To make a 3D-printed accessory fit a guitar controller, identify the exact controller model and revision, measure it from a consistent reference point, and record every surface, opening, control, and moving part the accessory touches or must clear. Build the CAD model from those measurements, then test the tightest fit with a small print before making the full part. Do not rely on dimensions from a different controller: even guitar-shaped devices can have very different sizes and interfaces.

Why do I need to measure the exact guitar controller?

The model and revision determine whether an accessory fits. A controller’s overall length and width are only a starting point: the fit also depends on shell thickness, recessed and raised features, mounting holes, control travel, connectors, battery access, and strap hardware. A part that matches the outside outline can still block a button, foul a moving control, or prevent a battery cover from opening.

Published dimensions illustrate why one model’s measurements cannot stand in for another’s. Roland lists its GK-3 controller as 87.0 mm wide × 73.6 mm deep × 22.7 mm high in its GK-3 dimensions page. By contrast, an NBCP manual gives 16.93 × 12.99 × 2.56 inches and 3.03 pounds for a wireless PC/PS3 guitar controller (manual). These are model-specific examples, not a set of interchangeable guitar-controller dimensions.

Even a button that looks like a familiar size should be measured. Adafruit’s enclosure tutorial advises: “If your buttons are different than the listed Adafruit buttons, you will need to measure the size of your buttons. Use a caliper and measure the diameter.” The same principle applies to other critical interfaces: measure the controller you intend to fit, rather than estimating from appearance or copying another design’s dimensions.

What should I record before taking measurements?

Start by identifying the specific unit and documenting its condition. A short record prevents dimensions from being separated from the model, revision, or configuration they describe.

  • Identity: manufacturer, model, revision if shown, and connection type.
  • Configuration: whether the neck or headstock is attached, and which removable parts are in place.
  • Reference photos: photograph the identification label and the top, side, and underside. Keep the photos with the measurement sheet and CAD file.
  • Measurement units: use millimetres throughout the worksheet and CAD model to avoid mixing units.
  • Measurement reference: choose a flat face that can be identified again, and write down which face it is.

Do not assume that a familiar product name guarantees identical dimensions. Record the identifying information for the actual controller on your bench; if you later make another version, keep its measurements separately rather than silently overwriting the first set.

How do I establish a measurement datum?

A datum is the fixed reference from which you locate other features. Choose one flat, stable face, then define three directions: X left to right, Y front to back, and Z height. Use the same origin and axes for every coordinate in the worksheet and CAD file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, you might choose a corner of a flat body surface as the origin and measure hole centers from that point. The exact origin is less important than making it unambiguous and repeatable. Note the chosen face, origin, and axis directions in both places. Without that record, a measurement such as “hole center: 24 mm” is incomplete because it does not say where the distance starts or which direction it follows.

Keep the controller in a stable orientation while measuring. If a measurement has to be taken from a different side, relate it to the same datum system rather than inventing a new origin midway through the worksheet.

Which dimensions and interfaces must I measure?

Measure the overall envelope, then work through every controller feature that the accessory will touch, pass over, fasten to, or leave accessible. A caliper is useful for small critical features; record the location and purpose of each measurement as well as its value.

Overall envelope and contact surfaces

  • Record the controller’s overall length, width, and maximum height.
  • If the neck or headstock detaches, measure it separately and note whether it was attached for the overall measurement.
  • At each accessory contact surface, record its position and the minimum and maximum shell thickness. A surface can vary, so do not assume one thickness represents the entire contact area.
  • Measure the faces on which the accessory will sit or register. Note any slope, lip, recess, or other geometry that changes how it seats.

Controls and openings

  • Measure buttons, frets, the strum bar, and the whammy bar wherever the accessory passes near or around them.
  • For circular features, record the diameter and center-to-center spacing. Include the center locations in your datum coordinates when the accessory must align with them.
  • Record recess, boss, and lip depths. Note whether the caliper jaw can reach the true bottom of a recess; if it cannot, do not record a shallow reading as the feature’s full depth.
  • Measure screw-hole diameter, counterbore or countersink diameter, and hole depth. Record each hole’s center coordinates from the selected datum.
  • Record the size and location of openings needed for connectors, cables, the power switch, battery cover, and strap hardware.
  • For every moving control that needs to remain usable, determine its travel and the space it occupies through that movement—not just its resting position.

Repeat critical readings

Take at least two readings for each feature that controls the fit. If they disagree, re-zero the caliper and measure again. For an opening that must pass over the controller, retain the larger measured diameter in the worksheet rather than relying on the smaller reading. Record uncertain measurements explicitly, including any limitation such as a jaw that could not reach the bottom of a recess.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These readings are the geometry the CAD model needs. Keep measurements tied to named features—for example, “battery-cover opening width” or “left mounting-hole center from datum”—so that a later revision can be identified and changed without guessing what a number meant.

Can I open or disassemble the controller to measure hidden features?

Do not infer hidden geometry from an exterior measurement, but do not treat teardown as part of this basic workflow either. Remove only user-serviceable covers when the product documentation permits it; whether further disassembly is appropriate depends on the specific controller.

The cited Rock Band guide shows a neck attached to the body, a separate battery panel, and movable strap hardware, and cautions users not to modify, disassemble, or open the controller (guide). For that controller, preserve access to the neck joint and battery panel and do not open the unit to obtain hidden measurements. Apply the same caution to other models by checking their own documentation rather than assuming the same rules apply.

How do I turn the measurements into a CAD model?

First model enough of the controller to describe the accessory’s fit: its outer envelope, mounting faces, holes, controls, and keep-out areas. Then design the accessory around that reference geometry, subtracting measured openings where the controller, a control, a fastener, or a service area must pass through or remain clear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Create the reference model. Use the datum measurements to represent the outer envelope and the features that matter to the accessory. Include control positions and keep-out volumes for parts that move or need access.
  2. Add the accessory geometry. Build its intended wall thickness, contact faces, and fastening features around the reference model. Use the measured contact surfaces rather than the overall outline alone.
  3. Make openings subtractive. In Adafruit’s Tinkercad workflow, measured values are entered using the Ruler tool; cutting solids are changed to Hole, grouped to subtract them, and the result is exported for printing (enclosure workflow). The same underlying idea applies in other CAD tools: model the material to remove as subtractive geometry.
  4. Keep measurements editable. Maintain a parameter table for measured values so that a later controller revision can be accommodated by updating dimensions rather than remodeling the entire part.
  5. Use lead-ins selectively. A small lead-in or chamfer may help where the accessory meets the controller, but do not add one where it would reduce retention or expose a control.

There is no universal clearance value established for guitar-controller accessories in the cited material. Treat clearance as a design parameter to tune with a test print. A nominal CAD opening alone cannot establish that a printed part will fit the particular controller and printer combination.

How should I choose an attachment approach?

Choose an attachment method by balancing fit, reversibility, service access, and the job the accessory needs to do. There is no universally best method; compare the options against the controller’s actual contact surfaces and the areas that must remain usable.

Approach What to check Main trade-off
Clip-on Shell thickness at every clip, the path needed to install it, and whether the clip clears buttons and moving controls. Can avoid permanent changes, but the measured fit and retention geometry are critical.
Screw-mounted Whether suitable holes or mounting points exist, their diameters and depths, and room for the fasteners. Offers a defined fastening interface; confirm that installation is appropriate for the specific controller.
Adhesive Contact area and whether the chosen placement covers a service panel, connector, or control. May be difficult to remove cleanly; avoid assuming the controller surface is suitable without checking.
Strap-mounted Strap-hardware position, available clearance, and whether the accessory interferes with strap movement. Uses the strap area as an interface, so it must preserve the hardware’s operation.

For each approach, ask whether the battery, connectors, neck joint, and controls remain accessible; whether the interface is a precisely measured cavity or can be adjusted or shimmed; and whether the part can be removed without modifying the controller. A removable neck and mechanical fret or strum controls appear in ClickForge’s custom-controller description (product description); Phantom Limb Designs describes controllers with detachable headstocks and screw-and-hex-wrench assembly (product description). Those are examples of custom hardware approaches, not dimension references for a different controller.

How do I validate the fit before printing the full accessory?

Print a small test coupon that includes the most restrictive opening, one mounting feature, and the adjacent wall. Test it on an unpowered controller first, then confirm the assembled accessory leaves controls and service areas usable before committing to a full print.

  1. Choose the critical interface. Include the tightest opening or contact, a representative fastener or mounting feature, and enough adjacent wall to assess how the part seats.
  2. Fit it while the controller is unpowered. Check that the coupon seats fully and does not force the controller or its controls out of position.
  3. Check clearances. Confirm that it does not press buttons, restrict the strum or whammy controls, or cover connectors, battery access, or strap hardware.
  4. Test full movement. Once the accessory is assembled, move the relevant controls through their full range and check for interference.
  5. Adjust and repeat as needed. Use the observed fit to tune the CAD clearance rather than assuming a universal tolerance. Keep the measurements and print settings for each iteration.

A coupon tests the features most likely to determine fit without requiring a full-size print for every adjustment. It does not replace checking the finished part’s complete control range and service access.

Which print settings should I record?

Record the settings used for each prototype so you can relate a fit result to the print that produced it. At minimum, document the printer, nozzle, layer height, material, infill, perimeters, orientation, and support settings.

Published examples are not universal prescriptions. Adafruit documents PLA and a minimum printer build area of 250 × 148 × approximately 50 mm for its four-piece enclosure (printing information). A separate published controller build reports PLA, 15% infill, two perimeters, and a 0.2 mm layer height (build listing). Those settings describe different projects; they do not guarantee a fit or adequate strength for every accessory, printer, or load.

What common measurement mistakes cause a bad fit?

Most avoidable fit problems come from measuring the wrong controller, using inconsistent references, or designing around the controller’s outline while overlooking interfaces and moving parts. Use this check before exporting a final model.

  • Copying dimensions from another device: confirm the model and revision, then measure the actual unit.
  • Using an undefined origin: write down the datum face, origin, and X/Y/Z directions before recording hole coordinates.
  • Measuring only the outside: include contact surfaces, openings, recesses, fasteners, service panels, and moving-control clearance.
  • Trusting a single reading: take at least two readings of each critical feature and re-zero the caliper when values disagree.
  • Recording a false recess depth: note whether the caliper jaw reached the feature’s true bottom.
  • Assuming an external dimension reveals the inside: do not invent hidden geometry; only remove covers when documentation permits it.
  • Assuming CAD fit equals printed fit: test a coupon and tune clearance from the actual result.
  • Forgetting service and control access: check connectors, battery access, strap hardware, and the complete travel of controls before finalizing the accessory.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a digital caliper to measure a guitar controller?

A caliper is specifically recommended for measuring small features such as button diameters, and the workflow depends on accurate readings of critical interfaces. A ruler can help establish an overall envelope, but it is not a substitute for measuring small openings, holes, and control features precisely.

Should I measure the controller in inches or millimetres?

Use millimetres for the worksheet and CAD model, as in the measurement workflow here. If a manual gives inches, convert the source value carefully and keep the source units in your notes so you can distinguish a published figure from a measurement you took.

Can I reuse my accessory measurements for a second controller?

Only if you verify that the second unit has the same model and revision and confirm the critical interfaces on that unit. A shared product family or similar appearance is not enough to establish that openings, controls, or mounting points line up.
