribution | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Example A | 4.0% | 60% | 2.4 points | Disclosed segment |
| Example B | 1.5% | 20% | 0.3 points | Modeled estimate |
| Example C | 3.0% | Not established | Not included in revenue total | Qualitative signal only |
Do not assign zero to an issuer with missing data unless zero is actually supported; use “not established” and show how much of the portfolio remains unresolved. If you use a provider’s thematic exposure definition, note that MSCI Strategy Explorer defines thematic exposure as the percentage of company revenue from business segments matched to the strategy.

Present three buckets before showing any combined view:
- Direct AI producers: issuers whose disclosed or modeled revenue comes from AI models, software or services.
- Enablers: chip, equipment, cloud, networking, data-center, power, cooling and other infrastructure suppliers that support AI workloads.
- Adopters: companies using AI in their own products or operations without a separately measurable AI business.
Direct and enabling buckets can be calculated with revenue weights when evidence exists. Adopter exposure is usually better shown as a qualitative or risk flag unless a company reports an AI-related segment. Adding all three buckets into one number can double count the same economic activity, so publish the buckets separately and explain any overlap.
How do I test concentration that ordinary fund labels hide?
List the largest issuer contributions, repeated issuers across funds and shared dependencies. A portfolio can contain many tickers yet be driven by the same AI-spending cycle if several funds own the same chip, cloud or networking companies.
- Sort issuers by weighted AI contribution, not by position count.
- Show each issuer’s number of accounts and funds.
- Aggregate exposure by value-chain layer and by dependency such as chips, cloud, networking, data centers, power and cooling.
- Calculate the share attributable to the top five and top ten issuers.
- Run a duplicate check after every fund holdings update.
ESMA’s 2025 analysis illustrates why this matters. It started with 198 constituents across seven AI indices, retained the 83 companies appearing in at least two indices and examined 10,370 EU equity funds using holdings from January 2021 through June 2024. More than 50% of the market value held by those funds was concentrated in the largest companies, including six of the Magnificent Seven. That result is about the analyzed EU fund market, not a universal concentration level for every portfolio.

External frameworks are useful when their definitions and coverage match your question. They are not interchangeable scores.
| Method | Coverage and construction | Strength | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| MSCI AI Exposure Intelligence | Rules-based assessment of competitive impact, AI activity, revenue and disruption; named datasets include AI Revenue Exposure, AI Activity Monitor and AI Disruption Potential. | Separates opportunity, activity and risk within one framework. | Provider classifications and constituent coverage may differ from your holdings and change over time. |
| MSCI AI Value Chain Indexes | Physical infrastructure, digital infrastructure and applications; combines realized segment revenue with attention to emerging AI activity. | Highlights enabling layers that a pure software screen misses. | Activity attention is not the same as realized revenue. |
| S&P Global Visible Alpha AI Monitor | 69 publicly traded companies; aggregates selected AI-exposed revenue lines and weights companies by AI-exposed revenue relative to total revenue. | Provides a transparent revenue-oriented proxy and refreshes classifications as disclosures and market conditions change. | S&P says the lines are proxies, not exact AI-revenue quantifications, because disclosures are limited and AI and conventional services are intertwined. |
| Morningstar combined fund AI Exposure score | Combines analyst assessments of future AI revenue with how frequently AI-focused managers hold each stock. | Useful for comparing funds within that provider’s framework. | It is a provider score, not a standardized accounting measure; the manager-holdings component can make it differ from current portfolio revenue. |
| ESMA cross-index approach | Retains companies appearing in at least two of seven AI indices, then measures their presence in EU funds. | Shows overlap and market-wide concentration. | It identifies a cross-index universe rather than calculating your portfolio’s company revenue exposure. |
When comparing tools, score each on transparency, revenue specificity, coverage of direct vendors and enablers, look-through and overlap handling, update frequency, geography, cost and access. A narrow disclosed-revenue measure is easier to audit; a broad value-chain or disruption measure may capture more shared risk but requires more judgment.

How do I build narrow, broad and risk scenarios?
Use at least three scenarios and label the contents of each:
Narrow disclosed-revenue case
Include only Grade A revenue amounts or clearly reported AI segments. Exclude unresolved issuers rather than treating them as zero, and show the percentage of portfolio value not covered.
Broader value-chain case
Add documented enabling segments and modeled estimates, including physical and digital infrastructure. Keep modeled shares in a separate column and provide low and high totals where assumptions are ranges.
Risk case
Add disruption or automation flags for adopters and vulnerable industries. This is a risk map, not an AI-revenue percentage; report the flagged portfolio weight separately from opportunity exposure.
Never average these scenarios into a single “true” number. A change between scenarios reflects a definition change, not necessarily a portfolio trade.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How often should I refresh the measurement?
Preserve the holdings date, prices, fund share class, provider version and classification date in every saved result. Refresh after a material portfolio change and at a regular review interval appropriate to your trading frequency. Re-run when an ETF changes index methodology, when a company reports a new segment, or when a provider revises an estimate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

What mistakes make AI exposure estimates unreliable?
- Counting fund and constituent values together: reconcile look-through weights to the original fund position.
- Using a ticker or “AI” label as proof: require a filing, documented segment link or explicitly modeled proxy.
- Hiding missing data: show unresolved portfolio weight and explain why it is unresolved.
- Mixing revenue and risk: keep disruption potential outside the revenue total.
- Ignoring geography and date: state whether figures refer to a company, fund, index or EU market and identify the period.
- Rounding too early: calculate with full precision and round only displayed totals.
- Assuming many tickers means diversification: inspect repeated issuers and shared cloud, chip, networking, power and cooling dependencies.
What should the final report contain?
A useful report has an executive table and an audit trail. Include the as-of date, portfolio value, definition of each scenario, direct/enabling/adopter buckets, top issuer contributions, fund overlap, unresolved weight, evidence grades and source dates. Attach the issuer worksheet so another person can reproduce every multiplication and see which assumptions would change the result.
State the conclusion in percentage points, not just a score—for example, “the disclosed-revenue case is X points, the modeled value-chain case is Y–Z points, and disruption-flagged holdings represent W%.” Replace X, Y, Z and W with calculated values from your own dated holdings file; they are not universal benchmarks.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I measure AI exposure without paying for a data provider?
Yes. You can combine fund holdings files, company filings and earnings materials in a spreadsheet, then document your own evidence grades and assumptions. The trade-off is more manual issuer matching and less consistent coverage than a maintained commercial dataset.
Should an AI-themed ETF automatically count as 100% AI exposure?
No. An ETF label describes an investment objective, not the percentage of each holding’s revenue tied to AI. Look through the current holdings and report the fund’s unresolved portion when the methodology or holdings file cannot support issuer-level attribution.
How can I tell whether two funds create the same AI bet?
Compare their expanded issuer lists and aggregate weights by issuer and value-chain dependency. Two funds with different names can still have a high overlap in the same cloud, chip, networking or data-center companies.
What does a modeled AI-revenue estimate mean?
It is an allocation made from disclosed segments, proxies or provider assumptions when a company does not report a separate AI line. Treat it as an estimate with a source date and, where possible, a range rather than as audited revenue.
Can AI exposure be negative?
A revenue-exposure percentage is non-negative, but AI can create downside through automation, pricing pressure, capital spending needs or competitive displacement. Capture those effects in a separate disruption or automation-risk measure instead of subtracting them from opportunity revenue.
